I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 725: Battle to reclaim the Kingdom

The ancient elf was still rigid, his veins still bulging at his temples, his composure completely shattered in ways that Sariel clearly didn’t realize were visible.

The ancient elf’s consciousness seemed to be fragmenting under the weight of something that transcended shock.

‘He knows something,’ Maelor observed, his perception sharpening as he studied Sariel’s physical manifestations. ‘He recognizes her. He knew her before she died. Before she was resurrected by…’

The realization struck Maelor with the force of a sharpened blade falling through silk.

‘…By Jack Kaiser. By the Soul Warden himself.’

Sariel’s jaw was clenched so violently that his ancient face seemed to reshape itself. His eyes flickered across the scrying mirrors with the intensity of someone attempting to process information that transcended his entire centuries-long understanding of strategic reality.

And there was something else in his expression. Something darker than shock. Something that suggested Sariel was calculating, processing, and attempting to determine how to respond to a situation that had spiraled completely beyond his control.

‘What is he thinking?’ Maelor wondered, his ancient mind attempting to anticipate the ancient strategist’s next move. ‘Is he considering how to oppose Jack Kaiser? Is he calculating the logistics of assassination? Or is he doing what he has always done… is he attempting to identify opportunity within catastrophe?’

The answer, Maelor realized with grim certainty, was almost certainly the latter.

Sariel was a creature of calculation. He didn’t respond to crises with panic or resistance. He responded by identifying leverage points, by locating opportunities, and by attempting to maneuver into positions where chaos could be exploited for advantage.

And that meant Sariel was already planning something.

Maelor’s hand gripped the throne’s armrest again, and this time the pressure was purposeful rather than unconscious.

His ancient mind was shifting from passive observation into active strategic engagement.

‘I need to act before Sariel does. I need to regain control before he can manipulate the situation further. I need to reclaim authority over my own kingdom.’

The wartime decree that he had signed hung over him like a specter. He had, through the manipulation of his council, authorized the exile of one of the most powerful entities on this continent.

He had forced the Soul Warden into isolation and combat. He had, in essence, created a weapon and then fired it at his own feet. But what made this weapon worse was that he just fed the Soul Warden an Army of Dragons.

‘But Jack Kaiser is still alive. And Jack Kaiser is the only force in this kingdom that possesses the power to challenge the political rot that has consumed the council.’

Maelor’s consciousness crystallized around a singular strategic objective that transcended immediate military considerations.

He needed to use Jack Kaiser to reclaim his kingdom.

He needed the Soul Warden’s power, the Soul Warden’s capabilities, the Soul Warden’s absolute refusal to bow to conventional authority.

He needed to leverage that power against the entrenched nobility that had convinced him to sign away one of the most valuable assets of the kingdom.

But first, he needed leverage over the Soul Warden himself.

——

Saphira’s consciousness had been fracturing piece by piece as she watched the impossible unfold.

The minotaurs that had been incinerated simply rematerialized. The woman with liquid-copper hair and minimal clothing had descended from the sky. She reduced an entire web of ensnared dragons to ash with a single, devastating display of fire magic that transcended conventional understanding.

But it was the recognition that finally shattered her completely.

The resurrection of creatures that should have remained dead. The jamming that made Jack impossible to track, aside from eyesight.

The pattern crystallized in her consciousness with horrifying certainty.

‘It can’t be,’ she thought, her ancient mind rejecting the conclusion even as every piece of evidence pointed toward an undeniable truth. ‘The Soul Warden is a myth. A legend. A creature that faded into history centuries ago. He doesn’t exist. He couldn’t possibly exist. This has to be some kind of trick!’

But the evidence was detonating across her consciousness with relentless force.

Everything about this engagement suggested something far older than an eighteen-year-old human.

Something that had learned to operate within human constraints while possessing capabilities that transcended them entirely. Something that had walked the world before and fundamentally altered the balance of magical power through sheer force of will.

The Soul Warden had returned.

Saphira’s entire frame convulsed.

Her silver scales, which had been flaring with the intensity of command just moments before, suddenly dimmed as her consciousness shifted from tactical engagement into survival mode.

Her golden eyes locked onto the remaining formations, calculating with brutal precision the exact number of dragons still capable of coordinated action. Approximately 3,600 creatures.

They were scarred, bleeding, and traumatized. But still capable.

Enough for one final, desperate gambit.

Her command cut across with absolute clarity, the tone of a lieutenant who had just recognized the only path forward that didn’t end in complete annihilation.

“All units! Retreat to maximum altitude! Establish a coordinated formation! Prepare for unified elemental assault! NOW!!!”

The response was immediate but chaotic.

Dragons that had been engaged in close-quarters combat with the minotaurs suddenly disengaged.

Some of them broke away cleanly. Others were forced to abandon their positions mid-strike as the minotaurs’ weapons descended toward their vitals.

A few dragons attempted to fight through, their consciousness locked onto the objective of protecting their honor, but the weight of Saphira’s command overrode their individual resistance.

They banked hard, their wings spreading to maximum extension as they began to accelerate upward.

Disaster-class creatures that Panthers had surrounded suddenly found reserves of speed they didn’t know they possessed, their desperation triggering physiological responses that normally wouldn’t activate except in circumstances of absolute life-or-death crisis.

The formations that had been scattered and disorganized began to coalesce, dragons positioning themselves relative to each other with the practiced precision of creatures who had trained for this exact scenario.

Higher and higher. The dragons ascended through the cloud layers.

The wind pressure intensified as they climbed. The air became thinner, less dense, forcing the dragons to flap harder to maintain altitude.

Their breath came in sharp, controlled gasps. Their muscles burned from the exertion of rapid altitude gain. But they continued upward, driven by the singular understanding that elevation was their only remaining tactical advantage.

For the first time since the assault had begun, separation manifested between predator and prey.

The minotaurs attempted to follow, their massive forms launching into the air with surprising power. But their limitations became apparent almost immediately.

They were unable to achieve flight. Sustaining altitude proved unfeasible. Consequently, they could not access organisms ascending into the upper atmosphere.

A few of them achieved brief flights before gravity reasserted itself, pulling them back down to the ground where they reformed and prepared for the next assault.

Saphira continued to transmit commands, her voice carrying the weight of a lieutenant who understood the critical nature of what was unfolding.

“All remaining units, channel your elemental affinities.”

The formations began to shift into geometric patterns.

Dragons positioned themselves with mathematical precision.

Fire dragons moved toward the center of the formation, their bodies beginning to glow with increasing intensity as they accumulated thermal energy.

Earth dragons anchored themselves at cardinal points, their consciousness focused on compressing their elemental power into singular, devastating force points.

Water dragons created defensive shells around the primary assault structure, their power manifesting as visible moisture that began to crystallize in the upper atmosphere.

Wind dragons established acceleration vectors throughout the formation, their consciousness locked onto creating the optimal airflow patterns that would channel the unified elemental attack with maximum efficiency.

Light dragons began to weave their energies into intricate patterns, creating visible distortions in the air itself.

Dark dragons moved into positions that complemented the light energy, their power creating voids that seemed to consume light rather than generate it.

The power that was accumulating was staggering in its magnitude.
