Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 561: Chapter 556: The Bright Crown

Location:Above

Date/Time:3 Ashbloom 9943 AZI, Temperday, first light

Realm:Above the Lower Realm

Sound came back before anybody’s voice did.

Not from outside. There is nothing outside. It was the hull ticking as the sun came onto plates that were still there and simply could not be seen, and the cells cycling somewhere under the deck, and a dozen people remembering that breathing is a thing you do out loud.

”You may touch it,” said Nine, to the four of them standing with their hands held carefully against their sides. ”There is nothing to touch, but the plate behind the display layer is at cabin temperature and has been since the reactor came up. You will not be harmed.”

Nobody moved.

”It has not been cold,” Nine added helpfully, ”since about eight hundred years before either of the Commander’s species learned to smelt iron.”

”That is not true,” said Eden.

”It is an approximation.”

”It is a lie, Nine.”

”It is a lie,” Nine agreed, warmly, ”and they have put their hands out.”

They had.

***

”We are stable,” Jayde said, to the cabin and to nobody. ”Nine, log it. We are in orbit, and we are going to stay in it a while.”

”Logged, Commander.”

She got up out of the seat and went aft, past seven dragons standing on nothing, to the place where the Pavilion’s entrance opens onto the cargo space, and put her hand on it.

”Come out,” she said. ”All of you. Now, while it is quiet.”

***

Isha came out first, because Isha always assesses the door before he comes through it.

Nine tails and the golden eyes, and ninety-eight thousand years of a creature who has spent almost all of them inside things — inside an artifact, inside a seal, inside a soul-space with a roof on it — and he came up through the hatch onto a deck with no walls and stopped exactly where he was and did not take another step.

He looked up.

Then he looked down, past his own feet, through a floor that was still entirely there and could not be seen, at a world.

”I have been inside something,” he said, at last, ”for ninety-eight thousand years.”

Jayde did not answer that, because there was nothing to put next to it.

”An artifact. Then a seal. Then a seal inside a seal. Then your soul, which has a roof on it, and which I have been grateful for every single day.” The nine tails had not moved at all. ”I have not stood in the open since before there was anybody on this world who could have told me not to.”

He looked down again, through a floor that was still there and could not be seen.

”It is very large,” said Isha, ”and I am very small, and I had forgotten both.”

***

And then the wyrmlings came up out of the Pavilion and the entire solemnity of the morning ended.

Tianxin got out first and went straight up, which is what Tianxin does, and discovered at a height of about four feet that the deck had a ceiling on it that she could not see, and rebounded off it with a noise of purest outrage, and was caught by Hulong.

Shenxin walked to the edge of the deck grating, stopped where the floor stopped looking like a floor, put one forefoot out onto nothing, and watched it hold. Then he put his weight on it. Then he stood there, slate-gray and entirely still, working something out.

”How far down is it?” he said.

”Nine hundred and four miles,” said Nine.

Shenxin’s head came round.

”How fast are we going.”

”Seventeen thousand and four hundred miles in an hour.”

”How long to go round?”

”Ninety-four minutes.”

”How many times have you been round.”

”Round this world? Twice. We are in the third.”

Shenxin’s head went to one side.

”Round a world,” he said.

”Four hundred and nine thousand, two hundred and six,” said Nine, ”about forty-one other worlds. Today is the first of those figures that includes this one.”

”Name them,” said Shenxin.

Nine named them.

It took a little over a minute, and it was the only stretch of that whole morning in which nobody interrupted anything, and at the end of it there were forty-one words standing in that cabin that had never been said on Doha in the history of Doha, and not one soul aboard who could have found a single one of them on any map in three realms.

”Again,” said Shenxin.

”Of course,” said Nine, and did it again.

Shenxin sat down and did not say anything else for six minutes, and Jayde watched a three-year-old dragon and a thousand-year-old machine discover each other and understood, with some foreboding, that she was going to be hearing about this for years.

Huaxin did not ask anything.

She went out past the grating on her belly, pearl-cream against nothing at all, and laid herself flat on a floor she could not see with all four legs spread, and put her chin down, and looked at the world with her amber eyes from about an inch above it.

She stayed like that for the whole of it.

Nobody moved her.

***

The fields were the second thing.

Jayde had gone up for them. That was the entire justification, written out and argued for over three evenings in Voidmarch, and she had spent a year and four medical stations’ worth of build priority on it, and she looked for them now as a person looks for a name on a list.

They were not hard to find.

They showed east of the range as pale coins scattered across settled country, each one flat and round and the wrong color against ground that had a color, and there was no instrument involved, and no interpretation, and no argument about a bad harvest three years ago. They were simply there, the way a stain is there on a cloth.

She counted fourteen before she made herself stop counting.

Six months. Six months of riding to them one at a time on the word of a herdsman or a tax roll or a village that had stopped growing anything, of sending Meifen out for three weeks to confirm a rumor that turned out to be a drainage fault, of arguing over which to take next on evidence that was always somebody’s memory. Sixty-five closed. She had never once, in all of it, seen two of them at the same time.

From here, a child could rank them.

Something went through her that she did not have a name for and did not look at, because the cabin was full behind her and one of the people in it was Eden, who would see it.

”Nine,” Eden said. ”Every field you can resolve. Diameters, best fit, now, and give me the error.”

Nine gave her fourteen numbers and fourteen errors.

Eden went down the column twice with the datapad on her knee and her mouth slightly open, and it was not the sky doing that to her.

”It scales,” she said.

”Say it properly.”

”It scales. Across two orders of magnitude, on fourteen sites, four of them ones we have never stood on — and it does not wobble, Jayde, it does not wobble anywhere.” She turned the datapad round for no reason, since Jayde could not read it from that seat, and then turned it back. ”Four years. Four years of somebody’s cousin says the barley failed, and I have just measured the whole eastern country in nine seconds.”

Behind them, a cabin full of people stood in a ship they could not see and looked at a world for the first time in the history of their species.

Neither of the two in the forward seats had glanced up once.

That was not discipline. It was that a window onto vacuum is not, to either of them, an event — they had both spent more of their lives above atmospheres than under them, and Eden rather more than Jayde — and a column of fourteen numbers that agrees with itself is the most exciting thing that had happened to either of them in four years.

***

Then Hulong said, ”What is that one?” and the cabin turned starboard.

The Pale Shard stood off the starboard quarter at a distance the eye refuses to accept, and it was not a moon.

That was the whole of it, and it landed on every dragon in that cabin at once. All their lives, and their fathers’ lives, and every night any of them had ever flown under: two great discs and three small ones, and the two great ones had names and phases and festivals and fishermen’s superstitions, and children were told what they were.

Children were told wrong.

It was gray-brown. It had land on it — landmasses, with edges, lying against seas so dark they read as holes — and white at both poles where the ice sheets sat, and cloud in long combed bands across the middle of it, and it was turning, slowly and obviously, in the same way the thing under their feet was turning.

”There are people on that,” said Xingteng.

”Nine,” said Jayde. ”Survey it.”

”Running.”

It took four seconds, which Jayde knew to be four seconds of politeness, because the answer had been available in rather less.

”Mass, zero point nine one against the body beneath us. Rotation, twenty-eight hours and some. Atmosphere is breathable and colder and thinner in the free water bands than this one. Surface water, sixty-one percent. Substantial polar ice at both ends, in retreat at the northern. Biomass heavy and broadly distributed, with the deep forest cover you can see through the middle latitudes running to something over half the land area.” A pause of no length at all. ”Concentrated settlement signatures consistent with a population between four and six billion. Best figure five point one. Shall I refine it?”

”Refine it when we are not busy.”

”Of course.”

Xingteng had turned right round.

”It knows that,” she said. ”From here. It looked at a world for four seconds, and it knows that.”

”It is a transport,” said Jayde. ”It carries things. That is all it has ever been for.” She was not being modest, and she heard how it landed and did not soften it. ”That is the equipment you get in a thing that carries things. A survey ship would have given me the same answer in a tenth of a second and then told me what was under the ice.”

”And it has guns,” said Eden, without looking up from her column.

”It has two, they are for rocks, and they have been locked out since the day I brought the reactor up and they are staying locked out.”

”I have looked at it every night of my life.”

”I know.”

”I have steered by it.” She had her hand out in front of her at nothing, at the place where a wall had been. ”My mother taught me the phases of it before I could hold my own weight in the air. The Open Eye. The Half-Lidded. We have a word for the nine days when it opens, and we have had that word for—” She stopped. ”It is a country.”

”It is a country.”

”Then what have we been counting?”

Nobody answered him, and after a moment Yinxin said, without turning round, ”Days. We have been counting days. There is no shame in it. A thing can be a calendar and a country at the same time, and we were not wrong about the calendar.”

”You are both using its sky name,” said Isha.

Jayde turned in her seat.

”Say that again.”

”The Pale Shard.” He had not moved from where he had sat down. ”That is what it is called when you are looking at it. It is what a fisherman on the Lower Realm calls it and what a farmer in the High Realm calls it, and neither of them has ever stood on it. The people who live on it do not call it that. They call it the Mid Realm, because it is the middle one, and they have called it that for so long that most of them do not know it has another name at all.”

”And that one?” Hulong, at the port side, without turning.

”The Bright Crown is a sky name too. Its people say the High Realm.” A pause. ”Mid. High. Lower. Three words that describe where a thing is in relation to the speaker, which is a very practical way to name a world and a very poor way to remember one. The old names are still in use, and nobody knows they are old. That is generally how it goes.”

Jayde looked down through a floor she could not see.

”Then what is this one called?”

Isha did not answer straight away, and when he did, he said it carefully, in the manner of a man setting something down that he has carried a long way.

”From up there, the Cinder. The Far Ember, in the High Realm, which is older and more polite.” He let that sit. ”But you are not asking me what they call it. You are asking me what it is called.”

”Yes.”

”It has no name, Commander. Not one of its own. Neither has the Mid, and neither has the High.” He turned the golden eyes up to the blazing thing on the port bow and then down again, through the deck, at the amber world. ”Names are for telling a thing apart from other things. There was nothing to tell these apart from. There was one of it, and the whole of it was called Doha, and every one of those three pieces is still called Doha and always has been, and every soul on all three of them has spent a hundred thousand years arguing about which of the three is which while standing on the answer.”

Nobody said anything.

”What do you call them?” said Eden, after a while.

”I call them Doha,” said Isha. ”I am very old, and I am permitted to be tiresome about it.”

She was still facing the other way.

Yinxin had been facing the other way since the ship came round.

***

Because the Bright Crown was off the port bow.

They had gone up in the dark on purpose. Jayde had waited nine days for a sky with nothing in it, and had got one, and had lifted off a black plain under a black sky — and the first thing nine hundred miles does to a person is move the horizon somewhere else entirely. Everything the world had been hiding behind its own curve was simply there, and had been there the whole time, and the emptiest night of the month turned out to have all of it in it.

It was enormous, and it was closed.

Jayde had known what she was going to see. She had read Isha’s diagrams and Eden’s models and the whole thin harvest of everything anybody on this world had ever written down about the sky, and she had known, as a fact, that the High Realm’s surface is not visible from anywhere.

Knowing it is not the same as watching a woman look at her own home and be refused.

It blazed. That word gets used badly, and it was the correct one — sixty percent of a shattered god-planet, the largest thing in that sky by a margin that made the Pale Shard look like an afterthought, and it was lit from inside, a slow, enormous glow coming up through cloud that was not cloud. The mists moved. That was the part the diagrams had never once managed: they turned, in great unhurried sheets, gold going to white going to a dim pearl at the edges, and they did not thin anywhere, and they did not open anywhere, and there was not one square mile of ground visible on the whole face of it.

Yinxin had one hand on a frame member with nothing hung on it.

”I have never been there,” she said.

Nobody moved.

”I was not born under that. My mother was, and hers, and every silver queen back as far as it goes, and I have the whole of it in me and always have.” Her voice was entirely level. ”I remember the Elven forests from above at the end of a summer. I remember a table in the Dwarven Holds and what was put on it and who was sitting at the other end. I remember the wall at Zhū’kethara under a pair of feet that were not mine. I have never in three thousand years set one foot on that world, and I know the smell of its rain.”

She did not take her eyes off it.

”And I am nine hundred miles above it, and I cannot see one stone. Not one. And I want to say the next part out loud now, while I am looking at it, so that I never have to be told it later by somebody being kind.” A breath. ”She is not hiding it from me. She is hiding it from everyone, and I am part of everyone, and I always was.”

”Why,” said Green, from the aft bulkhead.

Jayde did not answer that. She said, ”Nine. Survey it.”

”Attempting.”

The pause went on long enough that everybody in the cabin noticed it.

”I am not getting a surface, Commander.”

”Explain.”

”Mass I have. Rotation I have. There is a gross atmospheric profile, and it is thicker and warmer than either of the other two.” Nine did not sound troubled, because Nine does not, and that made it worse. ”Below the upper atmosphere, the return is incoherent. Not absent. Corrupted. Every band I hold is coming back scrambled, and it is scrambled differently in each band, and the pattern does not repeat. I have run it nine times.”

”How much of the body?”

”All of it. There is no gap, no thin place, no limb effect, and no seasonal variation in the four hours I have been looking. Whatever is doing that is doing it everywhere and has not stopped for a moment.”

”So what can you tell me?”

”That there is a world there,” said Nine. ”That it is turning. That is the whole of it. I cannot tell you whether anybody is standing on it.”

Yinxin let out a long breath through her nose.

”That is what it is for,” she said.

***

Nobody asked her to explain it, which she noticed, and was grateful for in a way she did not say. Everyone aboard had grown up inside the same facts. It is the sort of thing a dragon is told before they are told to eat quietly.

So Yinxin did not explain anything. She did the thing she had come up here to do, which she had not admitted to anybody, including herself.

She looked for the coast.

There is a run of the northern Elven littoral that every silver queen has flown, because it is the way you come in off the sea and because the light on it at the sixth hour is the reason anybody bothers with mornings at all. She had it from four of them. She knew the order of the headlands and which one you lose first in haze and where the shelf drops and the water goes from green to a blue that is nearly black.

She put her eyes where it would be, and held them there.

The mist turned. It went gold and then white and then the dim pearl at the edges, in great unhurried sheets, and it did not thin, and it did not part, and at no point in the six minutes she gave it did she catch herself expecting it to.

”It is a different object,” she said, at last.

”What is.”

”Knowing.” She did not take her eyes off it. ”I have carried all of that since before I could fly, and I have been correct about every part of it, and it has been a set of sentences in my head, in order, that I can say. And I have just found out what the sentences were describing.”

The only thing anybody noticed afterward was that she stopped standing like a queen somewhere in the fifth minute and did not start again.

***

Heiteng had not said anything since the ship came round.

He has a realm under that mist. A fortress, and a margin, and a hall with four floors of cellar under the east tower, and a house, and a woman in that house who walked out of it on the twenty-third of Ashwhisper with a question he answered in nine lines — and who went home, and took it properly, and is safe.

He stood at the port side of a ship that was not there and thought all of that, and was wrong about the last of it by the width of one continent and nine hundred miles straight down.

Then he did what Yinxin had done, and did it worse, because he has had less practice at wanting things.

He looked for the fortress. Not the city. The fortress, which stands on a spur with the margin running away east of it, and which he has come in over ten thousand times, and which he could draw with his eyes shut down to which of the four towers lays its shadow across the muster yard in winter.

It is four hundred paces across.

At that distance it is not a thing any eye ever grown could resolve, and he knew that before he started, and he looked for it anyway for rather a long time.

”It is beautiful,” he said at last. ”I have never once thought of it as a thing that could be looked at.”

Isha had come up the cabin behind them while nobody was watching and was standing at Jayde’s shoulder with his face turned to the same thing.

”It is a working,” he said.

”I know what it is,” said Yinxin, without turning round.

”You know what it is. You do not know that it is being renewed.” He said it flatly, and it landed the way a dropped tool lands. ”Held, not hung. Continuously. Every moment. I can feel Ala doing it from here — nine hundred miles up, through the outside of the world, with no instrument and no ward and nothing whatsoever between me and it.”

Yinxin turned round.

Isha sat down on the deck, which Jayde had never once seen him do.

”She is very tired,” he said.
