Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 572: Chapter 567: Past the Eleventh Minute

Location:The chamber under Harl’s Bottom

Date/Time:4 Blazepeak 9943 AZI, Quenchday, past the sixth bell

Realm:Lower Realm

The sound that came back was not louder. It was faster.

Eight thousand bodies that had spent nine thousand years sliding over each other in the dark were not sliding any more, and the noise that makes is not a noise any throat on Doha was built to hold in the ear. Wet. Continuous. A wave coming up a shingle beach and never reaching the top of it.

The braid came across the chamber floor like water poured from a height.

At a pace from the line, it met the field.

***

A single filament had stopped at the field on the stair. A single filament is a thing a pace from your face, turning, pressing, and withdrawing.

This was not that.

The front of the mass hit the field, and the field bowed. Jayde saw it — not the field, which cannot be seen, but the shape of the mass against it, a long curved wall of wet slate bodies pressed flat against nothing, stacking, climbing over each other to press harder, the whole face of it bellying inward toward the line by a hand’s width and then two.

”Isha.”

”It is load.” His voice came from the stair behind her, level, the voice of a man describing the weather. ”It is doing exactly what it was built to do. It does not stop a wall. It halves one.”

Half of eight thousand is a number, and the number came through.

It came through the way water comes through a dam that is holding — not in a breach but in a seep, everywhere at once, filaments working through the places where the field was thinnest under the weight, one here and three there and then a dozen at the southern end where the floor dipped. None of them fast. None of them aimed. Blind wet heads coming through a thing they could not see, into the light, toward the only living things in a room that had held nothing living for nine thousand years.

Takara met the first of them with his mane.

The white-gold went out along the line in a sheet, and the smell came off it at once — ozone and something under it like scorched hair, and the filaments it touched did not burn so much as stop being, and the dozen at the southern dip became nothing and the next dozen came through behind them.

”Line,” said Jayde, and the line formed.

***

It was four, and a charling, and a field.

That was the whole of it, and she had known it would be the whole of it since the third evening. Takara at the south where the floor dipped, and the seep was worst. Reiko at the north, at a size nobody in that room had seen him use before, black against the slate with the silver of him gone to a cold point in each eye. Jayde in the center with her back to Yinxin, close enough to hear her not breathing. Hulong at the old throat.

And Ashborn, who was not the line.

Ashborn was the thing in front of it.

Ashborn had gone forward the moment the braid came apart and had not stopped at the field, because the field had been keyed to Jayde’s token and Ashborn carried it, and he went out through it into the front of the mass as though walking into a river.

Jayde had watched him eat them at every nest since the first. Whatever came at the line, whatever came at her — taken, swallowed, and the blade-arms back up for the next, the whole of it done standing still in front of somebody. He had never once gone out for them. There had always been somebody for him to hold.

Now the field was holding, and there was nobody for him to stand in front of, and he went out into the middle of them with nothing to guard at all.

And he ate.

It was not what she had seen before. He was not taking what came. He was gathering, bringing food to his mouth with both arms at once, over and over, faster than anything that size should move, and the mass around him thinned as a crowd thins round a fire. He was not killing them. He was consuming them, and the ones he did not reach turned from the field toward him, because he was bigger and warmer and nearer than anything behind it, and that was a hundred fewer pressing on the line, and then two hundred.

He is taking the weight, said Takara, somewhere to the south, flat and tired and not stopping.

”I know.”

He is taking a great deal of the weight.

”I know,” said Jayde again, and burned a filament off the field two feet from her own face, and did not look at the thing she was beginning to be frightened of.

***

”Four minutes,” said Eden.

Eden was on the bottom step of the stair, where the field was thickest, with Zhi gone warm-bright against her ankle and the datapad on her knee, and her voice was the voice she used in the medical bay on a bad night. Not calm. Level, which is a different thing and harder.

”Six.”

The old throat opened at the seventh.

Hulong had been standing at the mouth of it since they came down, because Jayde had put him there and had told him why. Every worm that had gone up the throat that morning — away from a dragon cutting through the rock, toward the only door they had ever known — was in the throat, and the throat came down into the chamber on the south side, and a nest does not care which way it is facing when something starts to hurt it.

They came down it all at once.

Not the wall. A rope. A long braided column of them pouring down out of the dark into the chamber’s southern corner, behind Takara, behind the dip where the seep was worst, and the first of them was already in the room when Hulong met it.

He had shifted. He filled the throat mouth with his body like a cork in a bottle, and the rope hit him, and Jayde heard the sound he made — not pain, not yet, a grunt of pure effort, a dragon setting his whole weight against a thing that has no weight of its own and simply keeps coming.

”How many.”

”Enough,” said Hulong, through his teeth, ”that I would like you not to ask me that again until it is over.”

***

”Nine,” said Eden. ”Ten.”

The field was holding.

It was holding, and it was bowing, and the seep was steady, and Jayde had found the rhythm of it. That is the only thing that makes the middle of a clearing survivable. Not strength. Rhythm. The filaments came through in a pattern that was not a pattern, because nothing in that mass was deciding anything, but it had a pulse to it that followed the weight — press, thin, seep — and a woman who had spent six months in chambers could feel the press coming through the soles of her feet and be at the thin place before the seep started.

And every one of them drained her a little.

Proximity. It does not stop. She could feel it in the back of her hands and the hinge of her jaw and now in the long muscles of her back, the slow tidal draw of a very large number of things that wanted what she was, and it had been manageable on the stair and it was not manageable now. It never was, at the tenth minute. That was why rotation was doctrine.

”Reiko.”

[Here.]

”Take the center.”

He came across without a word and she went back to the stair, to the thickest part of the field, and stood there with her hands on her knees and breathed for thirty counts, and it was not enough, and she went back.

”Eleven,” said Eden.

Nobody said anything.

Behind Jayde, very quietly, Isha let out a breath she had not known he was holding.

”It is past the eleventh minute,” he said.

”Noted,” said Eden, and her voice did not change at all, and Jayde did not have to look at her to know what her face was doing.

***

The middle twenty minutes are where people die.

Every account says so. Every report Jayde had ever written said so, and she had written it, each time, as you write a thing you have been lucky about. There is no way to shorten them. There is no way to abort, because aborting is interrupting and interrupting kills the caster, and the caster was standing four paces behind her with her hands flat on a living wall and her face gone somewhere else entirely.

At the sixteenth minute the rotation broke.

It was not a mistake. It was arithmetic. Four in a line meant one of them resting and three holding, and the throat meant one of the three was not in the line at all, so it was two, and a charling out in front who had stopped coming back toward them at the fourteenth minute and was simply out there, in the thick of it, feeding.

Takara went too long.

Jayde saw it happen and could not reach it. He had been at the southern dip since the fourth minute without once coming back to the stair, because every time he went to come back the seep at the dip came up behind him, and he was burning, the mane going in sheets, and the sheets were getting shorter.

At the seventeenth minute his mane guttered.

It did not go out. It dropped — the white-gold going from a sheet to a spatter for the length of one breath — and in that breath a filament came through the thin place at the dip and touched his left foreleg.

Contact is not a strike. It is tropism. A filament touching living essence roots into it as a root finds water, and there is no pulling it out once it has rooted and nobody has ever survived it in the field.

Takara did not pull it out.

He put everything he had left into that one leg.

The light that came off him was not a sheet. It was a single point, white, at the place where the filament met his fur, and the smell was worse than anything Jayde had smelled in that room, and the filament was gone before it had finished rooting and so was a great deal of the fur and a great deal of the skin under it, and Takara made a sound that she had never once heard him make in all the time she had known him.

Then he was back at the dip, on three legs, and the mane was up again.

Nobody had ever done that before. Jayde would think about that later, for a very long time. In the moment, there was no room for it at all.

Do not, he said, before she could say anything. Do not. Hold your line.

She held her line.

***

”Twenty-six,” said Eden.

Jayde was at the edge of it now.

The edge she knew. Twice she had been to it, in the Harrowing, in the dark, with nothing coming, and she knew the shape of it as you know a step in your own house: a grayness at the side of the vision, a coldness that started in the hands and did not stay there, and a thin high sound that was not in the room. Voidforge collapse is not a metaphor. It is the floor of what a person is, and she could feel it under her.

She went to the stairs and breathed, and it did not help, and she went back.

”Twenty-nine.”

Hulong’s grunts had stopped being effort some time ago and had become something else. He was still in the throat mouth. He was going to be in the throat mouth until it ended or he did, and the sound he made now came every few seconds with a regularity that was worse than anything he could have shouted.

Reiko had not made a sound at all.

Ashborn was out in the middle of the chamber in what was left of the mass, and there was a great deal less of the mass than there had been, and Jayde did not let herself think about how much of it was inside him.

”Thirty-three.”

Behind her, Yinxin moved.

Not her body. Her body did not move and would not until it was over. It was the face. The long, slow rise and fall of the pale wall under her hands, which had been going on the whole time, a rhythm too slow for breathing — it caught. It hesitated at the top of a rise, as a breath catches before a word, and stayed there.

”Thirty-five.”

And then it landed.

***

There is no sound when the weave lands.

That is the thing Jayde had never been able to put in a report and had stopped trying. You expect one. After thirty-five minutes of that noise, the body expects the end of it to be the loudest thing it has ever heard, and instead the whole of it simply stops — every worm in the chamber, every worm in the throat, every filament in every crack of the drained rock for two hundred paces in every direction, all at once and together, the way a held note stops when the singer runs out of breath.

Eight thousand bodies went still.

They did not fall. They did not burn or dissolve or do anything dramatic at all. They stopped, and were dead, and the mass that had been pressed against the field sagged very slowly away from it like a wet cloth sliding down a wall, and lay on the chamber floor in a heap that was never going to move again.

The warmth went out of the room.

It went slowly. The pale face under Yinxin’s hands finished its long rise, and began its long fall, and as it fell the light in it went down, not out but down, and the blood-warmth of the chamber went with it, and the air on Jayde’s face was the air of an ordinary cave, cool and damp and faintly mineral, for the first time since they had come through the roof.

”Thirty-six minutes,” said Eden, ”and forty seconds.”

Nobody answered her.

Yinxin took her hands off the wall.

It was done very carefully, one and then the other, and then she stood there with her arms at her sides and her hair all the way down out of its tie, and swayed, and Jayde was across the four paces between them before she had decided to move and had her by both arms before her knees went.

They went.

Jayde went down with her and sat on the chamber floor with a silver queen’s weight against her chest and her own hands shaking so hard she could not have held a cup, and Yinxin’s head came round slowly, and the golden eyes found hers.

”The field,” Yinxin said.

”It held.”

”All of it?”

”All of it.” Jayde heard her own voice come out wrong and let it. ”Nothing touched you. Not one. Not for thirty-six minutes.”

Yinxin looked at her for a long moment.

Then she closed her eyes, and put her forehead down against Jayde’s collarbone, and said nothing else at all.

***

On the stairs, Isha had sat down.

Eden had not. She was still on the bottom step with the datapad on her knee, writing, very small, and Jayde could see from across the chamber that her hand was not steady and that she was not going to stop writing until it was.

Takara was lying on his side at the southern dip with his left foreleg held off the floor and Reiko standing over him at full size, not doing anything, just standing, and the white-gold running along Takara’s mane in short slow pulses like a heartbeat.

Hulong came out of the throat on foot, in human form, and sat down on the floor of the chamber with his back against the rock and his arms around his knees, and put his head down, and stayed there.

And Ashborn had gone to the far corner.

Not feeding. There was nothing left to feed on that was alive. He was in the deepest corner of the chamber, where the rock came down low over a hollow in the floor, crouched so small that Jayde had to look twice to be sure the dark shape against the wall was him, with the blade-arms folded close and the great flat head turned in toward the stone.

”Ashborn,” Jayde said.

Nothing.

Seven months, and there had never once been a time Jayde spoke that name, and he did not turn.

He did not turn now.
