American Football: King of the Bay Area

Chapter 384: Chapter 381: Captain’s Title

It’s well known that in soccer, the captain’s armband is of crucial importance. The captain is not only the central figure on the field but also the soul of the entire team and the backbone of the locker room. The roles of the captain and vice-captain are irreplaceable. Any player capable of taking on the captaincy is inevitably a vital member of the team.

In comparison, football is a bit different.

This is because the team is divided into three distinct units: the offense, the Defense Team, and the special teams. It’s also because the division of labor on the field is incredibly specialized, with each player’s role and responsibilities clearly defined, which limits the impact of any single core player. Moreover, far too many factors can decide the outcome of a game; even the special teams possess the ability to deliver a game-winning play.

Therefore, a football team’s captain isn’t as important.

In fact, for a long time, the NFL never had a strict requirement for every team to appoint a captain. The decision was left entirely to the teams. Later, after Roger Goodell took office, he introduced regulations in 2007 to standardize the Alliance’s rules. These required every team to designate captains for each game and allowed a team to have up to six captains, both on and off the field.

Generally, most teams designate three captains: one each for the offense, the Defense Team, and the special teams. A captain’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, calling the opening coin toss for possession, requesting timeouts during play, and deciding whether to accept or decline a referee’s penalty.

While most teams in the Alliance follow this rule, some, like the Green Bay Packers, have their own style.

For the Green Bay Packers, the captains change every week and come from all positions on the field. Even as the team’s core leader, Aaron Rodgers isn’t always an on-field captain. Players at positions like Wide Receiver, offensive tackle, or center can all be assigned the role.

Rodgers has never been a quarterback who likes to build personal relationships, and he keeps his work and personal life strictly separate. Outside of games and practices, he has very little interaction with his teammates and rarely meets or talks with them privately. They are merely teammates, not friends. Because of this, he isn’t necessarily the best choice for captain.

This approach can be attributed to the team’s tactical arrangements, internal dynamics, and the players’ individual styles. The Green Bay Packers tend to select their on-field captains based on the specific circumstances of each game.

Nevertheless, the captain still holds special significance. They serve as the team’s tactical core, spiritual leader, and pacemaker, playing a unique role.

In official games, captains don’t wear armbands. Instead, a ‘C’ patch, for ‘Captain,’ is displayed on the left or right side of their jersey. Below the letter is a row of stars, with the number of stars signifying the consecutive years they have served as captain. If a player has been captain for four or more consecutive years, the ‘C’ patch turns gold, underscoring their core status on the team.

Of course, the Green Bay Packers don’t have this jersey design.

In fact, the Green Bay Packers are a rare exception in the Alliance. While other teams like the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers have also abandoned the special jersey design—meaning their captains’ jerseys aren’t marked with a ‘C’—they still follow the common practice of appointing core players as on-field captains.

The San Francisco 49ers are no different.

After Jim Hubble took the helm, he faced a team in turmoil—one that was young, hot-headed, and undergoing a complete overhaul. He accepted the advice of team manager Trent Balk and appointed three captains. He leveraged their authority and abilities to stabilize the roster and truly bring the entire team together.

Patrick Willis and Jonathan Goodwin were obvious choices. Both were team veterans with outstanding skills, and they deservedly shouldered the captain’s responsibilities, stabilizing the offense and the Defense Team.

Meanwhile, the motley crew that was the special teams was entrusted to David Akens, who had just joined during the offseason. As a veteran who had bounced around the Alliance for years, he naturally had his own insights on how to handle locker room issues and foster teamwork.

To a certain extent, the three captains played an undeniable role in Hubble’s tactical execution, game management, and team integration. It was a point with which Hubble himself wholeheartedly agreed.

Now, Goodwin had come to him on his own initiative, expressing his wish to officially transfer the title of offensive captain to Lu Ke.

Even though the captaincy wasn’t that significant in football, Hubble still looked surprised. “Why? Isn’t the current situation fine? Why the need for a change? I don’t see any reason for it.”

“Because Lu Ke is becoming the team’s leader,” Goodwin said earnestly. “For us, a captain’s greatest responsibility is controlling the flow and rhythm of the game.” The locker room situation was another matter entirely. “Now that Lu Ke has taken charge of the offense, the status of captain is even more important for him during a game.”

In truth, Goodwin had his own reasons as well.

As a member of the team and a part of every play, Goodwin could feel the San Francisco 49ers’ offense gradually taking on Lu Ke’s distinct identity. They were rallying around him as their core and starting to form their own unique style.

Mike Lupati and Joe Stanley had started joining Lu Ke to discuss the playbook. The same was true for Goodwin himself, along with Anthony Davis and Chilo Rachal; during practice, they would instinctively turn to Lu Ke to discuss tactical considerations.

It was a long and subtle process, and Goodwin had no idea how much time it would take. But if Lu Ke could shoulder the captain’s responsibilities, it would be a good thing for the entire offense. At the very least, many commands would no longer have to be relayed through him as a middleman, making them simpler, more direct, and giving them more authority and impact.

“In fact, over the past two weeks, Lu Ke has already been fulfilling the on-field captain’s duties during games,” Goodwin stated with conviction. “I think it’s time to make it official. We have a long season ahead of us—eleven more games. If we want to make a run for the playoffs, we need to be united. Right now, Lu Ke is our best choice.”

As an Undrafted Player, Lu Ke was currently the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. But strictly speaking, this was only his rookie season. No one could predict what would happen next year, let alone in the more distant future.

Would Lu Ke get injured? Would his performance fluctuate, or even decline? Would he be unable to withstand the physical and mental toll by the end of the season and completely collapse? These were all unknowns.

Therefore, the coaching staff, and even the team manager, naturally had to think more long-term. There was a distinction between being the on-field tactical core and the future franchise cornerstone. Right now, Lu Ke was the tactical core, his starting position safe for the time being. But making him the future cornerstone was a decision that required careful thought.

In Goodwin’s view, Lu Ke was the best choice, both for this season and for the long-term future. Entrusting him with the captaincy would allow him to truly grow into a team leader and guide the entire team’s development. At least, that was how he saw it as a member of the offense.

Hubble didn’t answer immediately, instead sinking into silence. His shifting expression was plain to see, but the conflicting signals made it difficult to tell if he was leaning toward accepting or rejecting the idea.

Hubble’s thought process was simpler.

This season had been a chaotic mess, full of unexpected turns that threw everything into disarray. After entering the regular season, they had finally found their footing and were now on a roll. The situation couldn’t be better, and he didn’t want to change a thing—nor did he have the time to.

He wasn’t even thinking about a future franchise cornerstone; it was too early to even consider the tactical core for next season. The top priority was this season’s playoffs. They had to focus all their attention on the present and give it their all.

So, when it came to Goodwin’s proposal, Hubble wasn’t thinking that far ahead. Next season could be dealt with during the offseason. Within this season, Lu Ke was clearly the team’s tactical core and was also gradually becoming its center of gravity.

Even Hubble himself was extremely satisfied with Lu Ke. His communication, his execution of plays, his tactical flexibility and cohesion—he was truly bringing the West Coast offense from Hubble’s mind to life on the field.

So, why would Hubble refuse? He had no reason to.

As his thoughts churned, Hubble had already made up his mind. He had never been an indecisive coach. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have passed on the veteran Carson Palmer for an Undrafted Player like Lu Ke during the tryouts. Back then, it was an audacious, nerve-wracking gamble. Now, it had become the turning point that changed the team’s destiny.

He looked up, and just as he was about to nod in agreement, there was another knock on the door.

This time, because the office door was ajar, the visitor was immediately visible. It was none other than the Defense Team’s leader, Patrick Willis.

Willis glanced around and immediately noticed Hubble and Goodwin in conversation. He gave them a slight, apologetic nod. “Sorry to interrupt. I just came to say one thing. I’ll be quick so I don’t disturb you.” Willis took a step into the office.

Goodwin was about to stand up and excuse himself. ‘My part is done,’ he thought. ‘The rest is for the coach to consider.’

But before he could, Willis spoke up, “I wanted to suggest that promoting Lu Ke to offensive captain might be a good thing for the team.” Willis then turned to Goodwin. “Jonathan, this is nothing against you. We could even have co-captains on offense. I just think Lu Ke is a positive influence on the unit.”

As he spoke, Willis noticed that both Hubble and Goodwin were looking at him strangely. He trailed off, “What is it? Is there something on my face?”
