Holding Their Own Space, the Family Returns to the Apocalypse

65: They are all people with bitter fates.Just as Ai Yue was hesitating over whether to deal with these children, a woman with disheveled hair suddenly burst in through the door.

As soon as the woman entered and saw the three children kneeling on the ground, she immediately rushed over to embrace them and sobbed to Ai Yue, ”Miss, please don’t eat them. If you want to eat, eat me instead.”

This completely threw Ai Yue off; she hadn’t said anything about eating them.

Ai Yue took a step back, her hand resting on the military knife at her waist. ”I don’t eat people! Nor do I plan to kill you. What is going on with you all?”

Only then did the woman take a moment to check if the children were injured. Finding no injuries, she breathed a sigh of relief. ”Miss, thank you for not beating or killing them. They are my children.”

Seeing Ai Yue’s guarded expression, the woman explained, ”Our family of four is all that’s left of the entire village. Everyone else was either eaten or beaten to death. Those who remained had nothing to eat in the village and fled.”

As she spoke, the woman could no longer endure the pain in her heart and began to wail.

Seeing their mother’s grief, the three children also began to shed tears.

”Then how did you...”

”You want to ask how we survived, right?” The woman raised her arm to wipe away her snot and tears before continuing in a choked voice, ”My house has a cellar. It was originally used for storing vegetables and grain. Once the door is closed, it’s completely isolated from the outside. Since the Apocalypse, our family of five survived on the food in the cellar until a group of people came to the village and looted everyone’s stores. When the villagers had nothing to eat and got desperate enough, they... they could only eat children...”

”The village fell into total chaos. Finally, our family hid in the cellar, but there wasn’t enough water. The children’s father had to go out to fetch water. The last time he went out, he never came back. I didn’t dare go out with the children. I know the children’s father must have been... boohoo...”

The woman could not continue. She covered her mouth tightly, weeping uncontrollably.

Ai Yue sighed deeply. She understood that the husband must have been caught and eaten by the villagers. Fortunately, the four of them were lucky and had lived safely until now.

As for that Little Boy refusing to mention his mother’s existence, it must have been to protect her, not wanting to involve her. Ai Yue felt a deep sense of lament; these children might be the last normal people in the world.

Those so-called adults who even ate people could no longer be called human.

”Alright, you can get up. I won’t do anything to you. However,”

Ai Yue looked at the Little Boy and said, ”Not everyone who comes from outside will be as kind as me and let you go. So, if anyone else comes to the village in the future, don’t come out and don’t get close to them. Once you’re caught, you’ll be eaten. If something happens to you, how sad would your mother be? She wouldn’t be able to live on either. Do you understand?”

The Little Boy nodded quickly and promised, ”We won’t be greedy anymore. We will definitely live well and protect Mama, little brother, and little sister when we grow up.”

Hearing the Little Boy’s words, the woman’s dull eyes brightened a bit, filled with happy tears. She held her children tightly and murmured, ”Mama only hopes you can grow up safely.”

The woman left with the three children. Ai Yue had lost all sleepiness and stood by the window looking at the pitch-black sky. For a moment, she also missed her parents.

Also gazing at the night sky was Gu Xiheng. He sat on the roof of his car, occasionally taking a sip of liquor to warm his stomach and refresh his mind.

On this trip, he didn’t know if he could find an energy stone or obtain extraordinary power to combat the various natural disasters that were about to arrive.

The news of the energy stone was information he had obtained by capturing a manager from the Dark Gold Biological Company. Their company had been searching for energy stones even before the Apocalypse, until not long ago, they discovered energy stones in Xusui Mountain.

At first, Gu Xiheng had scoffed at this news, but later Gu Yan handed him a book, which was one of the heirlooms passed down from ancient times in their Gu Clan.

In this book, many things beyond science were recorded in detail. Only then did he realize that this world had another unknown side. Although he was unwilling to believe it, he understood the weight of the Gu Clan heirlooms all too clearly, and he had no choice but to believe.”}],
