American Football: King of the Bay Area

Chapter 394: Chapter 391: No Suspense

“6:14.” In the blink of an eye, the gap on the scoreboard widened even more. The visiting San Francisco 49ers were gradually building an advantage, showcasing their excellent form this season.

For the Washington Redskins’ Defense Team, this was an absolute nightmare of a game.

It wasn’t just that they had given up a touchdown or that they were trailing. It was because they simply couldn’t be stopped.

Out on the field, the defensive players were scrambling for a solution. They adjusted according to the on-field directions from their coaches, trying to turn the tide. They weren’t hoping for another miracle interception, just an effective defensive stop—anything to halt their opponent’s momentum.

But that was a vain hope. As the game went on, it became utterly clear just how hopeless it was.

The interception seemed to have served as a wake-up call, pushing Lu Ke to unleash his full potential. From play-calling to pass selection, from pocket management to handing off the ball, every aspect of his game was firing on all cylinders. The offense became utterly unstoppable. The Washington Redskins could barely force a third down; the 49ers often secured a first down within two plays, unleashing a relentless, overwhelming assault.

Statistically, the San Francisco 49ers faced third down just seven times the entire game. They converted five of those, failing only twice.

This statistic was a microcosm of the game, a vivid illustration of the mismatch between the San Francisco 49ers’ offense and the Washington Redskins’ Defense Team.

After the interception led to a swift second touchdown for the San Francisco 49ers, the game officially entered “San Francisco Mode.”

“A long pass! The 49ers’ number fourteen airs it out for twenty-three yards and finds Ted Ginn Jr.! Ginn Jr., in a one-on-one matchup, uses his superior speed to shake his defender, makes the catch, and keeps pushing forward, successfully carrying the team past midfield!”

“The pocket is collapsing! The 49ers’ pocket breaks down again! At the last second, Marcus Lynch plows into number fifty-nine, linebacker London Fletcher, who was going for the sack! Lu Ke completes the pass under duress, finding Michael Crabtree, and the drive is kept alive!”

“It’s a run play! The Redskins’ Defense Team misjudged it! Marcus Lynch spots a seam where the defenders were off-balance and bursts through! God, he’s still going! Lynch shakes off two tacklers, breaks past the secondary! To the twenty, the fifteen, the ten… He can’t be caught! He’s gone! That’s a touchdown! The San Francisco 49ers score another touchdown!”

“Another long touchdown run for Marcus Lynch! After a brief adjustment period, this rookie running back is truly coming into his own, quickly becoming an indispensable piece of the San Francisco 49ers’ offense!”

…

“A screen pass! What a beautiful move from the quarterback! Lu Ke slams on the brakes, juking a Redskins defender who was closing in for a sure sack, and gets the pass away! Number seventy-two for the Redskins, Defensive End Stephen Bowen, completely lost his center of gravity and tumbled helplessly to the ground.”

“His Pocket Footwork is completely unflustered. He’s relentless under pressure, showing not just immense composure but also a fierce will to win. This rookie quarterback has truly injected a powerful resilience into his team with his performance. To deliver this kind of play in his rookie season, it’s no wonder Jim Hubble has locked him in as the starter.”

The entire FedEx Field gradually fell silent. The curses faded away, and with them, the cheers and chants of support.

At first, a relentless wave of boos and curses rained down, a massive verbal assault directed at Lu Ke. But under the weight of one spectacular play after another by the San Francisco 49ers’ offense, the noise gradually subsided, as if the crowd had lost all its energy and spirit.

Soon, the home fans turned on their own team, booing them to show their extreme displeasure with the lack of production from both the offense and defense. The chorus of boos put the Washington Redskins in a terrible spot, besieged from all sides. The fans relentlessly vented their anger on their own team, trying to spark some semblance of a fighting spirit.

It didn’t help in the slightest.

And so, the stadium descended into chaos. When the San Francisco 49ers offense took the field, they were booed. When the Washington Redskins offense took the field, they were booed. Even the special teams unit was met with relentless booing.

Amidst this chaotic atmosphere, the game grew increasingly chippy. First the Redskins, then the 49ers—players on both sides started getting rough.

“Yellow flag for unnecessary roughness! The San Francisco 49ers’ offense seems to have lost its cool. They’re clashing with the Redskins’ Defense Team, and now the Redskins players have lost their heads and are swarming in. Yellow flags, flags are flying everywhere! The situation is getting chaotic, and the referees are trying to get it under control.”

“Things are definitely getting heated, with irrational behavior from players on both sides. Now let’s see the officials’ ruling… The final penalty is against… Chilo Rachal, number sixty-two, offensive guard for the San Francisco 49ers. A fifteen-yard penalty. Suddenly, the San Francisco 49ers are in a bind: second-and-twenty-one.”

“Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ! What did we just witness? What is happening on that field! Unbelievable!”

“Facing a second-and-twenty-one, Lu Ke rolls out of the pocket. It’s a simple screen pass designed to draw in the defense, and he dumps it off for six yards to running back Marcus Lynch. With the Redskins’ secondary out of position, Lynch barrels forward, breaking one tackle! A second! A third! A fourth! He’s not stopping! He’s still going!”

“Five! He broke five tackles! After shrugging off five tacklers, Lynch managed to gain a whopping twenty-four yards, getting another first down for the San Francisco 49ers. Incredible! That is just incredible!”

“And there’s another flag! A late hit! The penalty this time is on Redskins cornerback Kevin Barnes. The bad blood on the field is getting thicker. Even when facing an impossible situation, the San Francisco 49ers somehow cheat death and keep the drive alive!”

BOOOOOOO! The entire stadium exploded. A torrential downpour of boos cascaded from all directions, but this time they weren’t aimed at the San Francisco 49ers—they were directed at the Washington Redskins.

It was second-and-twenty-one. The Redskins’ Defense Team not only gave up the first down but also missed five tackles along the way. Their secondary looked like the 49ers’ personal backyard, with Marcus Lynch moving through it as if no one else was on the field.

Such a downright abysmal performance was an insult to the home fans. They couldn’t take it anymore. Curses started mixing with the boos, raining down from the stands like crashing debris.

“What’s happening now? It looks like the Redskins’ defensive players are getting into a verbal altercation with the home fans. They’re shouting at each other on the sidelines. This is not good. This is really not good. For the Washington Redskins, this is like a nightmare they don’t want to wake up from. But the game isn’t over yet; they need to cool their heads.”

“Touchdown! It’s another touchdown! Lu Ke hits Logan Newman in the flat with a five-yard pass. Behind a block from Vernon Davis, Newman makes the easy catch, then makes a hurdling leap over a defender and into the end zone, securing the 49ers’ fourth touchdown of the game!”

“The Washington Redskins’ Defense Team is giving it everything they have, constantly trying to elevate their play and mount an effective defense, but the San Francisco 49ers’ offense is simply a cut above. Lu Ke has carried over his hot hand from last week’s game, demonstrating a steady yet incisive offensive feel under pressure, successfully dismantling the opposition and sustaining the drive.”

…

“This game has officially entered garbage time. The Washington Redskins’ offense has been completely unable to show any grit. They lack the explosive, big-play ability needed in critical moments, and they also lack the patience for methodical, sustained drives. Now, they’re just sliding step by step into the abyss.”

“Here in the fourth quarter, the Redskins’ first drive ends with yet another fumble. The score is now 6:28, but given the performance of both teams, we’re already in garbage time. The Redskins have shown zero ability to mount a comeback. If they can’t get an effective defensive stop on this next series, you can stick a fork in this one.”

…

“The home fans are starting to file out. The San Francisco 49ers have once again moved into field goal range. From forty-three yards out, David Akens doesn’t miss. He puts three more on the board, pushing the score to 6:31. This one is over.”

“The fans at FedEx Field refuse to endure this humiliation in their home stadium any longer. More than half of them have already gotten up and left.”

“There’s no fight left in them. The game is over. You could declare it officially over right now. From the fans to the players, no one showed any real ability to compete. Today’s performance was just abysmal.”

The announcers’ enthusiasm began to wane as well. A game like this isn’t exciting at all; it was choppy and disjointed. More importantly, the contest itself was lackluster. Even though Lu Ke’s performance remained outstanding, an exciting game needs both teams to be competitive. Today’s game was a one-sided affair, and honestly, it was just dull.

Looking back after the game, even Lu Ke’s interception felt anticlimactic. He wasn’t affected by it in the slightest; instead, he responded by playing even more fiercely.

Amidst the somber atmosphere, the referee blew the final whistle. The final score was “9:31.” In the last moments, the Washington Redskins managed to pull themselves together enough to kick a field goal, but it was far too little, too late. The game clock simply ticked away to its hollow end.
