She started to pull her foot back. But before she could retreat, her foot was gently captured in his strong, warm hands.

”Forget it,” he said smoothly. ”You’re already here. Let me help.”

Charlize looked at his hands around her ankle. ”You really are different, you know that? Most men would have taken advantage of the situation by now.”

Marvin glanced up at her. ”And you sound disappointed.”

She smiled despite herself. ”Maybe I am.”

There was enough honesty in the answer to make the space between them feel smaller.

Marvin reached toward the center console of the Rolls-Royce. With a soft click, he opened the polished burr walnut veneer paneling, revealing a small, built-in refrigerated compartment. He extracted a frosted glass bottle of pure medicinal alcohol and a chilled white towel.

”You carry all this around?” she asked, stunned into a quiet laugh.

”I have a driver.”

”That doesn’t answer the question.”

”No.”

The boy moved with the fluid, practiced grace of a seasoned physician, yet his presence felt entirely different. There was something intimate about the silence in the car, especially after the chaos inside. For the first time that evening, she didn’t feel as though she had to perform for anyone. No Harvey. No Ben. No agents. No executives. Just Marvin beside her, calmly tending to her as the city slipped past the darkened windows.

”You scared me tonight,” she said quietly.

His hands paused. ”Ben?”

She nodded. ”I’ve dealt with men like him before. Usually you learn to smile, say no politely, and get away before they decide you meant something else. Tonight was different.” Her mouth tightened. ”You came after me without even knowing me.”

”I knew enough.”

”That I was worth helping?”

Marvin’s gaze met hers. ”That you didn’t want him.”

The answer caught her off guard. Charlize looked away, staring through the window at the passing lights. ”That’s a very simple way of looking at it.”

”Most things are.”

She gave a faint laugh. ”You’re dangerous.”

”I’ve heard that before.”

”And you’re arrogant.”

”Probably.”

”And you don’t seem particularly interested in pretending otherwise.” She reached down and rested her fingers lightly against his wrist. ”You know what I like about you? You don’t look at me like I’m something you can buy. Everyone else does it differently. Some men look at you and see a body. Some see a career opportunity. Some see a woman they can put in their bed with the right producer and call it business.” Her voice hardened slightly. ”You looked at me and asked if I was hurt.”

”That’s because you were,” he replied.

He poured a small amount of the freezing liquid onto his palms. He rubbed his hands together—and in that subtle motion, activated his dormant mana—before firmly wrapping his long fingers around her swollen ankle.

Charlize tensed. ”Cold.”

”You’ll survive,” he murmured, his thumbs beginning to work around the swelling.

”Easy,” she breathed out.

”I am being easy.”

”You’re not—”

A moment later, a shocking, uncontrollable sound broke the silence of the luxury car. It started as a startled gasp, almost a genuine cry of pain, but it rapidly melted into a louder, playfully undeniable moan of bliss.

The magic didn’t just numb the human pain receptors; it converted the agonizing, inflamed nerve endings directly into pathways of intense, blinding euphoria. As Marvin’s thumbs pressed deeply into the swollen tendons, pushing the chilled alcohol into her skin, waves of electric, shuddering pleasure shot up her leg and straight into her spine.

She left her foot resting beside him, staring at his face through a sudden, breathless haze. ”You really meant what you said in there, didn’t you? That no one gets to decide what I owe them.”

Marvin’s expression changed only slightly. ”Yes.”

She nodded, a warm, ragged smile crossing her lips. ”I’m glad I came back.”

Then, the sounds escaped her control entirely, occasionally interrupted by sweet, euphoric giggles as she writhed against the leather seats.

”Ah! Don’t—don’t scratch there, Marvin, it’s so itchy.”

”Ah... what exactly are you doing? It burns, but it feels so... oh my god.”

”No, no, no—not there! Please... not there! I can’t...”

”...”

In the driver’s seat, Gordon’s eyes widened a fraction when the noise from the back became completely impossible to ignore.

He swallowed hard and kept his eyes firmly on the road.

Whatever was happening behind him was none of his business. He’d been doing this long enough to know that some things were better left unseen, especially when his employer was involved.

Without a word, Gordon reached for the small silver button built into the dashboard.

A quiet motor hummed.

The thick partition between the seats rose from its housing until it sealed off the cabin, leaving Gordon alone with the road and Marvin with whatever was happening in the back.

Gordon tightened his hands around the steering wheel.

’Just drive.’ He fixed his attention on the taillights ahead. ’I don’t need to know.’

For a while, neither of them spoke.

The partition had done its job. The city had become nothing more than a muted procession of lights beyond the dark glass, and the noise from the street had disappeared completely.

Marvin’s hand remained around her ankle.

His touch was gentle, his thumbs pressing carefully along the injured tendon. But then, a strange warmth began to spread beneath his fingers. The bruised tissue seemed to loosen almost imperceptibly, the sharpness draining from the injury as an unnatural heat—something that felt entirely like euphoria—worked its way through the damaged muscles.

Her breath caught. ”Ah—”

The sound escaped before she could stop it.

Marvin immediately eased the pressure. ”Too much?”

”No.” She swallowed, her fingers tightening around the edge of the leather seat. ”Just surprised.”

He studied her ankle. ”Tell me if it hurts.”

”It does.” She gave him a crooked, slightly breathless smile. ”But not in the way you’re thinking.”

His hands moved again, slower this time. The effect intensified. The pain was still there, but it was being swallowed by a rushing, electric warmth. Every pulse seemed to travel through the damaged tissue and leave it intensely, almost overwhelmingly calm.

Charlize’s eyes fluttered shut. Her head fell back against the seat. A low groan escaped her, followed quickly by a breathless laugh that sounded genuinely embarrassed.

”This is ridiculous,” she whispered.

”What?”

”I don’t know what you’re doing.”

”Fixing your ankle.”

”No.” She shook her head, opening her eyes to look at him. ”Whatever you’re doing is not normal.”

Marvin’s mouth curved slightly. ”You noticed.”

”I noticed.” She let out a long breath, the tension leaving her shoulders completely. ”You know, this is probably the strangest ride home I’ve ever had.”

Marvin glanced up. ”You’ve had strange rides.”

”More than you’d think.”

”I believe you.”

A faint smile touched her mouth. Her dress had ridden higher than she had intended when she stretched her leg across the space between them, but she didn’t bother to move it. Instead, she just watched him.

”I started dancing when I was very young,” she said, her voice dropping into a quiet, conversational rhythm. ”Ballet, mostly. I thought that was going to be my life for a while.”

”You were good?”

”I was stubborn.”

”That’s not what I asked.”

”It was necessary.”

Marvin smiled, and she found herself smiling back.

”I came to America in the early nineties thinking I’d become a dancer,” she continued, looking toward the window. ”I was twenty-something, didn’t know anybody, didn’t have much money, and had no idea whether any of this was going to work. When dancing didn’t happen, I modeled. And then, acting.”

”And you decided acting was easier?”

She gave him an incredulous look. ”Acting is easier?”

”Compared to dancing.”

”You’re funny.”

”I wasn’t joking.”

She laughed under her breath. It was a soft, genuine sound. There was no audience for this one.

”I spent years trying to convince people I could do more than stand in front of a camera,” she said. ”When I got *The Devil’s Advocate*, suddenly everyone decided I was an actress.”

”You were already one.”

”Not to them.”

”They were late.”

She stared at him for a moment. ”That’s a very irritating thing about you.”

”What?”

”You say things like that as though they’re obvious.”

”Sometimes they are.”

Her expression softened. She settled deeper into the seat, the ambient light of Los Angeles washing over her face in slow intervals. Somewhere out there were producers, agents, and photographers who had spent the entire evening deciding what she was worth. Here, none of them mattered.

”There were nights when I wondered if I’d made a terrible mistake about all this.”

Marvin’s fingers continued their slow movement around her ankle.

She looked down at him. ”I never told my mother that.”

”Why?”

”Because she already worried enough.” A pause. ”And my friends? They thought I was doing wonderfully.”

”You weren’t?”

”I was surviving.”

Marvin nodded once. Charlize studied his face. ”You don’t try to make everything sound better.”

”No.”

”I like that.” She settled deeper into the seat. ”When I got my first real opportunity, I thought everything would change. I thought I’d finally stop worrying about money. Stop worrying about whether someone would call me back.”

She laughed quietly.

”Then I discovered Hollywood has an almost endless supply of ways to make you feel like you’re not good enough.”

”I’ve noticed.”

She turned toward him. ”You have?”

”I’ve met Hollywood.”

That drew another laugh from her.

She shook her head. ”You’re strange.”

”I’ve heard that too.”

”I suppose everyone tells you everything.”

”Not everyone.”

”Would you remember if I did?”

”Yes.”

She stared at him.

There was something about the answer that made her expression change. ”That’s dangerous.”

”Why?”

”Because I might actually believe you.”

”You can.”

Her gaze lingered on him.

”I had a relationship once that almost broke me.”

Marvin didn’t interrupt.

Charlize’s voice became quieter. ”I’ve never told anyone how bad it got.” She paused. ”Not even my mother.”

His hands slowed. ”You don’t have to tell me.”

”I know,” she said, meeting his eyes. ”That’s why I’m telling you.”

As the Rolls-Royce hummed through the sleeping city, she told him about the loneliness that came with being recognized without actually being known. About sitting alone in hotel rooms, staring at a telephone that didn’t ring, and pretending rejection didn’t hurt.

Marvin rarely interrupted. When he did, it was only a few grounding words.

You shouldn’t have had to deal with that. You were younger then. I understand.

Those quiet validations made it easier. She told him about the pressure to be grateful for toxic attention, and how she sometimes hated herself for being angry about it.

”Because other people would have killed for the opportunities I had,” she whispered.

”That doesn’t mean you have to accept everything that comes with them,” Marvin replied.

”That’s what you said before.”

”Because it’s still true.”

Her smile was small, a little fragile. ”You make things sound so simple.”

”They don’t have to be complicated.”

”No. They mostly are.” She paused, her eyes tracing the clean lines of his profile. ”But maybe they shouldn’t be. When everything went wrong tonight, you didn’t ask what I could do for you. You didn’t ask who I knew. You didn’t look at me like I was an opportunity. You just helped me.”

”You needed help.”

”I know.” She reached out, letting her fingers drift toward his wrist, resting them there lightly. ”I think I might actually like being around someone who doesn’t need anything from me.”

His expression softened. ”I need something.”

Her eyes lifted. ”What?”

”Stay still. You keep moving your ankle.”

She laughed, a bright, clear sound that filled the back of the car. ”That’s not very romantic.”

”I noticed.”

Her ankle felt entirely normal now. The bruising was gone, replaced by a lingering, soothing warmth. Sensing the work was done, Marvin loosened his grip.

Charlize felt a strange pang of disappointment. She withdrew her hand from his wrist, only to turn it over and place it directly over his. Neither of them moved.

”I don’t want tonight to end,” she whispered.

”It doesn’t have to.”

”That’s not what I meant.”

”I know.”

The answer made her smile. She shifted closer. There was much room between them, but she found herself wanting to get close, letting her shoulder touch his. A few seconds later, she rested her head against him. Marvin didn’t pull away.

For the rest of the drive, they talked. Not because they had to, but because they wanted to. She told him about the songs she listened to when she couldn’t sleep, the food she missed from home, the ridiculous things she was afraid of. Marvin answered with truths of his own. Nothing profound. Nothing rehearsed. Just the quiet intimacy of two people deciding to drop their armor.
