I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 734: Return from the Dungeon Part II

“At least they maintained some dignity,” a noble observed, relieved that not all teams had deteriorated into chaos. “That’s what separates competent teams from the ones that break completely under pressure.”

“Alabaster was ranked in the middle tiers,” another voice added, with the measured tone of someone making an institutional assessment. “Miriame’s team performed within expected parameters. They survived the encounter with dread rank threats. They didn’t dominate, but they survived with enough coherence to walk out under their own power.”

A third observer, someone with the bearing of an experienced dungeon delver, leaned back in their seat.

“The real question is how many bosses they actually eliminated versus how many they simply avoided,” this observer said thoughtfully. “Survival doesn’t always indicate success. Sometimes it indicates strategic withdrawal.”

The laughter had died down slightly. The observation chamber had shifted into something more analytical, more serious. What had started as a mockery of Amber’s catastrophic failure was evolving into a genuine assessment of the team’s capability and strategic choices.

Headmaster Aldwyn observed Alabaster’s exit in his characteristic silence, but internally, he was processing the information with the precision of a master strategist.

Alabaster had met its expected performance metrics. Miriame had maintained tactical focus and achieved a balanced survival outcome.

The white-robed woman drank her third goblet without pausing, her eyes never leaving the gateways.

——-

42 minutes after the dungeon started.

The Crimson gateway erupted open with a sound like a dying animal.

Byron Vantris stumbled through, his family mithril sword chipped and scarred, the beautiful weapon that had been passed down through generations now bearing permanent marks of catastrophic failure.

His mana was completely depleted. A shimmering void where magical power should have existed. His eyes carried the particular quality of someone who had just survived a war they hadn’t been prepared for.

He was supporting Julian Horn, who was semi-conscious, his body battered and broken, his breathing shallow and irregular.

Garrosh’s massive war club was snapped in half, the blackened steel fractured cleanly as if it had encountered something harder than its own composition.

The Orc warrior himself was bleeding from deep lacerations across his chest and arms, the wounds deep enough to require immediate magical attention.

His breathing was labored, his massive frame clearly experiencing profound strain.

Valerius emerged last, his pristine robes shredded into ribbons, the elegant fabric destroyed.

His mana was completely bottomed out, his arrogant posture entirely collapsed into something resembling shock.

His eyes were wide and unfocused; he was experiencing some form of psychological trauma that transcended simple physical exhaustion.

Kallor was missing.

The observation chamber fell completely silent for a moment that stretched across several heartbeats.

Then someone spoke, their voice carrying the weight of understanding something terrible.

“Where’s Kallor?”

No one answered immediately. The silence stretched, becoming heavier. The realization was beginning to crystallize in the observers’ minds.

“He’s not exiting,” a Council member said quietly, stating the fact with clinical precision. “The Rank #6 student has not emerged from the Crimson gateway.”

Valerius collapsed to his knees the moment he crossed the threshold, his entire body shaking with the magnitude of what he’d experienced.

The display of weakness from someone who had built his identity on absolute arrogance was jarring in its intensity.

Byron was staring at the gateway, as if it might suddenly disgorge another student, as if Kallor might still emerge, as if the dungeon might give him back what it had taken.

“The apex predators,” a noble breathed, their voice carrying something between mockery and genuine horror. “They barely survived. And they lost someone in the process.”

“Kallor is gone,” another voice added flatly, the words carrying finality. “That’s a casualty. That’s a student death. That’s going to have massive institutional consequences.”

A third observer, someone with direct Council connections, turned toward their companions.

“This trial was meant to test capability, not determine survival,” this observer said carefully. “But when students die in academy-sanctioned trials, there are political repercussions. Families demand answers. The Academy will face questions about safety protocols.”

In the balconies, the white-robed woman set down her wine goblet and spoke for the first time since the trial had begun.

Her voice was quiet. Absolutely certain in a way that she had already processed and understood the full implications of what was occurring.

“The dungeon is not in the business of forgiving failures,” she said, looking directly at her companion. “They will suffer massive penalties, and everyone here is probably too stupid to realize a teacher rescued him.”

Her companion nodded slowly, understanding the implications without needing further explanation.

The observation chamber was processing the reality of what had just happened. The Rank #1 team, the composition of apex predators, the collection of students who should have dominated the academy, had instead barely survived and lost one of their members in the process.

Headmaster Aldwyn’s internal monologue shifted with the clarity of a master tactician recalibrating strategy.

The Crimson team would be ranked significantly lower. The internal dysfunction evident in the preparation bay had translated directly into catastrophic failure and the loss of personnel.

One of the merchants was already calculating what this meant for his family’s political alliances.

“If Aelion’s team failed and Crimson’s team failed catastrophically, then the apex predator composition doesn’t guarantee success,” he was saying quietly to his associates. “That changes the calculation of what constitutes elite capability and who has worth.”

The white-robed woman retrieved another goblet of wine.

——–

51 minutes after the dungeon trial started.

The Violet gateway groaned open, and immediate chaos spilled into the Concourse with the raw intensity of a storm breaking against a shoreline.

Lysandra Malakor and Lyra Veyra were actively screaming at each other the moment they crossed the threshold, entirely unconcerned that the entire Council and observation galleries were watching them with the intensity of observers witnessing a social catastrophe.

“Your incompetence cost us positioning!” Lysandra shrieked, her voice carrying the particular quality of someone beyond caring about social niceties or Council observation.

“If you’d maintained the earth barriers instead of collapsing them like a novice mage, we wouldn’t have been driven back into the second chamber!”

“YOUR strategy was flawed from the beginning!” Lyra shrieked back, her elegant elven features twisted with rage and exhaustion. “You can’t simply command creatures to hold formation when the battlefield itself is being restructured by numerous dread rank entities! Your arrogance killed any chance we had at tactical positioning!”

Vira Gor-Voidgaze’s knuckles were raw and bleeding, the skin split open in multiple places from where she’d been punching through armored carapaces.

Her massive Orc frame was covered in bruises and cuts, her breathing heavy and labored. She was completely ignoring the argument between the two elves; her focus turned entirely inward, as if she were processing something far deeper than simple combat exhaustion.

Markus Mistfang was limping so severely that he could barely walk; his mana was completely exhausted and burned out.

The magical resources that had been stored in his personal bag were also gone, depleted entirely by extensive use in combat.

Lysandra and Lyra were still arguing, their voices echoing through the Concourse with the particular quality of elves who had abandoned any pretense at social civility. Neither one was willing to acknowledge that the dungeon’s challenges had outmatched their team.

The white-robed woman drank again, her expression never changing, her eyes never leaving the gateways.

Family vacation. I will still post chapters. TOD uncertain.
