Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 577: Chapter 572: The Weight of Him

Location:Ferrow Crossing, The Last Kingdom; and Kaelport

Date/Time:17 Blazepeak 9943 AZI, Grindday

Realm:Lower Realm

Seventy-two days out of Dalgate, and he had become heavy.

That was the only word Cangwei had for it, and she disliked it, because it was not a word for a direction, and she had spent three months training herself to treat him as a direction and nothing else. West. A long way south of west. Twice a day, morning and last thing, on a schedule, because a thing you check on a schedule cannot become a thing you check compulsively.

The schedule had held. The word had not.

At Dalgate he had been a whisper at the far end of a corridor — a bearing, and the knowledge that the bearing was a person, and nothing else in it at all. Somewhere on the long road through the middle kingdom that had begun to change, and she had noted it and filed it and declined to be pleased about it, and had gone on walking.

Now she stood on a bridge at Ferrow Crossing in the morning with her hand on the parapet and closed her eyes and let one breath go out of her, and he was there.

Not near. Only a fool reads distance off it, and she had been that fool exactly once, in the fourth week, and had corrected it before it cost her anything. Still days off. But there was weight in it now, and texture, and the particular slow steadiness that had always been the whole of him — a man standing in the middle of something and not moving — and after four years of nothing at all it was like coming into a room with a fire in it.

Cangwei stood on that bridge rather longer than an envoy with a posting has any business standing on a bridge.

Then she opened her eyes, because the other half of the thought had arrived while she stood there, and she had been turning it over for six days and had not yet found a way out of it.

If he was that clear to her, she was that clear to him.

***

The last kingdom is called Harrow in its own mouth and nothing at all by anybody outside it, and she had been walking across it for eleven days.

It had grain. That was the first thing, and it was not a small thing to a woman who had walked three kingdoms to get here. The eastern country had been thin the whole way — not starving, but the kind of thin where a village eats and does not lay anything by — and then she had come over the watershed at the start of Blazepeak and gone down into a valley with three-year stacks standing in it.

Three-year stacks. On a continent where four years ago, by every account she had been given in four years of Upper Realm despatches, people had been eating their seed.

Cangwei had stopped a man on the road about it. She was Marit Aldren, aggrieved, on a posting, complaining about the state of the ditches, and she had got him on to the subject of the stacks inside two minutes because a farmer will always talk about grain.

”Corps buys forward,” he said.

”Forward.”

”Says what they’ll pay in Emberrise for what comes off in Cinderfall. Pays half up front.” He said it as a man says a thing he has stopped finding remarkable. ”So you plant to it. You know what you’re getting, so you plant it.”

”And if the harvest fails.”

”Then they’ve paid half for nothing.” He looked at her as if she were slow, which she was accustomed to by now and had stopped minding. ”They’ve done it three years. First year nobody believed them. You want the Kaelport road for that shrine of yours, by the way. Everything comes off the Kaelport road.”

There it was again.

It had been in every conversation for eleven days and in a good many before that, and Cangwei had stopped being careful about noticing it. Kaelport. Not a capital, not a fortress, not anywhere that had existed in any despatch she had ever read. A grain yard on the western coast of a continent nobody in the Upper Realm had thought about since the Sundering, and every road on this world now ran to it.

And somewhere in it, by the word of a drover in a taproom ten weeks ago, there was a big foreign fellow who was all right and argued about carts.

It had not been written down, and it still had not been written down.

***

The wing was as good as it was going to get.

That had become plain at the end of Scorchwind, on a clear morning with nobody within four days, when she had gone up off a hillside for the first time since the fold and had got perhaps two hundred paces and had known inside the first four wingbeats that the shoulder was carrying her and would go on carrying her and would never again carry her the way it had.

Not ruin. Not even much. A soundness that stopped about a hand’s width short of where the old one had stopped, on a joint that had done the same thing eight thousand times a year for sixteen thousand years and had never once been short of anything.

Then down again, and folded, and on foot, with about one wingbeat’s worth of grief allowed for it, and not back up since, because a dragon in the air over this continent is a thing people write down.

The core did not get looked at.

That had not changed either, and she had stopped pretending it was discipline. The fourth refinement had left a place behind it that could be felt as you feel a missing tooth with your tongue, and she had stopped doing that too, mostly.

And under it, in the other place, the thing that had torn.

Her hand had gone on it twice at Dalgate and once more since, in the middle kingdom, in a rented room with the shutters closed, and had come away exactly as she had come away the other times — knowing less than when she started, with the distinct and unpleasant sense of having reached for something that had declined to be anything at all.

A woman who has been right about what she looks at for sixteen thousand years does not enjoy that.

So she had stopped looking, and had walked, and had let the days do whatever days do.

***

The other thing she had learned, she had learned at a gatehouse in the middle kingdom, and it had taken her most of a week to stop turning over.

Doors to what. That had been her question at the shrine at the crossroads in Ashbloom, standing under a roof that leaked, with four grain sheds and eleven jars in a cellar on her list and an institution that plainly did not want any of it.

There was an answer now, or enough of one.

The Temple keeps one thing on this continent, and the rest is furniture.

It keeps the road up.

It had come out of a bored under-clerk at a gate post who had been complaining about the rota, and it had come out sideways, as the true shape of a thing always does — that the passage is held at this end by men in white, that everything that goes up is counted in at the top against a book, that there has not been an unwritten ascent in anybody’s memory, and that the rota is miserable because absolutely nothing ever happens.

Four sheds. A shrine. Two road posts. Eleven jars.

And the only way off this world.

That is not neglect, and it is not an oversight, and it is not an institution that has forgotten a province. It is an institution that came here for exactly one thing, took it, and has spent the intervening centuries declining to spend another coin.

Cangwei had walked most of a day with that.

Because it meant something about her, and the something was simple and she had not permitted herself to arrive at it until the road out of the gatehouse was empty.

She had come down uncrossed, on a bought name, through a rail that does not much care who leaves, into a country where everything that arrives is written in a book and everything that leaves is counted in at the other end.

There is no back.

Not because of what she had lost, though that was not coming back either. Because the only door is held by the one institution in three realms that would find a black dragon on its list interesting.

All of that had been known before she went down the stairs, in the sense that she had been told it.

It had not been known the way it was known now.

The coin was the other arithmetic, and she had been doing it since the watershed.

Marit Aldren had been provisioned for nine weeks. Marit Aldren had now been alive for more than three months, and an envoy on a posting does not draw against an office that has never heard of her, and there had been no clever solution to that and was not going to be one. So: the ledger got sold at Rill, which hurt more than it should have, because she had kept it in a fair hand since Sparkfall and a man bought it for the paper. The spare coat went at the same stall. After that it was inventories.

That was the part she had not seen coming and had come to be almost fond of. A woman in a Temple coat who can count, and write, and total a column twice and get the same figure, is worth four days’ lodging to any factor on any road on any world, and she had done it seven times between the watershed and Ferrow Crossing and had been paid every time, and had been paid badly, and had not once been asked a question she could not answer.

There is a great deal you learn about a country by adding up what is in its sheds.

***

And still, every morning and every last thing, he was there.

That was the whole of what carried her through the eleven days of Harrow, and she was clear-eyed enough about it to be a little ashamed. Food had been poor. The coin was thinner than she had planned, because three months and more is longer than nine weeks and she had budgeted for nine. The boots were finished. There was a place on her right shoulder where the satchel strap had worn through two shirts and had started on the third, and she had reached a point some weeks ago of simply letting it.

None of that mattered, because twice a day she closed her eyes and a man she had known for sixteen thousand years was standing steady somewhere west and south of west, and every day the weight of him was a little more.

So she had begun to expect him.

Not consciously. That was the thing she had caught herself at on the fifth day out of the watershed, on a road with nothing on it, when a cart had come up behind her and she had turned round.

He would have felt her in the middle kingdom. He would certainly have felt her the moment she came over that watershed, and there is not one version of Heiteng, in sixteen thousand years, that feels her come over a watershed onto the same continent as him and finishes what he is doing first.

In the air inside a breath. The whole way in a day, and down in front of her on whatever road she was on, and so angry that he would not have been able to say any of it, and she had rehearsed the shape of that meeting perhaps four hundred times since Vor Hakkun and had got as far as deciding she would let him go first.

It had not happened.

Eleven days over the watershed and across Harrow. Nothing in the sky, nothing on the road, and a man standing steady west and south of west, entirely unmoving, day after day after day.

***

Cangwei worked it out on the bridge at Ferrow Crossing, and it took her about four minutes, and she was very calm about all of it.

He knows she is here. That is certain; it is the one thing in the whole business that is not in question, because it is the thing they are, and it has never once failed in sixteen thousand years.

He has not come.

He is not dead, because a dead man is not a weight. He is not ill, because it does not feel like that and she would know what it felt like. He is not somewhere he cannot leave in the sense of distance, because there is nowhere on a continent that a black dragon cannot leave in a day.

So either he does not wish to see her.

Or he cannot come.

Cangwei stood on that bridge with her hand on the parapet and held both of them up against the light, honestly, as she had held every other pair of possibilities for half a year, and she was aware that she wanted the second one and that wanting it was a reason to distrust it, and she distrusted it, and it survived.

Because the first one required Heiteng to feel her standing on this continent, alone, on a road, having come down a way he knew what it cost — and to go on with his morning.

There is no version of him that does that. Not angry. Not ashamed. Not even if he had decided in his own head that she had been a fool, which she certainly had been and would be told so at length.

He would come and shout at her. That is what he is.

So he cannot come.

And a man who can go anywhere on a continent in a day, and does not, when the person he is bound to is standing on a bridge a week off with a torn core and everything she owns in a satchel —

That man is held.

***

There was a while longer of standing there.

Then Cangwei adjusted the strap where it had worn through, because it had been wearing at the same place since Sparkfall, and went down off the bridge onto the western road with her satchel on her hip and her boots going and a bought name in her mouth, entirely certain, for the first time since the twenty-third of Ashwhisper, that she had been right from the beginning.

Four days to the county line. A week, perhaps nine days, to Kaelport.

***

At Kaelport that morning Heiteng lifted a sill in the east store, and reached for the floor of his own hall out of a habit seven days old, and found it gone, exactly as gone as it had been for four years.

Every morning that week he had read it the same: a woman safe on the other side of a world.
