American Football: King of the Bay Area

Double tight end formation.

As soon as Hubble’s play call came through the headset, a thousand thoughts raced through Lu Ke’s mind, but he instantly grasped the coach’s intent. Although Lu Ke had read the playbook countless times, he was still learning how to truly understand and apply its concepts. Especially with the system’s help, he was growing rapidly as a quarterback.

Though he was a step behind his coach at first, Lu Ke’s thoughts quickly fell into place.

Lu Ke and Hubble had a quick exchange over the headset, confirming all of Lu Ke’s assumptions. His tactical approach was now crystal clear.

Hubble nodded in satisfaction, a show of his approval. If every rookie quarterback could understand plays and grasp situations as quickly as Lu Ke, teams wouldn’t be so hesitant to start them. On the contrary, the energy and spirit of a rookie quarterback could inject new life into a team.

Unfortunately, in the real world, that was just a hypothetical.

Among this year’s rookie quarterbacks, Lu Ke was second to none when it came to learning and executing the playbook. It was clear now what a perfect score on the Fonderick test truly meant.

The second quarter began, and the San Francisco 49ers immediately faced a third-and-seven.

Third-and-seven.

This was, without a doubt, a difficult, long-yardage situation that placed strict demands on the team’s play-calling and execution.

Standing in the pocket, Lu Ke carefully read the opposing defensive formation. He bent down, ready for the snap, but his peripheral vision caught players shifting again. He stood back up to make a second read on the defense.

The San Francisco 49ers were in a double tight end formation, making the entire offensive set look heavy. In the middle were the five offensive linemen. To the left were Michael Crabtree, Logan Newman, and Ted Ginn Jr., while Vernon Davis was on the right. Lu Ke and Marcus Lynch lined up four yards behind the center in the Pistol Formation, standing parallel to each other.

Heavy weapons on the right, heavy weapons on the left. It was a dual strong-side formation.

First, the right side. Both Vernon and Logan were tight ends, but with slightly different styles. Compared to Logan, Vernon was a more traditional tight end: physically strong and tough, with outstanding blocking ability, though his receiving skills were a bit less polished.

In the short-pass area, Vernon could serve as a lead blocker for the running back or a pass protector for the quarterback. More importantly, he used his physical advantage to dominate on short-yardage receptions. In 2009, Vernon made the Pro Bowl on the back of his masterful blocking and short-passing receiving skills.

Now, Vernon was lined up alone on the right, yet he remained a formidable fortress on the flank—a powerful threat that couldn’t be ignored. What’s more, Marcus was standing to Lu Ke’s right, adding another potential threat to that side of the field.

Next, the left side. The big-bodied wide receiver, Crabtree, covered the short-pass area. Tight end Logan was a threat in the short, intermediate, and deep zones. And Ginn, using his elite speed to full effect, was the deep-field playmaker. These three receivers could run a countless combination of routes to create threats.

Simply by swapping Kyle Williams for Vernon Davis, the San Francisco 49ers’ presence in the short passing game and running lanes immediately became much more powerful. Yet, they kept the light and nimble Ginn on the field to maintain a deep-strike threat. The entire offensive style was instantly transformed, presenting a completely different look.

The Detroit Lions defense, standing on the other side of the line in a face-to-face confrontation, could clearly feel a subtle shift in the air. The menacing aura became thick and heavy. It felt as if a nimble longsword had been replaced by a spiked mace—or a giant war hammer. The sheer intimidating force was a heavy weight on their chests, making it hard to breathe.

In response, the Lions’ defense also adjusted.

In their front seven, three defensive linemen faced off against the five offensive linemen. The four linebackers spread out: two stood behind the defensive line, ready to stop the run and defend the short middle of the field; one moved up half a step to face Vernon one-on-one; and the last one dropped back half a step, keeping a close eye on Ginn.

In the secondary, the two cornerbacks and two safeties were positioned about six or seven yards back. One safety was shaded slightly to the right of center, preparing to cover Vernon and Marcus and waiting to react to the play. The other three defensive backs were all positioned to the left, their eyes locked on Crabtree, Logan, and Ginn.

The entire Detroit Lions defensive formation had pressed up slightly, creating a tense standoff with the San Francisco 49ers’ power formation. The air was thick with tension, smelling of gunpowder. It looked just like a red-zone defense.

But in reality, they were still on the San Francisco 49ers’ own 23-yard line, a long way from the red zone. More importantly, this was only the beginning of the second quarter! Yet the atmosphere and intensity had already reached another level.

You could clearly feel the resolute, must-win determination from both teams.

Lu Ke had just keenly observed the safety on the right side of the secondary, Chris Harris, subtly shifting his feet. On the surface, he seemed to be moving to the right—Lu Ke’s right, Harris’s left—but Harris’s center of gravity remained fixed.

’Is this a smokescreen, or an accurate read?’

With an Anticipation stat of 81, Lu Ke still wasn’t entirely sure.

So, Lu Ke straightened up for a second read. He didn’t lock his eyes on Harris, however. Instead, he carefully surveyed the defensive front’s alignment, using only his peripheral vision to track Harris’s footwork.

Chris Harris, the Detroit Lions’ number 43 safety, was a veteran. He had reached the Super Bowl in 2006 with the Chicago Bears, losing to the Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis Colts. He was selected to the All-Pro Second Team in 2010. He wasn’t the most gifted player, but he had carved out a place for himself in the league through cunning and intelligence.

That crafty, veteran savvy was Harris’s greatest weapon.

Harris was making a deceptive move. On the surface, he was shifting to his left, preparing to help cover Vernon and Marcus. But in reality, his center of gravity hadn’t shifted. His true targets were a run up the middle or Logan in the area to his right.

’Sure enough, the 49ers’ rookie quarterback fell for it.’

As a defensive player, Harris didn’t have to hide his eyes. He locked his gaze onto the rookie quarterback’s every move. He saw the rookie stand up to read the defense again and pretended to stop in a panic, freezing in place as if to hide his intentions. In reality, he never stopped observing the rookie’s actions and expression.

He could see the rookie’s eyes fall on the right and middle of the field, surveying the entire defensive alignment, especially the positions of the defensive linemen. ’That cautious gaze can’t hide his true intentions,’ Harris thought. ’He’s clearly evaluating a potential run or a short pass over the middle.’

Only players who have actually been on the gridiron can understand: the eyes, hidden behind the helmet, reveal so much—especially a quarterback’s eyes. Reading the quarterback’s eyes is an essential skill for every defensive player, but only the top defenders can do it accurately.

Why do rookie quarterbacks so easily give away their intentions on the field? Why are college-level plays so often figured out in the pros?

This was why.

And now, Harris had read the rookie quarterback’s eyes. He knew his deception had worked. If the kid chose to run the ball, it would be a lamb walking to the slaughter—he was walking right into the trap.

”Hike!”

Hidden among a dizzying series of dummy calls, Harris heard the real snap count. His eyes caught the explosive twitch of the offensive line’s muscles as they fired off the ball. At almost the exact same instant, Harris exploded forward, pouncing like a cheetah—not toward his left where Vernon Davis was, but into the gap in the middle of his own defensive line.

It was a baited gap! A hole intentionally left open by the Lions’ defense to give the running back a rushing lane. But Harris was there to fill it instantly and deliver a head-on, devastating blow to Marcus Lynch.

He threw his entire body forward, an unstoppable force. The joy of a victory already won began to flutter in his chest, but a second later, the smile froze on his lips. Harris stared in stunned disbelief at the offensive line before him.

’No, this is wrong. I should be seeing Marcus Lynch, not the offensive line!’ he thought. ’Why am I only seeing Jonathan Goodwin and Mike Lupati? Where’s Marcus? Why has he disappeared?’

His forward momentum carried him onward. Harris’s eyes darted around inside his helmet, and he caught sight of Marcus cutting laterally from left to right, zipping past Lu Ke without stopping. At the same time, another figure cut quickly from right to left, crossing paths with Marcus and leaving behind just a blur as he shot through the gap behind the offensive line and vanished in an instant.

The crisscrossing routes were dazzling and chaotic. More importantly, the football was still in the rookie quarterback’s hands!

In that instant, a thought flashed through his mind and a chill shot down his spine. Harris’s expression twisted from joy to terror. ’The rookie quarterback wasn’t fooled. This isn’t a run—it’s a pass!’

’Damn it!’
