Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

The next morning—

Warm golden sunlight filtered through the clouds, spilling over the lush forest and draping the entire world in a sacred glow.

Chen Mo took a deep breath of the fresh morning air as he admired the peaceful scenery before him, feeling much of yesterday’s fatigue melt away.

Then...

He glanced at the livestream chat.

[You scoundrel! You actually remembered to go live? According to the time you promised last night, you’re a whole hour late today!]

[I stayed up all night just to find out what that surprise was supposed to be! Teacher Mo, I’m begging you—please tell us already! It’s stopped being a surprise and become a horror story!]

[Teacher Mo, we know you’ve got your reasons, so how about this? You don’t have to say it directly. Our group spent all night discussing it and came up with several theories. You only need to answer yes or no.]

[Here’s the theory with the most support. Last night, Teacher Mo said we wouldn’t necessarily need to catch Pokémon in the designated zones because the government would be organizing a special event anyone interested could join. So we think the government is planning a large-scale Pokémon-catching event. The biggest advantage would be that we wouldn’t have to wander around designated zones looking for Pokémon ourselves. And where would those Pokémon come from? Simple! Remember Mount Cangqing? The government earned the trust of many Pokémon there through goodwill and ended up partnering with a large number of them.]

[Good morning! Some of these usernames look really familiar. Weren’t you all saying you’d unfollow last night? (LOL)]

[I did unfollow! Doesn’t mean I can’t still watch the stream. I’m freeloading now!]

[Feels like there aren’t many viewers today.]

[Even if Xiaopo Station’s popularity numbers don’t equal viewer count, the stream has already hit over a hundred million popularity right after going live. I also heard the mirrored streams on other platforms are doing just as well. That’s still ”not many”?]

[Why does Teacher Mo look like he didn’t sleep well...?]

Perfect.

Found a way to change the subject.

Chen Mo immediately took the opportunity.

”Sorry about that. Something came up last night, so today’s stream started a little later than planned.”

His thoughts drifted back to the previous night.

After fleeing from the mysterious pink Pokémon...

Gible’s return had immediately awakened Pidgeotto, who’d been sleeping in the treetops.

The two Pokémon discussed things briefly before waking Chen Mo as well.

Curiosity piqued, Chen Mo gathered the rest of his awakened Pokémon and headed to the stream where Gible had spotted the mysterious Pokémon.

The result?

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Poor Gible had nearly panicked on the spot, repeatedly insisting that it really had seen a pink Pokémon searching the river and describing everything it had witnessed in detail.

Naturally...

Chen Mo believed Gible.

He led everyone in searching the surrounding area.

Unfortunately...

They found absolutely nothing.

The only result was accidentally disturbing a family of Bidoof sleeping nearby and causing quite a commotion.

...

It wasn’t long before Chen Mo’s animated retelling successfully distracted most of the viewers.

[Damn it! Teacher Mo, you’ve changed! Something that important happened and you didn’t start a stream? Don’t give me that ”it was too late” excuse. Remember Hongjing Slope Forest? I’d have watched no matter how late it was!]

[So... did little Gible see wrong? Or did the mysterious pink Pokémon simply leave before you arrived?]

[Pink stands out at night, and Gible said it was Fairy-type... Hold on, I’m checking the Pokédex to narrow down the possibilities.]

[Why do I get the feeling Teacher Mo already knows the answer...?]

”My apologies.”

”Not starting the stream was entirely my fault.”

”My original plan was to begin streaming after we’d found the pink Pokémon.”

”I just didn’t expect it to run away so quickly.”

”However...”

”I’ve already figured out what that pink Pokémon most likely was.”

Perhaps because he genuinely felt guilty toward the audience lately...

Chen Mo didn’t keep them in suspense this time.

He directly shared his conclusion.

Based on Gible’s description...

A round pink body...

A Fairy-type aura...

The possibilities were actually very limited.

Two Pokémon immediately came to mind.

The Balloon Pokémon that loved singing—

Jigglypuff.

And the extremely rare Fairy Pokémon—

Clefairy.

Both matched Gible’s description perfectly.

However...

Although Chen Mo had never personally encountered either species and couldn’t use Eye of Detection on them...

He still remembered quite a few details from his previous life.

First...

The Clefairy line.

Besides being extraordinarily rare...

They generally chose to live deep in secluded mountain ranges, far away from human civilization.

The temporary campsite Chen Mo had chosen certainly had dense forests nearby...

But overall, it was still close to areas frequently visited by humans.

The highway was only a few kilometers away.

On the drive over, he’d even seen houses built by local residents.

As for the other suspect...

Jigglypuff.

A Normal/Fairy-type Pokémon.

Not only were Jigglypuff much more common than Clefairy...

Unlike Clefairy, they possessed an innate love of singing.

Many had a strong desire to perform.

As a result...

They occasionally appeared near places inhabited by humans.

The answer was obvious.

Jigglypuff.

It has to be you.

...

After breakfast, Chen Mo and his Pokémon resumed their journey.

This time...

Instead of remaining quiet like yesterday, he spent the drive chatting with viewers about Jigglypuff.

After all...

It was one of the anime’s most iconic Pokémon.

Even without the system’s help, there was plenty worth talking about.

Especially that Jigglypuff from the original anime.

Searching everywhere for someone capable of staying awake through its songs...

It secretly followed Ash across multiple regions.

Nearly every region featured an episode centered around it.

Even Legendary Pokémon rarely received that kind of treatment.

Its presence had been unforgettable.

[One song puts an entire town to sleep?! Holy crap! Jigglypuff is the real walking natural disaster! Even Legendary Pokémon don’t sound that scary!]

[Feels like Teacher Mo is telling fantasy stories again.]

[If I had a Jigglypuff like that, I’d dominate the Pikachu Cup! Xiao You? Xiao Qiao? Even Teacher Mo himself would collapse!]

[Teacher Mo might not collapse, but according to him, Jigglypuff’s Sing affects everyone indiscriminately. You’d probably enter every match on your own two feet... and leave carried out on a stretcher.]

[Well, Teacher Mo did say these were stories from another world and everyone should judge for themselves. Basically, we’re just supposed to enjoy them as stories.]

[Pretty interesting, but... Teacher Mo, aren’t you going the wrong way? Aren’t you supposed to get back on the highway?]

[Wait... are you planning to stay here for a while and search for Jigglypuff?]

Noticing everyone’s confusion, Chen Mo kept his eyes on the road as he answered.

”The forest is far too large.”

”Trying to find a single Jigglypuff would be incredibly difficult.”

”However, I’ll report Gible’s possible sighting to the Bureau.”

”They’ll probably send people to investigate.”

”As for me...”

”I checked the map earlier.”

”The nearest destination seems to be a place called Greenfield City.”

”It’s a rather nice name.”

The reason for his sudden detour into town...

Was Gible’s Dragon Fang.

The one Fraxure had given it before they left.

Although Chen Mo still had no idea how Dragon Fang functioned in reality...

For a Dragon-type like Gible...

Using it seemed surprisingly intuitive.

The instant Gible had accepted it...

It could clearly sense an ancient yet powerful aura emanating from the fang.

A strength belonging solely to Dragon-type Pokémon.

And somehow...

It instinctively knew how to draw upon that power.

Taking this into consideration...

Chen Mo had decided to stop by a nearby town before continuing the journey.

His plan was simple.

Without damaging the Dragon Fang itself...

Have it crafted into an accessory.

Then securely attach it to Gible.

Given Gible’s current size...

Setting the Dragon Fang into a bracelet seemed like the best option.

”We’re almost there.”

Chen Mo quietly spoke while the city gradually appeared ahead.

Greenfield City was the largest town within dozens of kilometers.

A county-level city.

With plenty of shops.

Finding a craftsman wouldn’t be difficult.

Just then...

As the SUV slowly passed through Greenfield City’s central square...

A huge flock of black-and-white bird Pokémon suddenly descended from the sky.

Already accustomed to filming, Gengar smoothly swung the camera toward them.

[Are those... Pidove and Tranquill?]

[Yep! The Bureau has mentioned the Pidove line several times. They’re considered one of the best Pokémon for beginner Trainers. They naturally like humans and are extremely obedient once partnered with a Trainer.]

[You can find Pidove flocks here too? And that many? Are they wild?]

The sudden appearance of the flock drew the attention of many nearby drivers.

Almost as if everyone had agreed beforehand...

Traffic gradually slowed.

When the traffic light turned red...

Many people leaned toward the square to watch.

Chen Mo frowned slightly.

Among all Pokémon types...

Normal-types were the most common.

The ”Normal” type also represented ordinary and widespread species.

Among the regional bird Pokémon...

Pidgey, Spearow, Hoothoot, Taillow, Starly, Pikipek...

And Pidove...

Were all common avian Pokémon.

Especially the Pidgey and Pidove lines.

Because they lived close to human settlements...

And possessed exceptionally gentle temperaments...

They had become two of the most popular bird Pokémon among Trainers throughout Zhuxia.

Both had appeared frequently during the Pikachu Cup.

The Bureau itself had also raised large numbers of them.

Judging from the shine of their feathers and their energetic appearance...

The flock before him clearly wasn’t wild.

They had obviously been well cared for over a long period.

Which raised a question.

According to current Bureau regulations...

Any city keeping large numbers of Pokémon had to register them.

Yet among the official list Chen Mo had recently reviewed...

There had been no mention of Greenfield City together with Pidove.

”Looks like I’ll have to ask someone what’s going on.”

Since everything was happening openly in broad daylight...

He doubted there was anything suspicious.

Still...

Since he’d already happened upon it...

It wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Unfortunately...

Chen Mo had once again underestimated just how famous he’d become.

Even wearing both a mask and a cap...

The elderly owner of a handmade jewelry shop—

Already well past fifty, with hair gone mostly white—

Recognized him only moments after he spoke.

His attitude instantly became unbelievably enthusiastic.

He repeatedly praised Chen Mo as the pride of the nation.

He even insisted on making Gible’s Dragon Fang bracelet free of charge.

Only after a lengthy discussion did Chen Mo finally persuade him to accept payment.

Seeing there was no longer any point hiding...

Chen Mo simply called Gengar out from the Shadow World.

The livestream instantly exploded.

[As expected of Teacher Mo! Fans from three-year-old kids all the way to eighty-year-old grandparents! Is there any public figure more popular than him?!]

[Hahaha! I already had a feeling back in the car. Teacher Mo prepared so carefully, yet still got recognized. Incredible.]

[Anyone from Greenfield City watching? Now’s your chance to meet Teacher Mo in person!]

[After today’s experience, I bet Teacher Mo’s personality means he’ll permanently retreat into the wilderness and never visit unfamiliar cities outside Anping again.]

Though slightly troubled...

Chen Mo decided to take advantage of the opportunity.

”By the way...”

”The flock of Pidove and Tranquill in the square...”

”What’s the story behind them?”

”Oh, those?”

The elderly craftsman continued working while casually explaining.

”They aren’t wild.”

”They’re actually here because—”

Before he could finish—

A frantic shout suddenly echoed from the street outside.

”The Pink Demon Legion is back! Everyone, close your doors and windows! Don’t let them catch you again!”

The instant the words fell...

The outside world erupted into chaos.

People shouting.

Others cursing.

The rattling crash of metal shutters being pulled down.

The atmosphere became tense in an instant.

”The Pink Demon Legion?”

Chen Mo blinked in surprise.

But behind the workbench...

The white-haired old man’s expression changed dramatically.

His face turned pale with fear as he shouted,

”Quick!”

”Teacher Mo!”

”Close the front door immediately!”
