The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Li Cuixia rushed to Yang Dachou’s house.

As soon as she entered, she heard crying, and Li Cuixia recognized that it was her elder sister-in-law Wang Shushu’s voice.

”What’s wrong with mom?”

Li Cuixia asked as she stepped inside.

Wang Shushu pointed inside the room: ”She fainted, your eldest brother went to find the doctor.”

Yangjiazhuang is a big village, and although there is a doctor in the village, he can only treat colds and fevers with some medicine and injections. Any more serious illnesses are beyond him.

When Li Cuixia heard Wang Shushu say they were looking for a doctor, she knew they were going to find Dr. Geng from the village, and she immediately said, ”Mom is unconscious, why aren’t you taking her to the hospital immediately? What are you doing?”

She looked around: ”Where’s Dad?”

Wang Shushu’s face turned a bit unpleasant: ”Dad, he...”

Li Cuixia’s anger surged: ”Where has Dad gone? With Mom in this state, where did he go?”

Wang Shushu pointed outside: ”He went to Widow Liu’s house.”

This Widow Liu was a few years younger than Yang Lao Mao, not particularly good-looking but had a good figure. In her younger days, she was famously flirtatious. After her husband died, she raised two sons and a daughter by herself, living a tough life.

The villagers gossiped about Widow Liu, saying that she was improper, often attracting men to work for her or that she had good relations with several men who often gave her money.

Li Cuixia hadn’t heard of anything between Yang Lao Mao and Widow Liu before. Hearing that Yang Lao Mao went to Widow Liu’s house, she quickly said, ”Then hurry and call him back...”

Wang Shushu’s face grew uglier: ”Call him? Mom fainted from anger because of this. Today, Dad went out saying he was going for a walk, Mom didn’t think much of it. Later, she heard that there was some issue in Fugui’s partner’s family, and since Widow Liu’s family is also in the town, she went to find Widow Liu for information, only to see Dad and Widow Liu hugging...”

Wang Shushu didn’t finish her sentence, but Li Cuixia understood.

Understanding, her face also turned ugly: ”Does Dad know Mom fainted?”

Wang Shushu nodded: ”He knows. Mom fought with Widow Liu, Dad sided with Widow Liu, even saying Mom was petty, making trouble out of nothing. Unable to beat the two shameless ones, Mom came back, and soon after, she fainted.”

”Go to the county hospital.”

Li Cuixia glanced at Ge San Ni, her eyes tightly shut, her face pale, and felt a shock: ”I think Mom’s condition isn’t promising, we should go to the hospital.”

Wang Shushu was also somewhat at a loss: ”Let’s wait for your eldest brother to come...”

”Wait for what?”

Yang Erchou hurried in, saw Ge San Ni like that, and got anxious: ”Elder sister-in-law, quickly find a vehicle, let’s take Mom to the commune hospital first.”

The county hospital was a bit far, and Yang Erchou worried about delays, so he thought of going to the commune hospital first.

Wang Shushu was also terribly scared and quickly ran outside to find a vehicle.

Soon, she managed to get a cart, and Li Cuixia and Wang Shushu lifted Ge San Ni onto it, with Yang Erchou pulling the cart towards the commune hospital.

Li Cuixia quickly followed.

Wang Shushu wanted to go with them, but after thinking for a moment, she told Li Cuixia, ”I’ll stay home waiting for your eldest brother, otherwise he won’t know they’ve gone to the hospital.”

”Okay, wait for the eldest brother, and when he gets back, go quickly.”

Li Cuixia gave instructions and hurried to help Yang Erchou push the cart.

Not long after they left, Yang Dachou arrived with the doctor.

Seeing Yang Dachou, Wang Shushu quickly went over: ”Dr. Geng, sorry for making you come all this way for nothing, I apologize, my younger brother was afraid it would be too late for my mom, so he took her to the commune hospital.”

Dr. Geng had a good relationship with the Yang family and upon hearing this, he waved his hand with a smile: ”No problem, as long as the elderly are fine, I’ll be on my way.”

After sending Dr. Geng off, Yang Dachou anxiously asked Wang Shushu: ”Why didn’t you go to the hospital?”

Wang Shushu smirked: ”If I went, who would pay for the hospital stay or tests? Let me tell you, our family doesn’t have much money left, so let’s wait a bit, when the time is right, we’ll go. By then, the younger brother will have paid the admission fees, and we’ll save quite a bit.”

Yang Dachou thought it made sense.

He suddenly sat down and asked Wang Shushu to quickly pour him a drink.

Wang Shushu just poured water when Yang Lao Mao sauntered back.

When Yang Dachou saw Yang Lao Mao, he didn’t greet him warmly: ”Dad, did you come to see if Mom was dead?”

Yang Lao Mao looked quite embarrassed: ”What are you talking about? I didn’t come back sooner because I was afraid I’d irritate your mom again. Let me explain—I really have nothing going on with Aunt Liu, you guys shouldn’t guess wildly.”

Wang Shushu smirked inwardly, thinking they were hugging and nothing’s going on?

She handed the bowl to Yang Dachou and then remembered something: ”Right, should we inform Junni and the others?”

Yang Dachou nodded: ”Let’s first go to the hospital, then see how Mom is before telling Junni and the rest.”

He drank some water and sat for a while before asking Wang Shushu to go to the hospital with him.

Before leaving, Yang Dachou said to Yang Lao Mao: ”Dad, if my sister comes back and hears about this, Widow Liu won’t have a good time.”

Yang Lao Mao got agitated upon hearing this: ”What are you saying? Nothing noteworthy, really—I just went to inquire about something, and Aunt Liu stumbled. You know when elderly folks take a tumble, they can’t get up easily. I was just helping her up.”

Then Yang Lao Mao further explained: ”Mom keeps such tight control over money, and I don’t have any cash, what could Aunt Liu possibly want with me? She’d look for someone with money.”

This sounded plausible.

Yang Dachou thought for a while, thinking perhaps Ge San Ni misunderstood.

But Wang Shushu raised another question: ”Dad, what were you finding out?”

Upon her asking, Yang Lao Mao remembered a serious matter: ”I went to the market in town today, heard Fugui’s partner found another guy, I don’t know if it’s true or not, came back wanting Widow Liu to check it out for me.”

Yang Dachou got anxious upon hearing this: ”What? Miao Miao found another one? This doesn’t seem right, they were asking for dowry just a few days ago...”

Wang Shushu pulled Yang Dachou: ”First, let’s go see Mom, then go to the town to check it out later.”

Anning saw the ribs were almost cooked through, added potatoes to the pot, and after waiting for more than ten minutes for the potatoes to soften, she took out the dish.

She went inside to get an insulated box, picked some dishes to put inside, then served herself a bowl to eat.

After finishing her meal, Anning grabbed the insulated box and headed out.

Yang Erchou and Li Cuixia had not returned for a long time, so she figured Ge San Ni’s illness must be serious, and they were likely at the hospital.

Anning took the insulated box to inquire around and sure enough, Ge San Ni had been taken to the commune hospital.

Thinking it over, she returned home and pushed out her bicycle, riding it with the insulated box to bring food to Yang Erchou and Li Cuixia.

Upon reaching the town, Anning bought two pancakes and headed to the hospital.

When she arrived, Yang Erchou had already admitted Ge San Ni to the hospital, and she had woken up, but still looked unwell.

Yang Erchou was out asking the doctor about the situation, while Li Cuixia stayed by Ge San Ni, administering the IV.

Anning entered and handed the insulated box and pancakes to Li Cuixia: ”Mom, you eat first, I’ll watch over Grandma.”

Li Cuixia took the insulated box, picked out a little dish, took chopsticks, intending to feed Ge San Ni, but Anning stopped her.

”Mom, Grandma can’t eat these. I just saw the medication list next to the IV, they’re all blood-thinning medicines. Grandma’s condition might be related to stress-induced stroke, she can’t have greasy food now.”

Li Cuixia, terrified, didn’t dare feed Ge San Ni the meat: ”Then what can Grandma eat?”

Anning looked at the IV: ”Once this infusion finishes, we should get Grandma some more bland food. Later, I’ll go outside to find a small restaurant to see if we can get some rice porridge or noodle soup, and a small bland stir-fry.”

”Alright then.”

Li Cuixia bit into the rib, it was cooked perfectly, the meat soft, laden with fragrance, spreading the aroma throughout the ward when bitten.

Ge San Ni, catching the whiff, craved it so much she almost drooled.

She really wanted to eat.

Staying at Yang Dachou’s house, Yang Dachou was poor, and family life was barely manageable, the food really couldn’t be considered good. Ge San Ni seldom got to eat meat and was craving it terribly. Now, with ready-to-eat meat right in front of her but she couldn’t eat, it was agonizing for her.
