But that pristine illusion of paradise shattered in the dead of night. The terrifying jolt of the impact threw them to the floor, accompanied by a deafening shriek of tearing metal reverberating through the very spine of the massive ship. The cruise liner struck an iceberg, opening a fatal, gaping wound deep within its steel hull.

The warm energy of their honeymoon instantly extinguished, replaced by the shrill panic of blaring alarms, the frantic screams echoing from the upper decks, and the horrifying, unnatural tilt of the floor beneath their feet.

Their rush for survival quickly devolved into a claustrophobic nightmare.

The deck tilted sharply beneath her feet. Icy ocean spray lashed against her skin, stinging her cheeks like shattered glass.

Miranda clung to the varnished wooden railing of the great ship, her knuckles turning white from the strain. Beside her, Marvin braced his boots against the steep incline of the deck. He wore a sodden tuxedo, his dark hair plastered to his forehead by the freezing rain. Yet his eyes held a steady, grounding calm defying the chaos around them.

”We have to jump,” he said. His voice cut cleanly through the sounds of groaning metal, snapping cables, and the panicked screams of the passengers.

They plunged together into the freezing black water. The cold stole the breath from her lungs, seizing her muscles. When she surfaced, gasping for air, Marvin already waited there. He hoisted her onto a drifting wooden door panel, the splintered edges rough against her freezing hands.

He stayed in the water, clinging to the edge of the wood. His lips turned a pale, dangerous shade of blue.

”Miranda,” he said, his tone unwavering. ”You must survive. Live a long, full life. Have children, grow old, and pass peacefully in a warm bed—not here. Not in the freezing dark.”

He loosened his grip, preparing to slip away into the depths to ensure the wood stayed afloat for her.

Panic seized her throat. ”I’m not Rose!” she sobbed, reaching into the freezing water to grab the collar of his ruined shirt. ”And I won’t let my Jack leave me. If we go, we go together!”

She pulled him close, wrapping her arms tightly around his chest. She squeezed him against her, refusing to let the ocean drag him away.

She squeezed so tight her arms ached. Her chest ached. It physically hurt.

Miranda’s eyes snapped open.

The icy Atlantic dissolved, replaced by the soft morning sunlight filtering through the curtains of the San Marino guest bedroom.

She blinked, disoriented by the sudden warmth. The ache in her chest remained. She looked down. Her arms locked in a vice grip around a solid torso. Her face buried against the chest.

”Marvin! You survived!” she gasped. The lingering panic of the nightmare spilled from her lips before her waking brain could catch the words.

The chest beneath her shook with quiet laughter.

Miranda froze. She tilted her head up. Marvin lay beside her, propped up on one elbow, his head resting on his hand. His eyes crinkled at the corners, bright with amusement.

The memories of the previous night rushed back. The teasing over the towel. The story about the rainy logging town and the pale vampires. The rhythmic cadence of his voice lulling her into a deep, dreamless sleep. She spent the entire night curled against his side.

A sudden flush of heat rushed to her face. She swiftly lifted the edge of the quilt, peeking underneath to assess the damage. He still wore his trousers and button-down shirt. Relief washed over her, followed immediately by sharp embarrassment.

”Did I save you from the iceberg?” Marvin asked, a smirk playing on his lips.

”Ah!” Miranda yelped. She pulled the duvet over her head, retreating into the darkness of the bedding like a startled ostrich. ”Get out. Go!”

”Are you kicking out your heroic rescuer?” he asked. His voice sounded muffled through the layers of fabric.

”If Frank finds you in here, he’ll think something happened!” she urged. Her voice sounded tight with embarrassment.

She heard the mattress shift as he sat up. He stretched, a soft groan escaping his throat as his joints popped. ”Fine. I know when I outstayedmy welcome.”

Footsteps moved across the carpet. She heard the clink of metal against wood as he picked up the Oscar statuette from the nightstand.

As the door handle clicked open, Miranda poked her head out from under the covers. Her hair formed a tangled mess. ”Is it really a bad thing if people think something happened between us?” she grumbled, pouting slightly.

Marvin paused in the doorway. He turned back, the golden statuette resting casually against his shoulder. He flashed a slow, knowing smile making her stomach flutter. ”I suppose that depends entirely on what you want to happen next time, Miranda.”

He stepped into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind him.

Back in his own master suite, Marvin tossed the Oscar onto an armchair. He rolled his shoulders, wincing. Sleeping in formal wear while serving as a human mattress for a model left his back stiff. He stripped off the wrinkled clothes, took a fast shower, and pulled on a clean pair of jeans and a grey sweater.

Before he could close his eyes for a quick nap, his mother’s voice carried up the grand staircase.

”Marvin honey! Breakfast awaits on the table. Frank and Kris are heading to the airport soon. Come say goodbye to them!”

”Coming, Mom,” he called back, running a towel through his damp hair.

He descended the stairs and walked into the sunlit dining room. The smell of roasted coffee and toasted bread filled the space. Frank and Grant sat at the far end of the long table, discussing flight schedules to New York.

Miranda sat near the middle. She wore a simple white blouse and jeans, her hair brushed out and falling in waves over her shoulders. She nibbled on a piece of toast, staring intently at her glass of milk.

When Marvin pulled out the chair directly across from her, she glanced up. Her cheeks flared pink. She dropped her gaze back to her plate, suddenly very interested in the crust of her toast.

Marvin leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. A mischievous grin tugged at the corners of his mouth. ”Good morning, Miss Miranda. Sleep well last night? You jump, I jump?”

Miranda’s eyes widened. She nearly choked on her toast. Leaning across the table, she lowered her voice to a hurried whisper. ”How do you know that? Did I talk in my sleep?”

”Not a single word,” Marvin replied smoothly.

Mrs. Aranda placed a plate of eggs in front of him. Marvin offered a polite nod of thanks before turning his attention back to Miranda.

”But I do appreciate the enthusiastic hug. Aside from losing all feeling in my left arm, I slept surprisingly well.”

Miranda shot him a glare.

Her momentary panic vanished as her professional composure snapped back into place.

”Oh?” she replied, sitting up straighter and lifting her chin. ”Well, I had a fantastic pillow. Very supportive, very firm. Highly recommended.”

Frank paused in the middle of his conversation with Grant.

His eyes shifted from Marvin to Miranda and back again.

A suspicious frown slowly formed on his face. ”Miranda,” he said carefully, ”did something happen between you and Marvin?”

”What?” Miranda replied instantly.

She blinked her wide, innocent eyes at him. ”No. Of course not. We were just discussing a movie.”

Frank continued staring at her for several seconds.

Then he grunted.

The look on his face made it clear he didn’t believe a single word.

Still, he returned to his coffee, deciding that whatever had happened was probably something he didn’t want explained at the breakfast table.

..

.

After the front door closed behind Frank, Kris, and Miranda, leaving the house to its usual quiet routine, Marvin settled back into his chair.

He reached for the stack of morning newspapers resting near the center fruit bowl.

The aftermath of the 71st Academy Awards dominated the front pages. The entertainment press spent the night digesting the results, and the morning editions blazed with post-Oscar commentary. The narrative shifted from celebration to sharp, pointed critique.

The media focused heavily on the controversial victories of *Shakespeare in Love*, specifically its triumph over the cinematic heavyweights *Saving Private Ryan* and *The Sixth Sense*.

Marvin unfolded the *Los Angeles Times*. The entertainment section featured a scathing editorial by their lead critic.

*”How does the light, uninspired romantic comedy of *Shakespeare in Love* outmatch the masterful, defining storytelling of *The Sixth Sense*? Or the visceral reality of *Saving Private Ryan*? The Academy lost its compass. M. Night Shyamalan directed a cultural phenomenon. Marvin Meyers composed a groundbreaking score ignored entirely by the music branch. This result reeks of backroom studio politics rather than artistic merit.”*

Marvin turned to the *New York Times*. They echoed the sentiment, focusing on the acting categories.

*”Mediocrity triumphed over brilliance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion last night. While Gwyneth Paltrow acts as a capable actress, handing her the Best Actress statuette over Toni Collette’s devastating performance in *The Sixth Sense* or Cate Blanchett’s towering turn in *Elizabeth* forms perhaps the most undeserved win in recent memory.

Furthermore, Marvin Meyers’s contributions to *The Sixth Sense* proved undeniable. While he rightfully claimed Best Supporting Actor, the film itself suffered overshadowing only by the Academy’s tired love affair with British period costumes.”*

*”Most undeserved Best Actress win in years,”*

Marvin couldn’t suppress a satisfied laugh. He took a sip of his orange juice. It felt refreshing to see the industry journalists rally behind his work and Spielberg’s work, even if it arrived in the form of criticism for Miramax. Especially if it did.

He skimmed the *Washington Post*. The backlash extended deeply into the Best Picture race. The upset already earned the label of a historic mistake.

*”Historical romance holds its merits,”* the Post columnist wrote, *”but comparing the frothy entertainment of *Shakespeare in Love* to a generational masterpiece like *Saving Private Ryan* serves as a disservice to cinema. They do not play the same sport. Harvey Weinstein proved an aggressive marketing campaign can effectively buy the highest honor in Hollywood. The golden statue lost some of its luster today.”*

He picked up *The Hollywood Reporter*, where the assault continued against the acting categories.

*”Eight Minutes of Screen Time vs. A Lifetime of Trauma,”* the feature article scoffed.

*”We need to address the absurdity of the acting categories. Gwyneth Paltrow taking home Best Actress for crying in an Elizabethan gown over truly transformative performances stands as the most glaringly undeserved win in modern Oscar history. And Judi Dench securing Best Supporting Actress for exactly eight minutes of screen time? It presents an insult to the craft. The Academy proved so utterly blinded by the Miramax party circuit and aggressive lobbying tactics they entirely missed the actual art right in front of them. Marvin and Spielberg didn’t lose because their films fell inferior; they lost because they refused to play a dirty, sycophantic game.”

Even the mainstream news outlets joined the slaughter. *Entertainment Weekly*’s massive two-page spread didn’t pull any punches regarding the cultural impact.

*”The Academy is Out of Touch with the Audience.”*

*”Let’s look at the reality of the box office and cultural resonance. *Saving Private Ryan* changed the way we view history. *The Sixth Sense* became an absolute global phenomenon, dictating water-cooler conversations for months, driven entirely by a script and a musical score that rewired the audience’s brains. *Shakespeare in Love* is a movie people will forget by next Tuesday. The voters have officially isolated themselves in an ivory tower, rewarding who threw the most lavish Beverly Hills dinners rather than who actually moved the needle of cinema.”

Marvin flipped through the glossy pages of Newsweek. The national weekly magazine had dedicated its entire culture section to the fallout, focusing on the acting categories and the changing nature of Hollywood politics.

”The Weinstein Effect: How to Bully Your Way to an Oscar,” the bold text read.

”There is a bitter taste lingering in Hollywood’s mouth this morning. Gwyneth Paltrow’s tearful, breathless acceptance speech for Best Actress felt less like a triumph of acting and more like the culmination of a hostage situation orchestrated by Miramax PR. She defeated Cate Blanchett’s towering ’Elizabeth’, Fernanda Montenegro’s heartbreaking ’Central Station’ and Toni Collette’s tearful performance not through screen presence, but through brute-force campaigning. The Academy has allowed itself to be manipulated by studio politics, leaving genuine, groundbreaking artists—from Spielberg’s gritty realism to Marvin’s haunting, revolutionary musical architecture—out in the cold.”

Even the international press was piling on. He unfolded a copy of the British broadsheet, The Guardian. Despite Shakespeare in Love being a deeply British production, the UK critics were completely disillusioned by the blatant commercialism of the victory.

”A Very Hollywood Hijacking,” the foreign correspondent wrote.
