Nicole stood in the doorway, dressed in a stunning, simple white silk slip dress that clung desperately to her curves.

The warm amber lighting from the hallway turned the delicate fabric almost translucent, softly tracing the graceful lines of her statuesque figure.

As she stepped aside to let Marvin in, the deliberate play of light and shadow over her body made the moment feel breathtakingly dreamlike.

The sight was so gorgeous it took even Marvin’s breath away for a microscopic second.

Marvin’s eyes lingered on her form for a moment before he politely looked away, maintaining his gentlemanly facade. But the damage was done. The thin silk left nothing to the imagination beneath the backlight; it was blindingly obvious she wasn’t wearing much beneath the fabric—at least on the upper half.

She offered him a small smile. ”I’m glad you found the place.”

For the briefest instant, Marvin forgot to answer. It lasted less than a heartbeat.

Then the expression disappeared as neatly as it had come. ”I wasn’t exactly given difficult directions.”

His calm reply earned a quiet laugh from Nicole.

She stepped aside. ”Come in.”

As Marvin walked past her, the faint scent of her perfume drifted through the entryway—not overpowering, just enough to linger after she moved.

Nicole closed the door behind them.

The soft click echoed through the quiet house.

Unlike the sprawling Beverly Hills estate she shared with Tom, this villa felt lived in.

Books rested on side tables. Fresh flowers stood in simple glass vases. Paintings leaned casually against walls instead of hanging with mathematical precision.

There were photographs. Candles. Music stacked beside the stereo. Nothing looked arranged for a magazine shoot.

”It isn’t much by Hollywood standards,” Nicole said with an almost apologetic smile as she led him farther inside. ”But I bought it my second year here.”

She glanced around the room. ”It’s the first place that ever felt like mine.”

Marvin took his time looking around. ”I can tell.”

”You can?”

”You actually live here.”

Nicole laughed softly. ”I hope that’s a compliment.”

”It is.”

She relaxed a little. ”I’m hopeless at minimalism.”

”I noticed.”

”You’ve noticed already?”

”There are books everywhere.”

She smiled. ”Guilty.”

She wandered toward the sitting room. ”I found that sofa at the Fairfax Flea Market.”

She rested her fingertips along its back. ”Everyone thought I was mad. They said I could afford something far grander. But I liked this one.”

Marvin studied it for a moment before looking back at her. ”It suits the house.”

”You aren’t just saying that?”

”No.”

”I think expensive rooms usually look like expensive rooms.”

”This...” His eyes drifted around the space once more. ”...looks like someone actually comes home here.”

Nicole looked down with a quiet smile. ”Thank you.”

The words pleased her far more than compliments about the house ever should have. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

She crossed the room again, talking about where she’d found a lamp, why she’d chosen the paintings, how she’d insisted on restoring the old wooden shelves herself instead of replacing them.

Normally she wouldn’t have explained any of it. Tonight, the words simply kept coming. She wasn’t even sure why.

Perhaps because he actually listened. Not politely. Not out of obligation. He listened as though every small detail mattered because it mattered to her.

She became acutely aware of him following a few steps behind.

Not crowding her. Not touching her. Simply present.

The awareness alone was enough to warm her cheeks.

She wondered—not for the first time that evening—whether the dress had been too much.

She had changed three times before finally choosing it.

Elegant. Simple.

Just enough to feel feminine without looking as though she’d dressed for anyone in particular. Or at least that had been the intention.

Now she wasn’t nearly as convinced.

She tucked an escaped strand of blonde hair behind her ear, pretending to study one of the framed photographs on the shelf while stealing a glance toward him.

He wasn’t staring. He was looking. There was a difference.

Marvin’s gaze traced Nicole’s swaying figure as she walked—the elegant line of her bare back, the curve of her hips, the dip of her waist, and the long, pale legs exposed by the dress.

Nicole felt a rushing heat bloom across her chest, blushing fiercely as she spoke about flea markets.

Even with her back to him, she had the electrifying feeling that Marvin was intently watching her every movement. He didn’t seem to bother hiding his gaze at all, making her bite her lower lip in anticipation. She knew exactly what she was doing, and she knew that he knew the effect his gaze had on her system.

She was suddenly grateful she hadn’t spent the afternoon agonizing over which dress looked the most effortless or carefully applying makeup meant to look as though she wasn’t wearing any at all.

She glanced back over her shoulder. Marvin was already looking at her. Their eyes met for a fleeting moment before she looked away.

The corner of his mouth lifted in the faintest smile. ”You’ve been nervous ever since I walked in.”

Nicole let out a quiet, embarrassed laugh. ”Was it that obvious?”

”I noticed.”

She shook her head. ”I was hoping I hid it better than that.”

”You hid it well.” He smiled. ”You just forgot one thing.”

”And what’s that?”

”Your hands,”

Nicole blinked. ”My hands?”

”You’ve been fidgeting with your fingers the whole time,” Marvin said.

Instinctively, she looked down. He was right.

Her thumb kept returning to the base of her left ring finger, pausing there before gliding away as if searching for something out of habit. She hadn’t even realized she was doing it.

She laughed under her breath and let her hand fall. ”I suppose that gives me away.”

”It makes you human.”

For reasons she couldn’t explain, that simple answer pleased her far more than any compliment about the dress ever could.

A quiet silence settled between them.

Marvin let his gaze wander around the villa once more before returning to her figure

”Does Tom know about this place?”

The question caught her completely off guard.

Nicole’s fingers instinctively tightened around one another.

A faint blush crept across her cheeks.

She looked away for a moment, toward the windows overlooking the dark ocean, before answering.

”No.” Her voice wasn’t apologetic. ”He doesn’t.”

A small, bittersweet smile touched her lips. ”I don’t think he’s ever even seen it.”

She started walking again, slower this time, inviting Marvin to follow.

Her fingertips brushed lightly over the back of the sofa before drifting across an old bookshelf filled with worn novels and travel books.

”I bought it years ago,” she said quietly. ”Back when everything still felt... possible.”

She laughed softly at herself. ”I told everyone it was an investment.”

”It wasn’t.”

”It was an escape.” She paused near the windows.

Outside, the Pacific rolled endlessly beneath the moonlight.

”When Los Angeles becomes too loud... When the phones won’t stop ringing... When interviews become performances instead of conversations... I come here.”

Marvin stopped beside her, close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from him without either of them touching.

”And does it help?”

Nicole folded her arms loosely, her eyes remaining on the water. ”For a little while it did.”

”I make tea. I read. Sometimes I don’t do anything at all. I just listen to the ocean.”

She smiled faintly. ”It doesn’t ask questions. It doesn’t expect me to smile. It doesn’t care whether my last film opened to twenty million or two hundred.”

She glanced sideways at him. ”It just keeps coming back to shore.”

Marvin watched her for a long moment. ”Sounds lonely.”

Nicole gave a tiny shrug. ”It is.”

The admission came more easily than she expected.

”I suppose loneliness becomes... comfortable after enough years.” She looked around the room. ”That’s why I never hired permanent staff here. No housekeepers. No assistants. No security. No people listening from the next room.”

”I wanted one place where I could leave a cup on the table and know it’d still be there tomorrow.” A quiet laugh escaped her. ”It probably sounds ridiculous.”

”It sounds peaceful,” Marvin replied.

She looked at him, surprised. ”You really think so?”

”I do.” He slipped one hand into his pocket.

”Most successful people keep buying bigger houses. They rarely find somewhere they can actually rest.”

Nicole held his gaze. ”You understand that better than most people of my age.”

”I’ve never really been my age.”

She smiled. ”No... I don’t suppose you have.”

For a few moments neither of them spoke.

The silence no longer felt awkward.

It felt... shared.

Nicole drew a slow breath. ”Do you know why I invited you here instead of a restaurant?”

Marvin shook his head. ”I had a few guesses.”

She laughed. ”I imagine you did.”

Her expression softened. ”I was tired of meeting you somewhere that belonged to everyone else.”

She looked around the room. ”This place belongs to me. I wanted you to see the part of my life no magazine ever photographs.”

Her words hung quietly between them.

Marvin’s expression gentled. ”I’m glad you did.”

”So am I.”

The answer escaped before she had time to think about it.

She lowered her eyes with a faint, embarrassed smile. ”I haven’t said that to many people. I don’t think I’ve wanted to.”

Marvin took a slow step closer.

Not enough to crowd her.

Just enough that his voice no longer had to rise above the distant sound of the waves. ”So...”

His smile was small, almost teasing. ”It’s just the two of us tonight?”

Nicole looked up again.

The blush returned immediately. ”Yes. No assistants. No managers. No bodyguards.”

She met his eyes without looking away this time. ”No photographers. No interruptions.”

The corners of Marvin’s mouth lifted. ”That sounds considerably more relaxing than most Hollywood dinners.”

Nicole laughed, warmer now. ”I certainly hope so.”

Nicole didn’t know what was happening to her.

She had always prided herself on being composed. Even at premieres, during impossible interviews, or while enduring another wave of tabloid gossip, she rarely let anyone see her lose control.

Tonight, every bit of that discipline seemed to be slipping away.

’Am I actually trying to seduce him?’

The thought struck her so suddenly that she almost laughed at herself.

Then came the answer.

’I am.’

She closed her eyes for the briefest moment.

There was no point pretending otherwise anymore.

She had spent the entire afternoon choosing a dress that looked effortless after trying on nearly a dozen others. She had changed the lighting in the dining room twice because the first bulbs felt too cold. She had even driven across the city for fresh flowers, only to remove half of them because the arrangement looked too deliberate.

Nothing about tonight had been accidental.

Not the villa. Not the dinner. Not even the music quietly drifting through hidden speakers.

Every choice had been made with one person in mind.

The realization should have filled her with guilt. Instead, it left her strangely calm. For months she had felt invisible inside her own marriage.

Tonight...

For the first time in longer than she cared to admit, she wanted someone to look at her—not as a movie star, not as Tom Cruise’s wife, not as Hollywood’s latest headline.

Just... ...as a woman.

She turned toward him with a smile she hadn’t planned.

”Come on,” she said softly. ”I’ll show you the house.”

Marvin inclined his head. ”I’d like that.”

Nicole walked ahead, unhurried.

She knew he was following only a step or two behind.

She also knew she was suddenly far too aware of the silk brushing against her legs with every step.

The villa wasn’t large. That was precisely why she loved it.

”There isn’t much to see,” she said with a self-conscious laugh. ”Nothing here was designed by famous decorators.”

”I noticed.”

She glanced back. ”Is that your polite way of saying it needs work?”

”No.” He looked around carefully. ”It feels cozy.”

She smiled. ”I’ll take that as a compliment.”

”You should.”

She led him into a cozy sitting room where overflowing bookshelves lined one wall. ”I spend most evenings here when I escape the city.”

Marvin’s gaze drifted over the shelves. ”You actually read all of these?”

”I’ve read most of them.”

”You’ve got novels mixed with psychology, history and gardening.”

Nicole laughed. ”I never said I was organized.”

She pulled one weathered novel from the shelf.

”I bought this in London before I ever came to America.”

”I was homesick and couldn’t afford much.”

”So I bought books instead.”

Marvin smiled faintly. ”Cheaper than therapy.”

She looked at him with amused surprise. ”I’ve said almost exactly that.”

She guided him farther through the house.
