Then, almost without thought, she lifted her face. Their eyes met—soft, unguarded—and she leaned in.

Her lips touched his with a tenderness that held nothing hurried. The kiss was slow, warm, carrying the quiet certainty of everything she felt for him. He answered it just as gently, his free hand rising to rest at the small of her back, holding her close while the sea continued its patient rhythm beside them.

Seconds stretched, sweet and uncounted, before Nicole drew back just enough to rest her forehead against his for a heartbeat longer. Then she settled once more against his shoulder, a soft smile curving her mouth as she spoke in a teasing voice...

....

...

..

.

Inside the villa the air still hung heavy with the thick scent of sex, sweat, and spent bodies. Marvin, already composed and dressed in yesterday’s freshly pressed tailored clothes, stepped into the bedroom. Nicole lay deeply unconscious, body limp and thoroughly used, skin still faintly flushed, thighs marked and sticky. He gathered her exhausted form into his arms with care and carried her to the large bed, settling her gently against the sheets.

He drew the thin silk blanket up over her bare shoulders and leaned down to press a slow, lingering kiss to her cheek.

”Good night, my beautiful queen. Rest well,” he murmured, voice low and calm. He turned to leave, a smile of satisfaction on his face.

As his hand closed around the brass doorknob, Nicole’s heavy eyelids cracked open for the briefest moment. Through the haze she caught only his retreating silhouette. A soft, content smile touched her swollen lips.

”Marvin...” she breathed, the single word barely audible, before sleep claimed her again completely.

Marvin stepped out into the cool, salt-tinged Malibu night and slid into the waiting SUV. The quiet drive back to his estate in the hills passed without interruption. The old saying fit the night perfectly—arrive with the sunset, leave under the stars. And the stars shone clear, the hours spent with her already claimed.

The following week, the cinematic landscape still belonged to Marvin.

*The Others* refused to behave like a conventional horror film. Instead of collapsing after its opening weekend—the fate that had claimed countless thrillers before it—it tightened its grip on theaters across the country. In its second weekend, it overwhelmed every new challenger, pulling in another $25.8 million domestically. The hold was so extraordinary that exhibitors responded by expanding its theatrical run rather than reducing showtimes, allowing the film to remain comfortably at No. 1 for a second consecutive weekend.

By the end of its second week, the film’s domestic total had climbed to approximately $68 million. Overseas, the story was unfolding much the same way. Having already opened across major markets including the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and much of Western Europe, *The Others* was proving that its eerie atmosphere translated effortlessly across cultures. International audiences embraced it just as enthusiastically, pushing its overseas earnings to roughly $58 million.

Combined with its North American performance, the film had already amassed an astonishing $126 million worldwide in barely two weeks.

More impressive still was the fact that the global rollout had only just begun.

Several lucrative territories—including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Russia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and a number of Eastern European markets—were still days to weeks away from their theatrical premieres. Industry analysts noted that the film hadn’t even reached many of its biggest remaining international opportunities, making every revised projection seem outdated almost as soon as it was published.

For a gothic supernatural thriller produced on a modest budget, the numbers bordered on the absurd. Hollywood had already stopped asking whether the film would make a profit—that question had been answered days earlier. Now the only debate was just how high its final gross could climb.

The timing made the achievement all the more remarkable.

The summer of 1999 was one of the most fiercely contested seasons Hollywood had ever seen. Just weeks earlier, *Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace* had stormed into theaters, shattered opening-weekend records, and by late July had already amassed more than $350 million at the North American box office on its relentless march toward worldwide dominance. Disney’s *Tarzan* continued drawing families in huge numbers, while Adam Sandler’s *Big Daddy* proved to be one of the season’s biggest comedy successes. Every Friday brought another studio hoping to carve out a piece of an already overcrowded marketplace.

Under ordinary circumstances, a quiet supernatural thriller would have been buried beneath such giants.

Instead, theaters found themselves adding late-night screenings just to satisfy demand. Word of mouth spread faster than any advertising campaign could have achieved.

Audiences returned with friends and family, while countless moviegoers who rarely watched horror films bought tickets simply to discover what everyone was talking about. The haunting atmosphere, restrained performances, eerie background theme, and lingering emotional weight transformed *The Others* from a successful release into the unexpected phenomenon of the summer.

Its success came at the expense of another horror film that had been expected to dominate headlines.

*The Blair Witch Project* had arrived surrounded by unprecedented internet buzz.

Produced on a shoestring budget and marketed with remarkable ingenuity, the found-footage thriller was supposed to rewrite the rules of independent filmmaking. In another summer, it probably would have. But Marvin’s *The Others* had stolen the conversation before its nationwide expansion could fully ignite. As audiences argued over which film was more terrifying, the box office told a different story.

*The Blair Witch Project* still became a profitable success, earning critical acclaim and proving that a tiny independent production could capture the world’s imagination. Yet much of the cultural storm that once seemed destined to belong to it was gradually eclipsed by *The Others*.

One unsettled audiences with raw realism, convincing them they were watching something disturbingly authentic. The other drew them into a world of whispered prayers, dark hallways, and lingering silence, wrapping every scene in an atmosphere so rich that the line between the theater and the story seemed to disappear. Marvin’s haunting score lingered beneath it all, never demanding attention, only quietly tightening its grip until every revelation struck with devastating emotional weight.

Together, the two films transformed the summer into an unexpected celebration of horror. One redefined what independent filmmaking could achieve; the other reminded Hollywood that elegance, restraint, and emotion could be every bit as frightening. At the box office, however, Marvin’s ghost story continued to cast the longer shadow.

Its third weekend only deepened the mystery.

The dreaded second-weekend collapse never came. Neither did the third. The Others surrendered remarkably little, collecting another $19.4 million domestically and pushing its North American total to roughly $95 million. It remained one of the strongest-performing films in the country, an astonishing feat for an original horror picture competing against blockbuster franchises and studio tentpoles.

Studio executives stared at the daily figures in disbelief. Analysts rewrote their forecasts for a second consecutive week. Every prediction insisting the film would burn brightly before fading away was quietly abandoned.

The headlines grew bolder with every passing day.

”The Summer’s Most Unstoppable Original Hit.”

”A Ghost Story That Refuses to Fade.”

”Hollywood’s Boy Wonder Defies the Box Office Once Again.”

”How Many Times Can Marvin Meyers Rewrite the Rules?”

> The Los Angeles Times: ”Three weeks into its theatrical run, *The Others* continues to perform with the kind of extraordinary consistency usually reserved for beloved family films and holiday blockbusters. Industry analysts have searched for conventional explanations—marketing, timing, competition—but none adequately explain why Marvin Meyers’ films seem almost immune to the front-loaded declines that define modern box office performance. Audiences aren’t merely attending his films. They’re returning with friends, generating the one commodity studios have never learned to manufacture: genuine word of mouth.”

> The New York Times: ”Nicole Kidman has spent years searching for the role that would finally silence persistent questions about her commercial appeal. She appears to have found it in *The Others*. Her restrained, emotionally devastating performance anchors every frame of the picture. Marvin Meyers supplied the screenplay, the score, and the creative vision, but it is Kidman who gives that vision its haunting human face. If awards conversations begin this early—and they already have—her name will be impossible to ignore.”

> The Washington Post: ”Another Marvin Meyers success should no longer surprise anyone. What deserves closer examination is the remarkable consistency with which he elevates the people around him. Nicole Kidman enters this release carrying years of industry skepticism regarding her box-office drawing power. She leaves it with renewed credibility among audiences and executives alike. Whether this marks a permanent shift or the beginning of a new Chapter in her career remains uncertain, but one fact is undeniable: Hollywood will view her very differently on Monday than it did three weeks ago.”

> Variety: ”Studios are quietly revising more than weekend projections. Marvin Meyers is rapidly becoming one of the industry’s safest creative investments. His films don’t simply open well—they hold, expanding through audience enthusiasm rather than marketing saturation. That distinction has executives paying close attention. Several competing studios are already reassessing how much creative freedom they are willing to surrender if it means securing a future Meyers project.”

> Entertainment Weekly: ”*The Others* has accomplished something increasingly rare in modern Hollywood. It became an event without relying on explosions, franchise recognition, or spectacle. Viewers are recommending it because they want to watch someone else experience the ending for the first time. That’s the kind of cultural momentum money can’t buy.”

> Premiere Magazine: ”Nicole Kidman spent much of the decade being described as an elegant movie star still waiting for her defining role. She may have finally found it. Marvin Meyers has once again demonstrated an uncanny instinct for recognizing not simply talented actors, but the precise moment their careers are ready to transform. Hollywood has noticed.”

> The Sun: ”Nicole Kidman has finally, spectacularly shed the dreaded ’box office poison’ label that has plagued her for years. But make no mistake, she owes this career resurrection entirely to Marvin Meyers. His airtight script, his haunting musical score, and his absolute, controlling involvement as a special producer have been the master keys to the unprecedented success of this thriller.”

> Billboard: ”As Hollywood continues dissecting the astonishing box-office performance of *The Others*, Marvin has quietly created another phenomenon on the music charts.

Released in early July, *That Girl* has become the fastest-selling commercial single of the summer, moving an estimated 2.2 million physical copies worldwide in just three weeks, including nearly 900,000 copies in the United States alone. The explosive debut has already established it as one of the biggest single launches of 1999. Retailers from Tower Records to Virgin Megastores continue reporting shortages as distributors struggle to keep pace with demand.

The single has stormed past the summer’s biggest hits, climbing from No. 78 to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in barely three tracking weeks while simultaneously seizing No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales chart through sheer demand. It has also reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom, No. 2 in Australia, No. 3 in Canada, No. 1 in Japan’s International Singles Chart, and continues to rise across much of Europe.

Along the way, *That Girl* has surged past established summer giants, climbing alongside—and in several territories overtaking Ricky Martin’s ”*Livin’ la Vida Loca,*” the Backstreet Boys’ ”*I Want It That Way,*” Jennifer Lopez’s ”*If You Had My Love*,” TLC’s ”*No Scrubs*,” Christina Aguilera’s ”*Genie in a Bottle*,” Smash Mouth’s ”*All Star*,” and Eiffel 65’s ”*Blue (Da Ba Dee)*.” Few expected a single to challenge the defining pop anthems of the summer. Fewer still expected it to overtake several of them.

Radio programmers report listener demand continuing to accelerate across every major market. Requests for *That Girl* have remained remarkably consistent throughout the month, with stations from Los Angeles and New York to London, Sydney, and Tokyo increasing its daily rotation in response to audience demand.

Industry executives note that Marvin Meyers’ extraordinary visibility—dominating both the box office and entertainment headlines—has only amplified interest in the Columbia Records single, creating the rare spectacle of one success continually fueling another without either release being directly connected.

Industry analysts estimate the single is now selling well over 140,000 physical copies every day worldwide, an astonishing pace for the summer of 1999.
