Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

Because he had been staying up late for the past couple of days, Davis slept like a log. By the time he finally woke up, the sky outside his bedroom window had already turned dim with the colors of dusk.

”Did I sleep too long...?”

He rubbed his temples gently, feeling as though his entire head were wrapped in fog.

He hadn’t slept well.

Part of it was because his biological clock was completely out of sync. But another reason was that he’d had an unpleasant dream.

After witnessing a glimpse of the power wielded by Legendary Pokémon during the Pikachu Cup finals, Davis had gone out of his way to research several major incidents that had occurred in the Huaxia Region, including the Crystalization Incident at Cangqing Mountain.

Ever since then, after truly realizing the overwhelming might of Legendary Pokémon, he’d been plagued by nightmares.

After all...

The United States was the country where conflict between humans and Pokémon was at its fiercest.

Davis was terrified that one day, someone in his country might provoke a Legendary Pokémon. If that happened, the ordinary people living there would undoubtedly face an unimaginable disaster.

And...

Given the way the President tended to handle things...

It honestly didn’t seem impossible.

That was the source of Davis’s anxiety.

”I should at least get myself a glass of water.”

He glanced at the empty cup beside his bed and was about to get up.

Just then—

The vibration of his phone on the nightstand caught his attention.

Looking at the caller ID, he frowned in confusion.

”Hello?”

The moment he answered, an anxious voice exploded from the other end.

”Oh my God! Davis, you finally woke the hell up!”

”What happened? Why are you so worked up? Don’t tell me the President’s having another episode trying to fulfill one of his campaign promises and is planning to send the military to drive out wild Pokémon.”

The nightmare he’d just had flashed through his mind, making his heart skip a beat.

Still holding the water cup, he froze and quickly continued.

”Even though we managed to reclaim some control over the wilderness in the last operation, we paid an enormous price. Besides, with the government’s intelligence network, the President should know about the existence of Legendary Pokémon. If we anger something on that level, things won’t just—”

”What are you even talking about, Davis?!”

The person on the other end was clearly stunned by the barrage of words.

Only after a moment did he hurriedly interrupt him.

”...”

Davis quickly calmed down.

Opening his mouth, he finally realized he’d overreacted.

”Sorry...”

”You don’t need to apologize to me. But Davis... I really do think your mental state hasn’t been great lately. Make sure you get enough rest. We can only do our best.”

”I know.”

Davis let out a bitter laugh.

”By the way, what was it you wanted to tell me?”

”Hah, you almost made me forget.”

The voice on the other end became noticeably more excited.

”Davis, something huge really did happen—but it’s great news! Congratulations! All your hard work finally paid off. Your videos have blown the hell up!”

”...Huh?!”

Davis froze before hurriedly asking,

”What do you mean? Explain!”

”Hahahaha! Don’t rush me, Davis. You know what I’m like—the more I explain, the more confusing it’ll get. Just go look it up yourself. It’ll be easy to find. We’ll talk in the group chat later.”

Before Davis could say another word, the call ended.

Only then did he notice that his call log was completely filled with missed calls.

Every single one came from friends in the various chat groups.

”What on earth...”

He stood there blankly.

Although most Americans viewed Pokémon with hostility, Davis had spent the past several months gathering together and joining communities of people who held friendlier attitudes toward them.

He had even met some nearby group members in person.

Still, since everyone had first met online, they usually preferred chatting in group chats instead of making phone calls.

After all, people who sympathized with Pokémon were mostly city dwellers.

Unlike those living in rural areas, they rarely came into direct conflict with wild Pokémon. Without their personal interests being harmed, it was much easier for them to change their views.

”Could one of my videos have been recommended by some huge YouTuber or streamer?”

The thought crossed his mind.

Then he shook his head.

He had approached big creators before.

But since he wasn’t wealthy and his content revolved around ”monsters,” he’d naturally been turned away.

Besides...

Even if one or two large creators had promoted his work, it wouldn’t explain why so many friends had urgently called him.

His mind raced through countless possibilities, but his body didn’t stop moving.

Setting the water cup aside, he hurried to his computer and logged in.

The moment he opened his YouTube dashboard...

He was utterly stunned.

Ever since he started editing Pikachu Cup videos, including the one he’d uploaded that very morning, he had produced exactly ten videos.

Previously...

The first nine averaged only four or five thousand views.

None had more than thirty comments.

But now...

At a glance, even the newest video—the one uploaded that morning—had already surpassed 500,000 views.

And every time the page refreshed, the numbers continued climbing.

It was absurd.

Completely absurd.

Ignoring the short review period after uploading, it hadn’t even been ten hours since he’d gone to sleep.

Even established creators with massive subscriber bases couldn’t guarantee numbers like these for every upload.

Certain that something far bigger was going on, Davis opened the highest-viewed video on his channel.

”The Ideal Hero—The Greatest Champion Standing at the Pinnacle of Trainers!”

Among all ten videos, it was the only one that wasn’t solely about the Pikachu Cup.

The title alone made its subject obvious.

It focused on the legendary figure whose influence had transformed the entire Huaxia Region.

Davis could confidently say this was the highest-quality video he had ever made.

To showcase Chen Mo’s appeal to audiences around the world, he had practically combed through every archived livestream involving him.

He had also used the classic Huaxia documentary Humans and Pokémon: Our Choice as a major reference.

The finished video exceeded an hour in length.

Naturally...

It had also demanded the most effort.

Combined with the all-night revisions he made after incorporating footage from the Pikachu Cup finals, the video had only officially been released yesterday.

As an experienced editor, Davis understood audience behavior well.

This wasn’t his newest upload.

Nor had it previously been his most-viewed.

Yet it was now experiencing the fastest—and most explosive—growth.

There was only one possible conclusion.

The answer lay within this video.

Without hesitation, Davis clicked into it and scrolled straight down to the comments section, which had already surpassed ten thousand comments.

The next second...

Messages written in countless different languages filled his screen.

”Came here because everyone was talking about it.”

”Humans can release lightning directly now? Have humans evolved that far already? And why didn’t evolution take me along?!”

”I smell a conspiracy.”

”This version is much more complete. The other upload only showed half of it.”

”I spent half an hour watching this at 2x speed and finally finished it. I have to admit, this Huaxian named Chen Mo is incredible. But I still don’t understand why he could use lightning or how he’s connected to that yellow electric mouse. Also... what’s a Legendary Pokémon?”

”Did the people of Huaxia... actually succeed?”

”Damn it! Those Huaxians are all insane! The President was right! These monsters are all part of a conspiracy created by the Huaxians! Bunch of damn yellow monkeys!”

The comments section was complete chaos.

Racial prejudice.

Hatred toward Pokémon.

Curiosity about the video’s protagonist.

Shock at the cooperative relationship between humans and Pokémon.

All kinds of conflicting opinions flooded together.

Although Davis had expected this to some extent, seeing some of the increasingly deranged insults still made him frown in anger.

But...

He knew this wasn’t the time to dwell on that.

Continuing to sift through the comments for useful information, one particular phrase soon caught his eye.

The Earth Union Assembly.

In that instant...

Davis suddenly remembered something he’d completely forgotten.

The Earth Union Assembly had been founded during the last World War as an international organization dedicated to maintaining global peace and security.

Even today, it remained tremendously influential.

In the early days after Pokémon descended upon the world, global conditions had been chaotic.

The Assembly had regularly convened to discuss the ”Monster Invasion” and coordinate humanitarian aid for countries hit hardest by Pokémon-related disasters.

According to news shared in his group chat some time ago...

The Assembly was scheduled to hold another international conference on the Pokémon issue.

This time, it would be an in-person summit.

And the date...

Davis’s pupils contracted.

It was today.

...

On YouTube’s front page, one video dominated the rankings with an overwhelming lead.

Having already searched up the entire story, Davis watched with a mixture of anticipation and complicated emotions as he clicked on a video titled:

”The Man Who Made Every Nation at the Earth Union Assembly Start Arguing.”

July 15, 9:00 a.m., U.S. time.

The original purpose of the Assembly had been to discuss aid for a Middle Eastern nation that had suffered devastating losses because of Pokémon.

However, midway through the conference, the Huaxia delegation suddenly proposed that every country cease its war against Pokémon and instead move toward peaceful coexistence between humans and Pokémon.

The proposal exploded like a bomb.

Calling for an end to the fighting wasn’t particularly controversial.

After all, once most countries realized that Pokémon generally remained in wilderness areas, they had wisely suspended military operations.

But the second half of the proposal...

Peaceful coexistence between humans and Pokémon?

How were nations supposed to resolve the hatred that already existed between the two?

Just as expected...

The Huaxia proposal instantly threw the entire Assembly into an uproar.

Then—

As if pouring fuel onto the flames, the U.S. delegation played a video.

The conference erupted completely.

This was also the true reason Davis’s videos had suddenly become so popular.

He clicked play.

Immediately, the conference hall—filled with political elites from countries around the world—sounded less like an international summit and more like a bustling street market.

If one listened carefully beneath the cacophony of different languages...

There was even the unmistakable sound of crackling electricity.

The camera then tilted upward.

The video being projected before every national delegation finally came into view.

It was none other than the exhibition match from the Pikachu Cup finals—

The special battle after Meloetta appeared, featuring Banette and Chen Mo’s Pikachu.

Every nation had its own intelligence channels.

Although international communication had become much more limited after Pokémon arrived, that was mainly true for ordinary civilians.

Governments had long since learned, through various means, everything that had happened in Anping City and during the Pikachu Cup.

After all...

The Huaxia authorities had never made any effort to hide these events.

Knowing about them was one thing.

But the unique relationship that had developed between humans and Pokémon in the Huaxia Region had never before been formally discussed at a global conference like this.

Judging from the attitudes displayed by both Huaxia and the United States, the two sides were finally preparing to hold a serious international debate on the issue.

Especially regarding the mysterious power demonstrated by the young Huaxian man in the video.

After all...

People could still barely wrap their heads around humans commanding Pokémon.

But a human personally wielding supernatural power...

That was an entirely different matter.

Watching the scene unfold on his monitor, Davis clenched both fists tightly.

He finally understood.

One person alone could never hope to change society.

Realizing the ideals hidden deep in one’s heart through individual effort alone was nearly impossible.

But...

A collective.

A nation.

Their place in the tide of change was completely different from that of an individual.

They possessed the power to shape the direction of history itself.
