Industry analysts estimate the single is now selling well over 140,000 physical copies every day worldwide, an astonishing pace for the summer of 1999. Retailers continue reporting shortages in several major markets as Columbia Records rushes additional shipments to stores. With multiple songs from Marvin’s catalog still charting internationally, music executives are beginning to describe him as one of the few artists capable of launching a blockbuster standalone single while simultaneously headlining the biggest film in theaters—a combination virtually unheard of in the modern entertainment industry.

Inside the Recording Academy, awards-season conversations have begun months earlier than usual. While no vote is ever guaranteed, several veteran members privately admit it would take an extraordinary upset to prevent Marvin Meyers from once again dominating the Grammy ballot. Having already collected nine Grammy Awards in barely two years, the thirteen-year-old phenomenon now appears poised to extend one of the most unprecedented runs in modern music history.

> Entertainment Tonight: ”For the boy genius Marvin, it is simply another flawless, multi-million-dollar success to add to his growing empire. But for Nicole Kidman, she still has much more to prove to the studios. A single, managed success does not guarantee the next one. She still needed one or two more of his scripts, with him guiding her through them.

What had begun as a modestly budgeted supernatural thriller was rapidly becoming one of the defining cinematic events of 1999. Standing shoulder to shoulder with the year’s biggest studio spectacles—and in some weekends standing above them—it had accomplished what few believed possible.

Against franchises with enormous marketing campaigns and productions costing several times more, *The Others* had proven that atmosphere, storytelling, and Marvin’s seemingly unstoppable music and fan groups could still make moviegoers choose fear over spectacle.

---

Sitting alone in his Burbank office, Marvin folded the latest trade paper onto his desk, the corner of his mouth lifting into a quiet smile.

’Exactly as expected.’

The critics praised *The Others*. They praised its atmosphere, its restraint, its ending. But beneath every glowing review lay the same unspoken conclusion.

Marvin Meyers did it again.

Nicole’s performance received admiration as well, yet almost every article carried an invisible asterisk beside her name. She was excellent... under Marvin’s direction. She was surprisingly effective... opposite Marvin. She had finally found the right collaborator.

Not one of them realized what they were really saying.

To Hollywood, Nicole hadn’t succeeded. Marvin had succeeded through Nicole.

He tapped the newspaper lightly with a finger.

That single misconception was worth more than any advertising campaign.

The industry loved putting people into neat little boxes. Once it decided someone needed another person’s guidance, every future success became borrowed, while every failure became personal. It was an invisible prison built from praise disguised as compliments.

Nicole would feel it soon enough.

Executives would smile politely before asking whether Marvin was attached.

Producers would praise her performance before wondering aloud if lightning could strike twice.

Directors would chase the magic of *The Others*, never quite believing she could create it without him standing somewhere behind the camera.

None of them would realize what they were doing.

Neither would she.

At first, it would merely be frustrating. Then exhausting. Eventually... Lonely. And loneliness had an interesting effect on people.

It stripped away pride. A person who felt isolated didn’t look for the loudest voice in the room.

Hollywood’s faith was always temporary. Success bought admiration. Failure bought silence.

He would never treat her that way.

When everyone else questioned her, he would remind her who she was. When one door closed, he would already be opening another. When doubt found her, certainty would already be waiting in his hands.

He would quietly become the one constant in her life. The person who never doubted her talent when the trades questioned it. The one who offered another script when others hesitated.

People rarely noticed dependence while it was forming.

It arrived one gesture at a time. One reassurance. One success. One moment of vulnerability answered by unwavering certainty.

Until, one day, the thought of moving forward without that person felt strangely... impossible.

Not because he wished to control her.

Because, to him, that was what love was supposed to be.

People always spoke about love as though it meant freedom.

Marvin had never understood that. Love wasn’t measured by distance. It was measured by how completely their lives became his.

Trust became habit. Habit became Reliance. Reliance became devotion. There was no force in it. No command. No chains.

Only the quiet certainty that the safest place in the world was beside the person who had never stopped believing in you.

He genuinely believes that complete possession and complete devotion are the highest forms of love.

Marvin understood that better than most. An Incubus didn’t just conquer through seduction.

Desire was merely the invitation. The body opened the first door. Trust unlocked the second. The heart opened the third of its own accord.

Everything after that happened so gradually the person often look for comfort, convincing themselves that what they felt had always been love, when in truth their life had slowly begun to orbit someone else’s.

By then...

Walking away no longer felt like freedom. It felt like losing the only place they had ever truly belonged.

Nicole would stop imagining a future that didn’t include him. She wouldn’t notice when it happened.

Neither would anyone else.

The delightful notion brought a subtle smile to Marvin’s face.

To him, there was nothing tragic about that. It was simply love, seen through the eyes of a demon.

And Marvin had never been particularly good at loving halfway.

Once he decided someone belonged in his life, he didn’t simply leave her to chance. He built around her—opportunities, security, a future he could shape with his own hands. He gave them things Hollywood rarely gave anyone for free: certainty and somewhere to belong.

He had already done it with Paris Hilton.

The thought brought a faint smile to his face.

He had given her the *Legally Blonde* script and storyboard through Meyers Pictures, and by now the project had moved well beyond the point where it existed only as pages on Marvin’s desk. The pieces were beginning to fall into place—development, early production planning, the people needed to turn his drawings into an actual film.

The script had been logged into the studio’s production system, copies distributed to the appropriate departments, and the storyboard handed to the production team so they could begin turning Marvin’s story into something that could actually be filmed.

The work was happening at Meyers Pictures’ new production offices.

The building still smelled faintly of fresh paint. Some offices had only been occupied for a few weeks, several conference rooms were still missing furniture Amy had ordered, and filing cabinets stood against walls that had yet to acquire anything personal. Phones rang from offices where people were still learning one another’s names.

The studio had been operating for barely a month.

Yet *Legally Blonde* and *Let The Right One In* was already forcing it to function like a company that had been making movies for years.

The first major task was the budget.

Nobody simply looked at Marvin’s screenplay and decided what the movie would cost. The Production Department began the initial script breakdown, working with the production manager, line producer, first assistant director and department heads to identify everything required to put each sequence on screen: principal cast and extras, locations, sets, costumes, props, vehicles, makeup and hair, stunts, special effects, equipment and other production requirements.

The storyboard made the process more precise and much easier. It showed the production team what Marvin actually intended to put in front of the camera instead of leaving them to interpret the screenplay alone.

A scene that occupied only a few lines on a page could require an entire production operation.

A courtroom sequence meant finding or constructing a suitable courtroom, dressing it, filling it with background performers, providing legal costumes and allowing enough time to light and shoot the scene. A Beverly Hills exterior required location fees, permits, parking, possible traffic control, security and restrictions on shooting hours. A college campus, boutique, apartment, restaurant, law office or house each had its own costs and logistical problems.

The location department began assembling possibilities, photographing them and collecting availability, access restrictions, permits and preliminary quotes for the production file. The production designer compared those locations with the storyboard, determining which could be used largely as they were and which would require extensive dressing or construction.

A location that appeared inexpensive could become more expensive once preparation and restoration were included. In some cases, building a controlled set would actually cost less than transforming an existing location into what the movie required.

Casting was being developed at the same time.

The casting department prepared breakdowns for the principal and supporting roles while checking actor availability, salary expectations and scheduling conflicts. Preliminary casting choices were then translated into estimated costs, including travel and accommodation where necessary.

The same process extended to the crew.

Producer, director, director of photography, production designer, costume designer, editor, assistant directors, unit production manager, script supervisor, camera and lighting crews, sound, makeup and hair, props, set decoration, transportation and the rest of the production staff all had to be accounted for.

The costume department had already begun its own breakdown.

The characters’ wardrobes had to be planned according to the script and shooting schedule, not simply chosen for appearance. The department determined which clothes could be purchased or rented, which required alterations and where duplicate pieces would be necessary for continuity. Costumes that became dirty, damaged or otherwise changed during a scene required additional versions.

The art department was doing the same with everything occupying the physical world of the film. Furniture, office equipment, signs, props and set dressing were divided between items that could be rented, purchased, fabricated or brought in from existing inventory.

Even minor expenses mattered. Hundreds of small purchases could become a significant portion of a production budget once accumulated across dozens of shooting days.

The preliminary shooting schedule then became another major part of the calculation.

The assistant director’s department grouped scenes by location and cast availability wherever possible, reducing company moves and unnecessary night work. The objective was to determine the shortest practical schedule without compromising the movie.

Every additional shooting day carried another day’s worth of crew salaries, equipment rentals, transportation, meals, insurance and location expenses. Cutting even a few days could save a substantial amount, while an overly aggressive schedule could create problems that cost far more during production.

Equipment requirements were calculated alongside the schedule. The cinematography department prepared camera, lens, lighting and grip requirements, while sound prepared its own equipment list. Production vehicles, transportation and rental-house costs were added where Meyers Pictures did not already have the necessary equipment.

Insurance was also built into the production plan, covering cast, crew, equipment and locations, along with workers’ compensation, general liability and other required coverage.

Then came post-production.

The movie’s cost did not end when filming wrapped. Editorial, sound editing, dialogue replacement, Foley, music, scoring, licensing, sound mixing, color timing, optical work, titles, visual effects where required, final mastering and delivery materials all needed preliminary estimates.

Marketing and distribution were calculated separately from the physical production cost. Advertising, trailers, television spots, posters, publicity, theatrical prints, premieres and domestic distribution expenses would require their own budgets.

Because Meyers Pictures was only a month old, Marvin had insisted that every assumption be documented.

The production office therefore built the budget from the bottom up.

The first figure was only a preliminary estimate.

Then the revisions began.

A location quote came back higher than expected. Another proved cheaper. A costume that had originally been expected to require construction could be rented. A set could be redressed instead of rebuilt. A scheduling change could eliminate a shooting day, while an actor’s availability could force another sequence to be moved.

Each adjustment affected something else. The schedule changed. Crew costs changed. Location costs changed. The budget changed with them.

The line producer eventually presented the revised production budget to the production executive for review. Every major department was examined, from cast and locations to art, wardrobe, equipment, insurance and post-production. Payroll taxes, fringes, residual obligations, guild requirements and contingency had to be accounted for rather than hidden inside a vague miscellaneous category.

The production budget was revised again.

Once the production side was stable, the package moved to finance.

The production department could build the budget, but it could not authorize Meyers Pictures to spend the money.
