I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 733: Return from the Dungeon Part I

The scrying mirrors flickered as Sylvia Asher moved through the seventh boss chamber with the precision of a master surgeon.

Her movements were economical.

Perfect.

A single gesture of her hand redirected an incoming swipe from a creature with scales the size of shields. Another gesture, and three subordinate creatures ceased to exist, their forms dissolving into motes of arcane energy that were absorbed back into the dungeon’s ley-lines.

A merchant lord from the eastern territories was leaning forward in his observation seat, his expensive wine forgotten in his hand.

“By the gods,” he breathed, his voice carrying genuine awe. “Have you ever seen anything move that elegantly? She’s making terror rank creatures look like practice dummies.”

His companion, a wealthy trader whose family had made their fortune in arms dealing, nodded slowly.

“That’s not just power,” the trader said quietly. “That’s experience. That’s someone who’s fought at a level most students will never reach. Asher’s daughter is going to define what an apex predator actually looks like in this generation.”

Nearby, Duke Asher stood; he’d been expecting this result all along.

His expression carried the weight of a satisfied father. A father watching his daughter exceed expectations wasn’t unusual.

But a father watching his daughter exceed his expectations at a level that made every other student in the academy look pedestrian.

The scrying feed shifted.

One of the younger nobles gasped as the image transitioned from Sylvia’s perfect combat to a completely different scene.

The Emerald dungeon chamber showed Rhys standing motionless in the center of a vast stone plaza.

His team was arranged around him in a loose formation. Anya was sitting down, her legs crossed, her breathing deep and measured. Lucan was reading something, his expression entirely focused on the text. Bastian was meditating, his ambient heat reduced to baseline levels.

And Drakka Gor-Voidgaze was lying on her back, staring up at the carved ceiling, completely still.

A burst of laughter erupted from one of the observation sections.

“Is he serious?” a younger noble called out, his voice carrying the particular cruelty of someone watching someone else fail spectacularly. “The Rank 3 is literally doing nothing. He’s sitting around like he’s on a vacation while the other teams are fighting for their lives.”

The laughter spread like a contagion through the observation balconies.

More voices joined in, each one contributing commentary that ranged from mockery to outright contempt. A Rank 3 student, one of the highest-ranked individuals in the academy, was apparently squandering his dungeon trial by setting up camp like a common adventurer.

“Look at him,” another voice called out. “Completely motionless. That’s either arrogance or complete incompetence. I’m leaning toward incompetence.”

“His ranking was three,” someone else added, their tone dripping with satisfaction at witnessing failure at that scale. “By the end of this trial, he’ll be ranked in the mid-thirties if he’s fortunate. Wasting an entire dungeon instance is going to cost him everything.”

In the corner of the observation chamber, away from the main crowds of nobility and political climbers, two figures in pristine white robes stood motionless.

One of them turned toward a nearby serving station and retrieved a crystalline goblet of wine. She didn’t sip it. She drank it entirely, the liquid disappearing in three long swallows.

Then she retrieved another goblet and held it without drinking, her eyes tracking the scrying mirrors with the intensity of someone watching a game whose rules everyone else had yet to understand.

Chiron Stormblood, standing near enough to notice the gesture, felt a slight smile cross his features.

He knew exactly what she was seeing.

——–

30 minutes after the dungeon started.

The Amber Bay gateway groaned open with the sound of stone grinding against stone.

Aelion Starling stumbled through first, his elegant armor hanging in shattered pieces from his body. Half of his left side was missing the protective plating entirely, revealing deep lacerations that had bled so profusely his entire tunic was soaked crimson.

His face was covered in soot and ash, his perfect, noble features transformed into something unrecognizable by exhaustion and trauma.

The moment his feet touched the Concourse floor, his body convulsed, and he vomited violently onto the pristine white stone. His hands shook so severely that he nearly collapsed before catching himself on the gateway’s stone frame.

Brandon Horn was dragging Kelwin Alyon, barely conscious, their body limp, their breathing shallow and irregular.

Cyrus Ouroboros was limping heavily, one of his legs moving at an angle that the bone was broken in multiple places.

Faolan Starling was bleeding from a deep gash across his forehead, the wound still actively weeping blood down his face and neck.

A healer immediately rushed forward, her magical aura flaring to life as she began assessing injuries.

The observation chamber erupted into immediate commentary.

“They barely made it out,” someone breathed, their voice carrying a strange mixture of horror and fascination. “Look at that level of trauma. They were annihilated.”

“The boss,” another voice added, with the tone of someone stating an obvious fact. “That’s what happens when you encounter something that doesn’t care about your bloodline or your rank. That’s what happens when individual power meets something that transcends individual power.”

One of the Council members, his expression carefully neutral, turned toward the others in his section with the measured tone of someone making a political calculation.

“Aelion’s rank was fifteen,” he observed flatly. “By trial’s end, assuming he survives his injuries without permanent magical scarring, his rank will drop significantly. Environmental damage penalties combined with the clear failure to achieve basic survival metrics will obliterate any points his team might have accumulated.”

Another Council member leaned forward slightly.

“Amber’s dysfunction was evident even in the preparation bay,” this member said quietly. “Aelion’s assignment as captain created resentment rather than acceptance. The trial clearly exposed that fundamental weakness.”

Aelion was still vomiting, his entire body trembling with shock and exhaustion, and the recognition that he had almost died in that dungeon.

His noble bearing, his careful posture, his dignified demeanor, all of it had been stripped away by the dungeon’s lethal pressure.

The white-robed woman finished her second goblet of wine and immediately retrieved a third without any sign of intoxication affecting her movements or perception.

——-

37 minutes after the dungeon started.

The Alabaster gateway opened with significantly less violence, though the damage was evident in different ways.

Miriame Malakor stepped through first, her movements precise despite the visible exhaustion etched into every line of her body.

She had clearly maintained tactical focus throughout, her positioning still carrying the weight of someone operating at high cognitive function.

Cedric Castian followed, his shield so dented it was barely recognizable as protective equipment. The careful metalwork had been warped beyond any immediate repair.

Thorgar Zor-Grimmarch was using his warhammer as a cane, leaning heavily on it with each step, his stoic Orc features covered in dark monster ichor that had dried to an almost blackish hue.

His breathing was slow and measured, suggesting he was fighting through severe pain with disciplined acceptance.

Selene Sideris was clutching her broken arm against her chest, her eyes glassy with the kind of pain that came from injuries that required immediate magical intervention.

They didn’t collapse, vomit, or lose consciousness. But they moved like creatures that had survived something catastrophic through sheer force of will and tactical competence.

Family vacation. I will still post chapters. TOD uncertain.
