American Football: King of the Bay Area

Alex Smith didn’t say any more. He sat quietly to the side, shifting over slightly to give Lu Ke some space to think for himself.

For a quarterback, the ability to think independently is an essential skill. They need different perspectives to open up their field of vision, but once that vision is broadened, they must still do the thinking themselves.

As a fellow quarterback with a wealth of game experience, Alex was precisely on Lu Ke’s wavelength, gradually helping Lu Ke regain his composure.

There was nothing wrong with their second-half play execution. The San Francisco 49ers had maintained the same characteristics and style from the first half, and the results of their drives were far from terrible.

Therefore, getting bogged down in tactical minutiae and trying to force a change in offensive rhythm wasn’t going to yield immediate results. What was more important was to be completely focused, to regain control of the tempo by reading the defense on every play, and to find the key to moving the ball again.

”Every down is different.”

This was a sentence that coaches had been saying since his very first day of learning football, and it continued all the way through middle school, college, and even into the Professional Alliance.

Before, Lu Ke had never truly understood the meaning of that sentence, but today, he was finally beginning to grasp its significance.

In a football game, with the same play, the same players, and the same opponents, every down required navigating a new set of variables. With twenty-two players on the field between the two teams, plus the coaching staff and strategy rooms providing real-time support from the sidelines, a single play could have countless variations.

Plays are static, but players are dynamic. A team’s tactical system is relatively fixed, with its own unique style. So, rather than picking faults at the tactical level, it was better to focus on the opportunities within each down. Even the simplest, most basic play could work wonders.

Easier said than done.

In the previous five weeks of games, Lu Ke had gotten into the habit of sitting on the sidelines, constantly studying the playbook. But now, he had to put the playbook aside for a moment, clear out all the distracting thoughts, completely empty his mind, and truly immerse himself in the game, seizing every subtle shift on the field and driving towards victory.

A suffocating tension filled Ford Field, as if a single spark could set the whole place ablaze. But this explosive feeling was starting to faintly excite Lu Ke: the bigger the stage, the more critical the moment, the more life-or-death the situation, the clearer and calmer his mind became.

Taking the field again, Lu Ke and the members of the offense arrived at their own 25-yard line—the previous return had successfully advanced the ball five yards, so the San Francisco 49ers would start their drive here.

Lu Ke let out a long breath, calming the storm of his emotions. He fixed his gaze on the defensive players across the line, recalling all the homework he’d done before the game. He matched their faces to the formations in his head, reading their alignment and positioning.

Three minutes and twenty-six seconds. The sense of urgency brought the faint taste of blood to the tip of his tongue as his adrenaline began to surge.

Slowly, Lu Ke bent down, getting into position to receive the snap. He listened to the roaring cheers thundering through the stadium. As his focus sharpened, the noise grew more and more distant until it vanished completely, leaving only perfect silence. Then, Lu Ke’s voice broke free from his throat and exploded across the gridiron:

”Hike!”

In the Shotgun Formation, Lu Ke caught the ball firmly with both hands, took just a small shuffle step to adjust, and tilted his chin up slightly to take in the semicircle of players before him. Without any hesitation, he decisively raised his right hand. Without putting much power behind it, he used a light toss, sending the football gliding through the air in a soft arc.

It was a short, five-yard pass aimed at the center of the field. It sailed over the Offense Line and Defense Line in front of him, dropping quickly into the linebackers’ defensive zone.

Vernon Davis, lined up on the inner right, and Logan Newman, on the left, both cut horizontally towards the inside. After a powerful six-yard sprint, they crisscrossed in the middle of the field. Vernon, running the outside route, disrupted the linebacker’s line of sight and blocked his forward momentum. In that split second, Logan made the catch.

One to block, one to receive. The dual Tight End play worked its magic again.

Leaping lightly, he plucked the football from the air and pulled it in. Logan’s feet never stopped moving. He lowered his shoulder and smashed through the onrushing outside linebacker. At the same time, a double screen from Crabtree and Gene blocked two defensive players from getting back, creating a narrow lane for Logan to advance.

First, he ran laterally from left to right, then came to a sudden stop, turned ninety degrees, and pushed straight ahead. After dodging a tackle, he continued forward at a thirty-degree angle to the left. In the end, Logan ran for a full thirteen yards before he was sandwiched by two players and forced out of bounds, ending the play.

A similar offensive play, a similar defensive formation, but this time, Lu Ke had spotted the small gap between the Offense Line and the linebackers. He fully utilized the dual Tight End play to get the first down, laying the foundation for a last-minute push. It was a good start.

But Lu Ke didn’t celebrate excessively. The opposing Defense Team was still fired up, and any lapse in concentration could spell disaster. So, Lu Ke waved his teammates forward to their own 36-yard line. They set up the play, got into formation, and then he calmed his mind again, focusing intently on the Defense Team across from them.

’Read the defense, read the defense, read the defense.’

Faintly, Lu Ke noticed something different.

In reality, the Lions Team’s defensive formation hadn’t changed much. It was almost identical to their alignment on the previous down. There was still a gap of about four yards between the Defense Line and the linebackers, as if they were baiting Lu Ke into repeating the previous play and making another pass.

But Lu Ke noticed that the outside linebacker to his left, Justin Durant, had his center of gravity shifted onto his right leg and right hand. On the previous play, he had stood slightly more upright, with his center of gravity relatively balanced.

It was such a subtle change that Lu Ke wasn’t entirely sure. Was it a trap set by the opponent, or had he, now that he’d calmed down, actually caught a shift through his keen observation? This uncertainty was something Lu Ke needed to confirm.

Without hesitating, Lu Ke’s gaze drifted to the outside linebacker on the other side, DeAndre Levy. He had shifted a tiny bit toward Lu Ke’s right—no more than half a step.

On the surface, it looked like man-to-man coverage, with Levi targeting Vernon on the right.

However, whether by coincidence or design, Levi’s center of gravity was leaning slightly to his own left, as if he was ready to explode off the line at any moment. ’Does this mean it’s a quarterback blitz? Are the two outside linebackers going to wrap around from both sides and try for the sack?’

There was no time for thinking or second-guessing. Lu Ke decided to trust his gut. He stood up straight and changed the play, shouting the new cadence loudly: three times to the left, three times to the right, and one last time facing the Defense Team. The change in play call didn’t cause a ripple among the San Francisco 49ers’ offense. All the players held their stances, their positions unchanged.

Lu Ke stood right behind the center, while Marcus Lynch was seven yards back, lined up directly behind him. They were showing a power run formation. But the 49ers’ offensive formations were always full of tricks and highly deceptive, so you could never take them at face value. Even a Shotgun Formation could end up as a running play.

”Hike!”

Like a general commanding a great army, Lu Ke gave the command. After taking the ball from Jonathan Goodwin’s hands, he turned and stepped back quickly, without any hesitation or delay. He extended his right hand, placing the football in mid-air. Then, like an accelerating high-speed train, Marcus charged forward, securely wrapping both hands around the football as Lu Ke released his right hand.

It was a running play.

After the handoff, Lu Ke’s feet didn’t stop. He pulled his right hand back to his chest, faking as if he still had the ball. He quickly backpedaled, turned, and began looking for a passing target. And then, the unfolding situation on the field came into full view—

Just as he suspected! It was a blitz!

The two outside linebackers took huge strides around the ends of the Offense Line, single-mindedly closing in on Lu Ke. But Durant and Levi had only just crossed the line of scrimmage, not even getting close to Lu Ke, when they saw Marcus Lynch, who had accelerated to top speed. With a WHOOSH, he burst through the tangled mass of the Offense Line and Defense Line and, like an agile cheetah, bolted straight ahead.

”On the snap, the entire San Francisco 49ers Offense Line moves quickly to the left! The pocket is breaking down, but the Detroit Lions Defense Team seems not to have anticipated this lateral movement, their footwork can’t keep up! The two outside linebackers are trying to contain from the outside to get the sack, but... it’s a run! This is a running play!

In the midst of that lateral shift, Mike Lupati and Jonathan Goodwin easily pushed aside the defensive linemen across from them, opening up a wide, straight path! Even the linebackers responsible for run support are nowhere to be seen! This is practically an express lane! Marcus Lynch, of course, has no reason to pass up such an opportunity.

Lynch’s running is light and agile! He bursts through the gap, past the Offense Line, past the Defense Line, and drives deep into the soft underbelly of the Lions Team’s territory.

A miscalculation! The Lions Team’s defense has completely lost its positioning, they’re in total disarray! Run support, who’s coming up for run support? Is there no one there? My God!”
