Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

”So this thing... isn’t it the same item you gave Gible during the Pikachu Cup?”

Marshadow’s childish voice echoed inside Chen Mo’s mind.

”Yeah.”

Chen Mo silently confirmed Marshadow’s guess.

Detect Eye only worked on living Pokémon. Naturally, it had no effect on an inanimate held item like the Dragon Fang.

The main reason Chen Mo was so certain the item Haxorus had given Gible was a Dragon Fang was simple:

This wasn’t the first time he had seen one.

The first time had come from the system.

Back when Pichu had just become his partner, Chen Mo had wanted to strengthen the still-weak little Pichu while also making future expeditions into the wilderness a bit safer.

So he had purchased a Light Ball from the system shop and given it to Pichu.

After that—

It gradually became a tradition in Chen Mo’s household.

Every Pokémon that joined his team would receive a suitable power-enhancing item purchased from the system shop.

The Dragon Fang was one of the two items Chen Mo had chosen for Gible.

The other was Soft Sand.

After testing things with Pidgeotto, Chen Mo had already confirmed something:

Unlike in the games, where a Pokémon could only hold one item, the enhancement items purchased from the system could all be used simultaneously, as long as they weren’t duplicates and matched the Pokémon’s typing.

Having already seen a Dragon Fang once before, Chen Mo naturally recognized it immediately.

However—

One particular detail had always bothered him.

Since the system never provided any instructions for its items, when Pichu first used the Light Ball, it had merely touched it lightly—

And the Light Ball had naturally fused directly into Pichu’s body.

At the time, Chen Mo assumed that was just a special case.

But later, when Pidgeotto used the Sharp Beak Chen Mo had prepared for it, the same thing happened.

A light touch—

And the Sharp Beak melted into Pidgeotto’s body.

The same was true afterward for the Silk Scarf, Spell Tag, Black Glasses, Mystic Water, Dragon Fang, and Soft Sand.

All of them fused directly into the Pokémon.

So—

Since Chen Mo had never encountered real stat-enhancing items before, he had subconsciously believed that all such items worked that way.

But now...

It was obvious that wasn’t the case.

The evidence was simple.

Gible had already fused with one Dragon Fang from the system.

Yet when Fraxure handed over this second Dragon Fang just now...

It had been carrying the item in its arms the entire time.

”So that’s how it is…”

The doubts Chen Mo had held for a long time were finally answered.

Without being falsely modest, thanks to his memories from his previous life and the help of Detect Eye, Chen Mo’s methods of raising and training Pokémon were indeed a little ahead of the trainers of this era.

But—

The gap shouldn’t have been so enormous.

Yet judging from the Pikachu Cup, after only a few short months, Chen Mo’s Pokémon had far surpassed everyone else’s.

Even Gible, which had only recently hatched, had reached the Top 16—and wasn’t even the weakest Pokémon among those finalists.

Honestly...

The more he thought about it, the more absurd it seemed.

After all, Gible belonged to the category of Pokémon known for late blooming.

As a pseudo-legendary hatchling, it should have developed more slowly than most Pokémon.

Yet Gible was improving every single day—

Almost exactly like little Pichu had in the past.

So the question became:

What was causing this unusual phenomenon?

Besides Chen Mo’s carefully planned training programs and the Pokémon’s own hard work...

The greatest variable was undoubtedly the type-enhancing items purchased from the system.

Back then, after fusing with the Light Ball, Pichu immediately gained full control over the electricity stored inside its body.

Under normal circumstances, it no longer suffered from uncontrollable electrical leaks.

Clearly—

The Light Ball, and all the other items purchased from the system, did more than simply increase move power.

They were actively accelerating the Pokémon’s growth.

Now compare that with the real Dragon Fang Gible was holding.

Without question—

The magical items sold by the system were fundamentally different from the naturally existing items of this world.

While Chen Mo was pondering the difference between the system’s Dragon Fang and the real one, the livestream had already exploded because of his earlier remarks.

[Dragon Fang? Just from the name it sounds incredible! Fraxure got beaten up so badly trying to obtain it. Teacher Mo, this can’t just be some decoration, right?]

[Teacher Mo already called it a treasure. Of course it’s valuable.]

[So what exactly does it do?]

[Since it’s called Dragon Fang, it must have something to do with teeth! Let me guess—it strengthens a Dragon-type Pokémon’s teeth and jaws, increasing the power of biting attacks!]

[Bro, I can tell you’ve read the Pokédex a lot, but you mixed things up. Dragon Jaw isn’t a move—it’s an Ability. The Pokédex doesn’t even list which Pokémon has it yet since Dragon-type data is still incomplete.]

[Still, the idea makes sense. Even if Dragon Jaw isn’t a move, there are plenty of biting moves. Maybe Dragon Fang boosts those?]

[...Something about that feels off.]

”The direction of your guesses is good, but some parts are indeed mistaken.”

After Pikachu poked the back of his head, Chen Mo finally snapped out of his thoughts.

He glanced at the scrolling comments before beginning his explanation.

”I’ve mentioned something similar during previous streams.”

”Whether it’s Dragon Claw, Dragon Tail, or any other move that attacks using a body part, the body itself certainly affects the move’s strength.”

”But the more important factor is the Pokémon’s elemental energy, and how effectively that energy is concentrated into the attacking body part.”

”And the reason Dragon Fang is considered such a precious treasure among many Dragon-type Pokémon…”

”…is because it increases the power of Dragon-type moves.”

”Yes—all Dragon-type moves.”

”There’s no restriction based on which body part is used.”

”As for exactly how much stronger it makes them...”

Chen Mo smiled.

”That’s a great question.”

”My answer is…”

”I don’t know.”

His sudden deadpan response caught both the livestream audience and Mo Yu’s father completely off guard.

Seeing everyone’s reactions, Chen Mo calmly continued.

”I’m not joking.”

”I already said earlier that I actually don’t know much about Dragon Fang.”

”Everything I just told you is basically all I know.”

”There’s no helping it.”

”I’m not omniscient.”

”Take the Pokédex all of you use now.”

”If you pay attention, you’ll notice that the entries—especially for common Pokémon—are updated every so often.”

”The details become more complete over time.”

”Why?”

”Because behind the scenes, there are many researchers working tirelessly where none of us can see.”

”So Dragon Fang is the same.”

”Through certain channels and... certain special methods... I happened to learn a little basic information about it ahead of the researchers.”

”But only that much.”

Ever since his identity as the Hero of Ideals had become public, Chen Mo had gained plenty of new headaches—

But it had also conveniently patched many of the inconsistencies from his earlier livestreams.

After all...

Wasn’t it perfectly normal for the Hero of Ideals to know a few secrets about Pokémon that ordinary people didn’t?

Just as Mo Yu’s father was inwardly marveling at Chen Mo’s broad-mindedness—truly worthy of being both the government’s chosen representative and the Hero of Ideals—

Chen Mo suddenly changed the subject.

”Although I don’t know exactly how much Dragon Fang increases the power of Dragon-type moves...”

”Based on my own estimates, taking the Pokémon’s condition into account…”

”A normal Dragon Fang should probably increase their power by about ten percent.”

Setting aside the special items sold by the system...

The reason Chen Mo phrased it cautiously was because, besides the differences between reality and the games, Dragon Fang’s in-game bonus had also varied across generations.

Some generations gave a 10% boost.

Others gave 20%.

Choosing the lower estimate meant that even if future testing proved him wrong, it wouldn’t be too embarrassing.

What Chen Mo hadn’t expected was—

The moment he casually mentioned ten percent—

The livestream completely erupted.

[Teacher Mo! Give me back the emotional moment from one second ago!]

[Exactly! You said you didn’t know anything, but now you’re casually throwing out a ten percent boost? That’s incredibly specific!]

[Hmph! Such a smooth-talking man... but I like it. Hehe.]

[Seriously though, as a trainer, hearing ”ten percent” shocked me. Do you realize what that means? If my Gloom’s STAB moves had been ten percent stronger back then, maybe we would’ve made the Top 16 in the Pikachu Cup!]

[A full ten percent is ridiculous. No wonder Fraxure got beaten half to death trying to obtain Dragon Fang. In the end, that old Haxorus must’ve gone easy on it.]

[Not necessarily...]

At that moment, Mo Yu finally pieced everything together.

A Dragon Fang like this was clearly one of the Axew tribe’s greatest treasures.

To obtain it, Fraxure had first needed to prove its strength.

But in the end—

It had failed.

Although its father, Haxorus, had held back throughout the battle, it had also consistently opposed Fraxure’s unreasonable request.

Without the elderly Haxorus stepping in, the matter would have ended there.

But to say the old Haxorus had simply softened...

Mo Yu didn’t believe that.

He remembered what had happened after Fraxure could no longer fight.

Once the elderly Haxorus had stopped the battle, it spoke privately with the exhausted Fraxure.

Since Mo Yu couldn’t understand Pokémon speech, he had no idea what they said.

But moments later...

The entire Axew tribe had fallen into chaos because of Fraxure’s roaring.

Even Fraxure’s own father had looked at it with deep disappointment.

Back then, Mo Yu hadn’t understood why.

Now...

It all made sense.

Fraxure had probably revealed the real reason it wanted Dragon Fang—

To give it to Gible.

No wonder the Axew tribe had become furious.

Knowing full well that Dragon Fang was the tribe’s sacred treasure, Fraxure still wanted to give it to a complete outsider.

Anyone would have been angry.

But then another question arose.

Under such circumstances...

How had Fraxure still obtained the Dragon Fang?

The elderly Haxorus’ decision definitely wasn’t simple kindness.

Mo Yu suddenly recalled something.

When they had first arrived at the Axew settlement...

After meeting the elderly Haxorus inside the cave, Axew’s father had quickly called Mo Yu away.

Leaving only Chen Mo and the elderly Haxorus behind.

Now everything fit together.

The elderly Haxorus must have learned from Fraxure that Gible belonged to Teacher Mo.

The Dragon Fang...

Was ultimately a gift offered out of respect for Teacher Mo.

With the explanations from several sharp-eyed viewers, the livestream audience quickly pieced everything together as well.

[Now THAT’S what you call prestige!]

[Ever since Teacher Mo’s identity as the Hero of Ideals was revealed, so many confusing details from earlier streams suddenly make perfect sense. Huge thanks to everyone explaining this. Just because of Teacher Mo’s identity, the Axew tribe willingly gave away one of its greatest treasures. That’s unbelievable.]

[Seriously, it feels so satisfying. Can someone compile all the old livestream moments that only make sense after the Hero of Ideals reveal? I want to experience that ”everything clicks” feeling all over again.]

[With Dragon Fang, little Gible finally got another power-up. It’s slowly catching up to its older teammates.]

The chat remained lively.

Chen Mo said nothing.

After hearing Mo Yu’s story, he had already understood that the elderly Haxorus had its own reasons for giving away the Dragon Fang.

But right now—

The Pokémon he was most concerned about...

Was the one who had insisted on giving the Dragon Fang to Gible.

Looking at the hesitant little Gible, Chen Mo spoke softly.

”Go on.”
