”Among other things.” Marvin let the words hang for a moment. ”Once you make that choice, there’s no walking it back. This film will ask for more than your time. It’ll ask for pieces of you that won’t come back.”

Charlize didn’t hesitate.

”If it’s nudity you’re worried about...” She gave a dismissive shrug. ”I’m not. I’ve done it before. Marvin. I’ll sign whatever rider you need.”

Marvin laughed.

Not loudly.

Just enough for her to realize she’d completely missed his point. ”You still think like an actress.”

”And you don’t?”

”I think like the man writing the cheque.”

She frowned.

”I don’t care about seeing you naked, Charlize.”

”Then what are you asking?”

Marvin held her gaze. ”I’m asking you to stop looking like Charlize Theron.”

Silence.

”You’ll have to put on weight. Real weight.”

She said nothing.

”Thirty pounds, give or take.”

The colour slowly drained from her face.

”You’ll shave your eyebrows.”

Another beat.

”Your skin won’t look flawless anymore.”

He continued as calmly as if he were discussing next week’s weather.

”Prosthetic teeth. Damaged hair. No glamour. No safety net.”

Charlize stared at him.

He wasn’t asking her to play an ugly woman.

He was asking her to become one.

”The blonde...” Marvin said quietly. ”The woman every studio keeps trying to sell.” He shook his head. ”She has to disappear.”

For the first time since she’d approached him, Charlize had no immediate answer.

Every executive she’d met wanted to preserve her beauty.

Marvin was asking her to destroy it.

Not forever.

Long enough that audiences forgot it had ever been there. He wasn’t asking for her body; he was asking for her vanity.

He slipped a hand inside his jacket and withdrew a light-gold business card.

”This is my private number.”

She accepted it almost automatically. ”Call my office when your release schedule clears. Let’s make an official appointment at my Burbank office after the movie’s theatrical run is finished.”

She looked down at the card before lifting her eyes again.

”And if I say yes?”

”Then we’ll find out whether you’re as committed as you think you are.”

”You really believe that’s what it’ll take?”

”I don’t believe it.” His voice remained calm. ”I know it.”

Charlize looked at the card again, turning it slowly between her fingers.

It suddenly felt much heavier than paper.

By the time she looked up, Marvin had already stepped back into the crowd.

People drifted aside without realizing they were doing it.

Within moments, he was gone.

Charlize slipped the card into her handbag with surprising care. Her heart pounding, and carefully placed it into her designer handbag as if it were a loaded weapon.

For the first time in months, someone hadn’t told her what she wanted to hear.

He’d told her what it would cost.

The premiere of *The Others* couldn’t have ended on a stronger note.

As the final image faded and the credits rolled across the screen, the audience rose almost as one. The applause came first, then grew louder, until it filled the entire theatre. It wasn’t the polite standing ovation people gave because everyone else was standing. It lasted. Studio executives, veteran producers, critics, exhibitors—even competitors—remained on their feet.

Nicole Kidman received the loudest applause of the night.

Her performance was already being described in the lobby as the finest of her career. The fear, exhaustion and quiet desperation she brought to Grace never slipped into melodrama. She carried nearly every scene, and by the time the twist landed, many in the audience were openly admitting they hadn’t seen it coming.

Artistically, the premiere had delivered exactly what Miramax, Cruise/Wagner Productions, and Meyers Pictures wanted.

Commercially...

That was another conversation entirely.

Once the limousines began climbing into the Hollywood Hills and the champagne started flowing at the after-parties, the praise became noticeably more cautious.

”Brilliant film.”

”Beautifully made.”

”Kidman will be in every awards conversation.”

Those compliments were almost always followed by the same word.

But.

But is it really a summer movie?

But can audiences sit through something this quiet?

But where’s the spectacle?

The late 90s had conditioned Hollywood to think in terms of scale. The biggest box-office successes arrived with explosions, visual effects, alien invasions, asteroids, giant ships or world-ending disasters. A slow-burning gothic ghost story set almost entirely inside a lonely mansion didn’t resemble the kind of film that traditionally opened huge in July or August.

More than one executive quietly suggested that Miramax should have held it for autumn, where awards buzz and Halloween audiences might have worked together instead of asking the film to compete with popcorn entertainment.

Those conversations spread quickly.

By the following morning, the trade papers and entertainment reporters had picked up the same cautious mood. The reviews praised the craftsmanship, the performances and the ending, yet many articles questioned whether ordinary moviegoers would embrace something so restrained.

Hollywood had a habit of mistaking familiarity for certainty.

When a film didn’t fit an established pattern, the first instinct wasn’t optimism.

It was doubt.

And doubt always looked for someone to blame before the opening weekend had even begun.

The media was brutally unoptimistic about its commercial success. And they needed a scapegoat.

*Was it because of Nicole Kidman?*

By sunrise, the entertainment press had reached its verdict.

The newspapers landed on executives’ desks before they arrived at the studio.

Assistants clipped reviews.

Publicists highlighted favourable quotes with yellow markers.

Agents read every column over breakfast.

Across Los Angeles, New York, and London, one headline after another began shaping the narrative long before ordinary audiences bought a ticket.

The morning trades were ruthless.

> The New York Times: ”Nicole Kidman delivers the finest performance of her career, carrying *The Others* with remarkable restraint and quiet authority. Marvin Meyers once again demonstrates a gift for atmosphere, though this picture belongs almost entirely to Kidman.”

The review praised Marvin’s screenplay.

The headline praised Nicole.

> Variety: ”Can Nicole Kidman finally shed the industry’s lingering ’box-office poison’ label? *The Others* may provide the answer. Marvin Meyers has handed the Australian actress the strongest role of her career, but whether audiences follow remains the question worrying studio executives across town.”

The article spent nearly two pages discussing Nicole’s commercial history instead of Marvin’s script.

Exactly the kind of conversation Hollywood loved.

> The Hollywood Reporter: ”Technically elegant, emotionally restrained and superbly acted, *The Others* is another reminder that Marvin Meyers possesses extraordinary storytelling instincts. Even so, comparisons with The Sixth Sense are inevitable—and perhaps unfair. Audiences expecting another twist-driven crowd-pleaser may find this quieter ghost story surprisingly patient.”

> Entertainment Weekly: ”Is thirteen-year-old Marvin Meyers growing up too quickly? His latest screenplay trades shocking reveals for melancholy and atmosphere. It’s an ambitious gamble, anchored by Nicole Kidman’s haunting performance, though not everyone will appreciate its deliberate pace.”

> USA Today: ”The question surrounding *The Others* isn’t quality. It’s whether moviegoers are willing to buy Nicole Kidman as the sole attraction. Hollywood has underestimated audiences before. This weekend will tell us if it’s making the same mistake again.”

Across the Atlantic, the tabloids cared far less about cinema.

They cared about headlines.

> News of the World: ”Has Hollywood’s wonder boy fallen for Australia’s ice queen? Insiders claim Marvin Meyers insisted on Nicole Kidman despite studio scepticism, while longtime companion Lindsay has been noticeably absent from the film’s glittering publicity.”

The article offered no evidence.

It hardly mattered.

Evidence had never been the tabloid’s business model.

> The Sun: ”Kidman Gets the Golden Boy! Teen movie genius Marvin Meyers bets everything on Tom Cruise’s glamorous wife. Friends fear the young millionaire’s biggest gamble won’t be the film—but the beautiful leading lady stealing all the spotlight.”

Half the article discussed Nicole’s wardrobe from the premiere.

The other half invented a rivalry between her and Lindsay out of thin air.

> Entertainment Tonight: ”The cameras may be following Hollywood’s newest wonder boy, but once the lights go down, *The Others* belongs entirely to Nicole Kidman. Marvin Meyers may have written the screenplay and even appeared in the film, yet his presence fades beside the icy Australian beauty. The gamble? Kidman has spent years earning critical praise while failing to prove she can open a major picture on her own. Has Marvin placed the future of his production on Hollywood’s most beautiful question mark?”

> Premiere Magazine: ”Choosing Nicole Kidman as the sole face of *The Others* is either breathtaking confidence or breathtaking arrogance. Studio executives have quietly whispered the same phrase for years—’box-office poison’—despite her undeniable talent. Marvin Meyers has ignored every warning. If she’s finally ready to carry a blockbuster, he’ll look like a visionary. If she isn’t, the boy genius may discover that Hollywood has a long memory for expensive mistakes.”

> National Enquirer: ”HAS HOLLYWOOD’S BOY GENIUS FALLEN UNDER NICOLE’S SPELL? Friends insist thirteen-year-old millionaire Marvin Meyers fought to make Tom Cruise’s glamorous wife the heart of *The *Others, brushing aside industry warnings that she couldn’t sell tickets. Is the teenage prodigy’s admiration clouding his legendary instincts? Or has Nicole Kidman cast a spell powerful enough to gamble millions of dollars—and Marvin’s spotless reputation?”

> Daily Mail: ”Everyone expected another *The Sixth Sense*. Instead, Marvin Meyers delivered something quieter, colder, and far more patient. Critics may admire the restraint, but will audiences? Hollywood is asking a dangerous question this weekend: has the industry’s youngest sensation evolved... or has he simply forgotten what made moviegoers fall in love with him in the first place?”

The radio and tv weren’t much better.

As assistants hurried through agency corridors carrying coffee and stacks of freshly printed trades, televisions mounted inside reception areas replayed footage from the premiere on an endless loop. Nicole Kidman’s smile filled the screen. Marvin answered questions for barely thirty seconds before the broadcast cut back to another shot of her stepping onto the red carpet.

Even the background music seemed determined to push the story in one direction.

The haunting theme from *The Others* floated beneath every entertainment segment, giving the reports an air of elegance while the commentators quietly debated whether Nicole Kidman had finally become a bankable leading lady—or whether Marvin Meyers had made the first catastrophic mistake of his astonishing career.

> *”She embodies this unstable amalgam with a conviction that is in itself terrifying.”

>*”*The Others* is a flawed if interesting vehicle.”

> *”Marvin Meyers is a little too confident that style can substitute for substance.”

> *”Nicole Kidman gives the performance of the film.”

> *”Atmospheric rather than shocking.”

> *”A quieter, more patient ghost story.”

> *”Can Marvin repeat the phenomenon of *The Sixth Sense*, or was that lightning in a bottle?”

> *”Comparing this movie with *The Sixth Sense*, we feel a renewed admiration for the way M. Night Shyamalan was able to maintain tension...”

Almost no one asked whether the film itself was good.

Hollywood preferred a better story.

Had the industry’s teenage prodigy misjudged his biggest gamble?

Or had he wagered everything on the one actress the business still refused to believe in?

---

The gates of the Beverly Hills estate shut behind the last delivery car just as the California sun climbed over the hills.

The house was immaculate. Too immaculate.

The silence inside always felt rehearsed.

Nicole Kidman folded the morning edition of the Los Angeles Times onto the breakfast table a little harder than she intended. The porcelain coffee cup beside it rattled against its saucer.

She closed her eyes. Another headline. Another prediction.

Another writer convinced they already knew how the weekend would end.

For months she had lived with that feeling.

*Eyes Wide Shut* had finally reached cinemas after what felt like a lifetime. Stanley Kubrick’s perfectionism had stretched filming across years, consuming nearly every part of her life.

By the time production ended, Kubrick was gone, the film had divided critics, and the headlines had become less interested in the work than in the marriage standing behind it.

She and Tom had spent years answering the same questions.

Not about acting. Not about characters. About themselves.

Every interview somehow circled back to their marriage. Every premiere became another public examination.

The whispers had only grown louder. If one film disappointed, it was Nicole’s fault. If another succeeded, it belonged to Tom.

Hollywood rarely said it outright. It didn’t have to.

She had been in this business long enough to recognise the polite smile that meant, ’We’ll call your agent.’

She looked down at the review again.

The critics loved *The Others*.

They loved Grace.

Some had even called it the finest performance of her career. Then came the familiar sentence.

Whether audiences embrace such a restrained gothic thriller remains to be seen.

She told herself not to read those articles.

She always reads them anyway.

*The Others* rested on her shoulders.
