Holding Their Own Space, the Family Returns to the Apocalypse

92: This? They don’t understand either. In the entire Safety Tower, Old Fei was the only one who dared to speak to the top leader like that; after all, he was an elder who had watched Gu Yan grow up.

Gu Yan quickly adjusted his emotions and calmed down completely. Looking at Old Fei, he said, ”Tell me now, I’ve calmed down.”

Old Fei stopped making fun of him and said bluntly, ”After our extensive research, we’ve found that consuming even a small amount of energy stone powder can stimulate a person’s latent potential. As for what kind of supernatural power they obtain, it varies from person to person.”

Gu Yan took a deep breath and murmured, ”Superpowers really exist... everything recorded in that ancient book was true!”

He forced himself to quickly accept the facts, to accept that there was another unknown side to this world.

”Stop embarrassing yourself. You’ve lived all these years and yet you’re not even as calm as little Xiheng,” Old Fei said with a look of disdain.

Gu Xiheng, who was following behind, remained silent upon hearing such a miraculous thing, his face showing no emotional fluctuations.

In reality, while he appeared calm on the surface, his heart was already in a state of upheaval.

”Haha, he’s my son; he’s better than me. I only feel that I have a worthy successor, and I’m proud of it,” Gu Yan said with a laugh, not caring at all about Old Fei’s sarcasm.

”Hmph... as if no one else has a son. I have one too, and my grandson is so outstanding—just as outstanding as I am!” Old Fei said, unwilling to be outdone, unable to stand Gu Yan’s gloating.

”That’s true. The fact that Little Mo could live outside on his own for a year already proves he’s capable enough,” Gu Yan said quickly with a smile.

”Of course, Mo Li is the best!”

Old Fei put away his joking expression and said seriously, ”Alright, let’s get down to business. Who do you plan to have try it first? However, let me be blunt: these are just the experimental results we’ve obtained. We still don’t know what the side effects will be when it’s actually used on a human!”

”This...”

”Dad, let me go first!” Gu Xiheng suddenly spoke up.

”Xiheng, this isn’t a joke. No one has tried it before, and we don’t know if there’s any danger in the process. Are you sure?”

”Dad, I’m sure! Someone has to try it, so it might as well be me. No matter what the danger is, I can handle it!”

”Xiheng...”

”Dad, you don’t need to say anything more. My mind is made up. Since someone has to try it, why can’t that person be me?”

Old Fei and Gu Yan were speechless for a long moment. After a silence, Gu Yan finally spoke: ”Fine. Old Fei, give it to him now.”

Old Fei sighed inwardly. The energy stone could indeed stimulate the human body’s potential and grant supernatural abilities, but no one knew what the consequences would be. For Gu Xiheng to be the first test subject was indeed a bit risky.

Old Fei’s team used a special machine to scrape off a small pile of powder, about five grams, and handed it to Gu Xiheng.

Gu Xiheng poured it into his mouth without hesitation, took a sip of water, and washed it all down... ”Xiheng, how do you feel?” Everyone stared at Gu Xiheng nervously, their eyes never leaving him for a second.

Researchers observed him closely with pens and paper, making notes from time to time. The entire process was filmed by someone nearby for subsequent research.

Gu Xiheng sensed carefully for a moment. ”I don’t feel anything.”

”You don’t feel anything?”

Old Fei looked him up and down, stroking the beard at the corner of his mouth and muttering to himself so quietly that no one could hear what he was saying.

In this way, five minutes passed with everyone staring at each other.

Suddenly, Gu Xiheng fainted without any warning.

Someone immediately stepped forward, peeled back his eyelids, performed a thorough check, and then wrote in the notebook: Test Subject No. 1, consumed five grams, no reaction; after five minutes, suddenly fainted and fell into a deep sleep.

Gu Yan looked at the words written with a flourish by that researcher and sucked in a breath of cold air, feeling a phantom ache in his teeth.

Seeing this, Old Fei pulled him over with a smile. ”Scientific researchers just record things this way for the convenience of future experiments. There’s no other meaning behind it.”

Gu Yan understood, but he just felt unhappy. What do you mean ’Test Subject No. 1’? His son wasn’t a test subject!

They placed Gu Xiheng on a laboratory workbench and covered his body with monitoring data cables to track his physical condition.

But the strange thing was that all the data showed normal human physical parameters; there was no abnormality whatsoever.

At this moment, Old Fei realized it wasn’t that there were no abnormalities, but rather that their electronic equipment simply couldn’t detect those abnormal data points.

In fact, earth-shattering changes were indeed occurring within Gu Xiheng’s body, but these changes could not be detected with current technology.

Actually, the smaller the volume of the energy stone, the less is absorbed, and the longer it takes for the effects to manifest. This was why Ai Yue had fainted in the blink of an eye when she absorbed it.

However, Old Fei’s research team had not yet figured this out.

A day later, Gu Xiheng finally woke up. The moment he opened his eyes, a crowd of people swarmed around him.

Someone had been recording Gu Xiheng’s condition by the bed. He wrote: Test Subject No. 1, woke up suddenly without warning after 23 hours.

Gu Yan looked at his son with a face full of concern and grabbed his hand.

Gu Yan: ”Xiheng, how are you? Do you feel any discomfort in your body?”

Old Fei: ”Little Xiheng, how is it? Is there a mysterious power in your body? Show it to us?”

Gu Yan became displeased. ”Show what? He’s not going anywhere. Don’t listen to him. Quickly tell Dad, is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?”

Gu Xiheng sat up abruptly, tore off the monitoring equipment, jumped off the lab table, and after sensing for a moment, shook his head with some disappointment. ”I still don’t feel anything.”

”Focus your attention and try running and jumping,” Old Fei said.

Gu Xiheng did as he was told, but there was still no change... Everyone fell silent. Had the experiment failed? Were the experimental results wrong? Was the energy stone useless? That was impossible; the data they had tested thousands of times couldn’t be wrong.

Gu Xiheng was also feeling a bit dejected. He raised his hands and looked at them with regret. Just then, he felt something strange in his palms, as if they were about to catch fire.

Something miraculous happened. With a ”whoosh,” both of his palms burst into flames, and an intense heat suddenly swept through the entire room.

Gu Xiheng instinctively wanted to shake them off.

The sharp-eyed Old Fei shouted, ”Don’t move!”

Gu Xiheng’s strong willpower, honed over many years, immediately brought his actions under control.

Everyone watched in shock as the flames burned on Gu Xiheng’s hands. Before long, everyone was dripping with sweat.

Gu Xiheng, however, didn’t feel the slightest bit of discomfort.

”Xiheng, we’ve seen your Superpower. You can take it back now,” Old Fei suggested, licking his dry, cracked lips from the heat.

”I can’t,” Gu Xiheng said dryly.

”What?”

”I don’t know how to take it back.”

This... Everyone looked at each other.

They didn’t understand it either.
