King of the Wilderness

Chapter 435: Chapter 242: Super Defense Matrix

This is a modern beast clad in classic attire.

He placed the rifle on the carpet in front of the fireplace, spread out a special gun cleaning mat, and then took out a complete set of maintenance tools: carbon fiber cleaning rods, gun cleaning cloths, Hoppe’s No. 9 gun oil, nylon brushes...

The flames dancing in the fireplace reflected on his focused profile as he skillfully dismantled the bolt, threaded a small piece of gun oil-soaked cleaning cloth onto the rod, then gently and steadily pushed it forward from the breech end.

”Ssss—”

The cleaning cloth passed through the precision rifling, specially reinforced for firing .300 Winchester Magnum rounds, and emitted a captivating slight friction sound.

He repeated this action over and over, then used a small brush to meticulously clean every tiny corner of the bolt, not missing any speck that might affect firing due to dust and impurities.

The entire living room was filled only with the crackling of firewood in the fireplace and the crisp metallic clinks from his gun maintenance.

Aliya and Emily quietly watched him, not disturbing. From his focused and steady movements, they felt a powerful, reassuring strength.

In his heart, he even vaguely anticipated the invasion of the wolf pack.

Not just to eliminate the threat, but because he yearned for a battle — to test his survival qualification on this land and to establish stronger prestige in the Wiseman community!

As he steadily pressed the last .300 Winchester Magnum brass case into the magazine and pushed the shiny bolt back into its place, a sharper ”click” sounded.

He placed the rifle at the most handy spot beside the fireplace, lifted his head, and looked out the window again.

At this moment, there was no trace of tension in his eyes.

Instead, there was a hunter’s patience unique to awaiting prey.

December 27th, early morning.

The night passed uneventfully, the anticipated wolf howls, door scratching sounds, or the mournful cries from the traps being triggered did not occur.

This extreme tranquility, instead, weighed heavily on his heart like a giant stone.

As the horizon began to reveal a color between deep blue and bright white, Lin Yu’an quietly got out of bed. Without disturbing anyone, he took his Winchester M70 and walked into the cold morning wind.

Following the footprints left last night, he carefully headed toward the first trap point. A thin layer of new frost covered the snow, sparkling like diamonds in the morning light, beautiful yet cold.

Any fresh footprints would be completely visible on this terrain. He conducted a thorough search, checking all potential bottlenecks and passages.

However, he found nothing.

He arrived at the first trap point and squatted down.

The surface of the snow was as flat as before, even his footprints from last night were perfectly covered by a layer of new frost, showing no flaw.

No new footprints, no new scents, not even any animal footprints appeared; the entire forest was quiet as if a massive tomb.

After completing the perimeter reconnaissance, he began checking the traps set up last night one by one.

The second, the third...

All traps, from the open area in front of the chicken coop to the passageway in the woods at the back, all eight animal traps lay silently beneath the snow without exception.

The wolf pack did not come. They disappeared into thin air as if blending into the atmosphere.

Lin Yu’an did not dwell too much; he knew that the competition with such cunning opponents is a test of patience. From today onwards, daily patrols would become his unwavering routine.

He quickly returned to the cabin.

When he arrived home, Aliya and Emily were already up. The aroma of pancakes and coffee wafted from the kitchen, and the fireplace flames reignited, dispelling the morning chill.

”How was it?” Emily asked with concern, her gaze carrying a hint of tension.

”Nothing happened.” Lin Yu’an shook his head after removing his cold jacket, ”The traps weren’t triggered, and there were no new traces around. They’re good at being patient.”

”Maybe we scared them away?” Aliya brought over a tray of steaming pancakes, trying to reassure him.

”Maybe.” Lin Yu’an smiled, not revealing everything. He knew that for the wolf pack, no harvest doesn’t mean giving up, only waiting for a better opportunity. He didn’t want them to worry excessively.

He washed his face, changed into comfortable home clothes, then took the leash from Aliya.

”Whiskey, Honey, the babies are going on patrol.” The two large dogs wagged their tails excitedly, following him out of the cabin.

He led Whiskey, carefully encircling the cabin and chicken coop once more, allowing Whiskey to renew the scent markings on this territory in the most primitive way.

After patrol, a sumptuous and warm breakfast was already laid on the table. Golden pancakes, fresh blueberries, paired with aromatic coffee and milk. Olivia and Ethan sat in baby chairs, waving their little hands curiously.

At the dining table, the three did not discuss the wolf topic anymore. Since the threat was present, they would calmly respond. Excessive anxiety would only ruin the rare family time.

After breakfast, Lin Yu’an kissed the foreheads of the two children and embraced and bid farewell to Aliya and Emily.

”I’m going to see Uncle George.”

”Be careful,” she replied.

He mounted the more agile Polaris snowmobile, the engine let out a crisp roar, carrying him deeper into the snow field to complete the unfinished business from yesterday.

”Hey there, kid.” Old George saw him, nodded slightly, and pointed to the box filled with cooling sand beside the anvil, ”Your work is still lying there.”

”Uncle George, I’m here to continue yesterday’s lesson.” Lin Yu’an was straightforward, his eyes full of eagerness for the upcoming lessons.

”Hmm,” Old George seemed to have anticipated his words long ago.
