For several long seconds, the entire crew simply sat there, absorbing what they had just witnessed before reality slowly returned to the room.

Nicole let out a slow, shaky breath and rested her head against the side of the wardrobe. She brushed away the tears lingering on her cheeks, taking a moment to leave Grace Stewart behind.

When she looked over, Marvin was still sitting beside her on the floor.

A warm smile spread across her face.

”My God,” Nicole said softly, brushing a few loose strands of hair away from his forehead. ”You are unbelievably good at that.”

Marvin wiped the last traces of tears from his face with the sleeve of his sweater and sat up straighter. Nicholas disappeared almost instantly, replaced by the calm, composed young professional everyone on set had come to know.

”You made it easy,” he said with a smile. ”The way you pulled me out of that wardrobe—I didn’t have to fake half the panic. You sold it.”

Nicole laughed quietly. ”I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Beside them, Lindsay let out a long breath and rubbed at her eyes.

”I’m serious, Marvin,” she said. ”When you grabbed my cardigan, I honestly thought something was wrong. You were shaking so much I almost forgot we were filming.”

Alejandro finally stepped out from behind the monitors, still staring at the three of them.

He shook his head.

”That was... beautiful.”

He pointed toward Nicole.

”The moment the truth hit Grace... I could actually see it happen. You didn’t rush it. You let the audience discover it with you.”

Then he looked at Lindsay.

”And your reaction was exactly what it needed to be. You fought it right until the end.”

Finally, his attention settled on Marvin.

”And you...” He smiled. ”That last line...”

”We’re just sick... aren’t we?”

”You didn’t play it for drama. You played it like a little boy looking to his mother for an answer. That’s what made it hurt. It breaks the heart completely. It grounds the supernatural horror in pure, agonizing human tragedy.”

Nancy folded her arms, unable to hide the pride on her face.

”I told you,” she said with a grin. ”My nephew isn’t just a pop star.”

Alejandro laughed. ”No... he’s not.”

He turned toward the crew and clapped his hands once.

”That’s the one!” he called. ”Print it. We’re not doing another take.”

The room finally came back to life.

Crew members hurried toward their equipment. Lights shifted into new positions. Cables were rolled aside as everyone prepared for the next setup.

Marvin rose to his feet and offered a hand to Nicole, then another to Lindsay, helping both of them up from the floor.

They had just filmed the emotional heart of the story.

They had just executed one of the most iconic, shocking plot twists in modern cinematic history.

If the finished film captured even half of what everyone in that room had just felt, and judging by the electric energy still humming on the soundstage, audiences wouldn’t simply be frightened. They’d leave the theater with broken hearts.

Sitting behind the monitor with Alejandro—the director hired by Miramax strictly on Marvin’s recommendation—Marvin watched the playback of the scene they had just wrapped.

”Her emotional control is simply perfect,” Marvin noted, his eyes tracking Nicole’s breakdown on the small screen.

Alejandro nodded enthusiastically. ”This is the most incredible crew I have ever worked with. The studio is selling it as a ghost story, but the character work... this feels like something that could be a genuine Oscar contender.”

”The script carries the weight,” Marvin agreed. ”Truly, everyone is doing a fantastic job,”

Alejandro added, leaning back. ”Including you, Marvin, and Lindsay. Great performances all around.”

Nicole joined them by the monitors, unscrewing a bottle of water. A trace of exhaustion lingered beneath her smile, but so did a quiet, undeniable satisfaction.

”Careful, Alejandro,” she said with a light laugh, her natural Australian cadence slipping through. ”Don’t underestimate the genre. Who says horror films can’t win Oscars? Just look at what Marvin accomplished with *The Sixth Sense*.”

She took a slow sip of water, her smile thinning into something much sharper. ”And it could have gotten much more if Harvey hadn’t played around so much this season.”

The air around the monitors immediately cooled.

Nicole wasn’t making idle conversation. Her voice carried a raw, bitter edge—salt-sharp and unfiltered, the kind of venom that came from years of watching the game rigged against her.

Like every other serious actress grinding through the brutal machinery of late-90s Hollywood, she had sat through the recent Academy Awards with a stomach-churning mix of disgust and cold, dawning clarity. Harvey Weinstein hadn’t merely bought the Oscars; he had gutted them, stripped them of any remaining pretense of merit, and left the gilded statues reeking of transactional rot.

The industry’s oldest open secret had been laid bare once again: Gwyneth’s golden trophy had far less to do with her corseted performance than with her calculated submission to the Weinstein machine—her body offered up as currency on the campaign trail. Harvey had rewritten the rules of engagement in broad, brutal strokes. A transcendent performance was no longer sufficient. To stand on that stage clutching Oscar, an actress now had to whore herself out during awards season, smiling through gritted teeth while trading flesh for votes, becoming one of Harvey’s prized, high-value assets in a marketplace of flesh and favors.

For the talentless and the desperate, it was a vile but effective shortcut—an express lane to glory paid for on their knees. For women like Nicole, who bled for every role, who poured their souls into the craft only to watch the art form degraded into a high-class escort service, it was a profound humiliation. The Oscars had become a brothel with better lighting, and everyone in the room knew it. In 1999, the town’s underbelly was no longer hidden; it simply wore a tuxedo and handed out statues to the highest bidder.

Alejandro’s enthusiastic demeanor vanished. He closed his mouth, suddenly finding the technical readout on his monitor fascinating.

Harvey Weinstein was a terrifying, vindictive powerhouse, and he was the primary financial backer of the very film they were shooting.

Alejandro was a talented foreign director trying to carve out a foothold in the ruthless American studio system; he had absolutely zero protection if Harvey decided to ruin him.

Nicole was fine. She had Tom Cruise’s billion-dollar empire shielding her. Marvin was fine. He was arguably the most powerful prodigy on the planet, completely untouchable even to Harvey or Tom. But Alejandro was entirely exposed.

Sensing the sudden, suffocating silence, Nicole stiffened. She realized she had let her guard down too much, lulled into a false sense of security by Marvin’s relaxed, dominant presence on set. She had let her real, cynical self bleed out where the crew could hear.

She offered an apologetic, tight smile. ”I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have brought him up.”

”No,” Marvin replied, his voice completely calm, utterly devoid of Alejandro’s fear. ”You’re just saying what half the town says once the cameras stop rolling.”

He leaned back in his director’s chair, crossing his arms. He looked around the soundstage, then back to the director. ”Actually, I’ve finally figured out Harvey’s secret.”

Alejandro looked over cautiously, terrified of where this was going but unable to look away.

Nicole raised a delicate eyebrow. ”Oh?”

Marvin nodded with absolute, deadpan seriousness. ”Everyone in Hollywood thinks he spends millions campaigning for Oscars.”

A beat.

”He doesn’t.”

Another beat.

”He simply corners people at parties and refuses to leave until they vote for his movie just to make him go away.”

Nicole blinked. Alejandro pressed his lips together, his shoulders shaking as he fought down a reaction.

Marvin didn’t break character. ”If you ever lose Harvey at a Vanity Fair gala, don’t panic. You will find him standing beside an eighty-year-old Academy voter. Three days later... he will still be standing there, physically blocking the exit, explaining why his period piece is the greatest human achievement since the discovery of electricity.”

Alejandro broke. He burst into a loud, genuine laugh, the sheer absurdity of the image completely shattering his anxiety.

Nicole covered her mouth, her shoulders dropping as she laughed despite herself, the bitter tension completely washed away.

”You are absolutely impossible,” Nicole said, shaking her head, laughter still lingering in her voice.

”So I’ve been told,” Marvin smiled faintly.

The weight she’d been carrying eased almost instantly. With a few perfectly timed jokes, Marvin had turned an uncomfortable silence into shared laughter, stepping in without hesitation and making sure she never had to stand alone after speaking her mind.

She looked at him, intending to say something else.

Instead, her words caught.

The easy confidence with which he carried himself, the warmth in his smile, the quiet certainty in his eyes... it all combined into something dangerously attractive. For a fleeting moment, the rest of the set seemed to fade into the background.

’Good Lord...’ she thought, feeling an unfamiliar flutter in her chest. ’When did he become this handsome?’

A faint warmth crept into her cheeks.

She quickly reached for her bottle of water, pretending to take a sip as though it might hide the smile threatening to betray her.

Marvin glanced at her, amused.

”What?”

Nicole met his eyes again and gave the smallest shake of her head, the corners of her lips curving upward.

”Nothing,” she replied softly. ”I was just thinking...” Her gaze lingered on him for another heartbeat before she looked away with a quiet laugh. ”You’re a very dangerous man, Marvin.”

”That’s a new one.”

”It wasn’t meant as a compliment.”

”Oh?”

”It absolutely was,” Nicole admitted, almost under her breath, unable to keep the smile from returning.

The knot of tension in her chest quietly unraveled. Marvin had stepped in so effortlessly that she no longer felt exposed for speaking her mind. It was classic Marvin—turning an awkward silence into shared laughter at Harvey’s expense. Her eyes lingered on him for a heartbeat longer than she intended, taking in the easy confidence behind his strikingly handsome face. She was grateful he had chosen to stand beside her instead of letting her face the room alone.

The political gloom dissolved. Even Alejandro relaxed, wiping his eyes as he turned back to the monitor.

”Now,” Marvin said, tapping the playback controls on the deck. ”Before Harvey magically appears out of thin air to personally campaign for today’s dailies... let’s get back to making a film actually worthy of arguing about.”

---

The days slipped by with surprising speed.

Over the following two weeks, Marvin completed his scenes, carefully shaping every performance to match the quiet melancholy Alejandro wanted. He understood exactly where to hold back, where to let emotion linger, and where silence spoke louder than dialogue.

Off camera, however, his attention often drifted toward Lindsay.

She was only months away from turning thirteen, caught in that awkward space between childhood and adolescence. Years in the entertainment industry had already taught her to chase approval before she was old enough to understand why she wanted it. Praise from directors mattered. Good reviews mattered. Making people happy mattered.

Marvin quietly worked to make sure those things never became the foundation of her self-worth.

He celebrated the little victories no one else noticed—the extra hour she spent studying for school, the confidence she gained after nailing a difficult scene, the kindness she showed exhausted crew members at the end of fourteen-hour days. Whenever she doubted herself, he reminded her that a bad take never made her a bad actress, and a successful film never determined her value as a person.

Slowly, Lindsay began believing it.

The frantic need to prove herself started giving way to something steadier. She laughed more between takes. She stopped apologizing every time she made a mistake. More importantly, she stopped measuring her happiness by whether someone praised her that day.

She wasn’t facing everything alone, either.

Scarlett, Jessica, and several of the younger cast members naturally drew her into their circle. They teased one another, talked a lot, watched movies, and argued over music as only teenagers could. Around them, Lindsay didn’t feel like a child star carrying everyone’s expectations.

To undo damage done by her parents, Marvin buried her in affection. Every day, he gave her the warmth, reassurance, and praise she had spent her childhood chasing.

Because he had entered her life two years earlier, the wounds had never been allowed to fester as they had for child stars like Beyoncé or Britney, whose identities had been eroded by Hollywood and their own families. Lindsay’s scars were still fresh enough to heal much sooner.

He made it his mission to separate Lindsay the girl from Lindsay the star. Hollywood constantly demanded that child actors become whatever sold tickets, pleased directors, or satisfied ambitious parents.
