Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1100: Chapter 609: Learning Foreign Languages Is Great (2)

But if you say that lifting the restrictions will cause grain prices to rise, they would agree and even take the initiative to maintain it.

However, is there really anyone in Ovando who can still play the role of a profiteer?

The purpose of the restrictions is mainly to establish a monopoly, preventing Hamlet’s grain from being exported, which is Ovando’s role.

However, there is now a matter in front of Walter, which is whether or not to supply grain to the Empire?

......

When he began flipping through those documents and researching, Lance realized his knowledge in this area was insufficient.

The ancient vocabulary used in the lost civilization varies significantly from the present, sometimes referring to the same thing with two different words, along with regional styles and the civilization’s own characteristics.

Even though Lance had some background in ancient languages, his knowledge was initially to impress girls, so his real ability was just to understand roughly and make educated guesses.

But the craftsmanship in processing cannot be taken lightly; even a small error could cause significant trouble.

Fortunately, there is an interesting aspect, which is that because of the danger inherent in the Transcendents’ path, the inherited text is instead the most stable, as mistakes could literally be fatal.

And they all have results from extensive research on ancient books, especially organizations with stable traditions.

So Lance specifically sought out Amanda to consult on some questions.

Learning a foreign language is necessary; the more you learn, the better.

However, somehow the research delved into extremely profound topics, and they ended up discussing the entire night...

Now that it was daylight, and Lance seldom woke up naturally, he was preparing for a new day of work.

As for Amanda, she was too exhausted from teaching the foreign language to even get out of bed.

However, their study was fruitful. The formulas and processes have been decoded; they just need practical study to see results.

As for how effective it will be, it’s uncertain. Lance is prepared to gain experience from failures.

At this moment, walking down the street, he could already feel a slight chill in the air.

Though Lance is not afraid of the cold, he still instinctively shrugged his shoulders and muttered to himself:

”It’s about October by now, isn’t it...”

No matter how much Lance hurries, time continues to fly by swiftly.

Although not in the absurd state of the lost civilization, there is still some pressure.

He began counting from when he left for the Bay and realized it has been nearly half a month. Many matters in Hamlet needed his understanding and resolution.

Thinking of this, he quickened his pace and hurried to the administrative building.

Now that the entire system has been constructed and is gradually being perfected, she doesn’t need to focus too much on it. Proper delegation is necessary to select capable talents.

In the morning, Grendel was still working here, but Lance unexpectedly saw someone who shouldn’t be here.

That so-called Imperial Princess Sofia, whom he last met in Grendel’s garden, how did she end up here?

”My Lord,” Sofia seemed a bit dazed upon seeing Lance.

That’s when she realized this lord seemed to have been missing for almost half a month.

”Hmm~” Lance only nodded in response to her appearance and didn’t say much more.

”Let’s talk about this later, you go and work for now.”

Grendel returned the file and directed her to leave. In response, Sofia didn’t say much, picked up the file, and left the office. However, before closing the door, her gaze fell on the lord.

”What is she doing here?” Lance’s slightly furrowed brow revealed his dissatisfaction.

”We can’t just have a princess as a gardener. She’s well-educated and capable.”

”So what if she’s a princess? Does being a princess make her special? I, as a lord, still have to personally step into the Beast Lair. Is it so bad for her to plant flowers?”

Lance spoke openly, showing his discontent with this reasoning.

Grendel sensed the strangeness in Lance’s attitude but didn’t know what had happened, so she asked with confusion.

”Is something wrong? Do you have a problem with Sofia?”

Upon hearing her words, Lance’s eyes unintentionally narrowed slightly, looking at Grendel with a hint of indescribable disappointment.

Do you really not understand? Or are you pretending not to understand?

He has always disliked being cryptic and didn’t feel the need to hide his thoughts, speaking directly.

”The selection of personnel is a process. Although it’s not perfect now, rules are still rules.

She has no outstanding ability, hasn’t made significant contributions to Hamlet, and her identity isn’t fully verified. What gives her the right to access Hamlet’s secrets today?

Is it because she’s an Imperial Princess? Because she has your favor? Or because she’s pretty?

By promoting her directly, are you being fair to those who work hard and diligently for Hamlet? How would they feel seeing this?”

As he hit the key point, Lance’s voice naturally grew louder, saying the most crucial issue with firm conviction.

”It’s not that she has a problem, it’s that you have a problem. You’ve broken the rules, do you know that!”

Lance’s words were extremely aggressive, directly targeting Grendel.

It’s rare for him to have such an attitude in front of those close to him unless it touches on a boundary issue.

Such direct words also awakened Grendel, and she suddenly understood why Lance was so averse to Sofia.

Or rather, it wasn’t Sofia that mattered; he was against the phenomenon of privilege Sofia represented.

Because this phenomenon was undermining the foundation he had built, and somehow, she had inadvertently encouraged this privilege...

Grendel was stunned and became even more perplexed but couldn’t help asking with doubt.

”But didn’t I also come directly to this position...?”

”What was your status at that time? You were a doctor who cured the withering disease, a hero saving Hamlet from a plague.

Reflect on it; back then, who in Hamlet didn’t know you? Plus, those rules hadn’t yet been refined, the whole system was just starting out.

Who is Sofia? Besides the two of us, no one else even knows her, and her identity is questionable. Who knows if she really is a princess; I could claim to be the Emperor.”

Having clarified the matter, Lance looked at her reaction and realized she had no awareness of it.

Grendel had the capability, but a tribal mindset constrained her.

In a tribe, with a small population and everyone practically related, along with enough external pressure forcing people to unite for survival, such practices were naturally possible.

Even in the Empire, such nepotism wouldn’t be outdated, the difference being it has the Nobility system as its foundation.

Just like how the Emperor can only rapidly promote those close to him but can’t interfere with appointments within other territories, as that’s a lord’s domain of nepotism.

Only to say this era is like this, these behaviors are not only not considered strange but deemed normal, contributing to such chaos.

But if put in Hamlet, it wouldn’t have gone wrong; Lance’s fundamental logic in designing this system didn’t allow for this.

Ignorance is not a crime, and her inability to break free from fixed thinking wasn’t her fault, as that’s the environment. Even modern society hasn’t resolved this issue, and instantaneously shifting perceptions is unrealistic.

What Lance said was meant to make her aware of the problem’s severity, not to, nor could it, truly scold her.

Such scolding, aside from venting negative emotions, wouldn’t solve any problem and would only intensify conflict.

Moreover, she never favored such matters, only involved in Hamlet’s mundane affairs for his sake as a lord.

Lance didn’t want this awkward situation to continue any further, finally sighing and starting to explain from a deeper level for Grendel, who lacked political acumen.

”This issue isn’t your fault. I do have concerns about Sofia, partly because I haven’t clarified some matters to you. There was an Imperial influence behind Hamlet’s destruction in those days...”
