Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 484: Chapter 479: Base Camp

Location:Outer Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Protection Base One

Date/Time:Late Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Day 182, 183 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The sentry saw the mantis first.

The protection base’s outer perimeter was a formation barrier — a wall of cultivated essence stretched across the widest tunnel junction in the Outer Ring. Base One. The main fort. The largest of the six protection bases, positioned nearest to the seal boundary where the portal would eventually open. The other five bases connected to it through a network of defended tunnels that the instructors had established in the first weeks of the Harrowing. The sentry station sat at the barrier’s highest point, a platform carved into the tunnel wall where two students kept watch.

They were watching south. The direction the Charlings came from. The direction nothing good had ever come from in six months of survival.

The mantis emerged from the southern tunnel at walking pace. Jayde had slowed it deliberately — a flat sprint arrival would have triggered a combat response before anyone could process what they were seeing. The creature walked into the sentry’s line of sight with its blade-arms folded, its sensory pits sweeping the barrier with the calm assessment of a predator entering new territory, and a human woman sitting on its back.

The sentry screamed.

The alarm went up. Not a formation-based alert — a human voice, raw and terrified, shouting the only word that mattered in the Harrowing: ”Charling! Charling at the barrier!”

The base erupted. Students poured from sleeping quarters, from mess stations, from the training alcoves where they’d been drilling cultivation forms they’d been drilling for six months because drilling was better than sitting still and thinking about where they were. Cultivation signatures blazed. Essence strikes charged in dozens of palms. The panicked, desperate response of four hundred people who’d been living behind a barrier for half a year and had just been told that the barrier had failed.

The first essence strike hit the ground ten meters in front of the mantis. A warning shot. The crater in the stone floor smoked. The second strike was aimed at the mantis’s head.

Jayde caught it.

The Inferno-grade essence bolt struck her palm and dispersed — the exoskeleton’s alloy gauntlet absorbing the energy, the sealed Crucible Core converting the impact into heat that bled off through the armor’s ventilation channels. The strike had been Grade 4, maybe Grade 5. Against the exoskeleton, it felt like catching a thrown stone.

”Hold your fire!” Jayde’s voice carried across the junction with the Commander’s register — flat, calm, loud enough to cut through panic without shouting. ”I’m a student. This creature is under my control. Lower your strikes.”

The barrier held. The students behind it didn’t lower their strikes. Forty faces stared at the woman on the Charling with the specific, frozen incomprehension of people whose world had just produced something their experience couldn’t categorize.

Then Jayde’s column arrived.

***

Seventy-three people walked out of the southern tunnel in formation. Crossbow-armed troops in the front, unarmed rescued students in the center, Meifen and her rear guard covering the back. They moved with the military discipline that six months of Jayde’s training had beaten into their bodies — even step, even spacing, crossbows at patrol carry, eyes forward.

They walked past the mantis without looking at it.

The students behind the barrier watched seventy-three people walk past a Charling the way you walk past furniture. The crossbow-armed troops didn’t flinch. The rescued students, some of whom had been terrified of the mantis three days ago, kept formation. The woman at the rear — Grade 5, hazel eyes, moving with the specific authority of someone who’d been second-in-command long enough that the role had become invisible — scanned the barrier with professional assessment and kept walking.

The essence strikes lowered. Not because anyone gave the order. Because the evidence in front of them was louder than the panic. Seventy-three people, alive, organized, armed with weapons nobody recognized, following a woman who rode a Charling and caught essence strikes with her bare hand.

The barrier opened.

***

The senior instructor’s name was Zhong Huian.

He met Jayde in the command chamber — a natural cavern behind the main barrier that the base’s original occupants had converted into a headquarters. Stone table. Essence-lamp lighting. Maps on the walls that showed the Outer Ring’s tunnel network in careful detail and nothing beyond it.

Zhong was mid-forties. Broad-shouldered. Entry Inferno-tempered cultivation with the weathered competence of a man who’d been teaching combat classes for fifteen years and had spent the last six months learning that teaching combat and commanding a survival operation were entirely different things. His hands shook. Not constantly — in the pauses between actions, when his body remembered what his discipline was trying to suppress. His eyes were dark brown, ringed with exhaustion, and when he looked at Jayde something cracked behind them.

”You’re a student,” he said. The tone said that’s not possible.

”Grade 2. Ashford. I was pushed in — I didn’t enter voluntarily. Someone wanted me dead. The Harrowing was supposed to do the job.” She let that land. ”It didn’t.”

Zhong’s jaw tightened. His hands pressed flat against the stone table. An Entry Inferno-tempered instructor knew exactly what it meant for a Grade 2 student to survive six months in the Mid Ring. It meant either the grade was a lie, or the student was something that grades couldn’t measure. But right now, the answer didn’t matter. What mattered was that someone had walked through his barrier with weapons and troops and a plan, and Zhong Huian was a man who hadn’t slept more than three hours at a stretch in six months, who’d buried eleven students, who’d been making decisions he was never trained to make with information he didn’t have, and who’d been holding four hundred people together through nothing but willpower and the refusal to let them see how close he was to breaking.

”And you’re riding a Charling,” he said. His voice cracked on the last word. Not fear. Something closer to disbelief. The specific, exhausted disbelief of a man who’d been praying for rescue and had it arrive in a form his mind couldn’t process.

”I tamed it in the Mid Ring. It responds to physical contact and proximity. It won’t attack humans. It won’t enter the base without my direction.”

Zhong sat down. Not the controlled seat of a commander taking his chair. The sudden, involuntary collapse of a man whose legs had stopped cooperating. His hands were shaking again.

”The weapons,” he said. ”Your people are carrying something I’ve never seen.”

”My design. Mechanical projectile weapons. They bypass Charling chitin armor by targeting the neural relay hub — a vulnerable junction between the head and thorax that cultivation strikes often miss because it’s a physical target, not an essence target.” She pulled a crossbow from her ring. Set it on the stone table. ”Two-hundred-pound draw weight. Effective range: twenty meters. Kill rate against Ravagers: over eighty percent with trained operators.”

Zhong picked up the crossbow. Tested the draw. His combat instructor’s hands read the mechanism with the unconscious fluency of someone who understood weapons. His eyebrows rose.

”You built these.”

”I built the first ones. My team builds them now. I have the materials and a fabricator to produce them at scale. Enough to arm every student in this base and the other five.”

”And you’re telling me this because?”

”Because an army is assembling in the Inner Ring.” She pulled a recording crystal from her ring and set it beside the crossbow. The crystal activated — a projection of what the mantis’s sensory data had captured at the Inner Ring boundary. The fifty-meter corridor. The carpet of chitin. The Siegebreaker columns. The Praetorians. The corruption-solvent carriers. The scale of it, rendered in amber light on the stone table, was undeniable.

Zhong watched the projection. His face went still.

”Every caste in the containment, from every ring, organized into a formation that has never existed in the Harrowing’s history,” Jayde said. ”Siegebreakers. Praetorians. Chorus coordinators. Millions of base-caste organisms. All converging on staging areas. When they finish assembling, they’ll move toward the seal.” She let that settle. ”The normal culling population that your bases were designed to handle is a fraction of what’s coming. Without crossbows, without pheromone barriers, without coordinated defense across all six bases, the protection perimeter will fail. The seal will be breached.”

Zhong set the crossbow down. His dark brown eyes held the expression of a man who wanted to dismiss what he was hearing and couldn’t, because the woman saying it had arrived on a tamed Charling with seventy-three armed troops and a weapon that worked.

”What do you need from me?” he asked. His voice was rough. Stripped. The voice of a man setting down a weight he’d been carrying alone for six months and feeling every muscle that had been holding it tremble as it released.

Jayde recognized the sound. She’d heard it in soldiers who’d held positions beyond their capacity. The specific relief of someone who’d been alone with an impossible job and had just been told they weren’t alone anymore.

”Your students,” Jayde said. ”Your tunnels. Your cooperation. I’ll provide the weapons, the training, and the plan. We have weeks before the horde arrives. Every day counts.”

”And the Charling?”

”Stays with me. It’s the most effective combat asset we have. Your students will get used to it.” She paused. ”Mine did. Within a week, they stopped seeing it as a Charling. They saw it as the reason their patrols came back alive.”

Zhong looked at the crossbow on the table. Looked at Jayde. Looked at the tunnel entrance where the mantis was visible, settled at the barrier’s edge, blade-arms folded, sensory pits oriented outward. Guarding. Then he looked past Jayde, at his own students — the four hundred people he’d kept alive for six months. They were gathered at the tunnel junctions, watching. Not watching him. Watching Jayde’s troops. Watching the crossbows. Watching the mantis that sat at their barrier like a guard dog the size of a horse.

His students wanted what this girl was offering. He could see it in their faces. The hunger for something beyond survival. The hunger for a plan.

”All right,” Zhong said. ”What’s the plan?”

***

Word traveled faster than runners.

By evening, students from Base Two had arrived — a group of thirty, sent by their instructor after a runner from Base One delivered Jayde’s message: weapons available, training offered, coordinated defense being organized. By the following morning, students from Bases Three and Four had appeared. Not sent. They’d come on their own. The rumor had reached them through the informal network that connected the six bases — whispered conversations, passed messages, the specific speed at which hope travels through people who’ve been without it.

A girl arrived at Base One on a Charling. She has weapons that kill Charlings. She has soldiers. She’s building an army.

They came. Not in tens. In hundreds. Grade 4 and Grade 5 students in their mid-twenties and early thirties, carrying whatever they’d managed to hold onto through six months of survival, walking through Outer Ring tunnels toward the base where someone had a plan. Some arrived in groups, the remnants of base populations that had fragmented under the stress of months without hope. Some arrived alone, solitary survivors who’d heard the rumor and walked toward it because walking toward something was better than sitting still.

A woman in her thirties arrived carrying a younger student on her back — the younger woman’s leg splinted with strips of torn cloth. A man in his late twenties arrived with a crossbow he’d taken from one of Jayde’s runners and had already figured out how to load. A pair of students arrived holding hands, neither willing to let go of the other, both willing to walk into whatever the girl with the Charling was offering because it couldn’t be worse than what they’d had.

By the end of the second day, Base One held over a thousand students. By the end of the fourth, runners confirmed that students from Bases Five and Six were on their way.

Jayde stood at the barrier and watched them arrive. Thin. Scared. Some of them injured, some of them barely cultivating, all of them carrying the hollow look of people who’d been surviving without purpose and had just been given one. They looked at Jayde’s crossbow-armed troops. They looked at the mantis at the gate. They looked at the girl who’d built both and decided to follow.

She’d walked into the Harrowing with nothing. She was going to walk out with an army.

The mantis pressed its head-plate against her palm. The warm, steady contact that meant I’m here.

”I know,” she said. ”Let’s get to work.”
