”Can you pay attention? I need you to call my stylist. I need something that says ’I’m taken but still totally available.’”

Kim abandoned her dangerous thoughts and pulled out her PalmPilot. ”Of course, Paris,”

she said smoothly. ”Right away.”

The car pulled away, kicking up gravel.

Watching them go, he couldn’t help but note how fast Kim moved despite wearing impractical stilettos. Perhaps her plastic curves helped her maintain a low center of gravity.

Marvin had noticed Kim’s prying eyes and brief flash of ambition. He chose not to acknowledge it. From the flashes of future pop culture history he retained, he knew exactly who Kim Kardashian would become.

She was clever, possessing an understanding of media manipulation that rivaled studio heads just more modern. In contrast to Paris’s chaotic lovely personality, Kim operated with colder, calculated logic. She would be highly useful in the long run. Paris was a storm; Kim was an architect.

Both of them, he suspected, were going to complicate his life considerably.

”Alright, everyone is reset! Let’s get back to work!” John called out, echoing through the set.

Marvin took a breath, centered himself, and stepped back into character.

During a short pause while the camera crew reset lenses and checked their marks, Robert De Niro wandered over with his script tucked beneath one arm. He glanced toward the path Paris had disappeared through before lowering his voice.

”So...” he said, nudging Marvin lightly with the rolled-up script. ”You and the Hilton girl.”

Marvin looked at him innocently. ”What about us?”

De Niro gave him a look that practically said don’t insult my intelligence. ”Come on.” He nodded toward the path. ”I’ve been around this business too long.”

A faint grin creased his face. ”People don’t look at each other like that because they’re discussing literature.”

Marvin couldn’t help smiling. ”We met at a Fox charity auction,” he replied evenly. ”We’re friends. She likes books, movies... we get along.”

”Uh-huh.”

De Niro let the silence hang for a second before chuckling.

”So that’s the story we’re goin’ with?”

Marvin casually adjusted the cuff of his oversized sweater. ”I have no idea what you’re talking about, Bob.”

Robert watched him for another moment, waiting for even the slightest crack in the performance.

Nothing. Not a grin. Not a twitch. Not even a guilty glance.

Finally, he laughed under his breath and gave a small shake of his head.

”Kid...”

He tapped Marvin once on the shoulder with the script.

”You’ve got the best poker face I’ve seen in this town.”

As Robert and Marvin walked back toward their marks, Bob found himself smiling.

’Smart kid,’ he thought.

Most young actors can’t wait to tell somebody. This one knows when to keep his mouth shut. In Hollywood, that was a rarer talent than acting.

Hollywood was a place full of access to every kind of vice and entertainment beyond the reach of normal society. If you wanted the veterans to invite you into the inner circles, a tight mouth was the first requirement. The dark underbelly of the clubs, the private suites, cult-like groups, secret associations, and the executive parties required discretion. The rest was simply a matter of whether you got along with the right power players.

Maintaining an air of mystery wasn’t just a PR tactic; it was a survival mechanism in a town that loved to destroy its idols. It was all about control of the narrative.

During his decades in Hollywood, Robert had learned one lesson that never changed.

Talent got you through the front door.

Discretion kept you in the room.

This was an industry built as much on private conversations as public premieres. The biggest deals, the strongest alliances, and the most influential friendships were rarely made under bright lights. People remembered who talked too much just as surely as they remembered who delivered on camera.

Marvin’s refusal to gossip or boast didn’t go unnoticed.

For a thirteen-year-old, he possessed an unusual instinct for when to speak—and, more importantly, when not to.

If he kept that discipline as he grew older, Robert suspected the kid would still be standing long after louder stars had burned themselves out.

De Niro gave Marvin an approving smile and clapped him lightly on the shoulder with the folded script.

”Good,” he said. ”Keep it that way.”

Marvin glanced over.

”In this town, everybody loves to hear themselves talk.” Robert shrugged. ”The smart ones listen.”

He stopped and stood in his position, then looked over his shoulder. ”And another thing...”

Marvin raised an eyebrow.

”Keep doin’ the work.” Robert pointed toward the camera. ”That’s what they’ll remember.”

Marvin nodded once. ”I plan to.”

De Niro smiled to himself.

”Yeah...”

”I believe you.”

”Camera A is speeding!” the assistant director yelled.

Marvin let the warmth drain from his face, his spine curving as he stepped back into the shadows of the staircase, ready to become the monster once again.

---

The next scene called for the introduction of Catherine, the female psychiatrist assigned by the state to evaluate Markle after his mother’s tragic death in the bathtub.

In the original draft of the script, the scene played out like a standard Hollywood melodrama. The child was supposed to throw herself into Catherine’s arms, crying tears of joy and relief upon seeing a familiar, friendly face from the city.

Marvin had slashed and changed the whole scene.

It was a detail that would have become a glaring point of criticism for the movie. After experiencing a string of terrifying, isolated events in the upstate house with a father whose mental state was rapidly deteriorating, it was unrealistic for a traumatized child to behave so joyfully. A child drowning in that kind of darkness did not run toward strangers with open arms; they retreated inward.

So, Marvin fixed the blocking and the emotional arc.

In his script, when Markle sees Catherine standing on the porch, his character first registers a flicker of genuine excitement—the instinctual relief of seeing an adult who might save him. But that hope is suppressed a second later, replaced by the cold, indifferent paranoia that the house demands. He approaches her slowly, offering a stiff, guarded hug that feels more like a concession than an embrace.

The scene demanded almost no movement.

The moment required a performance built entirely on micro-expressions. The subtle spark of hope, the sudden suppression of that hope, and the chilling, calculated indifference that followed all had to be conveyed through Marvin’s eyes in the span of five seconds, before he even spoke his first line.

Robert De Niro stood beside John Polson near the monitor village, a paper cup of coffee warming his hands as the crew finished laying marks on the porch.

”If the kid pulls this off,” Robert said quietly, never taking his eyes off Marvin, ”we’ve gotta stop calling him a prodigy.”

John glanced over with a faint smile. ”We’re way past that, Bob.”

De Niro looked at him.

John nodded toward the set. ”You spent half of yesterday telling me how unsettling he was.”

Robert let out a quiet grunt. ”I did.”

”The dining room scene,” John continued. ”He had you reacting to him. That’s not something you see every day.”

Robert took a slow sip of his coffee before lowering the cup. ”...Yeah.”

A reluctant smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. ”Can’t argue with that.”

He looked back toward Marvin. ”I keep forgetting how old he is.”

”That’s because,” John replied, ”the camera forgets too.”

For a moment, neither man spoke. The crew made final adjustments to the lighting.

John folded his arms. ”You know, this reminds me of something one critic wrote after *The Sixth Sense*?”

Robert shook his head.

John recited it from memory. *”Marvin’s eyes are a cinematic miracle. People like to say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but I’ve never seen an actor—of any age—communicate such layered emotion with so little movement. He can tell an entire story before he ever speaks.”

Robert let out a low whistle. ”That’s one hell of a compliment.”

John smiled toward the monitor. ”And I think we’re about to watch exactly what that critic was talking about.”

Robert stared at Marvin for another long moment before giving a slow nod. ”...Yeah.”

He took one last drink of coffee. ”I’ve worked with a lot of great actors.”

His eyes never left the boy standing on the porch. ”But I’ve never seen anybody who could do more with a pair of eyes.”

Across the set, Marvin sat in a canvas chair, his eyes closed, sinking back into the suffocating headspace of Markle. He let the Incubus aura recede, allowing the fragile, broken human facade to take total control. He opened his eyes. The blue irises were dull and vacant. He raised a thumb to the first assistant director.

”Let’s start,” Marvin said softly. ”I have it.”

”Rolling!” the AD called out. ”Action!”

In the subsequent performance, Marvin delivered a flawless masterclass in storytelling. When the actress playing Catherine stepped onto the porch, Marvin’s face twitched. His eyes widened just a fraction of an inch—a silent cry for help. It was a perfect flash of a terrified child.

Then, the invisible monster in his head took control. The light behind his eyes died instantly.

His face smoothed out into a chilling mask of apathy. He walked forward, his shoulders stiff, and wrapped his arms around Catherine’s waist in a hug that felt devoid of warmth. It was the manifestation of a psychological prison.

”Cut!” John called, never taking his eyes off the monitor.

For a moment, nobody moved.

John replayed the take in silence, watching Marvin’s eyes again. When it ended, a slow smile spread across his face.

He looked up and gave the crew another emphatic thumbs-up of the day.

”That’s it,” he said. ”We got it.”

A ripple of relieved applause swept across the set.

Robert De Niro joined in, clapping with genuine admiration.

”Beautiful,” he said, nodding toward Marvin. ”That’s exactly how you do an internal transition.”

He shook his head with an appreciative grin.

”No tricks. No big gestures.”

He tapped his own temple. ”It all happened right here.”

The crew applauded even louder.

They had spent the entire take standing in complete silence, afraid even the smallest sound might break the spell. Watching the playback confirmed what many of them had already felt while the camera was rolling.

They had just witnessed something special again.

.

The following morning, the production schedule shifted to the flashback sequences that established David Callaway’s life before the upstate move. Two more actors arrived on set to play the roles of the tragic victim, Elizabeth, and her young niece, Anna.

First to arrive from the makeup trailer was Elisabeth Shue, cast perfectly as the doomed wife.

The 35-year-old actress, a Harvard graduate, carried a natural, intelligent grace that elevated the roles she chose. She was fresh off shooting Paul Verhoeven’s upcoming sci-fi thriller, *Hollow Man*, where she played a brilliant researcher.

Here on the set of *Hide and Seek*, with her blonde hair pulled back and her brown eyes soft and expressive, she projected a mature, stabilizing beauty meant to basis the early scenes of the film before her character’s grisly demise in the bathtub.

But Marvin’s attention was drawn to the other Elizabeth arriving on set.

Elizabeth Olsen.

The young girl, possessing a striking, natural resemblance to Elisabeth Shue, had been cast to play the role of the niece, Anna. At ten years old Liz, the last traces of childhood baby fat were gradually disappearing from her cheeks, revealing the delicate, symmetrical bone structure that would eventually define her as a global star a decade later.

”Lizzie?” Marvin called out, stepping away from the camera rig. He offered a warm, genuine smile, letting a fraction of the Incubus charm bleed through to put her at ease on the chaotic set. ”Wow, look at you. You are getting more beautiful every time I see you.”

The compliment, delivered with the smooth, unwavering confidence of a boy three years her senior, made the young girl blush furiously. She giggled, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.

”Marvin!” Elizabeth said happily, her initial nervousness evaporating. She ran forward and gave him a tight, enthusiastic hug around his waist. ”I am so glad you still remember me from the premier!”

Marvin returned the hug without hesitation. He patted her back lightly. ’Western girls really do develop early,’ he mused silently. ’Well, except for Lindsay, who is going to be a late bloomer.’

After stepping back, Marvin looked down at the young girl, his tone easy but attentive.

”I wasn’t expecting to see you here,” he said. ”Did the casting department finally wear your family down? I thought your mom was determined to keep you away from this place.”
