The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

An Yuan served as Luo Anqing’s brother from her maternal family to escort her for her wedding.

Anning and Xiao Yuan went because she and Anqing are siblings by birth. Mrs. Luo was unable to go, and if Anning, as Anqing’s sister, did not go, the family would not feel at ease.

From Yang City to the Capital, the journey is not close at all, so Anning had to begin preparations days in advance.

Traveling in ancient times was quite troublesome, as one needed to bring plenty of necessities, food, and supplies. Otherwise, if you find yourself in a remote area with no village ahead or shop behind, you’ll be in a real predicament.

Luckily, Anning had experience and prepared very thoroughly.

When Anning was ready, the group from the Cong Family in the Capital also arrived for the wedding procession.

Cong Zhongbai invited a clan brother of his to lead the group. His clan brother reached Yang City, stayed only for one night, and started the journey the next day.

Then the two families joined together for the journey to the Capital.

This journey included a large number of people, and besides them, there was Anqing’s dowry, making for quite a long procession.

At first, the road was fairly smooth, so it was tolerable.

But after leaving Yang City and traveling a distance, the official road became bumpy, giving Luo Anqing quite an ordeal.

As they gradually traveled north, the weather turned a bit cooler, and in the mornings and evenings, everyone started wearing thicker clothes.

Anning, worried that Anqing might have issues, mostly stayed in Anqing’s carriage during the day to keep her company by talking.

Later, Anqing felt it was a bit inconsiderate to keep Anning and Xiao Yuan separated as a couple, so she assured Anning that she was fine and there was no need to accompany her every day.

Seeing Anqing had maids and older women to attend to her, Anning felt at ease and stopped coming every day.

Traveling north, after passing several towns, the road became easier to travel, and Luo Anqing was in the spirit to chat and laugh with her maids.

On this day, the entourage reached a lively town, and it was just the right time to replenish their supplies of food and necessities. An Yuan discussed with Xiao Yuan and that clan brother from the Cong Family about resting in the town for two days to let everyone relax and concurrently purchase items needed for the journey.

After agreeing, An Yuan arranged for the group to stay in the backyard of an inn and, once they settled in, Anning and Xiao Yuan went out to stroll the streets after freshening up.

Instead of eating at the inn, they informed An Yuan and went out to find a local restaurant to enjoy two of the region’s specialty dishes, indulging in a hearty meal. After dining, Anning and Xiao Yuan strolled the street, occasionally buying unique little trinkets.

After wandering for about an hour, they ran into someone they knew.

This acquaintance was someone Anning especially did not want to meet.

Hearing that familiar ”Brother Xiao” call, Anning was overcome with a headache.

Xiao Yuan felt the same.

They originally did not want to respond, but they did not expect Mao Xiaoxiao to chase after them.

”Brother Xiao.”

Mao Xiaoxiao ran up with a smile, standing in front of Xiao Yuan, looking adorably small and charming: ”I never expected to meet you here. What brings you here, are you sightseeing?”

Before Xiao Yuan could answer, an angry voice came.

”Xiaoxiao, who is he?”

Xiao Yuan and Anning looked in the voice’s direction and saw a young gentleman in splendid attire running up from behind Mao Xiaoxiao.

Anning only needed a glance to know the identity of this splendidly dressed young gentleman.

Xiao Yuan looked at Anning and, as the gentleman approached, he spoke before Mao Xiaoxiao could make introductions: ”Miss Mao, my wife and I have matters to attend to, so I won’t catch up with you.”

The gentleman was relieved once he heard Xiao Yuan mention a wife and upon taking in Anning’s dignified appearance.

He cupped his hands towards Xiao Yuan: ”Since you are a friend of Xiaoxiao, perhaps...”

Anning laughed: ”She’s not exactly a friend. My husband’s sect and the Maoshan Sect have some longstanding disputes, calling them enemies wouldn’t be far-fetched. I’m not sure why, but maybe Miss Mao has a screw loose and keeps calling my husband ”brother.” Despite the number of times we’ve tried to correct her, she refuses to stop. Alas, it’s truly a pity for someone so young to be deaf and foolish.”

Having said this, Anning smiled at the gentleman: ”Sir, are you a friend of Miss Mao? In that case, please take good care of Miss Mao, she’s...”

Anning tapped her own head: ”Not quite like others, mishandle her, and trouble’s bound to arise.”

Though Anning’s beauty and composure were captivating, her words about Mao Xiaoxiao still irked the young gentleman.

”Madam, Miss Mao is genuine and pure-hearted, not...”

”Oh.”

Anning nodded: ”I must have been mistaken then, well, her matters are not my concern.”

She took Xiao Yuan’s hand: ”Miss Mao, my husband and I have business to attend to, excuse us.”

”You...”

Mao Xiaoxiao puffed with anger, glaring at Anning: ”Just now you were...”

But by then, Anning and Xiao Yuan had already walked away.

The splendidly dressed young gentleman turned to Mao Xiaoxiao: ”Xiaoxiao, who was that?”

Mao Xiaoxiao pouted, fuming for a while: ”He’s the Sect Master of the East God Sect.”

The gentleman was taken aback and then took Mao Xiaoxiao’s hand: ”Alright, don’t be upset. I’ll take you for some delicious treats. Oh, by the way, my men overheard something just now...”

Anning and Xiao Yuan made their way back to the inn and along the way also picked up on a rather intriguing story.

There was an Old Master Wu in this town who, past thirty, only had one daughter. Until now, she remained his only child and was treasured like a jewel.

The Wu Family was massive, their estate vast, and Old Master Wu cherished Miss Wu deeply. He intended to keep her longer before marriage, but as time passed, Miss Wu grew older. Both she and Old Master Wu were very selective, searching for a suitable son-in-law without success.

With no other choice, Old Master Wu decided to let Miss Wu throw an embroidered ball to choose a suitor.

Tomorrow, Miss Wu would throw the embroidery ball from a Wu Family restaurant. Any unmarried man under the age of twenty-five could try to catch it, and whoever succeeded would marry Miss Wu.

Anning and Xiao Yuan walked on, overhearing townsfolk buzzing about it. Many young men were planning to make a scene tomorrow, hoping to catch the lucky break of catching the embroidery ball, which would be like hitting the jackpot — all of Wu Family’s vast wealth would become his.

Some even said they had several brothers at home, none of whom had married yet. As long as one of them caught Miss Wu’s embroidery ball, the family would gain a large fortune, and then no one would have to worry about finding a bride.

Anning and Xiao Yuan returned to the inn, and Anning went to chat idly with Anqing, sharing some amusing street stories with her.

Anning also smiled as she recounted the tale of Miss Wu.

Anqing listened, then sat dazed for a while before responding: ”How can such antics lead to a worthy husband? It’s utter nonsense.”

Anning also found it absurd.

But, since this is a world of Demon Hunting stories, and it is set within a book, some unreasonable scenarios are inevitable.
