Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 571: Chapter 566: The Chosen Door

Location:The field at Harl’s Bottom, ninth on the new board

Date/Time:4 Blazepeak 9943 AZI, Quenchday, before first light

Realm:Lower Realm

Nothing on that ground had rotted in nine thousand years, and Eden stopped at the edge of it and did not go on.

There was a tree down about forty paces in. It had come down a very long time ago — the break at the root was weathered smooth and gray — and it was lying across the pale ground exactly as it must have lain the morning it fell, bark on, every branch still where the branch had been, not one inch of it softened. No moss. No fungus in the bark. Nothing that eats wood had ever come to eat it, because nothing that eats anything had been alive in that ground since before the calendar.

”I have read it,” Eden said. ”I have read every report you have written since Voidmarch, and I have written it into my own.”

”I know.”

”It is different.”

”It is always different,” said Jayde, and waited, because there was no hurrying the first one and she was not going to pretend there was.

***

Harl’s Bottom was ninth on the new board, and nobody who lived within a day of it could have told you why the old name had stuck.

A farm had been there once. There was a line of stones where a wall had run and a flat place that had been a threshing floor, and the whole of it had been ploughed round rather than through for so many generations that the ploughing had worn a shallow ditch along the edge of the dead ground, a perfect circle cut by nothing but people declining to go further. Harl, whoever he had been, was not remembered for anything else.

It was not large. That was the point of it and Jayde had argued the point for three evenings against people who wanted Ardh.

Ninth on the board. A little under eight hundred paces across, which put the chamber on Eden’s scaling somewhere between the one they had killed at Brack Hollow and the one they had killed at the Ossuary Bend. Not rising. Nobody within a day’s walk to see a dragon or hear anything they should not. And under it, if the arithmetic held, something they had already done sixty-five times, done once more in a way they had never done it.

You do not test a new door and a new shield on the largest thing on the continent, she had said on the third evening, to a table that had wanted to hear something else. You test them where, if they fail, the failure is one you have survived before.

Nobody had liked it. Nobody had been able to answer it.

***

Zhi went out onto the dead ground first, low, at Eden’s heel and then ahead of it.

The little serpent had been the deep blue of a calm day all the way from the Pavilion entrance, and at the ditch line the color went out of the scales so abruptly that Eden’s hand came up without her deciding to move it.

Not white. White was fear. This was something Jayde had only seen twice — a cold, dim steel, the color of a knife left out overnight.

[It is cold here.]

”I know,” said Eden, very quietly.

[It is cold all the way in.] A pause, the scales still going duller. [And then it is warm in the middle.]

”How warm.” 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

[Like inside a person.]

Eden did not say anything to that.

”That is correct,” said Jayde. ”That is exactly correct, and it is always exactly that, and I have never once heard anybody put it better.”

[I know,] said Zhi, with the total unbothered certainty of a very small thing that had been asked a question and answered it, and went on across the gray ground toward the middle, where it was warm.

***

The ward stones went in at the fourth bell, twelve of them in a ring, keyed now to anybody carrying Jayde’s token.

That had been Takara’s grievance since the first month of it, and he had not let it go. The first set had been keyed to Jayde alone, which was an error made in the first month by a woman who had not yet understood how many other people were going to be standing inside the ring, and it had locked him out of a clearing at the worst possible moment.

He walked the circle once as the last stone set, midnight black against the gray, the white-gold running along his mane in slow ropes, and stopped at each stone just long enough to feel it take him.

They know me, he said, in the flat, tired register that meant he was pleased.

”They have known you since Ashwhisper.”

I am confirming it. A thing that locked me out once will do it again the first time it thinks nobody is checking.

Reiko went round after him the other way, at the size he used for moving quickly, and checked each one as well, and neither of them mentioned that they were doing it twice.

***

Hulong opened the door at the fifth bell, and it was the first door anybody had ever chosen.

Six months of throats. Six months of finding the one place where the rock had come down on its own and following it in, because that was the only way in anybody could find, and it had never once been a good way. A subsidence throat is the rock telling you where it is weakest. Every clearing they had ever done had begun by walking into the least stable ground on the whole field, in the dark, on the assumption that whatever came up it next would be worse.

Eden had put a mark on the board a hundred and forty paces off the throat, on the north side. Across every pass since Ashbloom the ground there had not moved by so much as a finger’s width while the field around it sank; and at the rim above it the ploughing had worn deepest of anywhere on the circle, which is what happens when generations of men find the one stretch of edge that never gives underfoot and keep coming back to it.

That is where the roof is thickest, she had written in the margin. If you are going to cut a door, cut it where the ceiling is still a ceiling.

Hulong walked out to the mark in human form and stood on it for a while, and then shifted, and put his head down, and went into the ground.

He does not make it look like work. That had been the thing Jayde had never been able to explain to anybody who had not watched it — that dragons do not dig so much as decline to be stopped, and that a shaft opened by a dragon who has decided on it has the smooth, clean, slightly offended quality of a thing that did not think the ground should have been there in the first place.

It took him until a little after the sixth bell.

He came back up covered in pale dust, and shifted, and sat down on the edge of the shaft with his forearms on his knees and his hair full of the stuff, and looked at Jayde, and did not say anything for a moment.

”It held,” he said.

”The whole way.”

”The whole way. Two hundred and thirty paces down to the chamber roof, and I went through the roof at the thin place Eden marked, and it held round me like a well.” He was not smiling, quite. ”Nothing came down. Not the first hundred feet, not the last. I have never once since Voidmarch come out of a hole in this ground without something having come down on me somewhere.”

”And the throat?”

”A hundred and forty paces south, and they are all coming up it.” Hulong wiped his face and made it worse. ”I could hear them going past me the other way, in the rock, on my way down. Heading for the old door. They do not know we have a new one.”

***

Isha had been silent since they left the Pavilion, which is not unusual, and spoke as they came to the lip of the shaft, which is.

”The field is up.”

Eden stopped with one foot on the first cut step.

She had been building it since the second nest. Federation work at the root — a psionic lattice, the kind the fleet had used to keep hull breach from becoming crew loss — and no possible way to power it on a world that ran on something else entirely, until Isha had looked at the schematic in Ashwhisper and said, in the dry voice that means he has already solved a problem and would like credit for having been patient about it, you are trying to put water through a pipe. Put it through a formation instead.

It had held for four minutes at Brack Hollow. Eleven at the Ossuary Bend. It had never once held for forty, and nobody had ever pretended that forty was anything but the number.

”It is holding,” said Isha. ”It is holding cleanly, and there is nothing in it that I do not like, and I would like it understood that I said the same at the Ossuary Bend and was wrong at the eleventh minute.”

”Understood,” said Eden.

”I am not saying it to discourage you. I am saying it so that when it holds past the eleventh minute, you will know I was frightened, and will know what it cost me to have been.”

That was more than Isha had said about his own feelings in all the time Jayde had known him, and Jayde heard Eden take a breath on the step below her and let it go without comment.

***

The descent was two hundred and thirty paces of smooth dragon-cut rock, spiraling, and for the first sixty of them it was empty.

That was new too. Every clearing Jayde had ever led began with the descent under contact — worms moving through the fissures in the drained rock, not hunting, not in formation, simply present, in numbers that rose with every turn until by the lower third the walls were moving. You came down a throat through the thick of the traffic, because the throat was where the traffic went.

This shaft had never been anywhere the worms went.

At the sixtieth pace the first of them came through the wall.

It was not a strike. It was a finger-length thing the color of wet slate that had been moving through a crack in the rock as it had moved through cracks in that rock for nine thousand years, and had arrived without meaning to in a smooth-sided hole that had not been there that morning. It came out a hand’s width, and turned in the air, blind, and began, with no hurry at all, to come toward Eden.

It met the field about a pace from her face.

There was no flash. There was no sound. It simply stopped — as a thing stops when it has come to the end of a surface it did not know was there — and hung, turning slowly, pressing, and then drew back into its crack and was gone.

Eden looked at the place where it had been for rather a long time.

”Six months,” she said.

”Keep walking,” said Jayde, gently, and Eden did.

***

By the hundred and seventieth, the walls were moving.

Not everywhere. Not as a throat moves, where the whole face is one slow wet braid, and you walk down the middle of it with your shoulders in. Here it was the cracks — every fissure in the drained rock had something in it now, and every something had come out a hand’s width into the new shaft and found the field and stopped, and the result was a long spiral corridor lined on both sides with thousands of blind gray filaments turning gently in the air a pace from anybody’s skin, feeling for a way in and not finding it.

Proximity drains. That had not changed and never would. Jayde could feel it in the back of her hands and the hinge of her jaw, the slow tidal pull of a very large number of things that wanted what she was, and she went into rotation discipline the way she always did, without thinking about it, pulling back and letting Takara and Reiko carry the front of the line for forty paces while she breathed.

But nothing was touching anybody.

That was the whole of it. Six months of descents and nobody in that party had once come down a hundred paces without something having to be burned off a boot or cut off a sleeve. And they were a hundred and seventy paces into a shaft lined with the things, all of them reaching, and Ashborn was walking down the center of it with his blade-arms folded, unhurried, and had not had to raise one of them.

Ashborn did not like that.

Jayde could not have said how she knew. There had never been a sound, never once, since Frostforge. But the great flat head kept turning to the walls, to the filaments hanging just out of reach on the far side of a thing he could not see, and there was something in the set of the forward chitin that looked, to a woman who had spent seven months reading it, exactly like being told you may not eat.

”Not yet,” Jayde said to him, quietly. ”Wait for the room.”

***

The warmth reached them at the two hundred and twentieth pace.

It came up the shaft like breath. Blood-warm, and wet, and faintly sweet under it in a way that had nothing to do with anything alive on that surface, and Eden stopped on the step with one hand on the rock and the other at her throat and did not say anything at all.

Then they came through the roof into the chamber, and she saw it.

The knot filled a space the size of a granary. Worms from finger-length to twice a man’s height, wound into one braid that moved all the time and went nowhere, wet slate in the light Takara was throwing off his mane, and the sound of it was a sound Jayde had stopped hearing somewhere around the fifth nest and heard now, again, because Eden was hearing it — a soft continuous whisper, like wind in a field of standing grain, made by eight thousand bodies sliding over each other in the dark.

And beyond it, at the far wall, where the rock stopped being rock, the face.

Pale. Faintly luminous. Moving — not the worms’ slow, undirected churn but something else entirely, a long rise and a long fall, far too slow for breathing and too regular for anything else.

Eden had written it up a dozen times from other people’s reports and had put it on a board in chalk.

She stood on the last step of a dragon’s shaft with Zhi gone warm-bright against her ankle and looked at a thing six months of her own words had not come close to, and Jayde watched her understand — as every person who has ever seen it understands, without anybody having to tell them — that she was standing inside something’s body.

”Oh,” she said.

That was all.

Jayde put a hand on her shoulder and left it there.

***

Yinxin went past them both and down onto the floor of the chamber.

She did not look at the knot. She never did. Instead she walked round the edge of it, in the gap between the braid and the wall, with the filaments turning toward her as she passed and stopping at the field and turning away, and her hair coming loose from its tie as it always did, and she did not hurry and did not slow, and she came to the pale face on the far side of the chamber and put both her hands flat on it.

The rise and the fall went through her. Jayde saw it go through her shoulders.

Then Yinxin stopped moving.

It is a thing you can see from across a room. A living person is never still — there is breath, and weight shifting from one foot to the other, and the hundred small corrections of a body holding itself up — and a woman casting the weave is still in a way that nothing living is, as though whatever holds her up has gone somewhere else to do something more important.

”Isha,” said Jayde.

”The field is holding.”

”Eden.”

”Marked.” Eden’s voice had come back from wherever it had gone and was entirely level. ”Contact at the face. Clock is running.”

The knot in the middle of the chamber stopped whispering.

It did not happen all at once. It began at the side nearest Yinxin and went outward, a stillness moving through eight thousand bodies like a wave through standing grain, and when it reached the far side of the braid the whole mass was motionless, and every blind head in that room was turned the same way.

Toward the light, and the noise, and the one thing in the chamber that had just started to hurt it.

Then they came.
