Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Going Out to Play

When the break was announced, everyone screamed with excitement like a barrel of monkeys. It was clear they had all been bottling it up for a long time.

On the way to the cafeteria, everyone chattered away, discussing what they would do on their day off.

Meanwhile, Lin Jingjing and her four companions trudged dejectedly toward the back kitchen.

Captain Li was already standing there, arms crossed, watching them. He raised an eyebrow as the group approached.

’In just a month, these kids have all gotten darker.’

Even Lin Jingjing’s skin had tanned to a wheat color, and her once-scrawny arms now had some muscle.

The only one who hadn’t tanned, surprisingly, was that pretty boy, Mo Xuan. Standing among them, he looked exceptionally pale.

’This kid really doesn’t tan, huh.’

”You get a day off tomorrow. Why the long faces?” Captain Li asked. His voice was rough and sounded particularly impatient.

The group looked at him, every one of them looking exhausted.

”We’re tired,” Lin Jingjing replied.

Captain Li took one look and saw just how worn out these kids were.

”Alright, I’ll give you a week’s break—from cooking. After your training’s done, you don’t have to come back here,” Captain Li said after rubbing his chin thoughtfully.

Hearing this, their eyes lit up.

”We really don’t have to cook anymore?” Shi Feng asked excitedly.

”Yep.”

At that, they cheered and threw their arms around each other, spinning in circles. ”We can finally get a proper rest!” they shouted.

”AHHH—”

Captain Li was a pretty good guy. Knowing they wanted to go out, he even gave them a thousand Star Coins.

He told them to go see the current state of B6 Star and grab a good meal while they were at it.

”Go get some food,” Captain Li said with a wave of his hand before walking away.

After eating, since they didn’t have to train that evening, the group took a stroll around the training grounds.

The grounds were bustling with people coming and going. They stuck to the corners, just walking.

Lin Jingjing and Mo Xuan walked ahead, chatting about what to do on the streets tomorrow.

”We’ll get a meal, buy some daily necessities. A few days ago, Feng He mentioned you guys are almost out of body wash and stuff.”

”We’re running low on a lot of things on our side, too.”

Lin Jingjing nodded. They definitely needed to restock.

Just yesterday, the two of them had added water to the body wash bottle to get the last bit out.

Behind them, Shi Feng and Feng He had started wrestling.

Feng He pinned Shi Feng to the ground and started smacking his butt. Shi Feng struggled to fight back, yelling, ”Get off me! I’m not fighting you!”

Gu Kaiwen stood to the side, gloating as he watched them.

He even clapped his hands while cheering, ”Fight! Fight! Fight!”

The two who had been wrestling stopped, glanced at each other, and Feng He stood up. Shi Feng scrambled up from the ground as well.

”Get him!” they said in unison.

Then they charged at Gu Kaiwen, tackling him together and immediately pouncing on him.

The two in front hadn’t continued walking. They stopped to wait for them, their conversation uninterrupted.

”Let me go,” Gu Kaiwen grunted, trying to get up from the ground, but Shi Feng held him down.

”That’s what you get for laughing at us,” Feng He said, sitting on him and hitting him.

People passing by stared at them as if they were looking at lunatics.

But they paid the stares no mind, still completely absorbed in their roughhousing.

”You two are such dorks!” Gu Kaiwen yelled.

”You’re the dork!” Shi Feng retorted.

Lin Jingjing mentally tallied a list and realized they needed to buy quite a lot of things.

”I’ve already prepared an itinerary for our day out tomorrow,” Mo Xuan said, opening his Star Ring. He pulled up an app and showed her the plans he had researched over the past few days.

”I read online that there’s a really fun place on B6 Star. Hong Fei Park has a lot of attractions, and the atmosphere and scenery are supposed to be amazing.”

”We can go there to have some fun and relax,” Mo Xuan said, pointing to Hong Fei Park on the screen.

Lin Jingjing looked it over carefully and nodded. ”Sounds good.”

Behind them, the other three were still wrestling, their noisy shouts filling the air.

It was so loud that even passersby were getting annoyed.

They had walked enough. After glancing at the time, Lin Jingjing called out to the trio behind her, ”Stop messing around! Let’s head back.”

Hearing Lin Jingjing’s voice, the three of them scrambled up from the ground. ”Got it.”

From all the wrestling, Feng He’s long hair, which had been tied up tightly, had come completely loose.

Seeing this, Lin Jingjing reached out to help fix it, then straightened out Feng He’s clothes for her.

They parted ways at the bottom of the dormitory building.

”See you tomorrow!”

The five went to sleep buzzing with excitement, and they woke up bright and early the next day.

After getting ready, they left with their bags packed. They had just met up downstairs when Captain Li showed up.

”You’re all up pretty early,” Captain Li remarked. He stood there with a cigarette dangling from his lips and his hands in his pockets, wearing a pair of slippers. He looked both lazy and sloppy.

”You have to get up early if you want to have fun,” Lin Jingjing said with a smile.

”Exactly,” Feng He chimed in.

Captain Li looked at the kids, then pulled out several pistols and handed them over.

”Some places outside are still pretty dangerous on B6 Star. It’s better if you have a weapon on you for self-defense.”

After handing them the guns, he took the cigarette from his mouth. ”Have fun.”

”Remember to come back early.”

”We know, Captain Li!” Shi Feng shouted, then rushed forward to give him a big hug.

”We’ll miss you.”

Captain Li just scoffed. ”Get lost, all of you. You’re annoying to look at.”

”Got it.”

After leaving the First Corps and boarding a hovercar, their hearts were already soaring.

Watching the scenery fly by backward through the hovercar window, Shi Feng said excitedly, ”I can’t wait to see what it’s like out there.”

They had been taken to the First Corps right after they’d transmigrated and hadn’t been outside since.

They were full of curiosity about the world outside.

In contrast, Gu Kaiwen and Mo Xuan weren’t nearly as excited, as they had spent some time outside before.

They knew how hard life was out there.

”Dire straits” was the only way to describe it.

Many ordinary citizens were living terrible lives, but with the mutant beasts not yet in retreat, neither the military nor the Star Government had the time to manage things properly.

They could only delay and delay, distributing some free Nutrient Liquid daily to those who couldn’t afford food, just enough to keep them from starving to death.

As for homeless children, they could only send them to orphanages one by one.

But for kids their age, who were legally adults but had lost their parents and had no Star Coins, they were simply left to fend for themselves.

If you wanted to live, you had to rely on your own two hands.

The hovercar stopped in the most prosperous city center on B6 Star. When they got out, their eyes were fixed on the towering skyscrapers before them.

The moment they stepped out of the car, their eyes widened.

This was nothing like what they had seen before.

Skyscrapers, bustling crowds, and smiling faces everywhere.

Hovercars zipped through the air, and robots could be seen on the ground from time to time.

”No way. This is completely different from where we were before,” Gu Kaiwen said, starting to question his reality.
