I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 748: Power of the Forgotten Hero Part I

Boreas’s massive body continued its descent toward the barren wasteland as Ren stood balanced on the falling corpse with absolute stability.

His katana remained extended, the blade still pristine despite the execution that had just occurred. Around him, the assembled dragons had frozen in recognition of what they had witnessed.

One of the remaining lieutenants, Singe, one of the oldest dragons in the Herald’s cadre, made its decision in the space of a heartbeat.

Flight was the only option. The creature wheeled its massive body in the air. It began to accelerate away from Ren’s position, its wings beating with desperate intensity to generate thrust and escape the barren wasteland.

Ren’s expression shifted. His blue eyes, which had maintained their absolute flatness throughout the execution of Boreas, flickered with disappointment.

It was the look of someone observing a violation of expectation, the visual manifestation of a creature recognizing a failure in understanding.

He raised his katana.

The swing was economical, a single movement that contained no wasted motion and no hesitation in its execution.

The blade moved through an arc as if it were cutting nothing but empty air, a gesture that should have been entirely ineffective against a dragon several hundred meters away.

But Ren’s ability operated on principles that transcended conventional physics.

Spatial Severance activated the moment the blade began its motion. The edge of the katana didn’t cut matter. It cut the space between objects, folding reality itself to bring the edge into contact with targets that should have been beyond reach.

The blade created a wound in space that manifested directly against the fleeing dragon’s spine.

The effect occurred with a 0.1-second delay, a brief pause that allowed Ren’s consciousness to process the completion of the swing before the consequences materialized in physical space.

The dragon’s body split in two. The separation occurred with perfect geometric precision: a vertical line that ran from the crown of its head, down through its spine, and continued through its abdomen until it reached the tip of its tail.

The cut was so clean, so exact, that the two halves of the dragon’s body continued moving for a single heartbeat before gravity reasserted dominance and both pieces began their descent toward the ground.

Internal organs spilled from the bisected cavity. Blood poured outward in torrents that seemed to have no beginning and no end, a cascade of fluid that painted the air and the ground beneath the falling remains.

The dragon’s death was instantaneous, its consciousness severing the moment the blade completed its cut, yet its body continued the arc of its fall as if still driven by the momentum of flight.

Both halves crashed into the barren wasteland hard enough to create massive craters.

Dust and debris exploded outward from the impact zones, creating clouds of particulate matter that hung suspended in the air as testimony to the force of the landing.

The remaining dragons suddenly understood with absolute clarity that escape was no longer a viable option.

Their eyes tracked the remains of their fallen companion, watching as the bisected halves continued to descend toward the ground.

Some of them began to shift their positioning, their wings extending and retracting in reflexive motions born from the primal desire for flight.

Others remained motionless, their consciousness already processing the fundamental impossibility of their situation.

Ren’s form vanished from the falling corpse of Boreas.

He didn’t fade or disappear gradually. He ceased to exist in that location and was replaced by empty air.

The dragons that had been tracking his movement found their visual perception suddenly inadequate to keep up with his motion.

He was gone, erased from their sensory awareness that they couldn’t even determine the direction of his departure.

Confusion rippled through the assembled dragons like a physical wave.

Their roars and calls overlapped as they attempted to establish communication, identify where the threat would manifest next, and coordinate a defensive response.

But the silence that followed was more disturbing than the chaos.

As Nexia’s consciousness fractured into layers of processing that existed simultaneously. The dragons flew down to the ground to limit the space from which they could be attacked.

Her silver scales shimmered faintly beneath the dim sky as her wind-and-earth affinity gave her perceptual acuity that exceeded that of most dragons. Yet, even her refined senses struggled to track what was occurring on the battlefield.

Part of her awareness was monitoring the other dragons, tracking their positions and their psychological states, noting which creatures were attempting to formulate escape routes and which were beginning to accept the reality of their situation.

Another part of her consciousness was focused on Ren’s location, desperately attempting to predict where he would manifest next based on spatial patterns and tactical positioning.

She was calculating distances and velocities, extrapolating from the patterns she had observed during Boreas’s execution, attempting to formulate some predictive framework that might allow her to understand what was happening.

A third part was processing the tactical impossibility of the situation they faced. The Herald was bound. Jack Kaiser controlled the battlefield through his infiltrated dragons.

And now this being, this Ren Ryzard, was demonstrating power that transcended even her expanded understanding of what a Sovereign-rank creature could accomplish.

’He’s everywhere and nowhere. How is he moving like this? How is any creature moving at velocities that transcend even wind-affinity perception? I’ve spent centuries refining my ability to track fast-moving objects and perceive the world at speeds beyond normal comprehension. And I can’t follow him.’

Her talons clenched against the stone beneath her feet, the claws pressing so hard that the rock cracked in response to the pressure.

Her breathing became shallow, controlled, the respiration of a creature attempting to maintain composure in the face of absolute uncertainty.

She could feel her heartbeat accelerating despite her attempt to maintain rigid control. Her muscles were tightening, preparing for flight or combat or whatever response might become necessary in the next fraction of a second.

Ren appeared directly in front of Nexia’s face.

He was upside down, his body oriented perpendicular to the ground, as if he were standing on solid earth rather than hovering in open air.

His head was inverted relative to hers, yet his posture conveyed absolute stability and complete confidence.

His blue eyes fixed on hers with the particular intensity of someone conducting a final assessment before rendering judgment.

The spatial distortion around him was visible even to dragons whose sensory capabilities exceeded normal perception.

The air around him seemed to shimmer, as if reality itself were bending to accommodate his presence.

The ground above where he stood was warped, compressed under the weight of his dominion, displaying evidence of the spatial severance he had created.

”Will you run as well,” Ren asked, his voice carrying the monotone quality of someone posing a genuine question rather than an accusation, “or will you stand and face what comes?”

Nexia’s consciousness was fragmenting. Her mind was processing the reality of his proximity, the absolute impossibility of his positioning, the fundamental violation of her understanding regarding how creatures moved through space.

Her mouth opened, but no words emerged. Understanding what was occurring exceeded her capacity to formulate a verbal response.

Family vacation. I will still post chapters. TOD uncertain.
