Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

There seemed to be a mysterious force connecting Pokémon and humans.

Because of that, many people believed that the highest level of cooperation between a trainer and their Pokémon was when the trainer no longer needed to speak at all—when a Pokémon could understand its trainer’s intentions through nothing more than the resonance of their hearts and execute them flawlessly.

However—

Not everyone could reach that realm.

Many beginner trainers frequently complained during Chen Mo’s streams that they couldn’t keep up with their Pokémon’s movements and had no idea how they were supposed to command them.

Well...

That was extremely common.

Pokémon were extraordinary lifeforms that far surpassed human common sense. Their reaction speeds and physical abilities were often far beyond those of humans. Even if moves required some charging time, coordinating effectively with a Pokémon still placed tremendous demands on the trainer.

Therefore—

Not everyone was suited to become a trainer.

It was a profession that relied heavily on talent, and as battles reached higher and higher levels, the demands placed upon the trainer only increased exponentially.

”That’s bad!”

Anping City.

Pikachu Cup Competitors’ Lounge.

The moment Zapdos entered its berserk state, every trainer’s face filled with anxiety.

Too fast!

The eruption had come far too quickly!

Many ordinary Pokémon could achieve explosive bursts of speed by mastering certain techniques.

But compared to Zapdos’s sudden outburst—

They weren’t even in the same league.

”It can’t take that attack! Absolutely can’t!”

Chen Haoran stared at the screen, his expression taut with tension.

His Munchlax was the type of Pokémon that lacked both movement speed and reaction speed.

As a result, Chen Haoran specialized in defensive counterattacks.

Typically, that meant enduring an attack that Munchlax could withstand and immediately retaliating using the momentum gained.

After all, Pokémon needed time to gather energy for moves, and reckless burst attacks placed a tremendous burden on the user. If one could survive the attack, a well-timed counterattack might instantly turn the battle around.

But—

Every trainer who had fought their way into the main tournament understood something.

What Chen Mo was facing now was completely different from the situations they encountered in ordinary battles.

A direct hit from a Legendary Pokémon’s all-out attack—

That wasn’t endurance.

That was suicide.

It’s over.

Just as many trainers closed their eyes, unwilling to watch what came next—

Someone suddenly shouted in disbelief.

”Holy shit!?”

A classic expletive.

The startled cry made everyone open their eyes again.

Then they saw it.

The sky beneath the thunderclouds was suddenly filled with Pidgeotto after Pidgeotto.

The countless lightning bolts that had been rushing toward the three Pokémon were being diverted and drawn away by the flock of duplicates.

”Double Team!? But when did it use it!?”

Someone exclaimed in shock.

Pidgeotto’s response had been absurdly fast.

It was as if it had been preparing for this moment all along.

Without needing a single command from Chen Mo, it had instantly chosen the perfect response.

”Gengar!”

Using the opening created by Pidgeotto’s Double Team, Gengar’s pressure was immediately reduced by more than half.

Facing the lightning bolt rushing toward it—

It hesitated not at all.

Stretching out its tiny arms, it erected a barrier before itself.

Protect!

A violent explosion erupted.

Gengar’s face twisted with effort.

Yet the excitement in its crimson eyes only intensified.

I can block it!

Even a Legendary Pokémon’s attack can be blocked by me, Gengar!

”CHIRP!!!”

Zapdos clearly hadn’t anticipated this development.

The timing of Pidgeotto’s clones was simply too perfect.

Although the real Pidgeotto still carried Pikachu on its back, Pidgeotto’s large size allowed Pikachu to simply lower its head and hide.

Zapdos had no way of determining which one was real.

In that case—

Destroy them all!

Zapdos let out another piercing cry.

Just as it prepared to command the lightning around its body to wipe out every Pidgeotto in sight—

A sharp pain suddenly surged through its body.

Something was burning deep inside it.

Zapdos’s expression changed dramatically.

It desperately tried to expel the abnormal flames causing the agony, but nothing worked.

The strange fire clung to it like gangrene, relentlessly devouring its life force.

”Pikachu, Thunderbolt!”

”Gengar, Shadow Ball!”

A cold voice rang out.

The next second—

Zapdos saw a massive bolt of electricity, intertwined with gold and azure light, blazing brilliantly through the sky.

Wrapped around that dual-colored lightning was a rapidly spinning Shadow Ball that grew larger and larger in its vision.

BOOM!!!

The overwhelming energies collided with Zapdos.

A violent shockwave exploded outward.

Smoke engulfed the center of the battlefield.

Countless viewers sat frozen before their screens.

The sudden reversal of offense and defense had happened in the blink of an eye.

Especially those who dreamed of becoming trainers—or already were trainers.

The impact struck them deeply.

”So strong... they’re really so strong...”

A’Hui stared at the screen and muttered.

At that moment, a familiar voice seemed to echo in his ears.

”Battles change in an instant. That’s why preparation before battle is so important.”

”How your Pokémon reacts in a crisis depends entirely on how you’ve trained them.”

”And don’t try to keep up with your Pokémon’s movements.”

”What we need to do is become the eyes that help our Pokémon seize opportunities.”

A’Hui froze.

Then excitement flooded his eyes.

He suddenly understood why Chen Mo had insisted on keeping the livestream running despite the danger.

”Brother Mo...”

”He’s using this battle to teach us.”

”To show us what a trainer should do when facing an opponent far stronger than themselves.”

The livestream chat exploded.

[I get the lesson, but Teacher Mo, you’re fighting a freaking Legendary Pokémon! This isn’t a teaching match! That said—this is AWESOME!]

[I’m at work right now. When Pikachu and Gengar’s attacks landed, our whole office started yelling.]

[Aren’t you afraid your boss will catch you slacking?]

[Why would we be? After hearing a Legendary Pokémon appeared, our boss started watching the stream with us.]

[A minute on stage, ten years off it. The coordination between Pidgeotto, Pikachu, and Gengar didn’t happen overnight.]

[Especially Pidgeotto. If those three survived Zapdos’s attack unharmed, Pidgeotto deserves the most credit.]

[Teacher Mo has definitely been training them with absurdly powerful opponents in mind.]

[That’s right! Why should Gengar fear a Legendary? Teacher Gengar has beaten one before!]

[Calm down. The battle isn’t over yet. Zapdos can still fly—it definitely still has fighting power!]

[Then why isn’t Teacher Mo attacking while he has the chance?]

As viewers questioned this, the smoke gradually dispersed.

Zapdos emerged once more.

Battered and ragged.

Yet still wrapped in fierce lightning.

The dangerous crackling of electricity filled everyone’s ears.

”Brother Mo...”

”What are you thinking?”

Even Qiao Cheng couldn’t understand why Chen Mo seemed so calm.

At that moment—

Zapdos struggled.

It screeched.

As if preparing another attack.

Everyone’s hearts leapt into their throats.

Yet Chen Mo simply said:

”Trying to attack me?”

”...”

Zapdos stared coldly at the young man protected by four Pokémon.

It said nothing.

Chen Mo chuckled.

”You can’t do it anymore, can you?”

”...”

”The moment I arrived at the power station, I already had a suspicion.”

”And after our first exchange...”

”I became completely certain.”

”Zapdos.”

”Your severe energy leakage...”

”You were seriously injured not long ago, weren’t you?”

The audience was stunned.

[Wait... so those weather effects are actually uncontrolled energy leakage?]

[That explains it! I was wondering why this Pokémon was permanently covered in special effects.]

[Legendary Pokémon creating phenomena sounds normal though. Remember Suicune in Viridian Forest? The fog? The rain?]

[The fake Suicune in Mount Cangqing looked normal.]

[That one doesn’t count!]

[Thank goodness. So it’s seriously injured. Teacher Mo should’ve said that earlier.]

[What are you worried about? As long as Teacher Gengar is here, even a healthy Zapdos would get suppressed!]

Chen Mo’s strength was undeniable.

Everyone had witnessed it.

But facing a true Legendary Pokémon alone still made people nervous.

Now, however, many felt reassured.

A wounded Zapdos.

A wounded Legendary.

That felt much more manageable.

Standing before the power station, Chen Mo calmly gazed up at Zapdos.

Legendary Pokémon could indeed alter the weather and create natural phenomena.

But that didn’t mean doing so came without cost.

When Suicune appeared in Viridian Forest surrounded by fog, it was largely because of humans.

Since the Burned Tower incident, the Legendary Beasts generally avoided humanity.

Unless necessary, they rarely showed themselves.

Suicune’s ability simply made it easy to conceal itself within mist.

As for the heavy rain in Viridian Forest—

That had been intentionally summoned to suppress Hydreigon.

Suicune couldn’t fly.

Hydreigon could.

Rain had been the perfect answer.

The copy Suicune in Mount Cangqing was similar.

Its Rain Dance had merely enhanced its combat ability.

As it suffered increasing damage from Marshadow-controlled Haunter, the rain weakened accordingly.

That was only natural.

But Zapdos was different.

The lightning constantly surrounding its body wasn’t helping it.

Instead, it was continuously draining its energy.

Even after taking repeated hits from Pikachu and Gengar, Zapdos hadn’t withdrawn the phenomenon.

Which meant one thing.

The lightning wasn’t intentional.

It was uncontrolled energy leakage.

Combined with the pain visible whenever it used a move—

It was obvious.

This wasn’t the condition of a healthy Legendary Pokémon.

Even the fake Suicune had been stronger.

Looking at Zapdos’s exhausted body and involuntary spasms, Chen Mo understood.

This Zapdos was already at its limit.

A critically injured body.

Uncontrolled energy leakage.

Gengar’s special Will-O-Wisp.

Three layers of torment.

Zapdos—

What else do you have left?

Chen Mo smiled.

”I bet you’re thinking...”

”If you were healthy, you’d have crushed Pikachu, Pidgeotto, and Gengar already.”

”Being defeated by Pokémon like them...”

”Feels humiliating, doesn’t it?”

”...”

”But that’s reality.”

”Zapdos.”

”In the end, this happened because you’re too arrogant.”

”If you’d gone all out from the very beginning...”

”The winner might’ve been you.”

”Oh, and by the way...”

”Pikachu’s Thunderbolt.”

”Gengar’s Will-O-Wisp.”

”They hurt, don’t they?”

He laughed softly.

”Because of your arrogance.”

”Because you underestimated us.”

”You were defeated by opponents you considered insignificant.”

”So...”

”You lost.”

Zapdos’s eyes widened.

Wrapped in endless lightning, it descended like a mad god toward Chen Mo.

Yet Chen Mo remained calm.

There was only satisfaction in his gaze.

I’ve been waiting for this moment.

That’s why I didn’t attack immediately.

I wanted to see that expression.

Don’t underestimate humans.

And don’t bully them whenever you please.

You damned Pokémon.

”Finish it.”

Pikachu.

Gengar.

Pidgeotto.

Absol.

The four Pokémon had already been gathering power while Zapdos’s condition worsened.

”Kyii!”

”Teacher Mo!”

Panicked cries rang out behind him.

The wild Electric-type Pokémon that had been watching from the power station all rushed forward.

Shouts.

Electricity.

Roars.

Everything blended into chaos.

Chen Mo ignored them all.

His voice remained cold.

”Continue.”
