The headteacher’s words left many boys unconvinced.

Some troublemakers immediately protested: ”Teacher, you’re being too much. How can you compare us to Class 12? Do you think we could possibly score lower than those slackers in Class 12?”

The headteacher was almost amused by his anger, smacking the desk with a book: ”I’m being too much? You’re the ones being too much. Getting more and more relaxed by the day, do I need to wind you up tight? And saying you can’t compare with Class 12, what about Class 12? Those slackers have made obvious progress this exam, but what about you...”

He slapped the test papers again: ”In this midterm exam, the top scorer of the grade is a student from Class 12, scoring 858 points, 858! That’s practically a perfect score in every subject. Had it not been for the nitpicking and deduction of two points on the essay, they would have had a real perfect score. But you all...”

The headteacher then turned to Zhao Mingzhu: ”Zhao Mingzhu, your Chinese score in this exam didn’t even reach 100 points. What happened?”

Zhao Mingzhu hung her head even lower: ”I’ll try harder.”

”Trying hard isn’t just something you say; you’ve got to put it into action. Anyway, let’s see your performance next time.”

This class, the headteacher was furious, scolding several students while going through the exam papers.

It was with great relief that they made it to the end of class, and once the headteacher left, the students in Class 1 gathered and buzzed with incessant discussion.

”Is it for real, Class 12 has someone who ranked first?”

”Who is this prodigy? Full marks in every subject?”

”Let’s go check the honor roll.”

”I don’t remember anyone from Class 12 being particularly good at studying.”

”Has Class 12 really made overall progress, or is it just a fluke?”

The students of Class 1 crowded towards the school’s performance board to check the honor roll.

When they saw Zhao Anning’s name written in big bold letters at the top of the honor roll, they rubbed their eyes again and again, verifying that they weren’t seeing things wrong, and that it wasn’t an illusion. Once sure, they really felt a burning pain on their faces.

Zhao Anning, with her scores, had resoundingly slapped the students of Class 1 in the face.

In the office, Class 1’s headteacher was still quite angry.

He felt so stifled and didn’t know how to vent his frustration.

Meanwhile, Class 12’s headteacher, Teacher Wu, was brimming with pride.

Now walking on air, even her small stature seemed to carry an aura of great presence, exacerbating the frustration of Class 1’s headteacher.

Several teachers were congratulating Teacher Wu.

Teacher Wu was grinning from ear to ear: ”The kids are motivated; I didn’t think they’d improve so fast.”

”Speaking of Zhao Anning, I didn’t see it coming either. Zhao Anning’s studies are great. Originally the principal wanted her to move to Class 1, but she didn’t want to be around Zhao Mingzhu, so she stubbornly refused to go. And look, I’ve reaped the benefits.”

”You’re being too modest, but if Zhao Anning continues like this, snagging the top scorer in the middle school exams is well within reach.”

Teacher Wu was in such a good mood; she spoke to her students with a spring-like warmth when she returned to the classroom.

This was a stark contrast to Class 1.

And the students of Class 1, after seeing the honor roll, looked at Zhao Mingzhu differently.

Just a while ago, Zhao Mingzhu was still whining about how Zhao Anning was not good at studying and that’s why she got placed into Class 12. She even mentioned Zhao Anning and Xiao Yuan from Class 12 being together, expressing her worries.

But now, with the results out, all those concerns were bullshit.

Her concerns were nonsense; she didn’t even have a proper understanding and was spewing nonsense, no wonder Ming Rui was so annoyed that he came to the classroom personally to clarify.

You, being the mistakenly adopted daughter, should be more low-key now that the biological daughter has returned. Stop being so crafty.

But Zhao Mingzhu clearly has too many schemes.

Many girls, thinking about Zhao Mingzhu’s usual display of good character, warned themselves internally.

Zhao Mingzhu noticed that after the students saw the honor roll, the way they looked at her felt a bit odd.

She couldn’t understand and gathered her spirits to ask the chubby kid, ”What’s going on with them?”

The chubby kid hesitated and finally clenched his teeth, ”This time in the examinations, Zhao Anning scored first in the grade.”

Buzzing in her head, Zhao Mingzhu felt her mind in utter chaos.

Zhao Anning scored first in the grade?

Nearly perfect scores in all subjects?

How is that possible?

Her studies were not good at all when she was with the Liu Family, so how could she have improved so quickly after moving to the Capital?

In an instant, Zhao Mingzhu thought of cheating.

”Really?”

She asked the chubby kid with red eyes, ”Did Anning really get first place? But mom said her studies were poor, she even talked to me specially about this when she brought Anning back home, telling me not to bring up the topic of studies to avoid making Anning feel bad. How could she possibly score first?”

The chubby kid slapped his forehead, ”Are you saying she cheated?”

Zhao Mingzhu quickly denied, ”That’s not what I mean, I just find it strange.”

Many students in the class followed Zhao Mingzhu’s train of thought and began to wonder, how could someone who was always poor in their studies suddenly become the top scorer?

Even if one were to improve, it would be gradual, right? No one can make such a huge leap suddenly, can they?

Could it be cheating?

Several of the more rational classmates quickly spoke up loudly, ”It’s impossible to cheat, who can score full marks in all subjects through cheating? Also, do you think the invigilators are fools? Zhao Anning just transferred to our school, she doesn’t know anyone, how could she cheat?”

”Yeah, don’t even say people from Class 12 helped her. If those guys in Class 12 could cheat, they would have done it already, why would they need to help Zhao Anning?”

Indeed, that’s the case.

The students who initially thought Zhao Anning had cheated also came back to their senses.

Exactly.

Who could cheat their way to a perfect score in all subjects?

And besides, Zhao Anning is the top scorer, whose answers could she have copied?

Keep in mind, Zhao Anning was taking the exam in Class 12’s room, where the students who were assigned to take the test were those with poor grades in the class, whose answers could she possibly copy?

Zhao Mingzhu knew she wasn’t leading everyone astray and was so angry she bit her teeth.

At this time, Anning had already returned to the Zhao home.

She leaned against Song Ruyi, with Aunt Zhang bringing over some fruit.

Anning took a bite of the apple, ”Mom, I feel like I’m not that scared of Zhao Mingzhu anymore.”

There was laughter in her eyes and brows, ”Really, yesterday when I confronted her in front of so many people in the classroom, I found out that she’s not that scary. She isn’t a tiger and can’t eat me. I had drawn a circle around myself in the past and trapped myself within it, but now I can jump out.”

”Really?”

Song Ruyi was overjoyed upon hearing that, ”You’re really not that scared of her?”

”Yep!” Anning nodded vigorously, ”Mom, but I still don’t want you guys to bring her back. Although I’m not scared of her, I don’t want to see her.”

Song Ruyi was just so delighted she wasn’t even thinking about bringing Zhao Mingzhu back anymore.

Furthermore, Xiao Yuan’s words yesterday had deeply affected her.

She could no longer treat Zhao Mingzhu with an untroubled heart.

”Okay, we won’t bring her back. We won’t.”
