”Indirect, but obvious,” Gregg said. ”Opinion pieces appear in major newspapers that share editorial board members with Shueisha’s publishing group. Television panel discussions feature cultural commentators who hold historical financial ties to the established manga monopolies. They build a narrative. They claim Shōnen Blaze corrupts the format. They say we use a trusted brand name to deliver seinen content aimed at adults, and smuggle it to children.”

”That narrative is accurate,” Marvin said.

A heavy silence fell over the Tokyo end of the call.

”I know it is accurate,” Marvin continued, his voice steady. ”The content is mature. That formed the third biggest point of founding the magazine. The readers buying our issues wanted stories the existing publishers refused to provide. But Shueisha argues we deceive parents—that kernel of truth makes their attack effective.”

”So how do we counter it?” Gregg asked.

”We don’t counter it. We use it,” Marvin said. He took a sip of milk and set the glass down with a click. ”Tanaka-san, let us move to the second part of your report.”

Tanaka cleared his throat. The anxiety of a corporate man who managed a risky transition bled into his words. ”The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2047 retirement announcement. We published the notice in the final pages of last week’s issue, as you instructed. The reader response is heavy.”

”Over seven thousand postcards and letters were delivered to the Tokyo office,” Marvin said. He read the figure from a digest Amy slid across the desk. ”How many protest the retirement?”

”Eighty-three percent,” Tanaka reported. ”The remaining seventeen percent express concern about the graphic nature of the content itself.”

”Seventeen percent agree with the government criticism,” Marvin noted. ”The passionate majority oppose the retirement. The concerned minority provides us with the public cover to make the decision.”

Tanaka absorbed the logic. ”You planned to retire them from the start.”

”I placed them in the Shōnen Blaze to trigger this exact pressure,” Marvin said. His tone carried the cold calculation of a chess player who explained a trap three moves after it closed. ”I wanted Shueisha to attack us. I wanted the media to call the books dangerous. Do you understand the psychology of the teenage market, Gregg?”

”The Yabuhebi,” Gregg murmured over the speaker as realization dawned.

”The minute you try to bury a story, you make it worth digging up,” Marvin said, and a smile touched his lips. ”When a group of old men in suits point at a book and tell the youth, ’This manga is dangerous—do not read it,’ what happens? The teenagers do not look away. They ask, ’Wait, what is in this book? Let me check.’ The criticism generates curiosity. The restriction generates rebellion. Shueisha thought they buried us. Instead, they handed us a multi-million-dollar marketing campaign for free. Seven hundred and fifty thousand weekly readers is the evidence. We captured their attention.”

Marvin leaned forward and rested his elbows on the desk. ”Now, we execute the pivot. We take the two most controversial works and give them their own platform. It makes a different argument.”

”Blaze Dark,” Tanaka said.

”A separate, dedicated magazine,” Marvin confirmed. ”Classified as seinen. Adult content, retail restrictions, honest about what it is. The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2047 continue in that new format without the shōnen classification to provide ammunition to government critics. The stories do not end. The readers who want the blood and the grit will follow the titles to the correct platform.”

Amy wrote the launch window in her notebook. The business logic was clean. The sequence had existed in Marvin’s original architecture, though Shueisha’s panic had accelerated the timeline.

”The sales decline,” Marvin said to address the lingering hesitation in Tanaka’s voice.

”Hiroshi-san, I want to be direct. We will see a reduction in weekly circulation for Shōnen Blaze when the announcement processes and the two series complete their first volume run. I accept this dip. The magazine’s financial position does not depend on a squeeze of every yen out of those two series right now. The long-term health of the publication depends on a defensible brand identity and a regulatory relationship. We need to operate without the government at our doors.”

”The weekly losses,” Tanaka said. He raised the figure that haunted the accounting department.

”The magazine is not designed to turn a profit at this stage,” Marvin explained. His voice carried the authority of a seasoned CEO. ”The printing costs, the distribution infrastructure, the editorial salaries—these act as customer acquisition costs. They serve as investments in the platform. The real revenue comes from the IP downstream. The magazine builds the audience. The audience creates the demand for the anime adaptations, the video games, the merchandise, the licensed products. The magazine’s profitability is a 2002 event. Not a 1999 event.”

Tanaka remained quiet for a moment. The operating loss proved catastrophic when measured in yen for a traditional publisher, but served as a calculated rounding error when converted to dollars against Marvin’s total portfolio. The older man understood the strategy. But the visceral experience of money leaving the accounts faster than it entered produced its own anxiety.

”Do not worry about the burn rate,” Marvin said. He softened his tone to offer the human reassurance the editor needed. ”You build the foundation of a business, Tanaka-san. Focus on the stories. The numbers will follow reality.”

”Understood, President,” Tanaka replied. His voice firmed up.

”The replacement works,” Marvin pivoted. ”What have you confirmed for the open slots in the lineup?”

Tanaka took a breath and moved to a topic where he held confidence.

”Kishimoto-san’s Naruto sits halfway through the first volume of drafts,” he said. ”The quality is exceptional. The revision work he completed on the pilot Chapter addressed every pacing issue we identified. The world-building in the opening arc is more developed than his initial one-shot suggested.”

”Good,” Marvin said. ”Naruto is the anchor for the next few years. What else?”

”We are in deep discussions with a mangaka named Hiro Mashima,” Tanaka said. ”He has an original concept called Rave Master. The world-building draws on conventional shōnen adventure tropes, but the execution shows strong commercial instincts. Fast pacing, accessible character designs. The action sequencing is confident.”

”It lacks the depth of our core works,” Marvin noted.

”Yes,” Tanaka admitted. ”But it has genuine commercial potential. Rave Master is the kind of series that readers who come for the heavy, premium works encounter and find enjoyable. It is an easy read.”

”A bridge volume between the extraordinary and the standard,” Marvin said. ”That serves a purpose. A magazine containing only works of heavy psychological ambition exhausts the average reader. We need a range of registers. A reader needs something light to transition between Death Note and Vinland Saga.”

”That is how we evaluated it,” Gregg agreed.

”Confirm Mashima-san,” Marvin ordered. ”Draft the contracts. The terms match Kishimoto-san’s. We do not offer different tiers based on projected popularity. Every creator in the magazine receives the creator-first ownership structure. That bedrock differentiates us from Shueisha.”

”Moving to the advertising revenue structure,” Amy said. She checked the spreadsheet in front of her. ”Tanaka-san, you prepared the current position.”

”Yes,” Tanaka said. ”The premium full-page rate for a single issue sits at one million yen per page. Based on the circulation of seven hundred and fifty thousand copies and our demographic profile—male, twelve to twenty-five, with a high crossover into female readership in the older segment—we have strong interest from the expected corporate categories.”

”The backhand positioning,” Marvin said.

A brief pause hung on the Tokyo end.

”The Scarlet Capital Japan portfolio,” Marvin clarified for the room. ”We hold equity positions in Sony, Nintendo, Bandai, Capcom, Konami, Square, and Toshiba. These companies act as natural advertisers for a magazine reaching this demographic. Structurally, the advertising revenue flows from companies in which we hold equity. The advertising expenditure returns to our own ledgers through those investment positions.”

”The rates they receive,” Amy prompted.

”The rates reflect the portfolio relationship,” Marvin said. ”We charge them the market rate. We do not engage in sweetheart arrangements that trigger regulatory audits. But the backhand relationship means that when Nintendo’s marketing team allocates a budget between Shueisha’s Jump and our Blaze, the decision occurs with the awareness of the equity relationship at the board level. We don’t need to demand the ad buy. The backhand handles that.”

Tanaka understood the elegance of the corporate loop. Nothing required a direct threat or a handwritten memo. The money flowed in a circle.

”The current advertising revenue per issue,” Amy said. Her pen traced down a column. ”At one million yen per page, with twenty premium advertising pages per issue.”

”Twenty million yen per weekly issue,” Tanaka confirmed. ”Against printing and distribution costs of eighty-five million yen per issue at the current volume.”

”The gap is the investment,” Marvin said. ”And it is closing. When we hit one million weekly readers—which we will reach in three to five months—we raise the ad rates. The unit economics balance out. We’re getting a bit closer to breaking even..”

”Let us discuss the European distribution initiative,” Amy said. She shifted to the final agenda item.

”Begin with the United Kingdom,” Marvin directed. ”London first, then Manchester and Edinburgh. The model is not retail-primary. It is logistics-primary. The Meyers Mall in each location operates as a warehouse and a direct retail storefront.”

Gregg provided the context for Tanaka. ”The physical store acts as the anchor for the regional distribution network,” Gregg explained. ”It stocks the full Meyers product range. Shōnen Blaze issues, the Meyers book catalog, the music releases, the apparel, and merchandise. Direct retail through the front doors is the visible component. The engine is the distribution out the back doors to local UK bookstores, general stores, comic retailers, and import shops throughout the region.”

”The stores will hold a modest footprint,” Marvin said. ”One per major city. The function matters more than the square footage. Each mall serves as a distribution hub to supply hundreds of independent retailers in its surrounding radius. We do not compete with established retail chains like Waterstones or Walmart. We empower independent retailers to carry our products without the logistics nightmare of direct international importation.”

”The UK launch date,” Amy said.

”Quarter three of this year,” Marvin stated. ”The lease negotiations are underway. The London location sits in Soho. It offers the right demographic density and proximity to the creative industry communities that serve as our western audience. The Manchester and Edinburgh locations will open in quarter four.”

Tanaka remained quiet to absorb the scope of the ambition. A Japanese manga magazine moving into European distribution through dedicated, company-owned retail infrastructure served as an alien strategy. He read the business plan, but the operational timeline made the scale real.

”The Shōnen Blaze UK position,” Tanaka asked. ”The magazine prints in Japanese. The European audience cannot read it.”

”The European audience for the physical magazine consists of the Japanese expatriate community and the manga enthusiast community,” Marvin answered. ”Both groups act as viable markets. However, the English edition development runs as a parallel project. The translation and localization teams should be at work. By the time the London store opens its doors, we should have the first twenty back issues available in English alongside the current Japanese edition.”

”An English edition,” Tanaka repeated. ”Of the full weekly magazine.”

”Of the full magazine,” Marvin confirmed. ”We start with the first twenty issues, and move to simultaneous global releases by issue forty-five. Publishers serve the European market with limited selections and year-long delays. We will bring the full catalog directly to their shelves, on our own schedule.”

The conversation stretched for another thirty minutes. They covered the logistics of the English translation pipeline, the UK retail partnerships the London team secured, and the preliminary timelines to expand the supply chain into France and Germany.

When the call ended, the speakerphone clicked off. The library fell silent, save for the crackle of the wood fire in the hearth.

Amy closed her notebook. She looked across the desk.

”The Blaze Dark launch,” she said. ”The timeline.”

”Quarter four. September or October,” Marvin replied. ”I want the adult magazine positioned on the shelves before the Witcher and Cyberpunk run concludes in Shōnen Blaze. The readers need a seamless transition. No gaps.”

”I will track the content classification paperwork for the seinen designation.”

”Oshi Nohara’s legal team in Tokyo is drafting it,” he said.

She made a final notation. ”The UK store leases.”

”The Cheiron Studios, European expansion team in London is handling the real estate,” Marvin said. ”They will have the final Soho location locked in by Friday.”

She closed the notebook and capped her pen. ”Seven hundred and fifty thousand copies,” she said, and shook her head. ”In seven months.”

”The ceiling sits much higher than that,” he said.

”How much higher?”

He picked up his glass of milk. He took a sip and considered the board.

”When Naruto launches,” he said, and set the glass down, ”we will find out.”
