I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 711: [Sovereign-Class Creatures]

Jack’s hand moved involuntarily to the Mask, his fingers tracing the surface where the cracks should had been.

The artifact was smooth now, undamaged, radiating power that was almost overwhelming in its intensity.

Another notification blared across his vision.

[Blessing Reward: Soul Binding Cost Reduction for living souls – 1000× → 900×]

The implication of that reduction cascaded through Jack’s consciousness with the force of a revelation.

The cost to claim a living soul had been reduced from one thousand times to nine hundred times. That was a significant dropin price.

That was the capacity to claim higher-tier creatures with substantially less resource expenditure.

Another notification erupted immediately after.

[Mask of the Soul Warden: Status Change – [Fractured] → [Normal]]

[New Ability Unlocked: Phobia]

[Ability Description: Grants the user the capacity to perceive the unseen fractures within a soul’s spiritual fabric. Through the lenses of the Warden’s Mask, the deepest psychological anomalies, unresolved terrors, and absolute fears of any entity within the user’s line of sight become entirely visible. Reveals the exact coordinates where a spirit’s resolve breaks.]

The implications of such an ability were profound, as it enabled discerning the precise moment when an individual’s resolve could be broken.

This power extended to perceiving the inherent psychological vulnerabilities within every entity, thereby enabling an understanding of the exact points of susceptibility that could be leveraged to assert control over their consciousness.

This capability transcended mere subjugation, exerting a profound influence over an entity’s core being.

Jack’s hand involuntarily clenched, his nails creating crescents in his palms as they drew blood.

The profound implications of this newfound ability subtly altered his respiratory system.

His inhalation deepened, and his exhalation became more controlled.

The comprehension that he could now perceive entities not merely as physical forms or magical manifestations, but as fundamentally fractured beings whose psychological psyches were discernible to his heightened perception, represented a transformative understanding.

The final notification appeared, and Jack’s entire consciousness locked onto it with absolute clarity.

[Sovereign-Class Creatures: Now Claimable as Bound Servants]

Jack’s breathing deepened noticeably at that notification. The restriction that had prevented him from claiming creatures of the Sovereign rank had been completely removed.

That meant Ren, the forgotten hero. The man who magic had no affect on. The very same man who promised to hunt down any royal bloodlines and kill them without discrimination.

The implications of that capability settled across Jack’s consciousness with the weight of absolute possibility. Ren had willingly chosen to be bound for revenge, and as long as he was satisfied with what he wanted, he would serve Jack for eternity.

That meant any Sovereign-class creature that Jack encountered in future engagements could be brought under his absolute dominion.

The excitement that flooded through Jack’s consciousness was not expressed as a shout or a visible gesture.

Instead, it manifested as a sharp intensification in the crackle of his black lightning, a barely perceptible increase in the pressure radiating from his frame.

The Thunder Mantle around his body burned noticeably brighter, responding to the surge of anticipation that Jack was experiencing.

The idea of claiming Ren while the creature was still alive and aware, still capable of understanding the transformation that was occurring, that carried implications that Jack had not previously been able to fully explore.

It represented a fundamental shift in the nature of Jack’s relationship with creatures and how he could extract information. Because when you bound an alive soul, they retained all their memories.

Jack used [Dark Flash] to transport himself back to his original position, where the draconic convergence filled the sky above him. Then he deactivated [Gloom Shroud].

The light-devouring mist that had surrounded his position for the past five minutes began to dissipate, revealing Jack’s standing form to any dragon that cared to look in his direction. But Jack was not concerned with being observed.

It took only seconds for the first of his lieutenants to process the information that had been transmitted to her senses.

Malicia’s voice erupted across the secure command frequency with a tone of absolute confusion and panic.

“Herald, he’s not dead. The human is standing in front of us. The Subterranean Vanguard isn’t eating any human.”

The silence that followed that statement was profound. It stretched across the borderlands like a miasma, creeping into every rock and crevice in the valley.

The Herald’s consciousness was processing the implications of Malicia’s recent report.

He was attempting to construct a framework where the statement made sense, where his strategic brilliance had not just been completely negated by a creature who had outwitted him at every turn.

But the facts were undeniable. Jack Kaiser was standing before him.

Before the Herald could process the implications of that statement or formulate a response, another voice cut across the command with a tone that carried something fundamentally different from panic.

Saphira’s voice resonated with profound relief, with the kind of gratitude that came from watching a desperate situation suddenly transform into something survivable.

“Reinforcements have arrived. Look to the northern region. Dragons are flooding into formation. Hundreds of them. The numbers have shifted. We have support!”

Saphira’s blue scales, which had gone completely pale moments before, began to return to their normal coloration as she tracked the arrival of the 713 dragons integrating into the aerial formations.

The color returned first to the outer edges of her scales, a gradual spreading of blue that signaled the retreat of panic.

Her entire frame seemed to decompress from the state of absolute tension it had been maintaining. Her breathing steadied. Her muscles unclenched. Her shoulders dropped as the crushing weight that had characterized her posture lifted completely.

The relief that flooded the command platform was palpable, registering as a physical force.

The lieutenants who had been frozen in states of panic suddenly found themselves with something tangible to hold onto.

The arrival of reinforcements introduced supplementary forces. This influx of reinforcements effectively mitigated the numerical disadvantage, thereby shifting the balance in favor of the draconic convergence.

Skatha’s involuntary earth magic, which had been destabilizing the stone beneath them, suddenly stabilized as her panic receded, replaced by something that resembled hope.

Boreas straightened his posture, his muscles no longer locked in tension but repositioned with purpose.

The Herald’s golden eyes widened slightly as he processed Saphira’s report.

His claws, which had been digging into the stone of the command platform with crushing force, relaxed marginally as he released the death grip he had maintained.

His breathing, which had been sharp and controlled bursts of desperation, began to steady as certainty crystallized in his consciousness.

The human had not escaped. He was standing in the dead zone. And now reinforcements had arrived to bolster the draconic convergence’s depleted formations. The Herald had been prepared to accept defeat.

He had been standing on the precipice of understanding that his ambition had crumbled into dust. His entire tactical framework had been invalidated. His strategic superiority had been revealed as an illusion.

But Saphira’s report offered something that the Herald had not expected to have again in this engagement: hope.

——–

“Look at them, S. Hope is a magnificent, fragile thing. When weak creatures believe in something that can be broken, their hope is nothing more than a delusion. A temporary reprieve before the slaughter. But when we hold intent, it ceases to be hope and becomes an absolute law of the world. If only Rhys were here, I could show him something great and teach him how easily the things they pray to can crack beneath my heel.” Jack said with a faint smirk.
