Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 563: Chapter 558: Somebody Holding On

Location:Above

Date/Time:3–5 Ashbloom 9943 AZI

Realm:Above all three

They stayed at the forward edge a good while after that, the pair of them, and said nothing else to each other, and that was the whole of what either of them had wanted out of the morning.

Behind them the cabin got on with it. Shenxin was converting something for Hulong, at length. Tianxin had worked out that she could put her shadow on the deck and move it, and had been doing that for a considerable time. Isha had not got up off the floor.

Somewhere in there the light changed.

It was not dramatic, and neither of them remarked on it — the amber went out of everything underneath them, degree by degree, and the cabin came down to whatever the stars were giving, and eight dragons standing in a ship they could not see found out what dark is when there is nothing in the way of it.

Then Eden said, ”Jayde,” and her voice had gone somewhere else entirely.

”I see it.”

”You do not. Look between.”

She looked between.

At first there was nothing, because the eye goes to objects, and there were three enormous objects in that sky. Then the ship came round another few degrees, the sun went off the dorsal plates, the last of the glare went out of the display layer, and the dark between the worlds stopped being empty.

Blue.

Thin lines of it. A great many — dozens, running between one world and the next in loose braided bundles, each one no thicker against that distance than a hair laid on a table, and all of them faint, and all of them the same cold clean blue as the inside of ice.

And nearly every one of them was dark.

That was the thing it took her some seconds to understand. They were all there, all of them, the whole structure still strung between the three bodies — but the light was only in a few. Most of the lines were ghosts, visible as a healed break is visible on a bone, present and closed and no longer carrying anything.

Between the Bright Crown and the Pale Shard, she counted seven lit.

Between the Pale Shard and the thing under their feet, she counted one.

One.

It ran down out of the gray-brown world in a long shallow curve that was not a straight line and had never been a straight line, and it came into the Lower Realm’s night side somewhere east of the obsidian range, and it was the thinnest lit thing in that entire sky.

One road left, and the Temple stands on the end of it and counts what comes down.

She had been told that sentence. She had written it in a tally and filed it on the third shelf and had understood it as an administrative fact about a checkpoint.

”Nine,” said Jayde. ”What am I looking at?”

There was a pause.

It was not a long pause. It was perhaps a second and a half, and it was the first one Nine had produced all morning, and every human on that ship noticed it and not one dragon did.

”I have no classification for that, Commander.”

”Guess.”

”I would rather not guess at something I am also measuring.” Another half-second. ”It is not radiating in any band I hold. It is not matter, as I am able to define matter. It is not a field with a source I can place. I have four hundred and six object categories and it is not in any of them, and I have been running for eleven hundred and forty years across six hundred systems and I have never been asked to look at anything like it.”

”Log it.”

”I have been logging it since the hull cleared.” A beat, and something that was not quite warmth and was not quite anything else. ”Thank you for asking me to.”

”They are under tension,” Eden said.

”What?”

”Look at the curve on them. Nothing hangs like that.” Eden had the datapad down and was not using it. ”That is not a road, Jayde, and it is not a structure, and it is not a natural formation. Roads do not sag. That is load.”

And Jayde, nine hundred miles above a world she had arrived at by dying, finally understood the shape of the thing she had spent four years working for.

Three bodies with no crust between them. No neck, no bridge, no isthmus, no arrangement of mass that has any business holding one orbit in a triangle — and running between them, thin, cold, blue, mostly dark, a structure that behaves like rope.

Something has been holding these three pieces together since the world broke.

Not a system. Not a law. Not the cold mechanical indifference she had been taught to expect from a universe and had rather liked. Somebody, with a grip on it, for a hundred thousand years, while the lines went dark one at a time and she did not let go of the ones that were left.

And the passages are not doors.

The passages are what it looks like when a thing that is failing has not yet let go.

Jayde put her hand flat on the frame of a seat that had been built on another world.

Every soul who had ever crossed between these three bodies had gone through a door somebody was holding open by main strength, and had paid that door what it asked, and had been written into a book on the other side.

And she had come up here in a machine.

A ship does not ask her.

It was the first thought she had had in four years that frightened her on somebody else’s behalf.

***

The probes went out over the next two days, because two days is what it took, and Jayde had budgeted for three.

She had said a while in the ninth minute of the flight and had meant a couple of hours by it, and had been overruled inside the first one by the only argument she has never been able to answer, which is the one where you already have a thing in your hands and are not going to get it back.

”We stay,” she said, somewhere over the ocean on the first evening. ”Nine, what have I got?”

”Consumables for nineteen days at this complement. Drive for a great deal more than that. I would like to bring the cells down to a maintenance cycle at some point, at your convenience and not at mine.”

”Two days.”

”Two days is not a strain on anything I am responsible for.”

***

The orbital set went first, because the orbital set was the thing she had built the ship for.

They are drums, four feet across, and they come off the rack on a cold gas push and drift clear and open along their long axis, and there is nothing dramatic about any of it, which is nearly the point. Nine of them. She had built twelve, and she was not putting twelve into a sky she had known for one day.

Six over the Lower Realm, on three different inclinations, because the eastern settled country is what she came for and because the pale coins do not care which way she flies over them.

Two over the Mid Realm.

One over the High.

”Justify the last two,” Heiteng said, not as a challenge. He had come forward and was standing at the back of the fore section with his arms folded, watching a drum unfold against the Pale Shard.

”Three reasons. The nests are not only here.” Jayde did not look up from the board. ”The second is that I have spent four years doing this with a map made of rumors, and there are two worlds up here I have no map of at all, and the day I need one will not be a day I have a year to prepare for.”

”And the third.”

She let it wait until the drum reported and the telltale came green.

”The third is that I can get there now.”

Heiteng did not move.

”Say the rest of it.”

”You know the rest of it.” She turned the seat round. ”You came down that road. You paid a Seal to do it, or you paid a pass, and either way somebody wrote you into a book at the bottom, and every single person who has ever gone between these three worlds has done it through one door that somebody else controls, and the Temple stands on the end of the last one and counts what comes down.” She put her hand flat on the arm of the seat. ”I do not need the door. I have never needed the door. I have been sitting on the answer for a year and using it as a reason to look at dirt from higher up.”

”How long?”

”To the Mid? Hours. Not days. Hours, Heiteng, and nobody writes anything down, and nobody takes a tier off anybody, and there is no man in white anywhere in it.” She turned back to the board. ”Which is why there are two probes over the Mid Realm and not one. One of them is looking for nests.”

”And the other?”

”The other is looking for somewhere flat, empty, four days from the nearest village, with no road to it.”

Heiteng stood there a long moment.

”A shelf of bare rock,” he said.

***

The deep set went out on the second day, and the deep set was the part she had not explained to anybody, because explaining it meant saying what it was for.

Four of them. Not drums — spindles, longer than a person, with a great deal more in them than a drum has, and each one carrying a drive that would take it out of this system at a rate that the entire vocabulary of three realms has no word for and that Shenxin gave up converting on.

”Where,” said Eden, at the board beside her.

”Staggered.” Jayde had the schematic up, the three worlds small at the middle and the ring of debris around them and four thin lines going out past all of it in four directions. ”First one sits just outside the belt. Second one at ten times that. Third at a hundred. Fourth goes out and keeps going, and I will not live to see what it sends back.”

”Why four distances?”

”Because I do not know what I am watching for.”

Eden waited.

”Every account we have says the same thing,” Jayde said. ”All of them. Every scroll in D’Aar’s library, every carving at the Academy, every story a grandmother on this continent tells about the Fourth. The sky broke open, and they were there. That is the sentence. Thousands of years of records and not one of them describes an approach.” She put two fingers on the outermost line. ”So either nobody ever saw one coming, or there was never anything to see.”

”And if there was.”

”If they come in ships, then they come through real distance at a real speed, and something out at a hundred times the belt will see them a long time before anything on the ground does. Not hours of warning. Years. Enough to move people. Enough to get the Academy underground and the eastern country emptied and every dragon on three worlds standing in the right place.” She moved her hand to the inner line. ”And if they do not come in ships — if the sky genuinely opens, if it is a door and not a journey — then I want a recording of the moment it happens from four different distances, because four viewpoints of a thing is the difference between a mystery and a measurement.”

”And if they are already here,” said Eden.

Jayde looked at her.

”Then the outer three see nothing,” she said, ”and the inner one sees everything, and I will know that too.”

***

The last spindle went at the sixteenth hour of the second day.

Everybody came forward for it, which Jayde had not asked for and did not object to. It came off the rack, drifted, turned, and then it lit — a hard white point that went from a thing beside the ship to a thing a very long way from the ship inside two seconds, and then was not visible at all, and the telltale went green and stayed green and started counting distance in a column that did not stop.

Shenxin watched the column for ninety seconds.

”It is going wrong,” he said.

”It is not.”

”That is more paces than there are paces.”

”There are more paces than you think there are,” said Jayde.

”How long until it stops?”

”It does not stop. The first three stop. That one does not, and it will be sending us things when everybody standing on this deck is dead, including Nine, and it will still be going.”

Shenxin sat down on the deck.

”Where is it going?” he said.

”Out.”

”To what.”

”To whatever is out there,” said Jayde, ”which is the entire point, and which nobody on this world has ever been able to ask.”

***

Coming down was slow, because coming down is slow, and there was no drama in it whatsoever, because everything on that ship had been taken apart and put back by the two people flying it.

They came down long and shallow over open water on the far side of the world. The heat built the way heat builds. Eden read the numbers off the datapad in a flat, unbroken murmur that never once stopped, and Jayde flew it with her hands very light, and nothing on that ship said one word out of place.

Reiko came and sat between the two forward seats for the whole descent with his chin on Jayde’s boot, which he had not done in two years.

Neither of them mentioned it.

”Shall I keep the view?” said Nine, somewhere over the ocean, in the tone of a thing offering a coat.

Jayde did not answer for a moment.

”Keep all of it,” she said.

”I have kept all of it.”

They put it back on the shelf at the tenth bell on the third morning, with the east going gray.

Nobody cheered.

Nobody moved. They sat and stood in a cooling hull and did not go near the hatch, and it went on being silent for some time, and then Hulong said, ”How long until we can do that again?” and everybody laughed, and that was the release, and after that the cabin was full of voices.

Jayde stayed in the seat.

Yinxin came forward and put a hand on her shoulder on the way past and did not say anything, which from Yinxin is a paragraph.

Heiteng stopped at the hatch and looked back down the cabin.

”You will want to be careful,” he said.

”With what?”

”With us.” He was not smiling. ”You have just shown a cabin full of people who have spent their lives fighting over a continent that it is a continent. I do not know yet what that is going to do to me, and I am very old. Xingteng is four hundred.” He ducked the hatch. ”Do it again anyway.”

***

Ashborn was the last, because Ashborn is always the last.

Jayde came aft down an empty cabin to where the great flat head was still turned to the port side, at nothing, at a shelf of rock and a dawn coming up over it, and put her hand on the plate above the sensory pits.

”We are down,” she said. ”It is finished. You can—”

It arrived before she had the sentence out.

Not a voice. There has never been a voice. It came up the road Ashborn is and went into her chest like heat going into cold hands, and it had no words in it and was not made of words and was the least ambiguous thing that had ever happened to her.

Thank you.

And under it, in the same breath, everything the thank you was made of: a hundred thousand years of stone, and a dark with no size to it, and never once, not one single time in all of that, anything to look at — and then amber, and black seam, and ocean, and a small pale moon going about its business, and blue threads hanging in the dark under their own weight.

Given. Not taken. Somebody had gone up and looked, on purpose, for her.

Jayde stood in the aft of a cooling hull with her hand on a charling’s head and her jaw set and did not make a sound.

”I said I would,” she said, when she could.

Ashborn did not move.

Then, after a moment, the great head turned back to the light coming up over nine miles of bare rock, and stayed there — and the two of them watched the sun come onto a world that Jayde had seen whole, and that the thing under the mountain had now seen whole, and that neither of them was going to allow anybody to take.

”Get me the passes,” Jayde said.
