American Football: King of the Bay Area

”Hike!”

Lu Ke’s powerful snap count echoed through Ford Field. In an instant, Ted Ginn Jr., Logan Newman, and Vernon Davis shot forward like three heat-seeking missiles, their powerful presence and erratic routes wreaking havoc throughout the short-passing zone.

Only in the short-passing zone.

Newman cut left, racing toward the sideline. Vernon Davis did the same, but angled toward the middle of the field. Ginn, starting from the right, made an inside cut; his nimble feet carried him through the middle of the field with no sign of stopping, as he continued to pull rapidly toward the right.

Like three sharp knives, the players stirred up a storm in the short-passing area, completely disrupting the formation of the Detroit Lions defense.

The Lions’ defense was running a zone on their right side to jointly face the push from Crabtree, Ginn, and Newman. On their left, they were in man-to-man, with a linebacker assigned to cover Vernon. But now, drawn by the 49ers’ routes, the right side of their defense had become incredibly congested, leaving them dazzled and overwhelmed.

The players on the defensive line held their positions, shadowing their zones. But the linebackers and defensive backs behind them found their lines of sight blocked and fragmented, making it impossible to make an effective read.

However, seeing that all the 49ers receivers were running routes in the short-passing zone with no indication of going deep, the secondary also began to press forward to reinforce the coverage.

...

Louis Delmas, the Detroit Lions’ number 26 safety, stepped forward quickly, but he didn’t fully commit his weight. His eyes darted left and right; the alarm bells of his sixth sense just wouldn’t quit. An unsettling feeling made his muscles tense up. He felt something was wrong but couldn’t put his finger on it, so he remained on high alert.

Just then, he caught a figure out of the corner of his eye to his left. Who was that?

Number fifteen.

Number fifteen for the San Francisco 49ers was Michael Crabtree. ’Damn it, isn’t Crabtree supposed to be on the right? Why did he suddenly appear on the left? And why is no one covering him? The entire left side is completely open, he’s got all the space in the world. Damn it! Goddamn it!’

There was no time for further thought. Delmas immediately shifted his center of gravity and, like a hungry wolf, cut hard to his left, charging forward with unstoppable momentum.

In his vision, Crabtree’s run was incredibly fierce. He wasn’t fast, but the sound of him cutting through the wind whistled loudly, exuding the power of a tiger descending a mountain. Delmas was completely focused. His body reacted on pure instinct, pushing his speed to the absolute limit as he launched himself forward in a conditioned reflex.

One was a rapid horizontal charge, the other a vertical sprint. The two forces collided at an intersection. The horizontal force, like a high-speed train, slammed brutally into the waist of the vertical figure. After wrapping his arms in a perfect tackle, he threw him violently, viciously to the ground!

BAM! With a tremendous thud, the two men tumbled into a heap. Their powerful inertia sent them sliding uncontrollably across the turf, kicking up a huge spray of grass. After a violent, earth-shattering collision, they both rolled out of bounds and separated, landing awkwardly in different spots before finally coming to a stop.

”TWEEET!” The referee blew his whistle, signaling a complete pass, then stood at the San Francisco 49ers’ forty-two-yard line. The pass had gained nineteen yards!

Delmas scrambled to his feet and looked at his defensive teammates. ”Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” A torrent of curses erupted from him as he vented his fury and frustration with abandon.

On a long third-and-seven, not only had they allowed the opponent to convert, but they had given up a full nineteen yards. It was a disaster, a complete and utter disaster! What the hell were they doing? What the hell just happened on the field?

...

It wasn’t just Delmas and the Lions’ defense who were bewildered; the commentators were also puzzled. The previous offensive play had been dizzying, like a combination punch that left their opponent seeing stars. Before they could even figure out what had happened, they were beaten back, completely routed.

”Beautiful, that was just beautiful! That offensive play advanced the ball almost effortlessly. The defensive players had no time to react; they didn’t even seem to understand what happened. Let’s take a look at the replay now.”

In the broadcast booth, Kirk and Teddy once again dutifully took up their commentary roles. Kirk picked up his pen and drew two circles on the TV screen. ”Pay attention here.”

”After the snap, Michael Crabtree didn’t run forward. Instead, he dropped back. In the space between the Offense Line and the quarterback, he and Marcus Lynch executed a cross, after which Lynch moved to the left to fill the void left by Crabtree, pretending to charge forward behind his teammates and completely deceiving the Lions’ defenders on this play.”

”Meanwhile, Crabtree moved to the right. After a run up the slot, Lu Ke completed a five-yard short pass. Crabtree then used his physical advantage, charging forward with powerful strides to advance the ball. The entire push was strong and formidable.”

The first circle was in front of Lu Ke, indicating the cross between the two players. The second circle was on the left side of the San Francisco 49ers’ formation, showing the confrontation between the offensive and defensive players.

”On the Lions’ right side, they opted for zone coverage, blanketing the short-passing area. But it was precisely because of this zone coverage that when Crabtree disappeared and Lynch appeared, they failed to react effectively in time. This created a breakdown in the defensive chain. The right side coverage remained airtight, but Crabtree became the fish that slipped through the net, left completely uncovered.”

”The problem now lies on the Lions’ left. Chris Harris, in the secondary, was the player responsible for providing backup in the zone. After Vernon cut to the right, Harris should have covered the empty space in the backfield on the left. But Harris instead chose to cut inside to help defend against the run, leaving Crabtree in a no-man’s-land. His entire run-after-catch met no threat whatsoever.”

”If it weren’t for Louis Delmas’s timely tackle, or if Delmas had missed that tackle, Crabtree would have had a wide-open field in front of him. It wouldn’t have just been a nineteen-yard gain.”

After re-watching the replay, Kirk and Teddy broke down the execution of the San Francisco 49ers’ entire play in detail, leaving them both impressed and perplexed.

”In the final moments before the snap, Lu Ke made a second read of the defense and changed the play call, which paid off miraculously. Facing a third-and-seven, he once again gained the upper hand in a head-to-head confrontation.”

”The problem now is that the Lions’ defense had a coordination issue. Delmas is currently expressing his dissatisfaction with his teammates, and the members of the defense are still trying to sort out what happened. However, the San Francisco 49ers are already getting ready for the next snap. They have no intention of giving their opponent any breathing room.”

...

Chris Harris was already burning with rage—not just anger, but profound humiliation. He’d been had. He’d been deceived. Onlookers wouldn’t understand, but he, the one involved, knew it all too well. ’That rookie quarterback’s eyes... they were a goddamn smokescreen!’

In a game of football, no one can see the quarterback’s eyes hidden behind his helmet except for the defensive players standing opposite him. For a quarterback, his eyes are a crucial part of executing a play, and they are also one of the things the defense tries to read. But from another angle, for a top-tier quarterback, his eyes can also be an important tool for deception.

The Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers was undoubtedly a master of the art.

Look left, throw right. Look short, throw deep. Look like a play-action pass, but it’s a designed run. The information revealed by the eyes can influence not only the offensive players’ movements but also the defensive players’ judgment.

A moment of inattention, and you could fall right into a trap.

For every quarterback, learning to hide their eyes and avoid revealing their passing intentions is a critical lesson, a necessary step in the journey from rookie to veteran. But using deceptive eyes is an advanced tactic, like a hard count designed to draw an offside penalty. It doesn’t work every time, nor does a player always have the energy to spend on such subtleties.

Only at the right moment can it be truly effective.

’He thought he was facing an innocent Little Deer Bambi, but in reality, it was a fox in deer’s clothing—so cunning!’

Not only had he mistakenly thought his own feint had deceived his opponent, but he had also completely misjudged the opponent’s tactical intent. He had walked so cleanly into a strategic trap. This was utter humiliation!

”Damn it!”

Harris spat to the side, viciously venting the frustration in his heart, but it was no use. He didn’t have time to think or vent any further. The San Francisco 49ers’ offense was already lined up again, ready to run another play.

The rookie quarterback standing behind his Offense Line was like a seasoned hunter, methodically arranging his play, his determined eyes looking as if victory was already in his grasp.

”Ptooey,” Harris cursed again. Then let them go at it again. In this cruel, primeval forest of survival of the fittest, they would see who the true ruler was. It remained to be seen who would bring down the deer!

Harris strode forward to his position, his eyes locked on Lu Ke, completely motionless.
