Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 555: Chapter 550: Unsealed

Location:The Ashmarch Gate and the passage

Date/Time:12 Sparkfall 9943 AZI, Restday, first light,

Realm:Mid Realm, into the Lower

The departures side smelled of wet wool.

Forty people in a hall at first light with the rain still on them, and the roof holding the warmth of them up under it, and Cangwei stood eleventh in a line that moved at the speed of a man looking at a piece of paper.

The satchel was for the clerk’s benefit, because a woman with no luggage is a thing a clerk remembers. In it: two changes of linen, a comb, a wooden case of the sort registry clerks carry pens in, a half loaf, and a purse with nothing in it that any house on this world had ever put its mark on. Nothing she would mind losing.

Under her coat, against the ribs, the oilcloth wallet.

Marit Aldren. Six years in the registry office. Passed over twice.

She kept her eyes on the floor while she waited, which is what a woman does who has been queuing since before light and is not enjoying it, and which was also necessary. Her eyes are a pale, hard silver. Bad light forgives them. A clerk with a lamp at his elbow might not.

Out of nothing but habit, she reached for her house.

That is a thing black dragons carry and do not discuss and have never once had a word for — not speech, not sight, nothing you could put in a letter. Presence. She had had his since she was a child in a room she had not chosen, and for thousands of years it had sat somewhere behind her ribs being unremarkable, as the floor of your own hall is unremarkable until it is not there.

It had gone out four years ago.

Not gone quiet. Gone far — one realm to another, and whatever the thing is, it does not reach across. That was the whole reason for the months of work and the two favors and the elimination and the ruinous slow business of establishing where he was not. If it had reached, she would have known where he was in an afternoon, four years ago, and none of the rest of it would ever have happened.

She reached anyway. There was nothing, as there had been nothing every time.

The woman in front of her had a child in each hand and was explaining to both of them, in the flat voice of somebody who has explained it eleven times, that no, they were not going to see it, and no, it did not look like anything, and yes, they would still be holding on.

Ahead of them, the passage mouth stood open in the end wall.

It was not much to look at, and Cangwei had spent two days being disappointed by that. An arch of dressed stone about four men wide, and inside it, no far side. Not darkness. The absence of a view, as happens with a doorway when the room beyond it is exactly as bright as the room you are in and yet you cannot see one thing in it.

Six paces from it now.

Nothing.

Five paces. Four.

Nothing at all. No pressure, no attention, no drag on anything she was carrying. She had spent two days in this town building it into something with weather round it, and she was standing an arm’s length from the thing itself, and it was a hole in a wall.

”Papers.”

Ferrin had been in that chair long enough to have worn the varnish off the arms of it. He took the wallet, opened it, and read at the speed of a man reading his ninth in a quarter hour.

”Aldren.”

”Yes.”

”Posted where?”

”South.” She let it come out with the edge on it. ”Inventory. Temple holdings. Six years in a registry office and they have sent me to count grain sheds on the worst continent there is.”

Ferrin looked up for the first time.

”You’ll want a hat,” he said, and stamped it, and handed it back, and looked past her at the woman with the two children. ”Next.” ℴ

That was all of it.

Cangwei put the wallet inside her coat and walked four paces and stepped through the arch.

***

The Laws found her at the second step.

Not the first. She was afterward certain of the first, because the first step had her whole weight on her front foot and the floor of the passage had a lip on it, and she noticed the lip, and noticed noticing it.

The second step, something read her.

There is no better word, and she looked for one for a long time afterward. Not a hand. Not a look. Nothing with a face behind it and nothing with any interest in her — the sensation was so entirely without malice that her body did not raise anything against it, because there was nothing to raise anything against. Something enormous went over her the way a lamp goes over a page.

Then it found the top of her, and stopped, and took hold.

The warmth went out of her hands first.

She kept walking. That was the thing she was proudest of afterward and the thing she never told anybody, because there was a woman two paces ahead with a child on each hand and a queue of forty behind, and Marit Aldren was a registry clerk with a grievance and a hat to buy, and Cangwei kept walking.

Her fingers went cold from the tips down to the second knuckle in about four steps. Not numb. Cold, as a hand is cold when the blood has gone somewhere it is needed more.

Six steps. Seven.

It began to come out of her.

The direction of it was the part she had not been ready for. It did not go into anything. There was no one on the other end of it, nothing gathering it, no mouth. It came up out of her core and went out through her and down, into the floor, into the stone, into the world — and the world took it back as a ledger takes a figure, without gratitude, without appetite, because a thing had been over a line and now it was not.

Eleven steps.

The fourth refinement went at eleven.

Forty years, that one. Forty years in a low gallery with the doors shut, working it down and down until there was nothing left in it that was not necessary. She felt it lift out of the place she kept it, whole, the entire architecture of it going up and away like a plate off a shelf, and she made a sound.

It was very small. The woman ahead did not turn round.

Fourteen. Sixteen.

The ninth went, and the seventh, and the one she had never named because she had built it in a bad year and did not like remembering the year. They did not go in the order she had made them. They went in the order they sat, top down, and she understood in the middle of it that nothing in the passage knew what any of them were. They were height. That was all they were to it. It was taking the top off her as you take the top off a wall, and it did not matter what the stones had been carved into.

Twenty steps, and Cangwei looked to her left.

There was a man walking level with her. Middle years, a heavy pack, boots that had been resoled twice, and he was looking straight ahead with the mild vacancy of somebody thinking about something else entirely.

Nothing was happening to him.

For three full steps she looked at him.

Not that he was low enough that there was nothing to take — he might have been, and half the hall might have been, and that would have explained nothing about how quiet the air near him was. Whatever went over her at the second step and was still going over her now was not going over him. It was not that he had passed. It was that he had never been seen.

A carrier’s house sorts a Seal for its people as it sorts a bill of lading, in a morning, for a fee, because the clans have been signing them for that traffic since before anybody thought to find it remarkable. What Hilgrund had refused was never a document. It was a foreign dragon with no clan standing who would not say what she wanted it for.

And Cangwei, twenty-three steps into the only passage left into the Lower Realm, with the top of her life coming off a course at a time, understood exactly what the dwarves make.

A Seal does not pay anything.

A Seal is a place to stand where the Laws do not look.

That was why Hilgrund’s people had watched their own go down and not come up. That was why a hall in a mountain got to decide, and clans took months over it, and a signatory in the Mid Realm was worth waiting on. Not a fee. Not permission. Concealment, in a place where being seen is the entire cost, and the dwarves had never once said so out loud to anybody, and there was no reason on this world why they should have.

Twenty-six.

Then it went faster.

***

It had been going at the speed of walking because she had been walking, and something changed, and the last of it came in a rush.

Afterward she was never able to reconstruct whether it sped up or whether she slowed down.

Everything above Peak Blazecrowned came out of her in the space of perhaps two breaths.

Peace had been made with losing it. That was the truth, and she held on to it later when there was very little else to hold: she had priced this in a mountain in the east with a dwarf watching her face while she did it, and had agreed to it, and had walked down a hill in the dark to buy the paper that let her do it. What she had not priced was the rate.

There is a difference between a wall being taken down and a wall being pulled over.

Thirty steps. That was the whole of the passage between two worlds — she had assumed something longer, a road, a crossing you could see the length of, and it was thirty steps of dressed stone, and everything she had was being got out of her inside them.

Something tore.

It went, and it was not any of the things she had built, and it was not tier, and it was not rank. It was underneath all of that, in the private arithmetic of what a body holds and how fast, and it was not taken, and it was not returned to anything. It simply broke on the way past, the way a stair breaks under a load; it was carrying fine until the load moved.

The passage went white.

Cangwei got her shoulder onto the wall. There was a wall. She had not known there was a wall until she needed one, and she leaned on the stone with her cheek against it and her whole mouth full of the taste of iron, and she did not go down.

Twenty-nine, said something well below the part of her that decides things. Thirty.

It had kept the count. Three steps of her life had happened with nobody in them, and her feet had gone on doing what feet do, and not one part of it had been inconvenienced by her absence. Then she was back, four paces further on, with her hand flat on the wall and her name arriving in her head like a coat handed to her at a door.

Cangwei.

She put it on. It fit.

Behind her, the woman with the two children went past on the other side of the passage, still explaining. One of the children looked at her.

Cangwei took her hand off the wall and walked out.

***

Sound came back before anything else did.

Boots on stone, and a man calling a name twice, and somewhere off to the right the flat wooden clatter of a crate being opened by somebody who did not own it.

Then the light, and the light was the wrong color.

Not by much. It was the shade you would get if you took a good sky and washed it twice, and it came down through high windows into a hall built to the same plan as the one she had left, by the same people, for the same purpose, and she came out of the arch into a queue.

Arrivals.

Eight desks. Baggage on trestles with the straps off. Men in white.

This is the part that was always going to be the problem, said something in her that was still working, and it was correct, and it was also two hours too late to be of any use.

Cangwei got into the line.

This was the machine. She had watched it from behind a pillar two days ago and admired the thoroughness of it, and she was inside it now, and it was very slow.

Standing turned out to be harder than walking. She learned that in the first few minutes and then had the rest of the morning to sit with it, and she got through it by an arrangement of small deceptions — weight onto the satchel strap, the strap onto the shoulder, the shoulder onto nothing at all, because there was nothing in that hall to lean on and leaning is what they look for. Ahead of her, a bale of hides came off a trestle and went back on in a different order. Behind her, somebody was explaining a crate for the second time.

The line moved the length of a man about once in a quarter hour.

The core was there. She checked it the way you check a room after a fire, from the door, without going in: the walls in the correct places and nothing on the shelves.

There was less than nothing on one shelf. There was a hole where a shelf had been.

”Papers.”

The clerk was younger than Ferrin and less bored, and he read the whole of it, both sides.

”Aldren. Marit.”

”Yes.”

”Purpose.”

”Inventory.” She heard her own voice come out level and was distantly amazed by it. ”Temple holdings. I am to count grain sheds.”

”How long are you here for?”

”They did not tell me. They have not told me anything since the first of Emberrise.”

The clerk’s mouth did something at one corner and did not commit to it. He looked at her face for a moment longer than he had looked at the paper. Cangwei kept her eyes on the desk and let him.

He opened her satchel. Linen, a comb, a pen case, half a loaf.

He wrote her into the book.

The pen took perhaps five seconds, and there it was: a line in a ledger in a Temple hall, in a Temple realm, under a name a woman in the Slagrows had made up on a Quenchday morning. It would hold until somebody asked after Marit Aldren. Ottilie had been honest about that and had charged her for the honesty and it had been worth every ingot.

”Through there,” the clerk said, and looked past her, and did not say anything else.

***

Outside, the air was thin, and it was green.

Cangwei got twenty paces from the hall door and stopped, because both of those things arrived at once and she could not take them in walking.

The thinness first, because it was the one she had been warned about. Four years of every dragon in the Upper Realm agreeing that the Lower Realm was a rubbish heap, and here was the ambient of it on her tongue, and it was thin — the ambient of a world that has been drunk from for a long time by something.

And the green.

Heavy, wet, enormous. Growing things, and turned earth under that, and under that woodsmoke from somebody’s morning fire. It came up the street at her in a slab and she stood in the middle of it with her satchel on her hip and could not make it agree with one single thing she had been told.

She was, by any reckoning her house would recognize, a considerable dragon reduced to something she would not previously have wasted an afternoon on.

She was also, by the reckoning of the hall behind her, an unremarkable woman with a grievance and a posting who had come down on the morning traffic and been written into a book.

Then, very carefully, she reached for the only instrument she had left.

It was faint. It was so faint that she went cold going after it and had to stop, and start again more slowly, and when she found it, it was less like hearing a voice than like a hand laid flat on a wall, and a room on the other side of the wall.

Heiteng.

West, and a long way south of west. Steady. Entirely unaware.

Cangwei stood in a foreign street in the wrong-colored morning and understood the shape of what she had bought. On any ordinary day of her life, he would have felt her the instant she crossed. He would have been in the air inside a minute. He would have arrived furious, and she would have had the argument standing up, and it would have been finished by noon.

Whatever had torn in that passage had taken her end of it down to a whisper.

She could find him.

He could not feel her coming.

”All right,” she said, to a world that had never heard of her.

Then she went to find a room, and she did not take the first price.
