The decision had been made.

Charlize Theron would become the first actress whose path to an Academy Award Marvin intended to shape from beginning to end.

His thoughts drifted beyond the office.

Hollywood’s awards season had always revolved around influence as much as talent.

Harvey Weinstein hadn’t invented Oscar campaigns.

He had simply understood them better than almost anyone else.

He knew which festivals mattered.

Which critics to court. Which screenings to host. Which conversations to encourage. It was a system. And every system could be improved.

Marvin had no interest in imitating Harvey.

Unlike Harvey, who was a slave to his crude human lusts, Marvin had no lower limit, no fear of scandal, and a supernatural understanding of desire.

He intended to build something far more powerful.

A reputation. One Oscar-winning performance would be called luck.

Two would raise eyebrows. Three would become a pattern.

After that, actors would start whispering among themselves.

”Work with Marvin.”

”He knows how to find award-winning roles.”

”He can get you there.”

Hollywood loved success.

It also loved certainty.

The day people began believing that a role written by Marvin Meyers came with a genuine chance at an Academy Award, the industry’s biggest stars wouldn’t need convincing.

They would come to him. The press would eventually give it a name. The Meyers Touch.

Marvin found the thought quietly satisfying.

---

Across town, in the executive offices of Miramax Pictures, the afternoon had already dissolved into cigars, expensive liquor, and self-congratulation.

Harvey Weinstein occupied the largest sofa in the room as if it had been built around him. A thick Cuban cigar rested between his fingers, another gift delivered this morning in an elegant wooden box from an actress eager to remind him she existed before awards season.

Harvey appreciated gifts.

More accurately, he appreciated what they admitted.

Power.

Bob Weinstein sat opposite him with a glass of bourbon, flipping absent-mindedly through a stack of trade magazines. Ben Affleck lounged nearby, one leg crossed over the other, while Matt Damon remained in the armchair closest to the window, quietly nursing a Scotch.

Harvey took a slow drag before grinning.

”You know...” Smoke drifted lazily toward the ceiling. ”People love pretending Hollywood runs on talent.”

He chuckled. ”It doesn’t.”

”It runs on timing.”

”And relationships.”

Ben laughed immediately. ”And on whether Harvey Weinstein likes you.”

Harvey pointed the cigar at him. ”Now you’re learning.”

Bob rolled his eyes without looking up. ”You’ve been telling him that for years.”

”Because it’s true.”

Harvey leaned back. ”Meryl understands it.”

He tapped the cigar into a crystal ashtray. ”Brilliant actress. Smart woman. She knows how to play respectable in public. Smile for the cameras. Shake every hand. Say the right thing.”

”And behind closed doors...” He shrugged. ”She understands how this town actually works.”

Ben nodded eagerly. ”Even Meryl Streep has to keep you happy.”

Harvey laughed. ”Nobody’s above the game.”

Matt finally spoke. ”She’s survived because she knows which fights aren’t worth having.”

Harvey glanced toward him. ”Exactly.”

He took a slow sip before speaking. ”To some, it’s blackmail. To others, it’s dirty politics. To me, it’s business.”

Ben smiled. ”You’re still the kingmaker.”

”That’s why everybody eventually ends up in this building.”

Harvey’s grin widened. ”They always do.”

”Maybe not the first picture.”

”Maybe not the second.”

”But sooner or later...”

”They’re all asking for something.”

He took another pull from the cigar. ”Meryl’s easy. I can help her if it makes sense. She’s earned that much.”

Then he snorted. ”Not my type, though.”

Bob sighed. ”Here we go.”

”What?” Harvey spread his hands. ”I’m allowed to have standards.”

”Beautiful women exist.”

”I’m not going to pretend otherwise.”

He counted them off with the cigar. ”Nicole Kidman. Charlize Theron. Jennifer Connelly. Cate Blanchett. Now those are movie stars.”

Ben smirked. ”I knew this conversation was headed there.”

Harvey ignored him. ”That South African girl...” He leaned back, almost admiring the thought. ”She’s hungry. You can see it the second she walks into a room. She’s still fighting for financing. Still chasing the right script. Still trying to convince people she’s more than the blonde from *The Devil’s Advocate*.”

He smiled. ”That combination makes people... flexible.”

Matt looked at him over the rim of his glass. ”You’ve met her once.”

Harvey shrugged. ”Once is enough. You do this long enough, you learn to read people before they open their mouths.”

”Some arrive expecting the world to hand them everything. Some arrive expecting to earn it. And some...” He smiled to himself. ”...reach the point where they’ll convince themselves there isn’t much difference.”

The room fell quiet.

Bob didn’t look up from his magazine.

”You’ve already crossed three names off your own list.”

Harvey snorted. ”Nicole?” He waved the cigar dismissively. ”Cruise keeps that situation under lock and key.”

”Too much attention. Too much baggage. And frankly, too much trouble.”

He moved on.

”Jennifer doesn’t play the game, as far as I can tell.”

”Does her movie, collects her cheque, and the minute filming wraps, she disappears.”

”You won’t find her working every party in town. She doesn’t seem interested in the celebrity circus.”

Harvey snorted. ”Makes her a pain in the ass to do business with.”

”I’ve never liked chasing people who make themselves hard to find.”

”Cate...” He laughed. ”Cate’s clever.”

”Too clever.”

”She knows how to tell you ’no’ without making you feel like you’ve been turned down.”

”You can spend months chasing someone like that and still end up exactly where you started.”

Ben nodded.

”I’ve noticed.”

Harvey tapped ash into the crystal tray.

”But Charlize...”

A slow grin spread across his face.

”Charlize still believes every film could be the one.”

”Every meeting matters.”

”Every introduction might change her career.”

”That’s a useful place to be.”

Ben leaned forward. ”I met her at the Vanity Fair Oscar party. She’s ambitious. Really ambitious. I still know someone at her agency. I could reach out.”

Harvey looked genuinely pleased. ”Do it.”

Bob finally lowered the magazine. ”For what?”

Ben gave an easy shrug.

”Lunch.”

”A conversation.”

”See what she’s wants.”

”If she’s still looking for financing...”

Harvey finished the sentence for him. ”...she’ll make time.”

He smiled behind the smoke. ”They always find time.”

Matt took another sip of Scotch.

He said nothing.

In Hollywood, the most dangerous conversations rarely sounded like threats.

They sounded like opportunities.

Matt remained silent.

He’d been in enough rooms like this to know Harvey’s confidence usually arrived several steps ahead of reality.

Harvey had stopped seeing warning signs whenever they threatened his certainty.

Matt quietly finished his drink.

He said nothing.

Sometimes the smartest thing a man could do in Hollywood... ...was let somebody else underestimate the competition.

—

Bzzz... Bzzz...

The vibration of a mobile phone broke the quiet between them.

Charlize blinked, momentarily pulled out of the conversation. She reached into her handbag, found the Nokia by touch, and glanced at the screen.

’Ben Affleck.’

A faint crease appeared between her brows.

’Why him?’

They’d met briefly at a Vanity Fair party months earlier. Pleasant enough. A few introductions, a little harmless flirting, the usual exchange of numbers through agents and publicists the usual. Afterwards Ben had asked her out more than once.

She’d declined every time.

Not because he wasn’t charming. He could be.

But charm wasn’t what she was looking for.

Ben was talented, successful, even newly crowned with an Oscar, yet every road around him seemed to lead back to Harvey Weinstein. Charlize had spent enough time in Hollywood to know the difference between a man building his own and one who prospered inside somebody else’s.

The phone continued to vibrate in her hand.

Strange.

He hadn’t called in months.

Charlize glanced across the desk.

Marvin was watching her quietly, one hand wrapped around a glass of juice, looking neither impatient nor curious.

”I’m sorry,” she said. ”Do you mind? It could be important.”

Marvin leaned back. ”Of course.” His tone was easy. ”Take it.”

Charlize almost stood out of habit.

Then she stopped.

Leaving the room now would look secretive, especially after spending the last hour asking him to risk millions of dollars on her passion project. Investors noticed little things.

She wasn’t about to give him a reason to wonder.

She settled back into the chair instead. ”If you don’t mind,” she said with a small smile, ”I’ll answer it here.”

Marvin made a faint gesture with his hand. ”As if I’m going to eavesdrop.”

The corner of Charlize’s mouth lifted. ”I suppose that was unfair.”

”It was.”

She laughed softly before pressing the answer button.

”Hello, Ben.”

As she spoke, she unconsciously crossed one leg over the other and leaned back into the chair. It wasn’t a calculated performance so much as second nature by now. Hollywood meetings blurred into auditions, negotiations, and social encounters until confidence itself became part of the uniform. She knew exactly how to occupy a room, how to hold eye contact, how to smile just enough to invite conversation without surrendering control.

Across the desk, Marvin didn’t appear to notice. Or, more accurately, he noticed and assigned it no value at all.

His attention had already drifted back to the book lying open beside his glass, as though the fate of a film remained infinitely more interesting than the woman trying to sell it.

Charlize pressed the call button and lifted the phone to her ear.

”Ben.”

A faint smile touched her lips. ”It’s been a while.”

Ben Affleck’s voice came through immediately, energetic enough that she had to pull the phone a fraction away from her ear.

He skipped the small talk.

Typical.

Charlize listened in silence, one elbow resting on the arm of the chair. As Ben kept talking, she absently rolled her lower lip between her teeth, her expression growing harder with every sentence.

Across the desk, Marvin watched without interrupting.

”...Harvey?” Her eyebrows rose. ”He wants to meet me?”

She listened again. ”This week?”

Another pause. ”And this is about *Monster*?”

Her fingers tapped lightly against the leather armrest. ”I see.”

Ben’s enthusiasm only seemed to grow.

Charlize let him finish. ”So you’re telling me Miramax will finance the picture... ...and Harvey’s willing to throw the full weight of the studio behind an awards campaign.”

For a brief second, the offer carried exactly the weight it was supposed to.

Everyone in Hollywood knew what Miramax could do once awards season began.

Then her eyes drifted back to Marvin.

He hadn’t spoken.

He hadn’t tried to interrupt.

He simply sat there, one hand around his glass, wearing the same calm expression he’d worn all afternoon.

No anxiety. No impatience. No attempt to compete for her attention.

The confidence irritated her almost as much as it intrigued her.

Most powerful men became possessive the moment another offer appeared.

Marvin looked almost amused.

Charlize found herself studying him for a heartbeat longer than she intended.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

She shifted slightly in her chair, leaning forward as if to hear Ben more clearly. The movement drew the line of her jacket tighter across her figure. It wasn’t accidental.

Normally men noticed. Normally their eyes followed.

Marvin’s didn’t. He was looking at her face. Waiting for her answer.

That, more than anything, unsettled her.

She already knew enough about Harvey Weinstein to understand what meetings like this often became. Nothing was ever said outright. Doors closed. Careers were discussed. Favours accumulated. Debts appeared where none had existed before.

She had spent years learning how to step around those traps without pretending they weren’t there.

Across the desk sat another producer.

Very Young. Powerful. Impossibly Handsome, Impossible to read. Never failed.

Yet for the last two hours he’d spoken about budgets, scripts, performances and audiences—and not once had he suggested the sort of bargain she’d quietly learned to expect from nearly all men in this business.

The contrast wasn’t lost on her.

”I’m sorry, Ben.” Her voice was warm, but final. ”I appreciate you thinking of me.”

She listened to whatever protest came back. ”No.”

Another pause. ”I’ve already committed to another conversation.”

She glanced at Marvin, meeting his eyes for just a moment. ”And I’d like to see where that leads.”

Ben tried again.

Charlize smiled to herself. ”I know how Harvey works.”

”So do you.”

Silence.

”Tell him thank you.”

”But I’m passing.”

She ended the call before he could reopen the discussion.

The phone clicked shut.

Charlize slipped the phone back into her handbag and looked across the desk.

For the first time since she’d walked into the office, she looked genuinely uncomfortable.

”I’m sorry,” she said. ”That was incredibly rude.”

Marvin rested his forearms on the desk. ”I’ve survived worse interruptions.”

A reluctant smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
