King of the Wilderness

Chapter 428: Chapter 240: Potential Threat! (2)

For a wolf pack with a strong sense of territory, this is an extremely dangerous distance.

They usually try to stay as far away as possible from the scent and traces of human activity, choosing their hunting and feeding places deeper within their territory.

Hunting and feeding so boldly near a human settlement itself is a highly abnormal behavior.

He saw a set of extraordinarily large wolf footprints, almost a third bigger than the other wolf prints around them. Judging from the depth of the prints, this wolf must be remarkably heavy.

Undoubtedly, this is the ”Alpha” leader of the wolf pack. It was these colossal footprints that made him initially feel the illusion that this wasn’t an animal he was familiar with.

More importantly, although the scene was bloody, there were not many reindeer remains, indicating that the wolf pack did not finish sharing the prey on the spot.

Instead, they dragged most of the meat into the depths of the forest. It seemed they were only here for a ”declarative” meal.

Lin Yu’an’s expression became immensely grave.

He immediately ruled out the most naive option of ”coincidence.” Animal behavior always has the most primitive, direct motivations behind it.

Is this... a test? Or a provocation?

He remembered various descriptions of wolf pack intelligence, where they would leave the remains of prey at the edge of their territory to assert sovereignty against invaders from their kind or other predators.

And now, they chose this demonstration spot so close to humans. What do they intend to do?

Could it be... for some reason, they have started to regard this human settlement, with its warm wooden houses and chicken flocks, as a potential ”food storage”?

No matter which possibility, this is certainly not a good omen.

This undisguised aggression has surpassed the necessities of survival and resembles more of a provocation.

He silently noted the location, marked it with his phone GPS, and then restarted the loader.

But this time, his gaze became more vigilant, scanning every suspicious movement along the road like radar.

A few minutes later, Stan’s familiar wooden house finally appeared in view, allowing Lin Yu’an’s tense nerves to relax slightly.

Stan’s home was a house with a more traditional style, built by himself. When Lin Yu’an arrived, Stan was wearing a woolen hat, clearing snow off the roof.

”Hey, Lin! You’re here!” Stan saw him and showed a bright smile, with a hint of rugged warmth.

He pointed to the yellow giant behind Lin Yu’an, ”Looks like it’s a big project today.”

”Good morning, Stan.” Lin Yu’an jumped down from the cab, responding with a smile, ”Coming to pick up our chicks to their new home.”

Stan climbed down the ladder, dusted off the snow from his hands, ”Come on, your little guys can’t wait.” He led Lin Yu’an into the warm, clean shed behind the house.

A scent mixed with hay and the characteristic odor of birds hit with him upon entering. In the shed, dozens of fully feathered Chanticleer chickens were leisurely pacing in their respective compartments.

Covered entirely with thick, black-and-white feathers with a pretty ”barred” pattern, their combs and wattles were very small, tight against their heads, preventing frostbite in extremely low temperatures.

Compared to ordinary chickens, they were more compact, with thicker legs, looking like little ”tanks” wearing thick wool sweaters, their bright eyes appeared full of energy.

”Look at these guys, so beautiful.” Stan’s face was full of pride, like an artist showing off their proud work.

He casually grabbed one, the chicken not panicking, just staying docilely in his rough big hands, ”Chanticleer chickens, they’re fully grown now. Not those you can buy in stores.”

”Decades ago, they were bred by a guy named Brother Wilfrid Shatland in Quebec, Canada, taking over ten years to develop little by little through crossbreeding.”

”First, he chose the Black Cornish Chicken, known for meat production. Then, he introduced the high-yield White Leghorn Chicken. To make these chickens both gentle and strong, adapting to various environments, he added the bloodline of the White Plymouth Rock.”

”Finally, he found the White Wyandotte Chicken with a precious feature — its comb and wattles are so small they’re almost negligible, right against the head. This is the ultimate weapon against severe cold!”

”He worked like a patient alchemist, spending years meticulously extracting and merging the ’golden genes’ from these different breeds, going through countless generations of breeding until finally creating this treasure.”

He pointed to the nearly invisible comb, ”See? Almost invisible comb. It’s one of the most crucial cold-resistant features. Chickens with gigantic combs wouldn’t last a night in Alaska winters; the flesh on their heads would be frozen off.” ℴ

”Their feathers are particularly thick, double-layered like wearing two down jackets, perfectly adapted to the climate here. Plus, they’re gentle in nature, not prone to fighting, making them ideal for domestication.”

Stan returned the chicken to its compartment and continued introducing, ”Most importantly, they’re dual-purpose. The hens’ egg production rate is very stable, even during the pitch-black winters, as long as you provide enough light and protein, they can maintain decent yield.”
