I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 729: Apex Predator

He used the magma around him, and the liquid rock responded to his will. The molten material began to push upward.

His right hand pushed against the magma beneath him, and his body erupted from the depths of the crater.

Jack’s legs extended with full force, his arms driving him out of the liquid rock with the certainty of something that understood its own physical capabilities.

He rose from the magma with droplets of molten rock cascading off his body.

Magma dripped from his face. The molten material had melted his armor in places, had seared away the slag crust he had formed, but his skin remained intact.

The heat that would have reduced a normal human to ash didn’t touch him. His immunity to fire magic rendered the magma nothing more than a temporary inconvenience.

His black lightning crackled around his form as he ascended.

He stood at the crater’s edge, his entire upper body glistening with magma that was already beginning to cool against the ambient air. His breath came in controlled gasps. His yellow-orange eyes blazed with something that transcended simple tactical focus.

Something darker.

Something hungrier.

A smile graced his lips, not the smile of amusement, but rather of profound contentment.

‘Feel that power,’ Emberion’s voice resonated through his consciousness, and on this occasion, the ancient dragon’s tone conveyed a discernible sense of excitement.

The fire dragon was tasting combat through Jack’s body, was experiencing the sensations of impact, healing, and magical channeling.

‘The Herald believed his strength would break you. He believed his weight and his force would reduce you to fragments. And you accepted the impact and walked away. Feel the fear in him now. Let him taste the reality of what confronts him.’

The Herald retreated upward.

The dragon launched himself into the sky, his massive wings spreading to their fullest extension as he accelerated vertically.

The movement was desperate. He didn’t do this out of tactics, but instinctively, as a predator that had recognized its prey was not cooperating with the script written for this battle.

His golden scales flared with renewed intensity, and his entire consciousness seemed to shift into something darker and more desperate.

The Herald had realized the truth.

Physical assault wasn’t going to break the human.

The dragon’s maw opened as he ascended, and his throat began to compress.

Power accumulated in the dragon’s gullet, magical energy compressing at a cellular level, each atom of his body contributing to the unified force.

The Herald was preparing for something catastrophic. Something that transcended a simple draconic breath attack.

[8:12] ticked across the edge of Jack’s perception. The Ren binding timer continues its relentless countdown.

Jack stood motionless in the crater.

His right hand hung at his side. His breathing remained controlled. His yellow-orange eyes tracked the Herald’s position in the sky with the cold precision of a creature processing tactical information at the highest level.

But beneath that calm exterior, something was shifting.

Jack’s consciousness was beginning to fragment into something darker.

Something more primal.

The initial subtle enthusiasm was now visibly manifesting. A genuine smile, reflecting profound anticipation rather than mere social courtesy, began to form.

His fingers twitched with anticipation, the physical manifestation of a consciousness that was beginning to recognize the true nature of what was about to occur.

The Herald was committing to a massive assault. The dragon was channeling power at a scale that suggested the ultimate technique was being prepared. Jack’s tactical assessment of the engagement had been correct.

The Herald had reached the point where conventional tactics were no longer effective. The dragon had abandoned ground-based assault and was preparing for something apocalyptic.

And Jack was genuinely, deeply, excited to face it.

The demon inside him was stirring. He recognized that a genuine confrontation with a formidable adversary, one that would require the full extent of his capabilities and revolve around the assertion of power through force, was imminent.

‘Now the true battle begins,’ Tharaxis observed, his voice carrying the measured quality of someone who understood the implications of what was unfolding. The angel on Jack’s other shoulder is the counterbalance to Emberion’s raw aggression.

‘The Herald is committing his ultimate power. Once this is released, he will have nothing remaining. The dragon will be operating on pure desperation and instinct. This is where you assert dominance. This is where you remind this continent why the Soul Warden was feared.’

Jack’s smile widened.

His demonic transformation was accelerating. His left hand, the one composed of fire, burned with increased intensity.

The flames dancing across his wrist and up his arm in patterns as what looked like his fire was consuming his body. His black lightning intensified, crackling with such force that the very air around him began to distort.

In the sky above, the Herald’s ultimate power continued to charge toward completion. The dragon’s massive frame glowed with accumulated magical force. The clouds around the Herald had begun to boil from the thermal radiation. The very atmosphere was being warped by the concentration of power that was being assembled.

And below, on the ground, Jack waited.

His eyes blazed with the intensity of a creature that was no longer entirely human. His consciousness fragmented between three entities.

Jack Kaiser, the human, Emberion, the fire dragon demanding combat, and the Demon within, itching to fight.

The Herald’s body glowed with accumulated magical force so intense that the very clouds around the dragon seemed to liquefy from the thermal radiation.

Sixty seconds had elapsed. The dragon continued to charge, his consciousness locked onto a singular objective.

To channel enough power into a single, world-ending attack that would obliterate any trace of this human.

The Herald’s maw remained open.

The dragon’s throat was a conduit of pure magical power now.

….

The force that had been compressed in his gullet was reaching critical density.

The magical energy was so concentrated that it was beginning to warp the very fabric of reality around it. This was the ultimate expression of draconic power.

This was the technique that had been perfected across centuries of combat against worthy opponents.

This was the Herald’s absolute apex.

….

One hundred and twenty seconds elapsed.

The dragon’s body began to vibrate under the weight of the power he was containing.

His scales flared with radiance so intense that looking directly at them would cause pain. The clouds around the Herald were no longer boiling.

They were being vaporized, transformed into component elements that were being scattered across the upper atmosphere.

The Herald’s consciousness was absolutely certain.

This assault would obliterate the human, eliminate the threat, and unequivocally demonstrate to every dragon on this continent that the Herald maintains its supreme authority, dominant power, and an unchallengeable position.

Paving the way for the fall of Typhoon.

The dragon’s golden eyes blazed with absolute confidence.

….

One hundred and fifty seconds elapsed.

The Herald’s maw opened even wider. The aperture became so large that the dragon’s entire head seemed to transform into nothing more than an instrument for delivering destruction.

The accumulated power was approaching its absolute maximum.

Jack stood motionless below.

His yellow-orange eyes tracked the Herald’s position, and his blood began to boil with anticipation.

His consciousness was no longer purely focused on defense. His demonic nature had fully surfaced now, and with it came something far more aggressive than simple tactical assessment.

His right hand extended toward empty space.

Reality tore open.

Portals erupted into existence across the scarred battlefield. Hundreds of them opened around Jack’s position. And through each aperture, barrels came rolling through.
