American Football: King of the Bay Area

BOOM!

The entire Ford Field erupted, a thunderous and magnificent explosion of sound!

The play started as a screen pass, and after a whirlwind of events, it morphed into a deep screen. Lu Ke, off-balance and with his throwing motion breaking down, completed a forty-six-yard pass, finding his most trusted receiver amidst the chaos: Logan Newman!

Then, under one-on-one coverage from Chris Harris, Logan Newman powerfully broke free and made the catch in a magnificent diving leap. He then tumbled awkwardly out of bounds, crashing messily into the San Francisco 49ers players on the sideline and causing a scramble.

On the brink of disaster, they staged a desperate comeback, turning the tables with overwhelming and domineering force and driving the ball to the opponent’s twenty-one-yard line.

In an instant, adrenaline exploded like Fourth of July fireworks! The commentators in the broadcast booth slammed their desks and cried out in amazement. The visiting fans finally found an outlet to release their pent-up emotions. After suppressing them for so long, after waiting and waiting, they could finally let it all out without reservation.

”AHHHHHH!” Chris Wilson roared, completely beside himself. Words had lost all meaning; all that was left was a frenzied cry. In his line of sight, he saw his friends jumping up and down. Jeff Locke, Danny Rice, and the others were leaping high into the air like bottle rockets, right fists clenched, shouting in unison—

”NINERS! NINERS! NINERS!”

The hoarse shouts gradually twisted together into one, finally merging into a single roar. The cheers of all the fans created a resonance that howled across the sky above Ford Field, sending out massive shockwaves and turning the world upside down. In the face of the home fans’ flaunting, the visiting fans had finally found their chance to vent the pent-up frustration in their chests.

Happiness for the visiting fans, agony for the home fans. A celebration for the away team’s players, a slap in the face for the home team’s.

Harris stood up, not even bothering with his disheveled state. He planted his hands on his hips, gasping for air as rage began to burn within him. Again. He’d been fooled again. And this time, it was in the deep field, the area they excelled at defending. A fatal forty-six-yard blow. The shame was enough to make his eyes split with fury!

The secondary, defended by Harris and Delmas, had been impenetrable throughout the game. They were even feeling smug. Lu Ke, known for his long passes, hadn’t even attempted one so far. Their quiet day was a testament to the opponent’s fear, which to them was the highest form of praise.

But now, he hadn’t just broken his silence; he had done so with a bang. His very first deep pass attempt was aimed right for the red zone, and what’s more, it was a devastating, fatal blow delivered under extremely difficult circumstances. This... this was just...

”Fuck! Fuck!” Harris couldn’t stop cursing. He wanted to chew Lu Ke’s flesh and drink his blood, to swallow that detestable guy whole!

That violent, fierce anger erupted in an instant. He couldn’t help but start swinging his fists at the air, like a heavyweight boxer fighting for the championship belt, venting all the strength in his body. But the emptiness of punching the air did nothing to release his emotions; instead, the torment only grew worse.

’Damn that guy!’

...

Sitting sprawled on the ground, Lu Ke’s eyes were glued to the football. He watched as Logan made the incredibly difficult catch, just barely pulling it in. Lu Ke shot to his feet as if he had a spring under him, clenched his right fist, and sprinted toward Logan, the ecstatic joy of a narrow escape written all over his face.

’He knew it. He just knew Logan would be on the same wavelength!’

When the other receivers had lost their bearings and didn’t know what to do, the chemistry between Logan and Lu Ke connected once again. The pass and the route matched up perfectly, and relying on their individual abilities, the two players turned a bad situation around and completed the advance!

’Sure enough, in a critical moment, Logan is still the most trustworthy target!’

Lu Ke rushed forward and slammed into Logan with a heavy hug. Then, the two mischievous friends started forcefully slapping each other on the back, the impacts echoing with loud THWACKS, as if they wouldn’t stop until the other one coughed up blood.

Finally, Ted Ginn Jr., who wasn’t far away, jogged over and patted Logan’s shoulder. ”Hey, hey, stop, stop, Logan. Be careful. If you break Bambi, there’s no after-sales service to get him fixed here.”

Logan put on an innocent expression. ”What about me?”

But Ginn just shook his head nonchalantly. ”Isn’t Vernon still around?” A thousand arrows pierced his heart.

Standing to the side, Lu Ke laughed heartlessly, then quickly waved Logan and Ginn over. ”Let’s go, quick, keep moving. We can’t slow down our tempo.” The celebration was brief. They were now at the twenty-one-yard line, but a field goal wasn’t what they were after. A Touchdown was.

Without any need for Lu Ke to call them over, the players of the San Francisco 49ers offense sprinted to the twenty-one-yard line on their own, ready to line up and continue the attack. After five weeks of games to build chemistry and gain real-world experience, their rapport was gradually taking shape.

”They’re picking up the pace. The San Francisco 49ers’ offense has completely shifted into high gear, and now they’re speeding up even more. Over the past five weeks, this has become a key strategy for the 49ers’ offense to break down defenses. This is a whole new look for the team this season.” In the broadcast booth, Teddy was watching the action on the field. He could clearly feel that Lu Ke’s huddle time was getting shorter. The Lions’ Defense Team players hadn’t even had time to catch their breath before the 49ers’ offense was already lining up.

The huddle is where the team gathers to discuss the next play.

Before an offensive play, the offensive players gather in a circle. The quarterback relays the tactical instructions from the coaching staff, and the players discuss their routes. This is crucial for the upcoming down, as complex and variable plays allow for no mistakes. This process is called the huddle.

However, in a real game, to increase the offensive tempo, the offense will often shorten the huddle time or even run a ”no-huddle offense,” completely skipping the huddle. They rely on the quarterback’s ability and the offense’s talent to advance the ball. This is a tactical scheme that pushes instinct, talent, awareness, and chemistry to their absolute limits.

Previously, the no-huddle offense was only truly effective on the college field, where tactics are relatively simple. Now, in the professional arena, the no-huddle offense has also become an important component of the West Coast offense. To put it simply, it utilizes the quarterback’s individual abilities to push the offensive speed to its peak, creating distinctly different offensive packages based on the quarterback’s style.

Right now, the San Francisco 49ers hadn’t gone into a full no-huddle, but they had significantly shortened their huddle time, further increasing the overall tempo of their offense. In doing so, they risked making mistakes in their tactical execution. It was like a showdown between the east and west winds: either the east wind prevails over the west, or the west wind prevails over the east.

There had already been one mistake in the play-calling on the previous offensive play. What about this time?

Teddy turned to his partner. ”Kirk, do you think this is a new look brought by Jim Hubble, or an offensive characteristic shaped by Lu Ke’s personal style?”

”Personally, I think this is Lu Ke’s style,” Kirk offered his opinion. ”On the San Francisco 49ers, neither Alex Smith nor Colin Kaepernick are the type of quarterbacks suited for this fast-paced offensive style. But now, the tactical coordination between Lu Ke and Hubble is creating sparks. The fast-paced drives and reduced huddle times have given the San Francisco 49ers’ entire offensive advance a fresh new look.”

Then, Kirk pointed to the players from both teams lined up on the screen. ”Now they’ve reached the edge of the red zone, which will undoubtedly be the focal point of a fierce battle between the Lions and the 49ers.” Having just witnessed two consecutive, spectacular advances, Kirk’s mood had lightened a bit, and he started to joke, ”What do you think, a run or a pass?”

”Short pass, I’m guessing,” Teddy joked along with a chuckle.

On the field, Lu Ke had already called for the snap.

Under the cover of a two-Tight End formation, Vernon Davis and Logan Newman both sprinted straight ahead. After just three or four yards, they simultaneously changed direction. Vernon cut inside toward the goalposts and continued deep on a diagonal route, while Logan pulled horizontally to the left. Adding to that, Michael Crabtree and Ted Ginn Jr. ran routes to sit in the short pass area. For a moment, the Lions’ short-field coverage was in a state of panic.

But Lu Ke, positioned right behind the center, didn’t pull any tricks. He turned, took a long stride, and handed the football to Marcus Lynch.

It was a running play! The plan was to use the two Tight Ends to distract the defense in the short field, then rely on their physical advantage to open up a path, paving the way for the running back’s rush.

Instantly, the Lions’ Defense Line and linebackers quickly tightened their formation, desperately plugging all defensive gaps. But under the powerful impact of the 49ers’ Offense Line, at least two lanes opened up right in the middle, creating a breakthrough point for the running back—and no one would question Marcus’s ability to tear through a defensive line.

Consequently, the Lions’ secondary also crept forward, preparing to make a second-level stop.

Marcus tucked the football and charged like a battering ram toward the gap torn open by the Offense Line. But just as his feet neared the center, standing where Lu Ke had just been, he came to an unexpected screeching halt, turned, and tossed the football away—

A moment ago, Lu Ke had stood behind the center and handed the ball to Marcus. Now, Marcus stood behind the center and tossed the ball back to Lu Ke.

A switch in position, a reversal of roles. In one unsuspecting moment, the play had come full circle. Lu Ke was seen securely catching the football, taking just one step forward without any adjustment, and raising his right arm to complete the pass.
