Super Rich by Doing as You Please

So, under Xu Yun’s lead, the couple followed him and Chen Xin to where he had parked.

From a distance, Zhang Lei and his wife spotted a pristine white Bentley Flying Spur.

Just as they were about to walk past it, Xu Yun suddenly stopped in front of the car and went no further.

”Why’d you stop?”

Zhang Lei figured Xu Yun was just like him, captivated by the car.

He chuckled. ”Come on, let’s go. Stop staring. Most people couldn’t afford a car like this in their lifetime.”

Xu Yun said, ”No, we’re here. At my car.”

”We’re here?”

Zhang Lei and his wife glanced around. All they saw were typical mid-range sedans; there weren’t any cheaper-looking cars in sight.

He asked in confusion, ”Where is it?”

”The one right in front of you.”

”You’re saying this is your car? Don’t joke around. That’s not...”

Before Zhang Lei could finish, Xu Yun pulled a key fob from his pocket and pressed a button.

BEEP! BEEP!

With two pleasant-sounding chirps, the Bentley Flying Spur—the pinnacle of the garage’s style and status—instantly unlocked.

Its headlights flashed on, illuminating Zhang Lei and his wife as they stood in front of it.

Zhang Lei stared in shock at the key fob in Xu Yun’s hand, then at the unlocked white Bentley. ”This is your car?” he asked in disbelief.

Xu Yun looked at Zhang Lei, whose mouth had formed an ”O” of astonishment, and replied with a smile.

”Yep. It’s mine.”

”Impossible. Absolutely impossible.”

Zhang Lei said in denial, ”This car costs millions. How could it be yours? Stop kidding me.”

’He’d come here intending to laugh at the guy!’

’And now you’re telling me he actually drives a car worth millions?’

’What a joke.’

”It really is Xu Yun’s car.”

Standing to the side, Chen Xin spoke up for the first time, adding with a smile, ”I can vouch for him.”

”I don’t believe it. You two aren’t fooling me.”

In his heart, Zhang Lei couldn’t believe or accept it.

’This doesn’t make any sense!’

’I know his family’s financial situation, I know his background.’

’There’s no way this cousin of mine has the money for a car like this. Otherwise, his last girlfriend wouldn’t have broken up with him.’

He shot back, ”You just work a regular job. How high can your salary be? Where did you get the money for this car?”

”Ah, you got me. I knew I couldn’t fool you.”

Xu Yun stepped forward and said consolingly, ”You’re right, it’s not actually my car. I rented it for three hundred a day. I’m back for my mom’s birthday and just wanted to put on a good show. You can’t tell anyone, okay?”

”Oh, so it’s a rental.”

Hearing this, Zhang Lei immediately breathed a sigh of relief. ”See, I knew it,” he chuckled. ”How could you suddenly have the money to buy such an expensive car? You gave me a real shock.”

”You seem to really like this car.”

Xu Yun offered, ”Why don’t you get in? I can give you a ride home so you can experience it.”

”No thanks, we have our own car.”

Zhang Lei’s sense of superiority and swagger instantly returned. He said pointedly, ”Your car is nice, but at the end of the day, it’s not yours. No matter how great a car is, driving it doesn’t give you the same peace of mind as driving your own.”

”All right, then. We’ll get going.”

Xu Yun chuckled, put their things in the trunk, moved a traffic cone out of the way, then opened the door and got in. With Chen Xin beside him, he hit the gas and drove off.

Zhang Lei stood rooted to the spot and spat.

”Renting a car... what a poser! Honey, let’s go.”

On the way, Chen Xin asked curiously, ”Why didn’t you just tell him you bought the car and wipe that arrogant smirk off his face?”

”Even if I told him I bought it, he wouldn’t have believed me.”

Xu Yun chuckled. ”Instead of arguing, it was better to give him an answer he could believe—one that made him feel better, too.”

”I just can’t stand that cousin of yours. He’s such a snob.”

”He’s not really a snob. It’s because of our families’ circumstances. He’s just always had a natural sense of superiority over me.”

Xu Yun explained, ”But if you suddenly tell him the tables have turned, that everything’s reversed, it’s perfectly normal that he can’t accept it right away.”

”I still don’t like him. I’m going to write him into my book as a minor villain and then utterly humiliate him.”

Xu Yun was left speechless.

’Good grief,’ he thought. ’Her words cut like a knife, don’t they?’

’He wondered if he, too, would one day become a casualty of her writing.’

Before long, they were home.

When Zhang Sujuan saw them return with so much seafood in addition to the items on the original list, she asked, ”Who’s going to prepare all this? I don’t know how.”

”Chen Xin will,” Xu Yun replied.

”Huh? Me? I don’t know how, either.”

Xu Yun chuckled. ”It’s fine. We’ll watch a tutorial video and learn as we go.”

Chen Xin and Zhang Sujuan: ”...”

’Easy for you to say since you’re not the one doing it.’

’Still, they’d already bought all this expensive food. They had to prepare it now, whether they wanted to or not.’

While they worked, Zhang Sujuan and Chen Xin started chatting, and somehow the conversation turned to Xu Yun’s encounter with Zhang Lei at the supermarket.

Zhang Sujuan asked casually, ”They didn’t say anything to each other?”

”Oh, they did.”

Chen Xin replied with a smile, ”He was even bragging to Xu Yun about his car, which is worth a few hundred thousand.”

”And what did Xu Yun say?”

”Xu Yun said his own car was too cheap to mention. But then they ran into him again in the parking garage, and the guy insisted on seeing Xu Yun’s car.

Then, when he saw Xu Yun’s Bentley, which is worth millions, his whole attitude soured. He refused to believe it.

In the end, Xu Yun had to lie and say the car was just a rental. Only then did the guy seem to feel a little better.”

”That boy, Zhang Lei... my sister-in-law has spoiled him since he was little. His character really is lacking.”

It wasn’t that Zhang Sujuan was clueless; on the contrary, she was well aware of the situation.

She said to Chen Xin, ”Our family wasn’t well-off in the past, so when the boys were little and played together, Zhang Lei was always the dominant one. He always had to take Xu Yun’s things.
