Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

Clefairy were exceptionally sensitive to the aura of Moon Stones.

The moment countless Moon Stones began pouring from Chen Mo’s palm, they immediately caught the attention of the many Clefairy busily working around the spacecraft.

”...Clef...” (The Great God...)

Having witnessed the miracle with their own eyes, the arriving Clefairy—just like the Clefable before them—instantly concluded that Chen Mo was the divine being who had secretly watched over them throughout their journey.

”Pika?!”

Perched on Chen Mo’s shoulder as the translator, Pikachu was completely dumbfounded.

Realizing things were rapidly spiraling out of control, Chen Mo quickly stopped exchanging Moon Stones through the System Shop.

Unfortunately...

That did absolutely nothing to cool the Clefairy’s enthusiasm.

Now thoroughly convinced that Chen Mo was their long-awaited deity, the Clefairy formed three concentric circles around him.

Then...

As though performing some ancient ritual...

They began hopping in place while slowly circling him.

”Clef-clef~ Clef-clef~”

Cheerful, reverent cries echoed throughout the valley.

Chen Mo watched the scene with amused curiosity.

Still...

Knowing there had been a huge misunderstanding, he soon turned toward the lead Clefable.

”Clefable.”

”Could you ask everyone to stop for a moment?”

”Clef! Clef!”

The leader nodded repeatedly.

If it was an order from the Great God...

Of course it would obey.

Soon enough...

Silence returned.

Feeling the unusual atmosphere surrounding him, Chen Mo looked seriously at the entire Clefairy tribe.

”I think you’ve misunderstood something.”

”I’m just a human with a rather unusual ability.”

”I’m not the divine being who protected you and brought you from another world into this one.”

”Think about it carefully.”

”If I were truly your god...”

”Why would I bother handing you Moon Stones?”

”Wouldn’t it be much simpler to use divine power to send you straight back to your home planet?”

He patiently explained while carefully observing their reactions.

Just as expected...

Confusion gradually appeared on several Clefable’s faces.

But then—

The lead Clefable unexpectedly stepped forward.

It looked at Chen Mo with utmost caution.

”...Clef...”

”Great God... is this another test?”

”...”

Chen Mo suddenly had a headache.

Then...

A scene from the original anime flashed through his mind.

The Clefairy living on Mt. Moon had once gathered around an enormous Moon Stone, dancing and praying.

Back then...

Ash’s Pikachu had explained to everyone...

That giant Moon Stone was the guardian deity of the Clefairy.

”I see...”

”So it’s because of the Moon Stones.”

Chen Mo spread his hand once more.

This time...

Not just Moon Stones.

Every kind of Evolution Stone began materializing one after another from his palm, each radiating its own distinct energy.

He had assumed that would finally clear everything up.

Instead...

The lead Clefable’s expression became even more reverent.

Even the Clefairy and Clefable who had begun doubting themselves immediately regained absolute certainty.

Their expressions practically screamed—

We knew it!

You really are the Great God!

”W-What is happening?”

Even Chen Mo was bewildered.

How is explaining making things worse?

Logically speaking...

If the Clefairy worshipped Moon Stones as divine...

Then why...

”...Hm?”

Suddenly...

A memory surfaced.

The Clefairy in Greenfield City...

Each carrying different Evolution Stones...

Giving them away to shop owners.

Compared to the rare Berries...

Evolution Stones might have been worth slightly less.

But whether in the games...

Or reality...

They were undeniably precious treasures.

After all...

Even Steven Stone—the famous treasure hunter who wandered everywhere with his Aggron searching for rare minerals—

Couldn’t guarantee he’d find an Evolution Stone every time he went digging.

Yet these Clefairy...

Not only had they gathered enormous quantities of Moon Stones—the stones they themselves evolved with...

They had somehow collected every other variety of Evolution Stone as well.

How?

There was clearly a missing piece.

And it was probably the key reason they viewed him the way they did.

Naturally...

The Clefairy dared not conceal anything from their supposed deity.

Before long...

Chen Mo pieced together the truth from their explanations.

Everything...

Went back to the very first days after they arrived in this world.

Faced with an unfamiliar Earth...

The Clefairy, as complete outsiders...

Had struggled immensely.

Finding edible food.

Gathering materials needed to repair the spacecraft.

Every step had been painfully difficult.

Especially...

Finding energy sources.

On their homeworld...

Moon Stones had been an incredibly common resource.

But after arriving on Earth...

They discovered finding even a single Moon Stone was unbelievably difficult.

It had taken them half an entire year...

Just to gather a dozen or so.

Despair.

Every Clefairy had felt utterly hopeless.

Repairing the spacecraft alone was already an enormous undertaking.

Adding Moon Stone collection on top of that...

None of them knew how many years would pass before they could ever return to the stars.

Then...

Just like that moment...

When they had accepted death in the freezing void of space...

Only for Earth to suddenly appear before them...

Another miracle occurred.

When the entire tribe once again fell into despair...

Countless Evolution Stones suddenly rained down from the sky.

Another miracle.

”The Great God!”

”The Great God has always been watching over us!”

From that day onward...

Every Clefairy firmly believed there existed an unseen deity silently protecting them from the shadows.

So...

When they witnessed Chen Mo summoning Evolution Stones in exactly the same fashion...

They immediately concluded...

He was that very god.

”By the way, Clefable.”

”I’ve pretty much figured everything out.”

”But I have one more question.”

Chen Mo pointed toward the conspicuous dark-purple crystal resting among the Moon Stones.

”Did the Evolution Stones begin falling from the sky...”

”Only after you found this crystal?”

”...Clef?”

The Clefable looked confused.

Even so...

It honestly nodded.

Moon Stones originated from outer space.

To the Clefairy...

The strange energy radiating from the dark-purple crystal felt somewhat similar to that of Moon Stones.

Because of that...

Back when Moon Stones had been nearly impossible to find...

They had seriously considered using the crystal as an alternative energy source.

”Good.”

”Now I finally understand.”

”Unfortunately...”

”I really am not your god.”

”I’m simply an ordinary traveler passing through.”

Chen Mo noticed...

The moment he denied being their deity again...

Several Clefairy immediately looked heartbroken.

As though they had just been abandoned by the god they worshipped.

Unable to help laughing, Chen Mo hurriedly pointed toward the crystal.

”The one who caused Moon Stones to fall from the sky...”

”Is actually that dark-purple crystal.”

”That’s the ’Great God’ you’ve been talking about.”

”Clef?!”

The Clefable looked from the crystal...

Then back to Chen Mo.

Its face was filled with suspicion.

Seeing that, Chen Mo patiently continued.

”This crystal is called the Cocoon of Slumber.”

”Inside it sleeps a Pokémon called Jirachi.”

”That’s right.”

”There’s a living Pokémon inside.”

”It isn’t some kind of energy source for your spacecraft.”

”...Clef...”

The Clefable was stunned.

Compared to their barren, desolate homeworld...

Earth had already shown them countless incredible wonders.

But...

A Pokémon sleeping inside a crystal?

That was something they had never even imagined.

Chen Mo continued.

”Jirachi is the Pokémon that represents wishes.”

”According to legend...”

”It possesses the mysterious power to grant the wishes of humans and Pokémon alike.”

”So...”

”The Evolution Stones that rained down from the sky...”

”Were almost certainly gathered for you through Jirachi’s power.”

”So if you’re going to worship anyone...”

”Jirachi is the true god you should be thanking.”

The stone...

Was actually the Great God?!

Needless to say...

The entire Clefairy tribe was shaken to its core.

At the lead Clefable’s command...

Everyone temporarily stopped working on the spacecraft.

With extreme care...

They lifted the Cocoon of Slumber from the pile of Evolution Stones...

And placed it upon a neatly flattened stone pedestal.

Apparently hoping to provide their deity with a comfortable resting place...

One Clefairy even hurried back into the spacecraft...

Returning with a soft pillow.

Though worn and clearly patched several times...

It gently tucked the Cocoon onto the cushion.

Watching the Clefairy surrounding Jirachi with utmost reverence...

Chen Mo couldn’t help suspecting...

Had he not just explained that Jirachi was asleep inside the cocoon...

The Clefairy would probably have started dancing around it exactly as they had around him moments earlier.

At that moment...

Marshadow’s childish voice echoed inside Chen Mo’s mind.

”About Jirachi...”

”Can it still grant wishes while it’s asleep?”

Chen Mo gazed toward the purple cocoon surrounded by the Clefairy.

Then answered inwardly.

”Honestly...”

”I don’t know.”

”You don’t know?”

”Isn’t that perfectly normal?”

Chen Mo replied calmly.

”I don’t know everything.”

”Marshadow.”

”You’ve been with me ever since Evergreen Forest.”

”So you should already understand.”

”I possess a rather unique ability.”

”As long as I personally see a Pokémon...”

”I can understand nearly everything about its species.”

”I can even determine an individual Pokémon’s emotional state and physical condition.”

”But...”

”There’s one condition.”

”It doesn’t work on Legendary Pokémon.”

”For example...”

”I can’t read your emotions or physical condition.”

”As for everything I know about Legendary Pokémon...”

”You already know my previous world was rather unusual.”

”My knowledge comes from there.”

”But compared to reality...”

”There are always differences.”

”Just like Raikou.”

”The real Raikou you described to me...”

”Is somewhat different from the one I remembered.”

Inside Chen Mo’s shadow...

Marshadow slowly nodded.

Then...

A realization suddenly struck it.

Chen Mo had just openly revealed one of his greatest secrets.

From a human’s perspective...

Didn’t that mean...

He trusted Marshadow completely?

Even though...

Marshadow itself had never truly opened up.

Even though...

It still hid countless secrets.

”...Idiot...”

”Hm?”

”Marshadow.”

”That’s a little unfair.”

”I explained everything to you sincerely...”

”And you still called me an idiot.”

”...”

After a long silence...

Marshadow finally muttered in an almost inaudible voice,

”...S...sorry...”

This time...

It was Chen Mo’s turn to freeze.

Marshadow...

Actually apologizing?

That proud Pokémon?

A whirlwind of thoughts instantly swept through Chen Mo’s mind.

Then—

Marshadow suddenly raised its voice.

”Idiot!”

”I’m still inside your shadow!”

”I can feel all your emotions!”

”...”

”Hmph.”

Marshadow snorted.

”I’m not the kind of Pokémon who refuses to admit when I’m wrong.”

”I’m Marshadow.”

”Alright, alright.”

”You’re Marshadow.”

”I’ll remember that.”

Chen Mo smiled.

He said nothing more.

Marshadow remained silent for a while.

Still feeling strangely awkward...

It asked another question.

”There’s something else I’m curious about.”

”How exactly does Jirachi make wishes come true?”

”It’s actually pretty simple.”

”Don’t overthink it.”

Chen Mo explained.

”Take the Moon Stones Jirachi gave the Clefairy.”

”It most likely used Teleport.”

”It simply transferred Moon Stones from somewhere else to this location.”

”It only looked like they appeared out of thin air.”

”...Hm?”

Marshadow sounded puzzled.

”In that case...”

”Does that mean the Berry orchard we passed earlier...”

”Was also teleported here from somewhere else?”

”...”

Only then...

Did Chen Mo finally remember...

The incredibly lush Berry forest he had temporarily forgotten.

Countless images flashed through his mind.

Slowly...

He turned toward the dark-purple crystal once again.

His expression changed completely.

The next second—

He pulled out a Poké Ball.

”Pidgeotto!”

”I’m counting on you!”

White light burst forth.

A powerful gust of wind swept across the valley.

Before the bewildered eyes of every Clefairy...

Chen Mo mounted Pidgeotto and shot into the sky.

Under the brilliant blue heavens...

Looking down upon the landscape below...

He fell into complete shock.

Inside the sinkhole...

The lush, vibrant Berry forest stretched endlessly.

Outside it...

The surrounding land was sparse, dry, and yellow.

The contrast...

Could not have been more striking.
