American Football: King of the Bay Area

RIIIP. The moment the gap appeared, Marcus Lynch saw it. It was like a paper wall, tearing open with the slightest tug to reveal a massive hole. The entire backfield lay open before him, a potential path straight to the end zone. The sound of that opportunity was crystal clear, a joyful rhythm beating in his ears.

It was too good an opportunity to pass up.

He accelerated, then accelerated again. Marcus steadily built up speed, his eyes darting from side to side. He remained vigilant, tracking the defensive players’ positions and the constantly shifting gaps on the field.

The entire Detroit Lions defense was thrown into chaos. The linebackers and defensive line, who had been aggressively pushing forward, were now in complete disarray. They all scrambled back, swarming toward Marcus in a disorganized mob. The cornerbacks and safeties in the secondary also closed in, forming an encirclement to try and trap him.

In an instant, the walls were closing in. Danger lurked at every turn. With Marcus as the epicenter, the scattered players across the field rapidly converged on him. But Marcus wasn’t the least bit nervous. His awareness was total, and he immediately spotted a cornerback charging in from his left to make the tackle!

Marcus didn’t even have time to read the player’s number. He just lowered his shoulder, turned his body, and slammed into him. The impact on the cornerback’s shoulder sent the man spinning like a top. Using the momentum, Marcus changed direction, cutting to his right to evade the sea of Honolulu Blue to his left.

But he wasn’t quite fast enough. First, a figure crashed into him from the left, causing him to stumble as he fought to stay balanced. Immediately after, two more players tackled him from the right, piling onto his body one after another.

Even so, Marcus didn’t go down. He tenaciously kept driving his legs, dragging the pile forward for another hard-earned two yards before his momentum finally gave out. His knees buckled, and he collapsed to the turf, gasping for breath.

...

After the handoff and the play-action fake, Lu Ke methodically carried out his part. His eyes were locked on Marcus Lynch’s back as the running back powered his way forward for a full twelve yards before finally being brought down. The play not only secured a first down for the San Francisco 49ers but also pushed them aggressively to midfield.

Lu Ke clenched his fists, pumping himself up.

’Everything is going according to plan. Stay calm, stick to the process.’ Beyond the play calls, his ability to read the game and seize opportunities was starting to pay off. The words from Alex were also beginning to truly sink in: ”Every down is different.”

After a series of frustrating drives, two simple, quick plays had brought the San Francisco 49ers to midfield in the blink of an eye. In this battle of wills, Lu Ke was slowly but surely getting his rhythm back. Pumping his fist wasn’t just about the successful run; it was an affirmation of his last two play calls. He needed to maintain this momentum and keep improving.

Lu Ke led the offense to their own 48-yard line, and they got into formation.

First and ten. Lu Ke threw a short two-yard pass on a quick out route, trying to hit Vernon Davis. Unfortunately, both the power and trajectory were slightly off. The ball landed far from its target, and all Vernon could do was make a token effort to reach for it as he watched the football sail out of bounds.

Second and ten. Lu Ke went back to Vernon Davis, and this time they connected. But as soon as Vernon caught the four-yard pass on the right side of the field, he was immediately double-teamed. The defenders brought him down, not only stopping his forward progress but also driving him back a couple of steps.

Thankfully, Vernon used his powerful frame to absorb the initial hit, and his forward progress was stopped at the spot of the catch. Even though he was pushed back, the referee still spotted the ball for a four-yard gain.

Third and six. Before they could even catch their breath, the San Francisco 49ers were in trouble again. It was a scene that had played out far too often in the second half, and an instinctive tension began to set in. It felt as if the nightmare was about to repeat itself, that their drive would come to an abrupt end right here.

Lu Ke could see the wavering in his teammates’ eyes. It was subtle, but the weight of their uncertainty fell heavily on his shoulders.

This time, Lu Ke didn’t panic. He glanced up at the game clock: 1:39 remaining. ”We have time,” he said, his voice steady. ”We have plenty of time to turn this around. Don’t worry about whether it’s third or fourth down. We’re going to keep attacking, play after play.”

The score was tied 20-20. If the 49ers punted now, they would be giving their opponent the time and opportunity to win the game. So, just as Lu Ke had said, they wouldn’t give up easily. They had to go for it, even on fourth down. A failed attempt would still burn precious time off the clock, shrinking the window for a potential comeback by the Lions.

”We have time,” Lu Ke repeated. ”They’re the ones who should be anxious. If we get this first down, we’ll be in the driver’s seat. The worst-case scenario is overtime! But I’m not interested in overtime. I want to end this game right now!”

Clenching his fist, Lu Ke’s words rang with steely conviction. A toughness and resolve radiated from him, his desire to win laid bare for all to see. He projected an aura of unstoppable, forward-charging momentum. The same belief that had fueled his desperate comeback in his final NCAA regular season game now surged through his chest, fierce and exhilarating.

Now, Lu Ke was truly in the zone. The thumping of his heart against his ribs was exhilarating.

He didn’t say another word. He just let his gaze travel from one teammate to the next, his eyes conveying his unwavering belief. After a brief silence, he began to call the play. One could sense the restless panic and tension in the huddle slowly subsiding, replaced by an undivided focus.

Shotgun formation. Set. Hike.

On a critical third-and-six, everyone knew the San Francisco 49ers were going to pass—the Detroit Lions knew it, the commentators knew it, and the fans knew it. The only question was, how would Lu Ke get it done?

With both hands on the ball, Lu Ke took a steady drop back from the shotgun. He quickly created distance between himself and the offensive line, forming a pocket that gave him time and space to read the field. But what he saw wasn’t promising.

The Detroit Lions defense was only rushing four defensive linemen. The other seven players—three linebackers, two cornerbacks, and two safeties—had all dropped back into coverage. They had clearly decided against a blitz, choosing instead to focus entirely on stopping the pass.

The 49ers’ four eligible receivers lined up in a trips right formation. Michael Crabtree was the lone receiver to the left, while Ted Ginn Jr., Logan Newman, and Vernon Davis were all stacked on the right.

After the snap, Crabtree, the lone receiver on the left, didn’t run a vertical route. Instead, he unexpectedly ran a drag route, cutting across the field to the right just behind the linebackers.

This flooded the right side of the field for the 49ers. All four receivers were now on the same side, three of whom were big-bodied targets. It was designed to be a blender, creating chaos for the defense.

At the snap, Vernon, lined up in the slot, sprinted five yards downfield before planting his feet and turning to face Lu Ke. He immediately began backpedaling toward the right sideline, raising his hands as a target.

On the right, Ginn was in the middle position with Logan Newman lined up wide. Both of them charged forward at the snap. One was nimble and quick, the other powerful and imposing, but both running styles presented a legitimate deep threat.

However, neither of them went deep. Instead, they both stopped at an intermediate depth. Logan Newman halted at around eleven yards, while Ginn stopped at the fourteen-yard mark. After stopping, Logan cut inside to his left while Ginn angled out toward the sideline. They crossed paths, running a mesh concept before separating.

Four receivers ran four distinct, intricate routes through the short and intermediate zones. But that part of the field was a hornet’s nest; the Detroit Lions had a full six defenders covering it. Only Louis Delmas stayed deep, protecting against a surprise long ball.

Of those six defenders, four were in zone coverage while two played man-to-man, creating a watertight net that blanketed all four passing lanes.

Nothing was open! Absolutely nothing!

Even worse, just as Lu Ke started looking for Marcus Lynch as a check-down option, he realized that even though the Lions were only rushing four, the 49ers’ pocket was already collapsing.

Lu Ke immediately realized he’d been holding the ball for too long. One second, two seconds, three… With every tick of the clock, his offensive line was put in a more desperate and defensive position.

There was no time for regret. Just then, the pocket broke down completely.

It wasn’t a clean penetration. Instead, the defensive linemen were simply bull-rushing the offensive linemen, driving them straight back into Lu Ke. Chilo Rachal and Anthony Davis were steadily losing ground, looking like they couldn’t hold their blocks any longer. The defenders’ arms were flailing wildly toward Lu Ke, threatening to break free at any second.

With the situation critical, Lu Ke had no choice but to tuck the ball and run.
