Marvin noticed immediately.

He tapped the edge of her eyes.

”I can see that,” he said with an approving smile. ”Those notes aren’t for show.”

Lindsay’s grin widened. ”I’ve been doing my homework.”

”I know.” He gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. ”And it shows.”

For a brief moment, her proud smile softened. Out of all the compliments she could receive on a film set, his was the one she valued over everything and everyone.

He guided her alongside him as they walked past the massive grip trucks, Caravans, Vanity Vans, Camper Vans and tangled lighting rigs toward the main set. Lindsay walked a little taller beside him, happily chattering about her scenes, completely unbothered by the organized chaos of the shooting around them.

He greeted the crew with easy confidence. There wasn’t a trace of the swagger people expected from a teenager fresh off an Oscar. Instead, he carried himself like someone who had spent years on film sets.. a producer dropping by to see how his investment was coming along.

”Hello, everyone,” Marvin called out.

”Hello, Marvin!” the key grip answered, tipping his hat.

”Finally, you are here!” the cinematographer added, adjusting a lens.

”Hi, Marvin. Long time no see,” the directors assistant smiled, handing him a revised shooting schedule.

The crew welcomed him warmly. Beyond his acting talent, they knew exactly who paid their salaries. Marvin held a significant financial stake in the film. Nearly half the production budget came from the Meyers family.

Grant Meyers served as the official figurehead on the legal documents, signing the checks to satisfy the judges and lawyers, but everyone above the line understood the capital belonged to the boy. The remaining budget split between Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax and Tom Cruise’s production banner.

Marvin set his script on an empty canvas director’s chair before making his way toward Nicole Kidman.

She was standing beside the monitor village in Grace’s modest, high-collared 1940s costume. Even dressed in deliberately understated clothing, she carried the effortless elegance that had made her one of Hollywood’s most admired actresses, looking gorgeous. The moment she noticed him approaching, a warm smile spread across her face.

”Marvin,” she greeted, shaking his hand. ”It’s good to see you.”

”It’s good to be back,” he replied with an easy smile. ”So... how’s everyone holding up? Has shooting on this island started driving people a little mad yet?”

Nicole laughed softly. ”Not quite. Ask us again in another week.”

”I’ll take that as a warning.”

She folded her arms comfortably.

”Honestly, it’s going very well. Alejandro knows exactly what he wants, which keeps all of us on our toes.” She glanced down next to Marvin at Lindsay. A proud smile touched Nicole’s face. ”And your young leading lady has been quite remarkable.”

Marvin followed her gaze.

”Oh?”

Nicole nodded. ”She surprised me, if I’m honest. The emotional weight of this film isn’t easy, especially for someone her age, but she’s embraced it completely.” She smiled with genuine admiration. ”She listens, she asks questions, she takes direction beautifully, and she keeps finding little moments in the scenes that catch me off guard. That’s a lovely quality for an actor to have.”

Lindsay caught the conversation and attempted to maintain a neutral expression.

She failed spectacularly.

The corners of her mouth curled into a grin she couldn’t suppress, and she instinctively hugged his arm little tighter.

Hearing compliments from friends always felt good.

She craved validation from veteran actors, and earning Nicole Kidman’s respect formed a nice victory.

Marvin noticed immediately and couldn’t help smiling.

”I had a feeling she’d rise to the occasion,” he said. ”She works harder than most people realize.”

Nicole nodded in agreement.

”It shows.”

Marvin shrugged casually, slipping his hands into his pockets. ”It seems like I am the only one falling behind the curve. Well, I will catch up quickly enough.”

True to his word, Marvin threw himself into the role the very next morning.

He played Nicholas Stewart, Nicole’s son and Lindsay’s younger brother. Nicholas was a frail, light-sensitive boy trapped inside a house haunted by mysteries he couldn’t understand. It demanded fear, vulnerability, and quiet desperation—emotions that couldn’t have been further from Marvin’s true nature. Even so, the moment the cameras rolled, he buried his natural confidence beneath compelling layers of uncertainty and dread.

Although the story centered on Nicole’s slow psychological unraveling, many of its most heartfelt moments belonged to Marvin and Lindsay. Together, they gave the family dynamic a warmth that made the horror all the more unsettling.

Nicole, meanwhile, was excellent. The glamorous Hollywood star faded the moment the cameras started rolling. In her place stood a weary, fiercely protective mother struggling to hold her family together as her world slowly unraveled. Her performance carried a quiet emotional weight that grounded the film, making even the smallest moments feel believable.

---

The sprawling soundstage, built inside an old warehouse on the island, disappeared into carefully crafted darkness.

Artificial fog drifted between the antique oak furniture, curling across the floor of the meticulously built Victorian bedroom. Every detail had been designed to recreate the isolated Jersey mansion of 1945. The air conditioning ran constantly, filling the stage with a genuine chill that seeped into clothes and skin alike. It gave the room the cold, lifeless feeling the scene demanded.

Behind a row of velvet-covered monitors, director Alejandro Amenábar adjusted his headset without taking his eyes off the screens. No one spoke above a whisper. Crew members moved carefully across the stage, avoiding even the smallest unnecessary noise. After spending the last hour guiding the cast into the right emotional state, nobody wanted to be the one who shattered it.

”Quiet on set!” the first assistant director called, raising a hand. ”Rolling... and... Action!”

The scene marked the emotional and psychological climax of the film.

The wardrobe doors flew open.

Nicole’s breathing came in short, frantic bursts as she tore through the hanging clothes. The lantern in her hand swung wildly, throwing restless shadows across the back of the old wooden wardrobe.

Curled into the darkest corner sat Marvin and Lindsay.

Alejandro instinctively leaned closer to the monitor.

Marvin had folded himself into the smallest shape he could manage, knees pressed tightly against his chest. Every ounce of confidence had vanished. His face was pale, his eyes wide with the kind of terror no child should ever know. His breathing turned shallow and uneven as though he were fighting to keep from breaking down. One trembling hand clung desperately to Lindsay’s wool cardigan, gripping it so tightly his knuckles had gone white.

”Mummy...” Lindsay whispered. Her voice quivered, barely holding together. ”They’re here... the intruders... they’re in the house.”

”Shh... shh... it’s all right.” Nicole dropped to her knees, her own breath catching in her throat. Tears threatened to spill as she reached into the wardrobe, desperate to gather both children into her arms. ”I’m here. I’m here.”

For the briefest moment, Marvin resisted.

It wasn’t in the script.

His body instinctively recoiled from Nicole’s outstretched arms, as though Nicholas had become so consumed by fear that even his own mother couldn’t immediately reach him. The hesitation lasted barely a second, but it made the moment feel painfully real.

When Nicole finally pulled him from the wardrobe, he collapsed into her embrace. His face disappeared against her shoulder as a broken sob escaped his lips.

”I don’t want to see them,” Marvin cried, his voice muffled by the heavy fabric of her dress. It cracked on the last word. ”Make them go away, Mummy... please... make them go away.”

The plea landed like a punch.

Several crew members behind the cameras felt goosebumps rise along their arms. Marvin wasn’t simply crying. His entire body shook with fear, small, uncontrollable tremors running through him as though he truly believed something horrifying stood just beyond the bedroom door.

Nicole wrapped both children in her arms, holding them so tightly it seemed she could shield them from the impossible through sheer force of will alone. Her eyes darted across the dim room, searching every shadow.

”I won’t let them take you,” she whispered, her voice trembling. ”I won’t.”

The Steadicam drifted around them, slowly circling the family huddled together on the wooden floor.

Then...

The bedroom door creaked open by itself.

No one moved.

Beyond the doorway sat the intruders around an old séance table. At its center was the blind medium, her clouded eyes staring into nothing. Opposite her sat the living family who believed this house belonged to them, their faces pale with fear.

”Are there spirits in this room?” the old woman asked, her raspy voice cutting through the silence.

Lindsay suddenly pulled away from Nicole.

”We’re not spirits!” she shouted, every word filled with frightened defiance. Her voice echoed with the defiant, desperate anger of a child not understanding the rules of the terrifying game she was trapped in.

”Anne!” Nicole cried, grabbing her daughter’s arm. ”Stop!”

The medium paid no attention.

”Why are you in this house?”

Marvin clamped both hands over his ears and squeezed his eyes shut.

”Stop!” he screamed. ”Please... make the voices stop! It hurts! Mummy... make them stop!”

Tears streamed freely down his face. His breathing became ragged, each breath shorter than the last, as though panic itself had stolen the air from his lungs. Anne fought what she saw. Grace refused to believe it, but Nicholas simply crushed under the weight of it.

His portrayal of profound, sickening confusion formed the emotional anchor of the scene.

”Leave my children alone!” Nicole screamed. Her voice tore through the soundstage, carrying a grief so profound it felt invasive to watch.

She sprang to her feet, pulling both children behind skirt, facing the seance table with a terrifying fury as if her own body could stand between them and whatever haunted the room.

”Get out of my house!” she shouted. ”Get out!”

The medium slowly lifted her head.

Though her eyes were blind, they seemed fixed directly on Nicole.

”They are the ones who are dead,” she said quietly.

”The mother...

...and the two children.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Only the faint crackle of the prop candles disturbed it.

The camera slowly pushed toward Nicole, tightening until her face filled the frame. Every emotion played across it in painful succession. Confusion. Disbelief. Then understanding.

The truth found her.

The memories she had buried—the pillow, the suffocating silence, the gunshot that followed—came crashing back all at once.

Her lips parted, but no sound came.

The strength drained from her legs.

She collapsed onto the floor, instinctively pulling Marvin and Lindsay against her as though she could still protect them from the truth.

”No...” Nicole whispered.

The word barely escaped before it shattered into sobs.

”No... no... no...”

”We’re not dead!” Lindsay cried, tears spilling freely down her cheeks. The last of Anne’s courage finally gave way. She clutched at her mother’s sleeve with desperate hands.

”Tell them, Mummy!” she pleaded. ”Tell them we’re not dead!”

Then came Nicholas.

He didn’t shout.

He didn’t cry.

He simply looked up at his mother.

His eyes glistened with tears, still searching for the answer only she could give. There was no anger in them—only innocent trust.

”We’re not dead... are we, Mummy?” Marvin asked quietly.

His voice was so small it barely carried across the room.

With trembling fingers, he reached up and gently touched Nicole’s tear-stained cheek.

”You said the Lord would protect us.” His voice quivered. ”We’re just sick... aren’t we? We’re just sick.”

Nicole broke.

A raw, heartbreaking cry tore from somewhere deep inside her as she pulled both children into her arms, holding them with every ounce of strength she had left. She buried her face against Marvin’s hair, unable to look at either of them.

”We’re not dead,” she sobbed, rocking them back and forth.

”We’re not dead...

We’re not dead...”

The words became less a denial than a prayer she desperately wanted to believe.

The camera slowly drifted backward, leaving the family huddled together on the bedroom floor.

The lighting team gradually dimmed the lights. Darkness crept around them, swallowing more and more of the room until they seemed almost lost within it. Across the séance table, the living family watched in stunned silence, unable to tear their eyes away.

Alejandro let the moment linger.

Five seconds.

Then eight.

Then ten.

No music.

Only the sound of three people crying.

”And... Cut!”

His voice echoed through the soundstage, finally breaking the spell.

No one moved.

The grips left the lights untouched.

The boom operator still held the microphone in place.

Even the script supervisor forgot to lower her pen.

For several long seconds, the entire crew simply sat there, absorbing what they had just witnessed before reality slowly returned to the room.
