They filled the waiting rooms like ghosts of alternate futures: all hoping, all starving, all one lucky break away from escaping the soul-crushing cycle of waitressing and rejection.

Girls with bigger résumés.

Girls with better connections—uncles in agencies, ex-boyfriends who knew producers, fathers who once played golf with studio execs.

Girls with more recognizable names, even if those names only meant a handful of national commercials or a recurring role on a canceled teen drama.

And worst of all, the ones who were ready to cross any line. The ones who understood the real currency in this town wasn’t just talent or training—it was willingness. They’d sleep with anyone who might give them a shot: the leering casting director who ”just wanted to see chemistry,” the faded producer who promised to ”put in a good word” after hours in his hillside mansion, the assistant who could get them alone with the real decision-maker if they played along.

This was the dark side of Hollywood, the part they never showed in the glossy behind-the-scenes documentaries or the triumphant Oscar speeches. It was the unspoken rule that ambition had an expiration date, and youth was the only bargaining chip most of these newcomers had. Some arrived with dreams of craft and art. Most left with new nightmares, whispered stories of locked hotel suites, ”private auditions” that required no script, and the sickening realization that saying no often meant disappearing from the callback list forever or even getting blacklisted.

Every audition reminded her that there were talented girls who looked almost exactly like her. Same polished headshots, same desperate hunger in their eyes. They crowded the sterile hallways like cattle at market, all scented with the same cheap perfume and quiet panic.

Most of the jobs Anne actually landed barely counted for anything. A single throwaway line here. A blurry background role there. Scenes that ended up sliced out in the editing room, her face never even making the final cut. Invisible labor for invisible pay.

For the first time in her life, working hard didn’t seem to guarantee a goddamn thing.

She couldn’t understand why other girls—seemingly less skilled, less beautiful, less dedicated—kept securing the better opportunities. The callbacks. The screen tests. The actual lines with actual screen time. It gnawed at her like rot.

Her mother had always been brutally honest about the math of Hollywood. Raw talent was only one-third of the equation. Connections were the real key. And the final, ugliest third? Who you fucked, and how many powerful men you let fuck you.

One evening, after another string of rejections, Kate sat her daughter down in the dimly lit kitchen of their modest apartment.

The kitchen smelled like burnt coffee and the ghost of a thousand cigarettes smoked in better years. Anne sat hunched over the laminate table in her brother’s old Red Sox sweatshirt, the one she’d pulled on after scrubbing her audition makeup off with a washcloth that still smelled like mildew. She was fifteen at that time. She’d just lost another part—some teen soap pilot that had felt like her big break until it wasn’t.

Kate stood at the sink, staring at the dark street through the window above the faucet. She’d been beautiful once, or close enough to get hurt by it. Years of understudy roles and regional theater had carved something hard into her face. When she turned around, she held a glass of Chardonnay that had gone warm in her hand.

”You need to stop crying over fairness, Annie,” Kate said. Her voice wasn’t angry. It was worse than angry—it was clinical, the way a doctor tells you the tumor’s malignant. ”Hollywood isn’t a meritocracy. It’s math. Raw talent is maybe thirty percent. Connections are another thirty. And the rest?” She set the glass down. ”It’s who you spread your legs for, and how many powerful men you let crawl between them.”

Anne jerked back like she’d been slapped. Her elbow caught her mug, sent tea sloshing across the table. ”Jesus, Mom. What the hell?”

Kate didn’t flinch. She didn’t even reach for a paper towel. ”I’m not reading you bedtime stories anymore. If you’re serious about this—not community theater, not high school musicals, but *this*—you have to stop pretending that being good at crying on cue is going to get you a studio picture. Talent gets you in the waiting room. But the right guy—a producer, a director, someone with greenlight power—he gets you the part. He puts you in front of the people who matter. He buries your mistakes in the editing bay.”

Anne’s throat felt tight, that familiar pre-audition panic rising in her chest. ”So that’s it? You want me to be some... some high-class escort? A whore?”

Kate laughed then, but it was hollow, a sound like gravel in a tin can. ”Call it whatever helps you sleep, baby. But yes. That’s exactly what it is. And here’s the thing—they don’t tell you in drama club—it *works*.”

She leaned against the counter, crossing her arms. The kitchen light caught the gray threading through her hair. ”You think Claire Danes got *Romeo + Juliet* because she gave the best reading? You think those girls on the posters at Tower Records got there by being wholesome? No. But if you play it right, if you’re smart about it, you get money you can’t spend in a lifetime. The world knows your name. You get power that actually means something—senators calling your publicist, politicians begging for photo ops. You live above the law, Annie. A-listers don’t do county jail for DUIs or possession or even murder. They don’t even get booked. Doors open that stay welded shut for everyone else. Private jets on the tarmac. Secrets buried by lawyers who bill more per hour than most people make in a month. That’s the real currency in this town. Not your Stanislavski technique.”

Anne stared at the tea stain spreading across the table. Her stomach rolled. ”How can you even say this to me? I’m your daughter.”

Kate’s gaze drifted back to the window, to the darkness outside that seemed to press against the glass. When she spoke, her voice had gone soft, almost dreamy, but poisoned with old regret. ”Because I wanted it too. When I was sixteen, seventeen, standing in line at open calls in New York, I wanted the A-list. I wanted my face on that screen. But the second I got into those rooms—the real rooms, not the cattle calls—I saw the arithmetic clear as day. I wasn’t talented enough to transcend the game, and I sure as hell wasn’t beautiful enough to make them rewrite the rules for me to reach that level on my own even after giving everything up. So I settled. I married your father. He’s a good man. He’s safe. But you...”

She pushed off from the counter and crossed the small kitchen in three steps. Her fingers touched Anne’s jaw, tilting her face up. It should have been tender. It felt like appraisal, like a buyer checking livestock teeth. ”You have both, Annie. The face and the gift. I’m telling you this. Not just because I want you to succeed, but because I love you too much to watch you get destroyed the way I saw so many others destroyed.”

Her hand dropped. She pulled out the chair and sat, leaning close enough that Anne could smell the wine on her breath, and something else—bitterness, maybe, or memory. ”I watched girls get passed around like canapés at those Canyon parties in the eighties. Bright, shiny things who thought a ’private meeting’ at the Chateau would launch their careers. Some woke up with three-picture deals. Most woke up with nothing but bruises and a black mark next to their name that followed them forever. Say no to the wrong guy? Ask for too much? You’re done. Unhireable. Hollywood’s full of ghouls in human skin, Annie. Fake managers who take twenty percent of your soul. Producers who promise you a screen test that ends with you on your knees in a hotel suite while they film it for leverage, for blackmail, for their own private collection.”

”Stop,” Anne whispered. Her eyes burned. ”Please, just stop. You’re talking about this like it’s... like it’s just business.”

”It *is* business,” Kate snapped, the softness cracking open to show the steel beneath. ”Everything in this town is transactional. You want to try it your way? Fine. Rely on your purity, your integrity, your precious talent. Maybe you’ll beat the odds. But luck is a lottery ticket with terrible odds, and the clock doesn’t pause for anyone. Your looks are leverage right now. Currency. In five years? Ten? You age out of the ’fresh young thing’ slot, and they replace you with the next virgin off the Greyhound. If you don’t go this route you’d waste the next two decades grinding through bit parts, slowly aging out of the ”young and fuckable” category before anyone even noticed her name.

Even if audiences finally started recognizing her face, she’d still need freakish, undeniable talent to survive without compromising. Most girls didn’t have that. I’ve watched it happen. Girls who held out too long, who believed the lie—ended up waiting tables at Canter’s until they were thirty, then doing softcore for cable just to keep the lights on. Or worse. They got hooked on the pills the ’right guy’ gave them to ’relax’ before an audition. Then they disappeared. Overdoses in Valley motels.

’Accidents’ on Mulholland. Suicides that got buried in the back pages while the studios paid off the trades to look the other way.”

Kate reached across the table and grabbed Anne’s hand, squeezing hard enough to hurt. Her eyes were fierce, desperate, terrible in their honesty. ”I can only give you the map, Annie. You’re the one who has to drive the terrain. If you do this—and I’m not saying you have to, but if you do—you do it smart. You find a kingmaker, not a bottom-feeder. Someone who can actually deliver, not some parasite who just wants to use you up. You protect yourself. You get it in writing when you can. And you never, ever forget this: they despise the girls who give it away for free. They respect the transaction. They fetishize the chase, but they *respect* the price tag.”

The refrigerator hummed in the silence that followed, loud as a generator. Anne pulled her hand away, slowly, her fingers trembling. Her heart hammered against her ribs—a sick, toxic cocktail of disgust and fear and something worse, something that felt like the first crack in a wall she’d built to keep herself whole.

Kate wasn’t a monster. She was a survivor who’d traded her own dreams for a duplex in Burbank and a husband who came home at six every night. She was handing over the ugliest survival manual imaginable, bound in leather made from the skin of girls who hadn’t made it.

But Anne couldn’t cross that line. Not yet. Not while she still believed, desperately, stupidly, that talent meant something.

So for the next three months, she and her family scraped together every legitimate favor they had. Anne smiled until her face ached at industry mixers, ignoring the hands that lingered too long on her waist, the eyes that undressed her while asking about her ”career goals,” the wet, predatory smiles of men who promised her the world while silently inventorying her body.

She lost the roles anyway. Watched them go to girls who understood math, who’d learned early that Hollywood wasn’t a stage—it was a marketplace. Girls backed by the invisible machinery of studio favors and private arrangements, the ancient economy of flesh and power that kept the industry spinning on its rotten axis.

And with every phone call—*”They went in a different direction”*—with every rejection slip, Kate’s words echoed louder in Anne’s head, chipping away at the girl who still believed that being good was enough to save her.

She lost the role to Scarlett Johansson.

She lost because Scarlett had the stronger backing. The insurmountable connections. Because Marvin Meyers—the wonder boy who had just swept the Oscars—was quietly pulling strings behind the scenes, manipulating the board, the producers, the entire machinery of the deal.

’Marvin Meyers.’ The name alone made her stomach twist with pure hatred now. That smug, talented, handsome face. The boy who could fuck his way through half the girls in the city and still be celebrated as a genius while they were quietly discarded.

Marvin Meyers was another name she now hated.

She sat in the cheap plastic chair, script pages trembling in her hands. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like dying insects. The clock on the wall ticked louder with every second, a cruel countdown past 12 afternoon. Time was running out—her youth, her window, her dignity.
