American Football: King of the Bay Area

In Week 10 of the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers would host the New York Giants. Without a doubt, this was not only the 49ers’ strongest opponent of the season but also the one that generated the most buzz.

The New York Giants are one of the most storied teams in the NFL. Founded in 1925, they bore witness to the rise and fall of football on the North American continent and etched a glorious history for themselves. More importantly, they were a team that belonged to New York—a city at the pinnacle of the world, where their every move drew immense attention.

The city of New York needs no introduction; its history is a story that could never be fully told. The world of sports alone offers an endless list of tales: the rivalry between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets has spanned the entire history of baseball, while the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets are major figures of discussion in their basketball league.

In the world of football, New York also boasts two teams: the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

Both teams possess rich legacies. Since the founding of the NFL, they have been an indispensable part of the Alliance, playing vital roles and forging their own brilliant histories, with both having won the Super Bowl.

The New York Giants, along with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins, belonged to the National League East.

Across the entire Alliance, their division had one of the longest, most complex, and most intense rivalry histories, second only to the National League North led by the Green Bay Packers. But even amid such fierce divisional competition, the New York Giants remained one of the division’s top powerhouses over the past thirty years.

Before the Super Bowl Era, the New York Giants won the league championship four times. After the start of the Super Bowl Era, they also won the Super Bowl three times, and their number of division titles was even more impressive.

Entering the 21st century, the New York Giants remained a force to be reckoned with. They made the playoffs six times and won the Super Bowl in the 2007 season. Compared to their three arch-rivals in the division, the Giants’ record was undoubtedly far superior.

Unfortunately, after back-to-back dominant seasons in 2007 and 2008, the New York Giants entered a painful transition period over the last two years, and their performance was inconsistent. They finished eight-and-eight in the 2009 season and ten-and-six in 2010. While these records were respectable, their poor divisional record caused them to miss the playoffs.

Despite this, no one could deny that the New York Giants were a force in the Alliance that could not be ignored, not only because of the success they’d accumulated over the past five or ten years, but also because they had an excellent quarterback: Eli Manning.

The Manning family. They were an incredibly important, traditional football family in the NFL.

It all began with Archie Manning, an outstanding quarterback in the Alliance during the seventies. He competed on the field for a full fourteen seasons and left his own mark on history.

In college, Archie’s performance was exceptional; he dominated the competition. He showed astonishing talent in both football and baseball and drew the attention of scouts, but in the end, Archie chose football.

The 1971 draft was hailed as a rare and exceptional year for quarterbacks, with at least four worthy of a first-round selection, making the competition incredibly fierce. The team that would later become the New England Patriots, then known as the Boston Patriots, held the first overall pick that year and selected quarterback Jim Plunkett from Stanford University. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints, a franchise only in its fifth year, used the second overall pick to select Archie.

Unfortunately, as a new team in the Alliance in the seventies, the New Orleans Saints had a chaotic team-building strategy and were never able to find a formula for victory. Archie practically dragged the entire team forward on his shoulders, but he was ultimately outmatched. After spending twelve seasons with the Saints Team, Archie was traded first to the Houston Oilers and then to the Minnesota Vikings, after which he chose to retire.

Failing to win a Super Bowl remained a lifelong regret for Archie, but he was a vital figure in the history of the New Orleans Saints. Not only was he inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame, but the University of Mississippi later retired his number 18 jersey. As a quarterback, Archie’s ability and talent were beyond doubt; it was just a pity he never found himself in the right situation at the right time.

After getting married, Archie had three sons: Cooper Manning, Peyton Manning, and Eli Manning. Cooper and Peyton were only two years apart, while Eli was a full five years younger than Peyton.

All three sons followed in their father’s footsteps, entering the world of football. Cooper was a wide receiver, while Peyton was a quarterback. Five years his junior, Eli later followed his father and older brother into the ranks of quarterbacks.

Because they were close in age, Cooper and Peyton spent their high school years together. The Manning combination was a duo that struck fear into their opponents on the field. With Cooper’s excellent hands and Peyton’s great passing instincts, they were simply dominant in high school. The chemistry between the brothers was at its peak. In Peyton’s sophomore year, the two led their team to a nine-win, one-loss season, drawing widespread attention.

Cooper and Peyton made a pact to go to college together, continue their dominance, and then enter the Professional Alliance together and make a name for themselves.

But fate was cruel. After entering college, Cooper found himself uncharacteristically dropping passes. A hospital examination revealed that he suffered from congenital spinal stenosis, a condition that could lead to paralysis or even threaten his life. With no other choice, Cooper’s football career came to an abrupt end.

After enduring the darkest period of his life, and with Cooper’s encouragement, Peyton rallied his spirits and returned to the field. Originally, Peyton’s jersey number was 14, but he later switched to his brother’s number, 18, carrying the dreams of both brothers as he moved forward.

Later, a legendary number 18 quarterback would emerge in the NFL.

As the youngest son of the Manning family, Eli was always the one who got picked on, like a toy for his two older brothers. As a child, he stumbled along trying to keep up with them, and even more so as he grew up. However, growing up surrounded by football, Eli gradually began to reveal his own talent for passing.

During his college years, Eli achieved incredible success under the national spotlight. At the University of Mississippi, he broke a series of school records held by his own father. This was especially notable because Peyton had chosen to attend the University of Tennessee, the arch-rival of the University of Mississippi, a decision that sparked immense controversy at the time. The youngest Manning son, however, returned to Archie’s alma mater to recreate his father’s glory.

By 2003, the Mannings’ second son, Peyton, had already become a dominant force in the Alliance and was named regular season MVP for the first time in his career. This only bolstered Eli’s already promising draft stock.

Peyton seemed to be a born leader: mature, steady, strategic, and far-sighted. But at critical moments, he always seemed to lack a ruthless edge. As a result, Peyton could effortlessly command games and dominate during the regular season, but he struggled to break through in the playoffs. It wasn’t until the 2006 season that he finally won his first career Super Bowl.

Eli, on the other hand, was different. He seemed to be a born gambler: bold, fierce, aggressive, and ruthlessly decisive. His performance was often inconsistent, but at critical moments, he could always unleash a powerful force to turn the tide against all odds. He inherited his father’s feel for passing, a trait he shared with Peyton, making him reliable when it counted.

At the 2004 Draft, Eli Manning was considered the consensus number one pick. However, the San Diego Lightning held the first overall pick that year, and Eli, through his father, made it clear that he refused to play for the Lightning.

It became an infamous affair in the Alliance, and the reasons were known only to the Manning family.

Rumor had it that Archie wanted his youngest son to go to the National League to avoid Peyton’s American League. This would prevent the brothers from facing each other too often and make the competition for playoff spots less brutal. The San Diego Lightning was an American League team.

Another rumor claimed that the terrible management of the San Diego Lightning had so thoroughly disappointed Eli and Archie during their pre-draft visit that it led to their subsequent refusal.

Yet another theory suggested it was because of Ryan Leaf, the Alliance’s biggest draft bust from Peyton’s draft class, who had his downfall with the San Diego Lightning. This theory held that Leaf’s failure had less to do with his own ability and more to do with the toxic atmosphere and poor management within the Lightning organization, which stifled his talent.

But regardless of the rumors, the Mannings never publicly addressed the issue, and so it remains an unsolved mystery.

Later, at the draft, the San Diego Lightning defiantly selected Eli Manning anyway. Amidst a chorus of boos, Eli, with an awkward expression on his face, accepted the jersey and posed for photos. It became one of the most awkward moments in the history of the Alliance draft.

However, the Lightning had a trade in place. Immediately after selecting Eli, they traded him to the New York Giants. The price was Philip Rivers, whom the Giants had selected with the fourth overall pick, and several future draft picks, including a first-rounder the following year.

And so, Eli Manning became the franchise quarterback for the New York Giants.

After joining the Alliance, Eli quickly established himself. Following a disastrous rookie season, he led the New York Giants to the top of the National League East in his second year and had his breakthrough season in his fourth.

In the 2007 season, the New York Giants fought their way to the Super Bowl. Facing the New England Patriots, who had gone undefeated through the sixteen-game regular season, Eli completed a game-winning touchdown pass in the final moments to win the Super Bowl in a stunning upset, also earning the Super Bowl MVP title.

Perhaps Eli wasn’t as consistent as Peyton, but his ability was something no one could afford to underestimate.

The following week, Lu Ke was set to face Eli Manning—his first career encounter with the Manning family.
