I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 735: Return from the Dungeon Part III

57 minutes from the dungeon started.

The Sapphire gateway opened, and everyone watched to see what happened.

Sylvia Asher stepped through first. Her hair was not out of place. Every strand remained perfectly arranged, demonstrating either a complete absence of struggle or meticulous attention to appearance even under lethal pressure.

Her robes were pristine.

There was not a single tear, a single stain, nor a single indication that she was in a fight. Her breathing was controlled; she had just completed a light training exercise rather than a lethal dungeon crawl.

Clara Veyra followed, her shield bearing only minor scuffs that appeared almost decorative.

Her breathing was deep and even, her body moving with the relaxed grace of someone experiencing minimal physical strain.

Soren Anake executed a flawless transition, disengaging his support enchantments with precision.

Kaelen Ashwood’s appearance conveyed assured confidence, indicative of a task completed with exemplary proficiency and without significant challenges.

Thalia Meridan traversed the portal with the refined elegance of a seasoned performer, standing on the balls of her feet.

The observation chamber fell into awed silence.

Duke Asher’s demeanor conveyed satisfaction, yet his composure remained steadfast.

This was the result he had expected. This was his daughter, exceeding every conceivable standard.

Immediately, congratulations began flowing through the observation sections with the intensity of a coordinated response.

“That’s what perfection looks like,” a merchant lord breathed, his voice carrying genuine admiration. “Asher’s daughter dominated.”

Nobles who had been mocking Emerald minutes earlier were now expressing reverence for Sylvia’s performance.

One of the Council members turned toward Duke Asher as he delivered a compliment that carried layers of political weight beneath the surface politeness.

“Your daughter’s performance was immaculate. Her lineage demonstrates a level of power that most families rarely attain within a single generation,” the Council member said carefully, his tone carrying the weight of formal recognition. “Asher’s legacy continues to define excellence in the academy’s legacy.”

Asher acknowledged the comment with a subtle inclination of his head, the movement carrying the weight of someone who had expected nothing less than absolute dominance from his child.

Headmaster Aldwyn observed Sylvia’s exit in silence, but internally, his understanding of the trial’s implications was crystallizing into absolute certainty.

Sylvia Asher had cleared the dungeon with flawless precision and had maintained her team’s cohesion throughout. She had achieved everything the trial was designed to test.

The implications were staggering.

The white-robed woman was on her fourth goblet of wine. She drank deeply, her eyes tracking Sylvia’s perfect posture as the young woman stood at the center of the Concourse, accepting congratulations with the composed grace of someone who had never doubted her own capability.

Her companion leaned slightly closer, their voice barely audible even to someone standing adjacent to them.

“She’s exceptional,” the companion whispered. “But that’s not what matters about this trial. That’s not what’s actually important here.”

The white-robed woman drank more wine and said nothing.

——–

60 minutes after the dungeon started.

The Emerald gateway began to glow at exactly sixty minutes.

At the absolute final second of the countdown, Emerald strolled through the threshold like they were exiting from a casual afternoon at a marketplace rather than a lethal dungeon trial.

Rhys emerged first, his movements completely unbothered; his posture showed he had not experienced a single moment of actual strain.

His robes were completely intact. His hair was perfectly arranged. His breathing was entirely normalized.

Drakka Gor-Voidgaze was walking half a step behind him, her massive Orc frame moving with a kind of quiet deference that something fundamental had shifted in her understanding of hierarchy and capability.

Anya Castian stepped through with relaxed shoulders, her breathing deep and even, her eyes clear and focused, demonstrating absolutely no trace of the anxiety that had characterized her throughout the preparation period.

Lucan Kale was casually tossing a minor mana potion in his hand due to a lack of thrill.

This was boredom, as if he were waiting for a delayed carriage to arrive rather than having just survived a lethal dungeon.

Bastian Fireheart emerged last, his ambient heat completely normalized, his expression carrying the serene calm of someone who had found absolute center and maintained it throughout impossible pressure.

The observation chamber fell into absolute silence.

The prevailing silence was not one of reverence, as Sapphire had commanded, nor of dread, as Amber had incited. Instead, it was a silence born of bewilderment, as observers endeavored to comprehend the unfolding events.

Emerald remained entirely unscathed.

There was no evidence of physical damage, no discernible wear on their attire, no indication of exertion, and no suggestion that they had engaged in any form of genuine conflict.

Then, suddenly, laughter enveloped the Concourse.

It started small. A single burst of mockery from someone who had watched the scrying feed show Emerald sitting around doing nothing for the entire trial.

The laughter of someone who was certain they understood what had transpired.

Then more laughter joined in.

“He sat down,” someone called out, their voice dripping with contempt. “The Rank 3 sat down and waited for the clock to run out. That’s what his ‘strategy’ was. That’s what passes for competence at the highest levels of the academy.”

The laughter intensified, building with the momentum of collective mockery.

“His rank will plummet,” another voice added, and the laughter cascaded through the observation sections like a wildfire. “He was already ranked third. By the end of the trial, he might be ranked below the mid-tier students. He wasted the entire dungeon instance. He had twenty-four hours and he spent it sitting down!”

More voices joined in, each one contributing their own contempt for what appeared to be an absolutely catastrophic failure on Rhys’s part.

The arrogance of sitting down while other teams were fighting for their lives was incomprehensible.

“Look at his team,” another observer called out. “They’re not even breathing hard. They didn’t even try to fight! That’s a waste of academy resources.”

The mockery cascaded through the observation sections, intensifying.

Rhys stood at the center of the Concourse, completely unbothered by the laughter, his expression carrying the particular quality of someone who had already understood that this reaction was inevitable.

He exhibited no defensiveness or anger. He remained entirely composed as the observation chamber erupted in contempt.

Drakka stood beside him, her head slightly bowed, her imposing figure perfectly still, her entire demeanor conveying an acceptance of something that the other occupants of the observation chamber had not yet comprehended.

Her head came up slightly as the laughter continued, and in her expression was absolute certainty mixed with pity for the observers who didn’t understand.

The white-robed woman finished her fourth goblet of wine and immediately set down the empty glass with a loud thud.

She did not move to retrieve another one.

Instead, she stood, her eyes tracking the observation chamber as the laughter continued to cascade, as nobles expressed their certainty that Rhys had completely wasted the trial, as observers congratulated themselves on their understanding of what had transpired.

She was perfectly, absolutely, stone-cold sober.

Her companion was watching the same thing, understanding the same thing, recognizing what the white-robed woman had recognized the moment Emerald emerged completely unharmed.

Chiron Stormblood, standing at the edge of the observation chamber, felt a slight smile cross his features.

The betting line on Emerald had just become extremely profitable.

Family vacation. I will still post chapters. TOD uncertain.
