I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 713: Dragon’s Rebuttal

Jack Kaiser stood motionless in the dead zone. The black lightning that surrounded his frame crackled with patient intensity, waiting for the moment when the Herald would finally understand the true scope of what he was facing.

The Mask of the Soul Warden resonated against Jack’s face. The ability that Jack had unlocked, [Phobia], allowed him to perceive the Herald’s deepest terror. The dragon’s paramount, crippling fear was spelled out in a single, definitive word: [Power].

It was pathetic. The grand commander of the draconic empire, a creature who actively coveted dominion and hungered to usurp the Dragon King himself, was fundamentally terrified of anything stronger than him.

He didn’t revere absolute strength; he feared it. He craved the throne while shivering at the weight of a crown.

Jack’s voice cut across the borderlands with absolute clarity, spoken aloud with the kind of confidence that came from a creature who had already calculated every variable of the engagement that was about to unfold.

“Herald. I’m offering you a choice. You and me. One on one. No armies. Just two creatures in a space where only one of us walks away.”

The silence that followed that statement lasted for precisely three seconds before the draconic convergence erupted into laughter.

The Herald’s booming laugh echoed across the stone command platform, a sound so loud it made the ground beneath them vibrate.

His entire massive frame convulsed with the force of that laughter, his scales flaring with radiance that burned bright enough to cast shadows across the entire barren borderlands.

His lieutenants joined in, their manic amusement broadcasting across the secure channel to every dragon in the formations.

The idea that a single human would suggest fighting the Herald one-on-one was so absurd that it triggered a cascade of laughter that rippled through the entire draconic army.

Even the 3,185 remaining dragons of the primary formations, scattered and disorganized though they were, began to mock the human’s suggestion.

The Herald was an emperor-class dragon, a creature whose power transcended anything that a human could possibly possess.

The very concept of the human believing he had any chance against the Herald was something that triggered derision from every corner of the battlefield.

Jack waited for the laughter to subside.

His expression remained absolutely calm. His black lightning continued to crackle around his frame with undiminished intensity.

He was not offended by their mockery; he had anticipated it.

He had calculated the exact moment when pride would override caution, when the Herald’s draconic arrogance would make him susceptible to the baiting that Jack was about to deploy.

When the laughter finally began to recede, Jack spoke again.

“Fine. It’s three to one odds. You have your remaining dragons. I have my army. Three to one is manageable. Your chances of winning are about one percent.”

The laughter returned, but this time it was tinged with confusion. The Herald’s golden eyes narrowed as he processed what Jack had just said.

His claws, which had been extended in a gesture of casual amusement, suddenly dug deeper into the stone.

The Herald had roughly 3,898 dragons remaining. The human had… what? A few hundred creatures at most? The mathematics of what the human was claiming made absolutely no sense.

Malicia’s voice cut across the borderlands; she was struggling not to laugh at what she was hearing.

“Did the human just claim that he’s outnumbered three to one? Does he not understand basic mathematics? We have thousands of dragons. He has only himself. The disparity is incomprehensible.”

The Herald’s response was a continued booming laugh, a sound that carried the weight of absolute certainty. The human had miscalculated so badly, had misunderstood the basic numbers of the engagement so thoroughly, that it had moved from pathetic into something almost endearing in its desperation.

But beneath that laughter, something else was beginning to crystallize in the Herald’s consciousness. A feeling that the human was not speaking out of ignorance, but out of something else entirely.

Something that suggested the human understood the engagement in a way that transcended conventional military calculation.

Jack’s voice cut through the laughter once more, but this time it carried a different tone. This time it carried contempt, the kind of absolute disdain that could only come from someone who had already decided the outcome of an engagement before it had truly begun.

“You’re a little bitch, Herald. A creature who craves the throne, who hungers to challenge the Dragon King himself, who commands thousands of followers. And yet you’re terrified. You’re terrified of anything stronger than you. You fear power. You fear strength. You fear what you cannot dominate.”

The laughter stopped instantly. The silence that followed was so profound that it seemed to stop time.

The Herald’s entire body went rigid, every muscle locked in place. His claws dug into the stone of the command platform with force that cracked the bedrock beneath them, leaving gouges several feet deep.

His breathing, which had been the steady, confident rhythm of a predator who had just dismissed a trivial threat, suddenly came in sharp, controlled bursts.

The Herald’s golden eyes narrowed to slits as the full implication of what Jack had said began to cascade through his consciousness.

The human had understood something about the Herald that went beyond conventional assessment. He had identified the one vulnerability that the Herald had spent centuries trying to conceal. His fundamental terror of anything that might actually be stronger than himself.

Jack continued, his voice cutting across the sudden silence like a blade through silk, each word delivered made the Herald’s heart beat slightly faster.

“You’re so afraid of fighting something that might actually be stronger than you that you had to build an entire empire just to feel safe. Just to convince yourself that you could command enough force that no single entity could ever threaten your dominance. You surrounded yourself with thousands of dragons because you’re incapable of accepting a reality where you might not be the strongest creature in existence. You’re a coward hiding behind numbers because the alternative, facing true strength, is something your consciousness cannot process without fragmenting.”

Multiple voices erupted simultaneously, creating a cacophony of defensive outrage. Nexia’s voice was the first, sharp with indignation and the kind of anger that came from witnessing an insult to her commander.

“That’s enough, human. The Herald has demonstrated sufficient patience with your insolence. You will cease your vulgarity immediately or face the consequences of your disrespect.”

Saphira’s voice followed, carrying the weight of a lieutenant whose pride had been wounded on behalf of her commander, her blue scales flaring with rage that was visible even from a distance.

“The Herald has defeated countless adversaries across the span of centuries. He has conquered territories that other dragons could only dream of claiming. He has earned the respect of the entire draconic empire through military achievement that transcends your capacity to comprehend. You address a being whose power transcends your comprehension by orders of magnitude.”

Boreas, the fastest dragon in the vanguard, added his voice to the chorus of defense. He was on the precipice of launching himself directly at Jack despite the distance.

“You stand alone on a battlefield surrounded by thousands of our kind, and you dare to speak this way? The Herald could destroy you with a thought. Your arrogance is only matched by your stupidity. The fact that you still draw breath is evidence only of the Herald’s patience, not of your strength.”
